‘Bills as high as salaries’: Maryam Nawaz criticises high electricity cost

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif highlighted the issue of exorbitant electricity bills, stating that many citizens receive bills equivalent to their monthly incomes.

During the inauguration of the Punjab Socio-Economic Registry Project, CM Nawaz stressed the importance of accurate data for future planning.

"Accurate data is essential for delivering relief to those in need," she said.

She emphasised the need for a social registry to categorise the deserving population and ensure the rightful individuals receive assistance.

"Every district is compiling verified data, including information about disabled individuals. We aim to have authentic data so that the deserving get their due rights," she added.

The project includes over 5,000 registration centres, allowing citizens to register online from home or via the Punjab Socio-Economic Registry helpline at 080002345.

CM Nawaz pointed out that a large portion of Punjab's 130 million population struggles to pay their electricity bills.

"Many people's electricity bills are equal to their monthly salaries or consume a significant portion of their income, making it difficult to manage household expenses," she said.

To alleviate this burden, the government is introducing a solar energy project for 4.5 million consumers, which is expected to halve their electricity bills.

once this sham government-establishment partnership falls, Maryam Nawaz in particular cannot be allowed to escape the country. She must face the absolute, fullest, utmost wrath of the law and the people that she has desecrated throughout her wretched, pathetic existence.

Local government elections delayed further

Although hyped political leaders fulfil the ceremonial duty of representing their people at the state level, the multiplicity of day-to-day grievances plaguing citizens require a ground-level governance system however, as each successive government continues to delay the conduct of the municipality polls, many hapless locals will have to continue driving through broken roads inundated with seeping sewage water.

Despite the passage of nine years since the last local government elections were held in Punjab, there is still no indication that the current PML-N government led by Maryam Nawaz will be able to conduct the elections this year too since the proposal of various amendments to the Local Government Ordinance, 2021 amidst the background of an unfavourable politico-economic national atmosphere has forestalled any signs of progress in the formation of a local government, which could address the woes of citizens.

Pouring out their grievances to the Express Tribune, several citizens from the provincial capital shared their discontentment with the maintenance of sewerage lines, streets, roads and other deteriorating infrastructure in their area, which in the absence of a local government system, were the source of numerous problems in their daily lives. “These issues used to be resolved timely when the local government system was in place. Now, we have no option but to live with these issues, since a resolution is nowhere near in sight,” resented the locals.

According to Salman Abid, an expert in government affairs, the current Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) government in Punjab was unlikely to hold local elections until March next year. “Currently, the country's economy is in a terrible state while the people are also worried due to inflation. In such a scenario, the government's declining popularity renders it unlikely that they will succeed in the elections, unlike in the past, where the PML-N government emerged victorious during the 2015 local body elections. Therefore, after making amendments to the existing Act, the assembly would pass the ordinance and then proceed to address constituencies. However, the government needs to enhance its efficiency and the Election Commission must establish constituencies for this purpose,” analysed Abid.

According to sources of the Express Tribune, the Punjab government plans to introduce significant changes to the local government system including the constitution of urban and rural divisions, abolishment of electronic voting and appointment of administrators under the new system, which will feature Chairman and Vice Chairman positions for Union Councils (UC)’s, Tehsil and District Councils.

“CM Maryam Nawaz formed a committee in the first month of her government, which has now prepared the Local Government Act. This Act will be presented in the Assembly this month, and after its approval, elections will be held soon. The new local government system aims to be strong politically, financially, and administratively, by aligning with the spirit of the Constitution. The new system will also have seats for women and youth. Town and municipal committees, and municipal and metropolitan corporations will be formed, while Union Councils will be empowered to resolve local issues. The Union Council will also have powers to manage solid waste, water, and sanitation, which are essential aspects of the local government system. In development works, powers will be devolved to local governments, and a clear demarcation of responsibilities will be established between different levels of the government. The government plans to increase the budget for Union Councils, building on the previous allocation of Rs0.3 million by the PML-N. Additionally, capacity-building initiatives will be implemented to enable Union Councils to generate their own resources,” informed the Provincial Local Government Minister, Zeeshan Rafiq.

Punjab slashes wheat prices amid market surplus

The Punjab government has announced further reductions in the prices of 10kg and 20kg flour bags across the province.

Punjab’s Minister of Food, Bilal Yasin, confirmed the issuance of a notification detailing the price cuts.

