[PICTURES] Vaibhav Suryavanshi: The youngest cricketer ever to be chosen to play in the IPL

Most of our cricketers in Pakistan pursued cricket against the wishes of their family. I still think it's the case. There isn't a culture of fathers taking their kids for training and sports as their is in western countries. Kids play in the streets. You see lots of interviews of cricketers that i used to sneak out to play, or my parents didn't approve. It appears in India this culture of sports being acceptable has developed too, probably due to IPL.
Cricket has become a profession now. Gone are the days where parents were fixated on making their sons doctors, engineers. People earn money through various means. Real state, psychology, catering, fashion tech, viscom. ALong those lines cricket has become a profession at the advent of IPL. Ofcourse the competition is intense as you could lose all your money and your son still not a cricketer.

Its a clear case of age fudging.... and there will be more scrutinity on him now.

And indians dont need to get offended, they have trolled afridi and rashid khan for fake ages.

Still even if he was an 18 year old that scored that 100, great achievement, but he is a age fudger and i hope Rahul Dravid has something to say about him

History made in IPL as Shastri forecasts next challenge for Suryavanshi
India legend Ravi Shastri discussed the impressive teenager on the most recent episode of The ICC Review and looked at what may lie ahead for the 14-year-old.

History was made in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday when 14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed a sensational century for the Rajasthan Royals.

Suryavanshi became the youngest player to score a T20 century with his innings of 101 in an eight-wicket victory for the Royals against Gujarat Titans, with the left-hander eclipsing the previous record held by Maharashtra’s Vijay Zol, who had scored a hundred at the age of 18 years and 118 days.

The teenager smashed seven fours and 11 sixes during his 38-ball innings, with his century coming from just 35 deliveries and the second fastest in the history of the IPL, only behind Chris Gayle's 30-ball effort.

It was only Suryavanshi's third innings in the IPL, with the opener having impressed earlier in the tournament and catching Ravi Shastri’s eye when he hit his first ball for six and scored 34 against the Lucknow Super Giants.

Shastri spoke glowingly of the bevy of young openers on display in the IPL this year on the latest episode of The ICC Review and admitted he had been in awe of how Suryavanshi had commenced his cricketing career.

"I think the first shot he ever played (against Lucknow), that would have taken everyone's breath away," Shastri told host Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review.

"But he's young, just let him play. I would say just let him play a bit because it's at that age, there's bound to be failure as well.

"It's how he handles failure, as people will come up with new things."

Shastri believes bowlers will target Suryavanshi with some short-pitched deliveries in the future and the real test will come with how he responds.

"There'll be lots of short stuff thrown at him the next time he comes out to bat because when you tonk someone's first ball for six, then you show no mercy," he said.

"Then you don't care whether he's 14 years old or 12 years old or 20 years old.

"The menu is the same that you dish out. So, he'll have to get used to that and once we see him handling that then you can make a proper judgement."

"It was his (lucky) day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day," said Shubman Gill while speaking to the broadcaster after the game.

I find a tinge of bitterness in Gill's post match comments about Vaibhav.

Yeah thought the same, he was miser and mincing his words. Not a good look on him. He should have appreciated the teenager. Obviously he doesn't have shots to deal with all kind of balls and nobody expects that from him at this age.

Jadeja ,the match fixer have criticized gill for those comments. Gill seems to have taken granted of next superstar tag and got all bs in his head.Gill have that selfish statpadder mentality and he displayed it in full against zim series last year.

Whatever Jadeja says doesn't matter to me. However, Gill gotta get better as he'll lead us one day for sure.

He may lead us in one days . he is not preferred in t20s and test matches jaiswal may have a better chance as gill is too inconsistent in spicy pitches.

I would think in this day and age of social media it would be really hard to conceal age fudging - all it would need is a couple of former school classmates to speak up.

Bihar CM announces Rs 10 lakh for Vaibhav Suryavanshi after IPL 2025 century

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced a prize of Rs 1 lakh for Vaibhav Suryavanshi following his sensational century in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Jaipur. The Chief Minister took to social media to share photos from their meeting in 2024, extending his best wishes to the 14-year-old for his future in international cricket.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who hails from Samatsipur, Bihar, made history by becoming the youngest player to score a century in the history of Twenty20 cricket. The Rajasthan Royals opener played fearlessly, smashing 11 sixes to complete a 35-ball century, the fastest by an Indian in the IPL and the second-fastest overall, behind Chris Gayle's 30-ball ton. His remarkable batting display helped Rajasthan Royals chase down a 210-run target in just 15.5 overs, defeating Gujarat Titans in style.

