[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Is Shubman Gill the best young cricketer in the world today?

Tbf Rana Faheem was the most impressive bowler against him,

Rana v Gill is the McGrath v Tendulkar of our era.

What a blessed time to be alive!!
He hardly bowled 3 overs so how can you judge them so early?

Opener Shubman Gill has attained a career-best second position and is the highest-ranked among three India players who are now in the top 10 of the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, the first time this happened since January 2019.
Gill, who had scored 58 and figured in a 121-run opening partnership with captain Rohit Sharma in the Asia Cup match against Pakistan, has moved up one spot while Sharma and Virat Kohli have gained two places each and are sitting in eighth and ninth positions, respectively. Sharma also scored a half-century against Sri Lanka this past week while Kohli advances thanks to his unbeaten 122 against Pakistan.

That is how you perform when you come from a proper cricketing circuit, shbman has the abilities to become a future super star.
How he attacked Shaheen Afridi shows how mentaly strong he is.

YEs on flat pitches only. A
hint of swing, spin then he gets bamboozled quite easily. He is not as good as you guys make him out to be.

Superb batting once again.

Carrying his team singlehandedly against Bangladesh.

Calling Gill a FTB is gross injustice to his talent . He sure has some chinks against the moving ball , but only to the extent as many modern day batsmen

Impressive. Against a weak side in an inconsequential match.

I have to see what he does in a pressure game.

Pretty sure you've been here before under multiple accounts saying the same thing across Kohli's 15-year career :rp

If he is well set he becomes more and more dangerous as he has added more gears to his batting. That insane six hitting against NZ showed us the full range.Kohli was not a massive six hitter by choice. He can hit sixes when he wants to. But he prefers playing on the ground. Gill goes for sixes after certain stage.

For sure he is going to be a next big thing for India after Virat Kohli.

I think it's jaiswal after the world cup.He just don't care who is bowling or what are they bowling. He got it from his Royals team mate Butler I guess.
Not really. He always batted that way. Since under-19 days. Even in under-19 final he was the only one who stepped up.

He was a typical sub continental opener till last year.In an interview,He attributed his power game to his gym work.

Finally a top knock from Gill. These tough runs is what I want to see more from Gill. Before yesterday, he mostly scores easy runs on flat tracks like Babar does.

Ramiz Raja stated regarding Shubman Gill:

“You can say that he has a lazy elegance. He does classical batting as he not only hits sixes and fours but he also plays strokes and scores singles besides being a temperamentally strong player.”

“So, when he is eyeing to play an original classical inning on the ground, then he will sure do it. He can score runs on a difficult pitch.”

“You can see, Rohit Sharma always struggles on difficult pitches. Sometimes, he gets bowled and sometimes, he can’t focus. However, he [Shubman Gill] is his perfect replacement.”

“He might be the number one after his century. He has a lot of potential and sometimes, I get frustrated because he is from Amritsar which is only 40 miles away from Lahore. But, this distance makes a big difference on batting specialities.”

When you see his stats, you can't deny that he's the best young cricketer in the world today. His ODI average is massive 64.40 and he will be one to watch in the upcoming World Cup.

Shubman Gill has proved it again that he is unstoppable to secure number one spot in ODI batter's ranking. He's undoubtedly the future of Indian cricket. All eyes are on him during world cup. Shubman Gill scored 74 runs in just 63 balls and provided an explosive start to India for chasing down 276

Killer performance by Gill. The prince show. Century Against Australia

hubman Gill has 7 centuries from 39 innings in 2023.

83 from 65
100 from 92 without any four or six...
Does that count as selfishness ?

Otherwise a good innings.

He started at 9 from 19
then his next 43 runs was from just 18 balls
But then his next 50 was from 60 balls

Quite a seesaw of a strike rate there

Babar Azam’s title as best ODI batsman under serious threat now. Only 43 points separated them both before this series, lets see how much of that gap is closed now.

Mark of a player with abundance of confidence in his ability. He knows he can make up for the SR within like 2-3 overs in the game at any point.

Another fifty is next match then gill is going to become new world no. 1 batsman in ODi

No doubt he is a great player, but does he deserve to be #1? Or is he just a minnow basher?

This is why stats tell us nothing. His innings vs Pakistan in Asia cup super 4 was nothing less than match winning becouse he set the tempo of entire match by taking on Shaheen Afridi in Power Play.

Babar catching strays from Ramiz, the man who was instrumental in building and hyping his brand.

You love to see it.

It's the other way round. Maybe on current form, he is #1 but he is still long way to go to become a great player.

Also, nothing wrong in being a minnow basher in early days of your career.

Let him do it in tests first.
its too early for him to say the best of the game but yeah he is on the right track to be one of the best but still he needs to perform in all formats consistently like wise babar.

Right now there is only 1 player who owns the crown which is Babar Azam.

Even Abdullah shafique has done better than Gill in tests.

yeah but shubman going good i would say and he will get things right for test matches too. He never played too many tests so its a bit early to judge him in that specific format i think.