In Lahore, the price of a 20kg flour bag has been reduced by Rs70, bringing the new price to Rs1,730 from the previous Rs1,800.

In Sheikhupura, the price of a 20kg bag has been reduced by Rs100, now selling at Rs1,640. The price has also been cut by Rs80 in Jhelum, Chakwal, Pakpattan, and Narowal, while in Multan, Sahiwal, Sargodha, and Attock, the reduction amounts to Rs60.

In Rawalpindi, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Nankana, and Okara, a decrease of Rs50 has been implemented. Meanwhile, the price in Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Chiniot, Khushab, Bhakkar, Lodhran, Rajanpur, Muzaffargarh, Layyah, and Rahim Yar Khan has been lowered by Rs40.

In Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Wazirabad, and Mandi Bahauddin, the price has dropped by Rs30, while Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Khanewal, Vehari, and Mianwali have seen a reduction of Rs20.

Last month, it was reported that small and medium farmers have been facing a tough financial situation for the last year. They earlier experienced lower corn prices and could not get the desired rate. Then they faced lower wheat prices in the domestic market, though the government fixed the price at Rs3,900 per 40 kg.

However, it was said that the government could not procure the desired quantity from the farmers since it has imported a reasonable quantity since October 2023 and "does not have the capacity" to hold surplus wheat.

This policy rate gradually climbed to 5.5% in July 2023 within a span of 18 months and remained stable at that level. This shows that the acceleration in prices has slowed down in the world, specifically in the US.

Punjab govt to offer Rs14 per unit reduction in electricity bills

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif announced on Friday a significant reduction in electricity bills for Punjab's residents.

In a press conference held in Lahore, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president stated that consumers using up to 500 units of electricity in Punjab would receive a relief of Rs 14 per unit for August and September.

Addressing the media alongside Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Sharif expressed his concern over the ongoing economic challenges faced by the public, particularly the rising inflation and surging electricity costs.

"I am fully aware of the hardships people are enduring due to inflation and the exorbitant electricity bills. My mind often returns to 2017, a time when inflation was under control, and electricity bills were manageable," Sharif remarked.

He stressed the stark difference between his tenure and the current economic situation, recalling that during his government, the value of the US dollar was maintained at Rs104 for four years, interest rates were as low as 5 percent, and essential commodities were affordable.

"Back then, the country was on a path to prosperity. Today, however, people are struggling to make ends meet," he lamented.

Sharif criticised the previous government, specifically the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership, for the country's current economic woes. "The people responsible for bringing the country to this point must be held accountable. Those who engineered the economic crisis are unforgivable," he asserted.

Highlighting his administration's achievements, Sharif pointed to the elimination of load-shedding and the completion of power plants in record time.

"We inherited a country with 18-hour power cuts. We built power plants and ended load-shedding within three years, without raising electricity prices," he said.

The former premier also praised Maryam Nawaz for her efforts in reducing the price of essential commodities and improving public services in Punjab. "Maryam has worked tirelessly to lower the cost of flour and bread and to enhance the health and education systems in the province," Sharif noted.

Sharif also touched on Pakistan's strategic achievements, recalling how his government made the country a nuclear power and freed it from the clutches of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"If we had not been disrupted in 2017, Pakistan would have been in a much stronger position today," he said, referring to his disqualification from office.

In addition to the reduction in electricity bills, Sharif announced a Rs 700 billion investment in a solar panel scheme for Punjab. He urged the current government to continue taking steps to alleviate the financial burden on the public, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions to the ongoing energy crisis.

The announcement comes as a part of PML-N's broader strategy to regain public support ahead of the upcoming elections, positioning itself as a party focused on economic relief and stability.

After power subsidy, Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz launches new interest-free housing scheme

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday launched the provincial government’s Apna Chhat Apna Ghar (our roof, our house) housing scheme, less than a week after her government announced plans for an electricity subsidy in Punjab that has roiled coalition allies.

During a ceremony, the chief minister said that owners of 1-5 marlas of land in urban areas and 1-10 marlas in rural areas would receive interest-free loans of Rs1.5m from the Punjab Government to build houses. “For the first three months, landowners will not pay one paisa,” the chief minister said.

“There’s no place like home,” CM Maryam said. “Those who have their own home, their own roof, they don’t understand what it is like to be homeless.”

