[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Is Shubman Gill the best young cricketer in the world today?

Based on bilateral bullying? At the end of the day, results need to shout.
World Cup is the place where every team fields their A team. You’re at home, you have no pressure for runs because the team is winning anyway and pressure is on Kohli/Rohit, yet you are failing again and again. Babar, for all his weaknesses and issues, nailed the first World Cup and scored 478 runs in England, which was the highest for any youngster playing their first World Cup.

India right now is a stronger bowling unit than batting unit. This is one the top 2 or 3 bowling unit I’ve seen from Asia ever. The batting is world class but if I compared this batting with India’s in 2011, then there is no comparison (Sachin, Sehwag, Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Raina, Gambhir). There is no weak link. This 2023 batting is still reliant on Rohit and Kohli, the rest are not at the same level. Pandya is also injured so it puts more pressure on top 6.
India should very quickly think about making this change because the KO is coming.
Based on batting plans, Ishan doesn’t follow batting plans of the team and is cocky.
Indian team shouldn’t try to show individual brilliance unless needed, you play as a team to win.

Abdullah before the started started was my d

in tests Abdullah is better.
Abdullah is not half the batsman Gill is in any format. Pakistani fans are not only extremely delusional but also very poor readers of the game.

They are wrong 99% of the time and catch up very late.

He is a great talent but i think his feet movement is awful, he doesnt move his back leg at all while playing any shot.

He will get struck where ball will get a bit of seam or swing.

He has improved massively on that from his first innings to today but yes a long way to go coz at 145 swing and seam would trouble him unless he is quick.

Shubman Gill is gonna be the world's best batsman by the time the 2027 world cup comes around, don't @ me

Harry Brook is a far better batsman than Gill. After England's appalling show, the era of Brook is about to begin.

I understand. But right now Indian batting is reliant of Rohit and Kohli, and both of whom are due on failures. The only other guy who has been consistent in Asia cup and World Cup is Iyer. If Kohli fell early in KO, let’s see if others stand up.

You can’t take shortcuts and judge pedigree based on passports. Gill is currently a failure in tests with an average of 33 in 18 games, 8 tests of which were played at home, 2 in WI and 2 in Bangladesh.
He needs a lot of dev. Abdullah has shown a lot more mettle than Gill in Test cricket and now on the World Cup.

Gill’s 91 in Brisbane on day 5 against Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon to set up India’s historic 329 chase and series win is bigger than Abdullah’s entire career so far.

Do we really need to compare players here? This thread is all about Shubman gill I guess.

Gill’s 91 in Brisbane on day 5 against Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon to set up India’s historic 329 chase and series win is bigger than Abdullah’s entire career so far.
Muhammad Wasim also scored 91 against Australia in Australia and setup a win in the 99 test series. It was up against a better Aussie team and bowling attack consisting of Warne, Fleming, McGrath. Do I now need to believe that he’s the greatest Pakistani batter? One off innings are insufficient.
18 tests is a significant time. You cannot live off of 1 innings. You have to show consistency and ability to excel in a variety of conditions.
Gill very well may still become a GOAT. But right now, if he doesn’t improve his game, he could lose his place in this hyper competitive Indian batting monolith.

He will come around. Remember Kohli had a horrible first series and he himself told in the press i deserve to be dropped. HE did get dropped. Took a few years to find his groove in Tests. It is very hard to be successful in all 3 formats you are going to be inadequate in one format or the other. Kohli was pretty good in all 3 formats for 3 or 4 years. Even now he is good enough. Gill will have to switch between T20 , ODI, Tests seamlessly as he is the one guy who will play in all formats. May be Jaiswal. He is not accumulator. He is naturally aggressive. So he will have display some inconsistency until 25 or so. India will back him. That is what matters. Even as a fan who has been rooting for him since 2018, i don't care about him having bragging rights. I rather want him to develop silently in the background.

Okay. Let’s see. It does feel unfair for guys like Kishan, Samson, and so many FC stalwarts. If Gill fails in KOs, India should reconsider their approach with Gill. There are so many options

Worst case will be he will be dropped down the order. He will never be dropped.

After this cup, you probably gotta rate Rachin Ravindra as the better young batting star.