At just 13 years old, Vaibhav was bought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 1.1 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. He made his first-class debut for Bihar in January 2024, at the tender age of 12 years and 284 days.

At worst 16 given a few images from the past from his very young age. But BCCI is very seriuos about age fudging if someone participates in age group matches. Careers have ended just for 2 month age fudging.

15 tops, that interview he did indeed reveal his real age. He will be 16 in September.

His photographs and videos are well documented from age 7 and nothing there seems dodgy. His only fault is growing taller than 90 percent of the Desi batsmen as a child.

I don’t think that is the case. Even if it is, it’s only a max of 1 or 2 yrs. This thread itself has pictures of him from a few years ago. He is a kid.
He may not be 14. Probably a 15 or 16 at worse.

Most of our cricketers in Pakistan pursued cricket against the wishes of their family. I still think it's the case. You see lots of interviews of cricketers that i used to sneak out to play, or my parents didn't approve. More also due to how Indian dads are living their dreams through their children, happening in US as well.

Not looking like a 14 to me... in an interview from 2 years ago, he said that he is gonna turn 14 this year,,, how can he be 14 after 2 years still???

Jaiswal is looking younger here...LOL

SWKq1YM.png
Lol he shaves his facial here. He is not 14. Mostly 16 or 17

The age of middle class sports stars is here.

The whole trauma filled poverty stricken childhood struggle narrative era when players emerged from dusty grounds and shared one bat among 12 friends is fading away.

The obese middle-class fathers in polo tshirts have taken over bro. They be doing throw down drills with their kids on the terraces & backyards at war-footing.

These upcoming middle class kids are no slumdog chhapris like Harbhajan or Ajay Ratra. They went on a desert safari in Dubai at 6, had a long-distance situationship with a girl in Bangkok at 12 and they confidently ordered “one six-inch teriyaki chicken with extra jalapenos and chipotle Southwest” before hitting puberty.

He admitted to being 14 years old in an interview in 2023, so he is 16 at the very least.

He admitted to being 13 1/2 years old in an interview in 2023, so he is 15 and a half at the very least.
Corrected. He passed the bone test too because the age difference is within the bounds of margin of error in his case.

I trust that interview to be his true age and for what he has achieved, it doesn't matter if he is 14 or 15, this is a prodigy of the highest level.

End of the day it doesn’t matter if he is 14, 15 or 16; a teen hitting a century from 35 balls peppered with 11 sixes off the likes of Rashid, Siraj, Prasidh Krishna is nothing short of sensational. You can be a sourpuss and look to pull him down, but his talent is undeniable. Hopefully he keeps his focus and doesn’t let the fame get to him.

You think he is 18?

WOW...went thru some of the comments on a few pages of this thread....conspiracy theories on steriods coming thru like greased lightning...
Everyone is super convinced he is an age fudger - maybe he is, maybe he is not- till such time proof is given, we have no choice but to accept what is in front....presented to us.

@NishanKonar - he practically has a recent 2000's XI list of age fudgers as he has named several recent players....dude - provide the proof else take your meds on time and crawl back into the woodwork where you belong.

What is to be admired about VS is irrespective of his age 14, 16 , 18, 25, 45 or whatever the truck, his batswing is awesome -like a young yuvi or BCL or sir gary, his eye hand co ordination is terrific....yeah - one innings dont a legend make...but at least appreciate him irrespective of what his age (come up with the proof else sod off) - appreciate that at a such young tender age- he performs in this manner, appreciate that some one/group of people/the system - somewhere, at some point in time - identified this diamond and polished it....that is what missing in the pages and comments above mine.

You think he is 18?
Anywhere between 16-18

Saying he is 14, basically means he hit puberty after the auction or is yet to hit puberty....

His age difference is similar to Naseem Shah.

Some people are older but age very slow

Vaibhav Suryavanshi age controversy explained: Why 14-year-old phenom's astounding efforts have raised eyebrows

The cricket world was set alight earlier this week after Indian prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi registered one of the fastest centuries in the history of the Indian Premier League.

Suryavanshi's 35-ball century against the Gujarat Titans was second only to Chris Gayle's 30-ball century while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013.

What made the century more special is the fact that Suryavanshi was just 14 years and 32 days of age at the time of his sparkling knock.

Suryavanshi smashed 11 sixes against an attack featuring Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna and Rashid Khan, all of whom have played international cricket.

Given Suryavanshi smashed the previous record of the IPL's youngest centurion, Manish Pandey, at 19 years and 253 days in 2009 by over five years, there have been questions raised around the legitimacy of his age.

Here is what we know.

What is Suryavanshi's listed age?

Suryavanshi's current birth date is listed as March 27, 2011.

