Mushfiqur Rahim, the first ever Bangladeshi to score 5,000 Test runs, expressed satisfaction after achieving this feat and playing this long and informed his intention to take part in every format as long as possible with good fitness and form.
The diminutive batter scored a gritty hundred against Sri Lanka amid challenging weather in the port city where extreme heat and humid condition is posing a great challenge to the players in the ongoing Test match.
He played 282 balls in his 105-run innings and struck just four boundaries.
“Alhamdulillah, I am happy to score 5,000 Test runs as the first Bangladeshi. Hopefully it will not be the last. There are many more talented players who are capable of doing such things. Not only seniors of our team, hopefully other players who are juniors now can score eight-10 thousand runs in Tests one day,” Mushfiq said during the post day press conference.
Mushfiq has been criticized in recent years for his premeditated reverse sweep shot as the experienced batter often lost his wicket playing this way in crucial moments of the game across different formats.
But throughout the course of his 282-ball innings, Mushfiq did not play a single reverse sweep.
When asked about it in the press conference, Mushfiq answered if conditions suit him then he will not stop playing his favorite shot
“I thought it would be the first question in the press conference (smiles). Actually, this depends on the wicket. This is a very good batting friendly wicket here where you can play well with the straight bat, so you don’t need different kind of shots that much. And I would like to mention one thing, if you see videos of my two double centuries, then you will find I played quite a few reverse sweeps in those two innings. I strongly believe it’s my favorite shot. I know it’s a risky shot but will not stop playing reverse sweeps in future,” said Mushfiq.
He also said he wants to play in every format as long as he is fit and performing well and that he has no intention to retire from T20Is.
“I have no plans to take retirement from T20Is. My wish is to play for Bangladesh for each and every opportunity available. If I have the fitness and performances and if I have been selected then I want to play as long as possible,” he said.
Mushfiq made his debut back in 2005 at Lord’s and in his 17 years of Test career he has scored 5,037 runs so far from 81 matches with eight hundreds and average of 36.5.
When questioned how he wants to remember his career and continue this legacy, Mushfiq said with grief that there is no value of experience in this country.
“Nothing to demand actually. There is actually no value of experience in Bangladesh. I have played for 17 years and come this far, that’s a big thing for me. Our manager brought a cake in the dressing room and I celebrated my 5,000-run mark celebration after day’s play. While celebrating, I offered Joy (Mahmudul Hasan) the first piece of cake and told him, you are the junior most batsman here. You have a chance to score 10,000 runs. If you can score that, I expect you will give to the next junior most batsman. And thus, the legacy will continue,” said Mushfiq.
Tamim Iqbal was also on course towards becoming the first Bangladeshi to reach the 5,000 club yesterday.
But the left hander retired hurt on 133, 19 runs away from the feat, and Mushfiq crossed the landmark eventually.
Tamim was seen delighted in the dressing room balcony and appreciated with claps when Mushfiq made it and later Mushfiq informed Tamim congratulated him with both arms.
“Tamim congratulated me. He broke my 200-run record. When your friend or brother does something good, you will also feel good. After breaking my 200-run record Tamim told me that I’ll break this record again one day. And later I did it. I believe it’s a very healthy competition for the team. We teammates always support and encourage each other in this way,” Mushfiq concluded.