Feel sad for him, was in the form of his life before Dengue hit him hard - probably still hasn’t recovered his peak fitness. This could have been his cup- but hopefully he can still salvage something of it and turns up at the knock outs.

It doesn't really matter if he is not rated by anyone although it is not the case. He is going to be future India's best match-winner. The potential is massive wit him. Ravindra is going to be NZ's match-winner. He is a class batsman too.

That’s a different conversation. The title of the thread is the best young cricketer in the world today. Ravindra has been superior in every aspect, but of course Shubman can pull ahead in the future.

Shubman Gill has not clicked in this World Cup as everybody was expecting him to. But he is one for the future. Plays some fine shots and is also aggressive.

He's having a nightmare of a tournament, even Iyer recovered well and batted beautifully against the Lankans and South Africans. Hope Gill fires in the knockouts, till now I get a feeling he is being overrated, has done nothing of note after the Gabba knock. Much more excited about Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Abdullah may not be better than Gill abilitywise but has outperformed him in this World Cup comfortably. Things may change in coming matches but till now no, Gill has been a super flop.

Babar Azam's reign as the No.1 ODI batter in the world is over, with India young gun Shubman Gill claiming top spot from the Pakistan captain on the latest ICC Men's Batting Rankings.

These ranking are useless. Ranking should be based on impact on match rather than statpad. Both Rizwan and Fakhar are superior and impactful than Babar who is super flopped facing top players

Shubman is playing an aggressive inning today against Netharlands. May be he is flushing out his frustration of failed campaign till now. Going at a strike rate of 170 plus atm.

I am praising his approach bro. he is playing some wonderful shots today.

Here you go, brother. Gill has scored a 30-ball fifty against Netherlands today. This is his 3rd fifty in this World Cup.

Oh man. He was playing so nicely. I might have jinxed him. But he scored his 50 though.

He is struggling against left arm spinners,Santner will definitely own him in the semi-final.I hope I'm jinxing well :genius

Gill scored another 50 off just 41 balls against New Zealand today. Excellent innings so far from this young lad.

Onus is on him to finally win a match for Bharat in the World Cup

Shubman Gill is a terrific cricketer.
Have been watching him play in bits and pieces - don't think I've seen a player cut full deliveries as much as him especially for someone his height.

An outstanding talent who outshines all our youngsters. The only batsmen we have that can compete with Gill are Saim Ayub and Omair Yusuf

This was supposed to be his moment.

Kohli has now overtaken the semi final mania

Knew my boy would come good today. Just woke up and was confused why he didn't score a hundred. Wish he did

Needs to improve his fitness, in Asia Cup also he had cramps after long innings. Hope Kohli takes him under his wing, we all know how improved fitness helped Kohli reach his potential a few years after debut.

He hasn't had a great World Cup but he showed his class in the semi-final against New Zealand and he can surely have enough talent to do plenty of damage at the top against Australia in the FINAL.

After dengue he is not the same. He looks winded. I heard he lost like 6 or 7 kgs. It is quiet unfortunate. He was at peak of his powers when he entered the world cup.

Thats because Abdullah has been playing on pindi pitches. Gill would be the 2nd coming of Bradman on such pitches lol.

I've seen both play, Abdullah isn't even > Saud in test lol.
Abdullah Shafique’s record in Pakistan is not even that good - he averages 43. It’s his 160* and 201 in Sri Lanka that have people hopeful for him.

So far Gill has failed everywhere aside from Australia and Shafique has failed everywhere aside from Sri Lanka. To early to even compare the two in Test cricket but Gill is clearly more skilled.

Face of a guy who puts a lot of value for his wicket. Shubman gill fails in the big final against Australia in World Cup 2023 for just 4 runs of 7 balls.

He had a pretty avg or below avg WC from his standards, couldn't come good today. But still a top young player amongst his age group. Slightly ahead of Harry Brook and Abdullah Shafique, who are very good too.

Skill wise yes he's way better than Abdullah but that doesn't always bring you results.

He doesn't really look that solid. Any avg player would look great batting with Rohit and Kohli.

Let's see how he does being the main batter in the side with brittle unreliable batters to follow after him.