She has sought her revenge by ensuring Imran Khan's imprisonment under conditions so dire that she herself could scarcely endure them for more than a few minutes. When she inevitably departs from Pakistan, because, let’s face it, neither she nor her family has the spine to remain incarcerated on behalf of the Pakistani people, I sincerely hope she’s barred from ever returning.

As for her political prowess, she might just be the most 'special child' any politician in Pakistan has ever produced, though I say 'special' with a hint of sarcasm that even she might struggle to comprehend.

Maryam Nawaz vows to hold attackers accountable, visits wounded cops in RHK

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif pledged to bring those who attack police to justice as she visited Rahim Yar Khan on Saturday to boost the morale of police officers.

On Thursday, a police van in Rahim Yar Khan was attacked with rockets, resulting in the deaths of over 12 policemen and causing multiple injuries.

Maryam Nawaz sets standard for other provinces: Azma Bokhari

Provincial Information Minister Azma Bokhari praised Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday, calling her a role model for other provinces.

She contrasted Nawaz’s efforts with those of the former ruling party, which she accused of offering only lies, propaganda, and accusations. Bokhari lauded Nawaz for her public service initiatives, including electric bikes, the “Apna Ghar Apni Chhat” program, relief in electricity bills, and the “Himmat Card.” She noted that these projects are being adopted by Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The minister emphasized that Nawaz's leadership is moving away from politics of division and hatred, asserting that the people of Pakistan have witnessed the detrimental effects of those who spread chaos and discord. She added that the disgraced individuals who once hoped for Pakistan's downfall are now seeking forgiveness.

Maryam Nawaz vows to provide homes to low income households

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has pledged to provide low income households their own home.

Founder and Chairman of Akhuwat Dr. Amjad Saqib called on Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz. CM Maryam commended the social services of Akhuwat under the leadership of Dr. Amjad Saqib. Dr. Saqib lauded the Punjab CM’s efforts in providing relief in electricity bills and the "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar" program.

Maryam Nawaz announced that the government aimed to fulfill the dream of home ownership for low-income households across the province. She stated that the 'Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar' program has already been initiated in Punjab and will be expanded each year.

The "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar" program was set to become the largest and most affordable housing project in Pakistan’s history. Its primary objective was to provide housing to economically weaker sections of society, Maryam Nawaz stressed.

She informed that to reduce the financial burden on the public, government subsidies will be provided and the program will feature easy monthly installments.

Punjab CM highlighted that under the program, the construction of sustainable and eco-friendly homes will be promoted. The launch of this revolutionary housing project was expected to generate employment for millions and improve the lives of countless families.

This program will be the first major initiative in Pakistan to offer interest-free loans for home construction ensuring that the provision of homes for the homeless was a top priority, Maryam Nawaz insisted.

She stated that the project will be launched in three plans under the Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar program. Residents can apply for loans of up to Rs. 1.5 million for plots of up to 10 marlas in rural areas and 5 marlas in urban areas. Monthly repayments under the "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar" scheme will be approximately Rs. 14,000, with no interest.

In big cities, four-story flats will be constructed on government land, which will be allocated through a lottery system with easy installments. Private housing schemes will offer three to five marla homes, with the government providing a subsidy of up to Rs 1 million per home. Applicants in private housing projects will be able to own their homes by paying off the remaining installments over five years.

Dr. Amjad Saqib praised Maryam Nawaz's commitment to addressing common man's issues.

Efforts underway to provide relief to public: CM Maryam

Talking to citizens at a roadside tea stall, on her return from School Nutrition Program launching ceremony in DG Khan, she said price hike has now been lowered and edible items including flour, sugar, oil, pulses and vegetables become cheaper.

She said PML-N President Nawaz Sharif is seriously concerned about costly electricity bills and federal and Punjab governments are striving hard to provide further relief to the public in this regard.

Its worth mentioning here that, former Prime Minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif has announced a major relief for electricity consumers in Punjab, with focus on providing relief to low-income households.

The PML-N supremo stated that consumers using up to 500 units of electricity will receive a relief of Rs 14 per unit.

Sharif praised Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz for her efforts in providing relief to the people and announced that she will be launching a solar panel scheme to provide further relief.

He added that the Punjab government has allocated Rs 700 billion for the solar panel scheme, which will help further reduce electricity bills in the future.

The relief package includes a relief of Rs 14 per unit for consumers using up to 500 units, which will cost the Punjab government Rs 45 billion.