That would mean he was born less than a week before India won the 2011 World Cup by beating Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai.

He is currently listed as being 14 years and 34 days of age at the time of writing.

Where does Suryavanshi's century rank in terms of age?

As previously mentioned, Suryavanshi is by far the youngest centurion in the history of the IPL, beating out Manish Pandey's record from 2009.

He also quite comfortably clears the youngest centurion in the history of Test cricket, that being Bangladesh's Mohammad Ashraful, who scored a ton against Sri Lanka at 17 years and 61 days of age in 2001.

Pakistani great Shahid Afridi is the youngest centurion in the history of one day cricket having famously scored a century against Sri Lanka at 16 years and 217 days of age in 1996.

Suryavanshi is the fourth-youngest centurion in domestic cricket. That record sits with Pakistan's Mohammad Akram, who scored 111 while playing for Khairpur in a first-class match in 1968 at just 12 years and 217 days of age.

Why is there controversy surrounding his age?
Any time something extraordinary happens on a sporting field, there are naturally sceptics around. In this case, seeing a 14-year-old blast seasoned international cricketers around the park is not normal.

There have been a number of previous instances in cricket where 'youngest ever' claims have been shrouded in controversy.

Pakistan's Hasan Raza made headlines when he made his Test debut at 14 years and 227 days in 1996. Raza was thought to be the youngest debutant in Test history, but the Pakistan Cricket Board later withdrew the claim for Raza's record after medical tests raised doubts about his actual birth date.

Suryavanshi sceptics have also pointed to an interview he did with BNN News Benipatti in 2023. The interview is posted on YouTube and the title of it suggests Suryavanshi was 14 years old at the time of the interview.

In the interview, he is asked how old he is and he tells the interviewer, "I'll turn 15 on September 27th". This is controversial on two counts. One, because it would mean he is not currently 14 years old, but is rather 16 going on 17, and two, because September 27th is not what his official birth date is currently listed as.

How is it possible to have two different birth dates?

Suryavanshi was born in Samastipur, a small district in Bihar, which is stationed in the far north-east corner of India near the country's border with Nepal.

Birth certificates in India are dealt according to The Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.

It is mandatory for every birth or stillbirth to be registered with the concerned state within 21 days of its occurrence. To apply for a birth certificate, the birth must first be registered by filling up a form prescribed by the registrar of the concerned local authority.

According to the Section 13 of the Act, it is possible to have a delayed registration of a birth.

Section 13.1 states, "Any birth or death of which information is given to the Registrar after the expiry of the period specified therefor, but within thirty days of its occurrence, shall be registered on payment of such late fee as may be prescribed".

Section 13.2 states, "Any birth or death of which delayed information is given to the Registrar after thirty days but within one year of its occurrence shall be registered only with the written permission of the prescribed authority and on payment of the prescribed fee and the production of an affidavit made before a notary public or any other officer authorised in this behalf by the State Government".

Section 13.3 states, "Any birth or death which has not been registered within one year of its occurrence, shall be registered only on an order made by a magistrate of the first class or a Presidency Magistrate after verifying the correctness of the birth or death and on payment of the prescribed fee".

What has Suryavanshi's family said about his age?

Suryavanshi's father, Sanjiv, who was his first ever coach has strongly defended his son's age in a previous interview with Press Trust of India (PTI).

"When he was eight-and-a-half-years old, he first appeared for a BCCI bone test," he said.

"He has already played [for] India under-19s. We don't fear anyone. He can again undergo an age test.

"My son has worked hard. At the age of eight years, he excelled at under-16 district trials. I would take him for his cricket coaching to Samastipur and then take him back."

There is no indication at this stage that Suryavanshi will be required to undergo any further age tests.

When will Suryavanshi make his debut for India?

If Suryavanshi continues the form he's shown in the IPL, it won't be too long until he's representing his country.

The left-hander has already made his debut at the first-class level and at the list A level, but has not had the same amount of success.

India's youngest ever T20 debutant is currently Washington Sundar, who was just 18 years and 80 days old when he made his debut against Sri Lanka in 2017. It is likely Suryavanshi beats this record by some distance.

He will find it tougher to become India's youngest ever one day and Test player, with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar holding both records.

Tendulkar was 16 years and 205 days old when he made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1989 and 16 years and 238 days old when he made his one day debut against the same opponent roughly a month later.

This is accurate. He will be 17 in September .

Anywhere between 16-18

Saying he is 14, basically means he hit puberty after the auction or is yet to hit puberty....

His age difference is similar to Naseem Shah.

Some people are older but age very slow
How many years is the difference for Naseem Shah ?