I love the way he use his arm extensions to play any shot it looks simply too easy for him.

He is known for loose shots. Not a minnow basher by any stretch. He has absolutely owned Starc in Tests. But played a couple of loose shots in ODI against Starc. Scoreboard will tell you he struggles against Starc. In reality it is not the case. He destroyed him in Tests. He is still a work in progress in terms of shot selection. Only one particular weakness i have seen is against spinners especially spinners who can take the ball away from him. But he is getting better.

He's played 18 tests that's a good amount of tests but he should still be backed as he's a good number but he needs to have better numbers in tests.

Yeah, minnow basher is a wrong word. More of a flat pitch bully. Just need to work on tightening his game more especially on tough pitches else he seems fine.

The thing about all format players is they cannot have different type of games for different formats and be consistent. They are going to be slightly off in one format or the other. Kohli was probably the first guy to show one can be good in all formats at the same time with same style of cricket. Guys like Gill still has to master the art. He definitely tries to get the feel of the ball all the time which results in poor shot selection. On the other end he can also be overcautious and get out like he left a straight ball in WTC final. That format adoption is tricky. Jaiswal played one T20 well. Then failed in other 2. It is very tricky to adapt yourself to different formats and be equally successful at the same. Kohli did for 3 or 4 years and set the bench mark. I won't mind him giving up T20 format. Right now oDIs are his strong suit. In Tests he needs some fine tuning.

As per reports: Shubman Gill has been hospitalised in Chennai with dengue fever and low platelet count.

What a bummer. Someone who was all predicted to set the world cup ablaze is going to miss best part of the world cup

Damn I think his world cup is done and dusted now . bring Jaiswal to replace him . please no tuktuk Raj .

it would be too early to bring young jaiswal into the world cup, let him play few more games and bring him once he gets ready for internationals.

Source please as few hours ago We get the News - Shubman Gill has recovered 70% to 80%.
Ok now get the source
When Dravid said Gill might play the first match, I knew he will be out for long. Our coach sahab is infamous for telling open lies in PC.

Now most likely he is out of Pakistan matches .or maybe for 10 more days .not looking good at all as Kishan is a heck

India’s talented young batter Shubman Gill wins the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September after run-scoring feats in his country’s trophy-winning Asia Cup campaign and the subsequent ODI series against Australia.
ICC

Maybe today but honestly Sachin and Kohli were way more aggressive at such age.

Defn not from the same cloth.

Shubman Gill departs after scoring a well-made half-century.

Mahmudullah takes a brilliant catch near the ropes.

There's an 18 point difference between Babar and Gill in the No 1 ODI rankings.
Will Gill be able to overtake him considering he just scored a half century ?

It will be a bad idea to chase that rank 1. Gill should play according to team plan and it seems Indians have decide that both openers are going to go hard even if taking risk then make the rest of batsmen job easier.

It will be a bad idea for Gill to worry about ranking by trying to not get out.

This. Kudos for saying.

I hope this chasing the ranking mentality doesn't creep into the Indian team ever.

Shubman Gill likes to play against New Zealand. Are we going to witness another mastercalss from this young batting sensation at Dharamsala?

Another foolish comparison between a Pakistani and Indian player that will end in tears for Pakistani fans but they will never learn.

Gill is in a different league. He is better than Babar let alone Abdullah.

Gill vs Abdullah in a few years will look as funny as Kohli vs Babar does today.

As far as Test performances is concerned, Gill doesn’t have the luxury of playing on Rawalpindi highway like Abdullah and Babar and that is because unlike PCB, BCCI is focused on winning Tests by producing turning wickets instead of helping its batsmen boost their averages.

Gill would turn into Bradman if he plays on the flat wickets of Pakistan while Babar and Abdullah won’t average more than 30 on those Indian wickets that turn from the first session on day 1.

Hope Gill has saved his best for the business end of this WC.

He was in peak form. This stupid dengue definitely interrupted his flow. But that is not the only reason. He is a bit over-confident with his approach. Playing way too many shots.

It takes time to recover from Dengue. The weakness and muscular pain is really bad.

He’s struggled on that nip backer. This is the 4th time I’ve seen him get out to this delivery in last month or so.
Seems overhyped player for flat pitches. 22 average in World Cup so far across 5 games.

Gill world turn Bradburn wow! If he doesn’t improve his game against quality pacers, he will not remain in this Indian batting line up.

Abdullah has looked much better batter than Gill at this World Cup even though he just made his debut.

Abdullah average 53, SR 93
Gill average 22, SR 87

Abdullah Already has an away double century in test cricket in SL and averages 50+ in test cricket whereas Gill has misfired in tests with a paltry average of 32.

Abdullah has been playing selfish knocks and leaving the team high and dry, that’s not good.

Prior to the WC, his record in ODIs was unbelievable (still is).

I know he's returning from dengue, but thus far I've been disappointed with his application personally. He's had starts and thrown them away on literally every occassion this WC.

There's clearly a quality player in there but application is as important as ability.