Punjab withdraws Rs14 power subsidy for ICT

The Punjab government has decided to immediately withdraw the Rs14 per unit electricity subsidy for the consumers of the Islamabad Capital Territory while succumbing to the pressure exerted by the International Monetary Fund.

The decision would deprive the consumers of the Islamabad Capital Territory from the Rs14

per unit subsidy for the month of September, according to a notification issued by the Islamabad Electricity Supply Company (IESCO).

The consumers of Islamabad city and adjoining areas will now receive their electricity bills on the new increased prices which, the federal government had notified with effect from July 1 to comply with the condition of the IMF. The federal government had increased the electricity prices by up to 51% for the sake of the IMF but still it remains unable to secure the loan approval.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari confirmed to The Express Tribune that the subsidy has been withdrawn to the extent of the Islamabad Capital Territory. "As per telephonic discussion dated 03-09-2024, instructions regarding discontinuation of CM Punjab Relief at Rs14 per unit for domestic single-phase consumers having consumption range from 201 to 500 units is being discontinued for Islamabad Capital Territory for the billing month of September 2024," reads the notification. The subsidy will continue for the consumers of Punjab till September 30.

The Express Tribune had exclusively reported on September 3 that the IMF had stopped all the provinces from giving any subsidy during the 37-month period of the programme and to discontinue the existing package of Rs14 per unit by September 30.

However, in the case of the consumers of the ICT, the Punjab government discontinued the subsidy after one month – a month before the original expiry date.

"Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif wanted to give the subsidy to the consumers of Islamabad but due to the IMF agreement the citizens of Islamabad could not get this relief," said Bukhari.

She, however, maintained that the subsidy would continue for the consumers of Punjab for one more month till the end of September. The provincial information minister added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was taking steps to give relief to the people.

However, The Express Tribune reported last week that the IMF had also rejected Pakistan's new plan to reduce electricity prices by Rs6 per unit by pumping in Rs2.8 trillion. The plan had been built on flimsy assumptions of getting Rs1.4 trillion from the four federating units, including Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and raising more commercial loans.

The federal government had also delayed the implementation of up to 51% increase in the electricity prices for up to 200 units consumers till October. This facility is also going to end and the consumers falling in the lower income groups would face a major price shock from next month. The consumers of three provinces having monthly consumption of over 200 units are already facing the brunt.

The Punjab government approved the Rs14 per unit subsidy in August and September electricity bills for the consumers in the province and Islamabad, using from 201 to 500 units. The provincial finance minister had reportedly said that the actual cost of the subsidy was Rs90 billion but the Punjab chief minister unjab said that the cost would be Rs45 billion.

The decision to discontinue the electricity subsidy for the consumers of Islamabad Capital Territory would save a few billion rupees. It is now estimated that the two-month relief to Punjab consumers may cost the provincial government around Rs60 billion.

After the Punjab government's sudden subsidy package, the IMF had introduced another condition and made it binding upon all the provincial governments that they would not introduce any policy or action which could be considered to undermine or run against any of the commitments given under the $7 billion programme.

The new conditions may also carry implications for the Punjab's plan to dole out Rs700 billion under the head of giving solar panels to the consumers having monthly power consumption of up to 500 units.

Due to bad governance, higher line losses, higher taxes, putting burden of subsidies on the consumers of over 300 units monthly consumption and expensive deals, the electricity has now become unaffordable for the majority of the residential consumers.

These factors have pushed the prices to Rs64 to Rs76 per unit for residential and commercial consumers. But instead of finding a permanent solution, both the federal and the Punjab provincial governments came up with a two-month subsidy plan.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed officials to ensure top-tier security for the upcoming Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations.

During a law and order session, she called for enhanced security measures, including the deployment of bullet-proof vehicles, APCs, and bullet-proof vests for police officers.

Additionally, she approved an expansion of provincial check posts and a grant of Rs1 billion for the police force.

Maryam Nawaz emphasised the need for special training of officers stationed at check posts and strengthening border security.

The session also approved the restructuring and advanced training of the Border Military Police, along with the introduction of body cameras for police officers on duty.

The Chief Minister further called for a campaign to eliminate illegal weapons and underscored the government's commitment to protecting lives and property in Punjab.

She stressed the importance of a non-discriminatory crackdown on criminal elements and urged a strong response to any attacks on police check posts to deter future incidents.

A ban on camera use and social media activity by on-duty officers was also enacted.