No it isn't. Vaibhav is 2 years overage max. Naseem is very likely more than that.
Point is he is overage.
No one knows by how much overage Surya is or Naseem is by certainity.

How many years is the difference for Naseem Shah ?
No idea. But like how Surya has videos where he was claimed to be 14 an year or two ago, Naseem also had a similar video aswell where he was shown to be i think 16, one or two years before his debut where again he came in as a 16 year old

Point is he is overage.
No one knows by how much overage Surya is or Naseem is by certainity.
Surya is turning 17 this coming September. There are enough pics from his childhood and his own words from 2 years ago confirm that.

Naseem is the one no one is sure about. He is at least 24-26. Not the 22 that PCB claims

Afridi later in an interview said he was 19 when he made the fastest 100. But the record still stays in cricinfo. So this record stays

so Surya is an age fudger right?

Dont know why you making this a pakistan vs india thread, all im discussing is him being an age fudger and you are giving lame justifications.

No it is still not confirmed. It is purely based on some random "interview". Nobody has any actual proof yet. His certificate would show. Age fudging is not as easy as the parent wants. Why would they want to fudge age when celebrating birthday on the actual date is a big thing. In my case my age was increased so that i could join an year earlier to the school. So i am younger than official age. Those things were possible back then. Not anymore. All birth dates are recorded. It is easily traceable.

You were the one who claimed the cases are similar. There's no comparison between India and PAK on this. Our "extreme" cases of fudging are pretty standard in PAK.

"It was his (lucky) day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day," said Shubman Gill while speaking to the broadcaster after the game.

I find a tinge of bitterness in Gill's post match comments about Vaibhav.

It was indeed a very lucky day. He got 30(6) off useless bowler Karim Janat and got 27-28 (8) off Ishant with some lucky edges.

On another day if he had gotten to face Siraj and Prasidh in tandem for 10-12 balls might have top edged straight up trying to overhit

Lol the lengths indians would go to justify these things when one of their own does it.

It is very rare that there is proof available to people like us.

In subcontinent age fudging is common practise as in jobs and in sports there are age restrictions so it gives people an advantage of getting more experince and still be able to apply.

In ahe group cricket, if u dont make it as a fake 16 year old u can still make it next or the year after that.

Now i dont know how easily or common it is in India, but it does happen in Pakistan.

You went on and on about naseem but point is Surya did age fudge right?

If you agree to it, end of story. Dont know why u dragging this discussion

No you didn't. You made a statement that the age fudging is similar to Naseem Shah. That is the post I quoted

There is available dude. Stop talking like you are living in 1980s. this is 2020s. If you want a birth certificate you need to get it from the hospital where you are born not municipal which people used to do. In certain states it is absolutey impossible to fake age last 15 years or so for a common man. Also nobody worries about "faking age" at a very young age as you don't know what they are destined to become. Manjot Kalra played under-19 with 2 months older and permanently sidelined. You earn a black spot and your career is more or less over as Rahul Dravid is very strict about age fraud. He considers it equivalent to match fixing.

Surya is turning 17 this coming September. There are enough pics from his childhood and his own words from 2 years ago confirm that.

Naseem is the one no one is sure about. He is at least 24-26. Not the 22 that PCB claims
So Vaibhav is about to turn 17, even though his official age is listed as 14? And Naseem, according to you, is 24-26 instead of his official age of 22? Do you not see the bias here? You are fine with Vaibhav's age discrepancy, but question Naseem's just because he is Pakistani, all to derail yet another thread. :facepalm :inti

People do worry about faking their ages

There is an article on this, which means in does happen

.....

Now i dont know how easily or common it is in India, but it does happen in Pakistan.

It used to happen in India, especially in Suryavanshi's home state of Bihar, where (I have no proof of this) it was supposed to be common practice.

Note that I don't know what the current overall age fudging situation in India is, nor do I know whether Surya is overage.

Suryavanshi, 14, only going to get better – Dravid

Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi is "only going to get better" but will require support after his new-found fame, says his Rajasthan Royals coach and India legend Rahul Dravid.

Royals opener Suryavanshi scored a stunning 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League on Monday, becoming the youngest player to score a hundred in men's T20s.

"Putting a certain level of support to navigate all of this attention and still allowing him that space to be a youngster is going to be important," said Dravid, who played 509 times for India and served as captain and head coach.

"That's part of being a cricketer in this country - how to handle this.

"It's impossible to distance yourself 100% but neither do you want to get sucked into it completely as well.

"So finding that happy medium is probably the answer in this situation."

Suryavanshi was signed for £103,789 (1.1 crore rupees) at last year's auction and became the IPL's youngest player when he made his debut against Lucknow Super Giants this month.