According to our beloved poster @Mamoon we were supposed to see the exchange of heir in this world cup from Kholi to Gill, while he was ridiculing Babar. Guess the shiny crown transfer went missing this world cup, especially when it mattered the most to win it for the nation. It feels nice to tag such posters to remind them of their comics

Both Kohli and Gill are better than Babar. Whether Gill can match Kohli or not remains to be seen. It will be very difficult though because Kohli’s mentality and work ethic are unparalleled.

Forget Gill, even KL and Iyer are better than Babar.

Not slightly ahead of Abdullah. He is well ahead.

Abdullah doesn’t even enter the equation but yes both Brook and Rachin are special too and so is Gill.

Gill vs Abdullah is as dumb as Kohli vs Babar.

On what basis. Passport?
Playing in his home conditions, his team is winning without his runs, no pressure for his runs, yet he returns a flop World Cup. He should be sacked asap because there is better talent in India like Kishan.

Oh here you're again. :D
How is popa kohli doing after another stunning defeat in the finals?

Coming to the topic now. Slightly ahead means slightly ahead. Although Abdullah had a better WC than Gill but Gill is a superior batsman, not by a huge margin. Skill wise, he is ahead no question about that but can't be said about their mental and tactical abilities.

Ravindra had a monsterous WC for sure but I would want to see him more. That is why didn't mention him, also Brook, Shafique and Gill are far ahead in their career in comparison to Ravindra regardless of their age.

Pakistani fans never learn.

Kohli vs Umar
Kohli vs Babar
Pandya vs Faheem
Bumrah vs Hassan Ali
Bumrah vs Shaheen
Bumrah vs Rauf
Kuldeep vs Shadab

And now Gill vs Abdullah

🤡🤡🤡🤡

Every single team Pakistani fans deluded themselves into thinking that their inferior player is better than the superior Indian counterpart and every single time they are left egged in the face.

It appears that they enjoy this humiliation and disappointment.

Gill had a good World Cup. Not as per the expectations but it was still good. Let’s not forget that he was down with dengue and dengue fever rattles you to the core.

It takes a good month for you to fully recover and Gill was rushed back because of the World Cup. In normal circumstances, he would only be resuming light training now.

It is clear that it impacted him and it also led to him cramping and tiring out. For example, he was set for a massive hundred against New Zealand in the semifinal but had to retire hurt because of the cramps that he was getting.

He has barely been fit for match play but he has still shown more than enough glimpses of his ability. The best batting talent to come out of Asia since Kohli and Babar is nowhere near him.

If you need to see more than conclude that Rachin is better Shafique you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about, but then again, what can you expect from someone who thinks Babar is better than Kohli.

Kohli is a phenomenal player with a lot of pride. He is player of the World Cup but I’m sure that means nothing to him right now.

Nonetheless, at 35, he still showed he is the real king unlike the fake king in his prime whose best performance in India was in a sherwani shop where he spent 8 lakh rupees.

So I get your reason for rating Indian players higher because they generally develop more and ultimately outshine their Pakistani counterparts. I get it. I understand some of the comparisons you mention were embarrassing.

I am not saying Gill is poor. I am not even comparing him to Abdullah or Babar.
All I said is hold your horses. Let him deliver on the big stage and then tout the horns.
Apart from the meaningless 80 in semi where he was riding on the back of others, he hasn’t done jack in the World Cup. The rest are all excuses.

Babar had more responsibility, pressure than Gill can imagine at his age, because Babar has been carrying the Pak team from the day he onboarded. Yet, he’s had several impactful innings in the world cups. Let Gill do that first, then let’s bring on the comparison.

Abdullah has already helped his team win an away test series in SL and led world cup’s Highest ODI chase. He too has achieved more. Remember Abullah is not surrounded by Kohli and Rohit. Pakistani guys are on their own.