Taking serious notice of the matter, City Police Officer (CPO) Captain (retired) Muhammad Ali Zia directed the Lyalpur Division superintendent of police to probe into the incident and submit a report besides taking action against the official.

Last month, the Sindh Police announced the immediate suspension of 12 officers after videos of them engaging in inappropriate behaviour on social media went viral.

The suspensions were ordered by Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon, following an official statement shared on the police department’s Facebook page.

The officers were specifically reprimanded for creating TikTok videos, violating departmental regulations.

CM Maryam Nawaz launches first government-led autism school

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz laid the foundation of Pakistan’s first government-run autism school and launched the Himat Card program, which aims to support differently-abled individuals.

Both initiatives reflect her commitment to improving the lives of those with special needs across the province.

During her visit to the site of the autism school, CM Maryam Nawaz was briefed on the state-of-the-art facilities being constructed.

The school will feature a ground and first floor, with 11 classrooms for the junior section and 10 for the senior section. In addition to classrooms, the school will include a cubical speech session room, therapy room, pre-vocational training room, a daily living activity room, and a computer lab.

The first floor will house three classrooms, a multi-purpose hall, committee room, library, and resource room.

Notably, the building is designed to accommodate two additional floors for future expansion, ensuring capacity for growth.

Security features, such as fire alarms and a telephone exchange, will also be installed, and construction is set to be completed within one year under Maryam Nawaz’s direction.

The chief minister has also instructed the immediate recruitment of autism experts and emphasized that consultation with specialists will shape the school’s operational plans.

Expressing her dedication to the cause, Maryam Nawaz said that autistic children deserve "kindness, empathy, and love" and that the school holds a special place in her heart.

In addition to the autism school, CM Maryam Nawaz launched the Himat Card program, which will initially provide 65,000 deserving individuals with a quarterly allowance of Rs. 10,500.

The Himat Card will also serve as a travel card, enabling free rides on the Orange Line and Metro Buses in Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi, starting from October 15.

At the launch event, the chief minister announced that more cards would be made available through applications sent directly to her office.

In a symbolic gesture of inclusivity, she invited differently-abled individuals to sit beside her, while ministers and officials were seated behind them.

Maryam Nawaz distributed the Himat Cards to attendees and personally engaged with recipients, highlighting her affection for the children present.

One young boy, Muhammad Azeem, expressed his gratitude by gifting the CM a pencil drawing, calling the Himat Card a "blessing" for him and his peers.

The chief minister emphasized the importance of the Himat Card for those unable to earn a livelihood, noting that it would alleviate financial burdens for families.

She reassured attendees that artificial limbs and other assistive devices would also be provided to those in need.

During the ceremony, CM Maryam praised her team for their efforts in launching the Himat Card and acknowledged the resilience of differently-abled individuals, applauding their hope and courage.

"The Rs. 10,500 may not seem substantial, but it provides essential support," she said, affirming her dedication to improving the lives of differently-abled people.

She also highlighted the achievements of the PML-N government, stating that welfare and progress initiatives have been consistently prioritized despite economic challenges.

The event featured a documentary titled Hope and Success Journey, showcasing the Punjab government’s initiatives, including the Himat Card project.

Attendees were also treated to a presentation of the national anthem in sign language, celebrating the differently-abled community.

Notable attendees included Senator Pervez Rashid, Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, and other provincial ministers and officials, all of whom expressed their support for these impactful programs.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s claim questioned by foreign news outlet

A foreign news outlet countered Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz’s assertion that she is suffering from an illness that can only be treated in the United States or Switzerland.

A recent BBC report contradicted Maryam Nawaz’s statement that parathyroid disease can be only be treated in the two countries. The BBC in its report claimed that parathyroid can also be treated in Pakistan.

The BBC in its report claimed that treatment for parathyroid disease is available in Pakistan, and experts confirm that medication and injections are readily accessible.

Dr. Qaiser Sajjad, an ENT specialist, also said that the disease is not severe and treatment is affordable in Pakistan.

“Dr. Mateen Hotiana agrees that basic surgery for this disease is possible in Pakistan, but according to him, a new surgery called minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has been introduced in major countries of the world. This is currently not possible in Pakistan,” the BBC report read.

The Punjab chief minister speaking to newsmen in London said that she is suffering from parathyroid disease, which according to her requires treatment in Switzerland or the US.

Maryam Nawaz recently said that she suffers from parathyroid gland issues, not cancer, while debunking the ‘rumors’ about her health.