He made headlines by hitting his first ball for six in making 34 in his first innings, and in his third match scored 101 from 38 balls with seven fours and 11 sixes.

Suryavanshi has since been praised by India legend Sachin Tendulkar, former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and others.

"He's only going to develop and he's only going to get better," said Dravid, whose side play Mumbai Indians on Thursday. "Nobody is saying he's a finished article.

"No-one should be in a rush and proclaim him what he is not. He is what he is.

"He's an exceptionally talented young player who is working really hard on his skills and abilities, but he's going to have to keep improving."

Suryavanshi became the youngest player to be signed at an IPL auction when he was picked up by the Royals last year.

Before the auction a 13-year-old Suryavanshi scored a 58-ball century for India Under-19s in a youth Test against Australia Under-19s in Chennai.

"He's got a really good hand and bat speed and obviously got a really high backlift," Dravid said.

"He's got good hand-eye coordination in terms of judgment of length. That's something that's really amazed me.

"He's very quick to pick up on anything that is fractionally short or full - he's really good to capitalise on that."

Wow a thread about a teenager scoring a 100 against International bowlers and the only thing that fills up the thread is how old he is. 14 or 16, it has been an incredible achievement. Even at the age of 16, it is not easy to bat like that and score runs. Appreciate the talent. Let BCCI and the team management worry about his age. How many 16 year olds have done what Vaibhav did in this game? Only think of Sachin who vowed everyone at that age and started scoring international hundreds at the age of 17. He may or may not achieve greatness but the talent is there for everyone to see.

Why does bihar have a bad reputation?

Well, it has a very very rich tradition in Indian history. It was the cradle of civilisations, political power and culture in ancient India. It was a central point for two religions - Jainism and Buddhism. It was home to some of the greatest universities in the world (Nalanda).

But over time it was afflicted by the worst social evils, and became a hollow shell. Post independence it had some of the worst socioeconomic indicators post independence. A huge population, little industry, very poor political leadership and centralisation of agrarian power in the hands of a few meant that the state did not develop.

At one time the worst aspects of governance could be attributed to Bihar - political thuggery, electoral violence, huge power imbalances, massive corruption, exploitation and extreme feudalism

From what I‘ve read it probably comes closest to rural Sindh.

Growing up, to be a Bihari in India would mean you were subject to running jokes.

It’s changed in the past two decades, but it will take a long time for Bihar to recover.

Meanwhile those conditions of living led to a desperate struggle for survival, and to get ahead by any means. Age fudging was just a way to give your kid every possible advantage (education, service), so it was widespread.

And thank you for yet again not providing any evidence that he fudged as much as Naseem
@Major did the right thing. This thread isn't about Naseem Shah. You brought him up out of insecurity to derail the discussion. You even admitted that Vaibhav is an age fudger, but since @Major said it too, you felt the need to defend your own statement. Funny guy. :yk :inti

PLEASE STAY ON TOPIC... THREAD IS NOT ABOUT BIHAR. TALK ABOUT VAIBHAV HERE.

At 16, Vaibhav played record braking inning in IPL, but his real test today as he is up against world’s best bowler Jasprit Bumrah

Vijender Singh sparks discussion on Vaibhav Suryavanshi's age with cryptic post on social media

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s age and the authenticity of his official date of birth has been a major talking point in the cricketing world ever since the left-handed opener from Bihar got his IPL career off to a sensational start with an explosive knock against LSG and a 35-ball century against GT.

Boxing icon Vijender Singh sparked a discussion on age fraud in cricket with a post on social media on Wednesday, appearing to take a jibe at Rajasthan Royals’ opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who has been among the biggest talking points in the Indian Premier League since the mega auction in November.

“Bhai aaj kal umar choti ker ke cricket me bhe khelne lage (Players have started to lower their age in cricket as well),” Vijender wrote in a post on X on Wednesday, a couple of days after Suryavanshi’s historic 35-ball century against Lucknow Super Giants in Jaipur.

Suryavanshi, 14, in India U19 squad for England tour

Fourteen-year-old batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been named in India's Under-19s squad for this summer's multi-format tour of England.

The teenager hit the headlines in April when he became the youngest player to score a century in a men's T20, smashing 101 runs from 38 balls as Rajasthan Royals beat Gujarat Titans by eight wickets.

His knock, which included seven fours and 11 sixes, was the second fastest hundred in the Indian Premier League - and fastest by an Indian player - coming from 35 balls.

In total, Suryavanshi has scored 252 runs at a strike rate of 206.55 in seven appearances for the Royals and previously hit a 58-ball hundred in a youth Test against Australia.