We both agree that only Babar is genuine contender to Kohli and he too is falling behind now. I still believe that Babar is more natural than Virat just how I stated that Gill is more natural among these players but that doesn't matter. Mental Strength, Temperament, Tactical awareness play an important role. Another factor plays the most important role too and that is that Babar has no one to mentor him while Kohli is mentored by Sachin, MSD, Yuvi. Champions of Skill, Temperament and mental strength. Also Babar has to carry his team while Kohli's India side has been surrounded by match-winners. Whether it is Dhawan, Rohit MSD or Gill. Kohli is also more educated and intelligent than Babar, who comes from a very humble background or you'd say a paindu background. But that is debate for another day. I won't belittle Kohli just because I like Babar and I expect you to the same. For sure, Kohli is a king. :)

Also @Mamoon Rohit and Kohli are the best batters of their generation. They did enough in this World Cup. This loss in the final is down to poor display in the final by Gill, Iyer and specially the perennial chocker KL Rahul. The guy played the worse knock in a World Cup final ever. If it were Babar or Rizwan going at 62 SR, people would murder them.

He has a great potential but has not yet lived up to it. People bash Babar for stacking up runs in bilateral series but Shubman Gill is the absolute king of that. Also, aside from stacking up runs at home, he’s been a failure on the Test front too.

people talked crap about babar runs against weaker teams well gill is in the same category nothing special will score runs against weak bowlers

No we don’t “agree” Babar is the only genuine contender to Kohli. He isn’t even close and never was and never will be. Only delusional Babar fans think so.

India produces 3-4 batsmen like Babar every few years. He is nothing special and nor is he more naturally talented than Kohli. He hasn’t figured out a way to dominate spin and he has been playing since 2015. What natural talent?

The only genuine contender to Kohli is Gill but even that is a long shot because although the natural talent is there, the sheer determination, hard work and relentless desire to be the best has to come from him.

The only contemporary batsman with more ability than Kohli is Rohit and although he is a giant of the game in his own right, he couldn’t surpass Kohli because he doesn’t have the desperation to be the best. He hasn’t sacrificed and put in the hard yards that Kohli has.

The physical transformation and the way Kohli has worked his backside off to condition himself into the prime athlete that he is could have been done by Rohit too, but he chose not to.

Ultimately, Gill will have to choose his own path and decide how badly he wants to be the best. He can be if he chooses to be, but it has to come within himself. No one will hold his hand.

Don’t give me this rubbish that Kohli had mentors like Tendulkar, Dhoni etc. Dozens and dozens of batsmen have come through the ranks in their presence and there is only one Kohli.

Kohli is Kohli not because of the mentors but because of the gift he has from God and his own hard work and desire to be the best.

Shafique has achieved more? Where?

Gill’s 91 in the 5th Test in Australia on day 5 to help India seal a historic series win is bigger than Shafique’s entire career so far.

Also, you have no idea what you are talking about if you think Gill is under no pressure. Getting into the Indian team and keeping your place is a different level of pressure because the competition is insane.

The 30th best batsman in India is probably better than all of the top 5 Pakistani batsman. Babar has no pressure and neither did he have any pressure when he was young because his competition was with average batsmen so his place was under threat.

He failed in Tests for the first 2 years but his place was never under scrutiny. In India, Karun Nair was dropped forever only 4 Tests after scoring a 300 against Anderson and Broad.

Gill was backed to be India’s best batsman in this World Cup and someone like Kohli claimed a year ago that he wasn’t 10% as good as Gill at this age.

India have put a lot of burden and expectation on Gill’s shoulders so he definitely had a lot of pressure coming into the World Cup and on top of that, he had dengue which shook him badly as it would shake anyone.

Never ever compare Gill with Shafique again. There is no comparison.

Also @Mamoon Rohit and Kohli are the best batters of their generation. They did enough in this World Cup. A lot things contributed to India’s loss today. Unfair to pin all blame on Iyer and KL.

- Gill finding mid-on on a quite an innocuous delivery. It would have been dispatched for a boundary 9/10 times.

- Rohit didn’t need to charge Maxwell like a mad man after hitting him for a 6 and 4 already.

- Kohli dragging one onto his stumps. It was too close to his body to dab to the third man. Error of judgement.

- Iyer’s failure and KL’s knock that never gained any momentum.

- Head riding his luck in the first 10 overs. He was beaten a dozen times by Bumrah and Shami and would have nicked one off on another day.

All of these factors played an equal role in India’s demise today.

Yasir Shah has a hundred in Australia
Not while opening the innings with India needing to chase 320 runs on day 5 to win the series.

You can’t compare a fluke century by a tailender with nothing on the line to an innings like that.