“My treatment is usually done in Pakistan,” she said and added that due to the specialised nature of condition, she sometimes seeks care in Switzerland or the United States. “Parathyroid treatment is only available in these two countries, and not even in England.”

What is Parathyroid?

Parathyroid glands are four small glands located behind the thyroid gland in human’s neck, playing a vital role in regulating calcium levels in blood and bones. They produce parathyroid hormone (PTH), which helps maintain the balance of calcium essential for various bodily functions, like your nervous system and muscle function.

When calcium levels drop, parathyroid glands release PTH to stimulate the release of calcium from bones and increase its absorption from food. When calcium levels rise, PTH production decreases, and calcium is stored in bones or excreted.

One common issue is hyperparathyroidism, where one or more parathyroid glands become overactive, producing excessive PTH and leading to high blood calcium levels. This can cause symptoms like osteoporosis, kidney stones, fatigue, and heart problems. Treatment usually involves surgery to remove the affected glands. Minimally invasive parathyroid surgery (MIRP) is a modern approach that offers a quicker recovery time and less scarring.

CM Maryam orders action against VC of Multan’s Nishtar medical varsity, other officials

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday visited the Nishtar Hospital Multan and directed the health secretary to initiate strict departmental action against Nishtar Medical University Multan Vice Chancellor Mehnaz Khakwani, MS Dr Mohammad Kazim Khan, head of the nephrology department, and five other medics and other staff after multiple inquiry reports confirmed outbreak of the HIV/AIDs led to transmission of the virus to 25 patients.

The CM also directed Punjab health secretary Azmat Mahmood to move a case to the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council to get the licences of the medics involved in this regard suspended.

Two lady doctors were also among those who were facing action besides official in charge of the nursing section of the nephrology department and a male registrar.

There were reports that the CM wants the removal of all officers found guilty from their positions when the inquiry reports pointed out that the record of the patients tested positive for HIV/AIDs was also tampered with in an attempt to dodge the higher authorities.

Declaring it a criminal negligence, the inquiry reports had recommended tough actions against the senior management and other medics.

An official privy to the CM’s visit to the hospital said that Ms Nawaz reached the office of NMU VC at noon and called all relevant officers found guilty of the charges in four separate investigations/inquiries carried out by relevant agencies and departments.

He said the findings of the inquiries were furnished in the meeting and the CM told them about the gross negligence and blunders committed by them before, during and after the dialysis of the kidney failure patients who visited the nephrology department of the hospital.

Quoting the findings of the inquiries, she expressed utter displeasure and reprimanded them, saying the first patient tested positive for HIV/AIDs on Oct 11 and then second on Oct 26. The hospital management avoided investigations of the first case and acted only when the second one surfaced the same month, she said.

The official said that the chief minister again reprimanded them when she quoted the inquiries that found the top management of the institute allegedly tampered with the record when it came to know that the virus had been transmitted in many patients due to negligence.

‘Fake’ lab reports

The officials found guilty of the charges managed to get ‘fake reports’ of the affected patients from private labs to mislead the authorities, the CM said.

When the chief minister asked the Nishtar institute principal present in the meeting to explain his position, the latter said he had nothing to do with the entire matter as his position had no power even to transfer a clerk.

During the meeting, Ms Nawaz revealed that a senior representative of the Multan chapter of the Pakistan Medical Association had played a ‘dirty role’ when he exerted pressure on the relevant staff for tampering with the record of the HIV/AIDs patients.

He was also faculty member of the NMU, the CM said, adding that all those who were found guilty of the charges/negligence in the outbreak of the HIV/AIDs would have to face dire consequences. She directed the health secretary to initiate departmental action against all of them and also get their licences cancelled from the PMDC.

Explaining the true spirit of the CM’s action, the official said that the CM had no mandate to remove or suspend the NMU VC being a constitutional post. He said even the Punjab governor, the chancellor of the universities, could not remove or suspend the VC. According to him, it can be done only when the vice chancellor herself would resign from the post.

About others, the official said that the Punjab government was authorised to remove or suspend all other guilty officers as per the laid-down rules and regulations.

There were reports that the health department had issued an order for the suspension/removal of some of the medics, while it emerged late night that a case has been processed to initiate action against the VC.

The total marks for matriculation exams will remain at 1,100, with the new subjects being integrated within the existing framework.
