[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Is Shubman Gill the best young cricketer in the world today?

This guy is massively overrated.

Is he dating Sachins daughter? That might be the reason.

At best he’s just decent and a player of Raina calibre - or a second tier Indian batter category.

He’s not becoming another Kohli. That level is far above him.

Abdullah has looked much better batter than Gill at this World Cup even though he just made his debut.

Abdullah average 53, SR 93
Gill average 22, SR 87

Abdullah Already has an away double century in test cricket in SL and averages 50+ in test cricket whereas Gill has misfired in tests with a paltry average of 32.
Again, Pakistani fans don’t learn. It seems like they never will.

Gill will leave Babar in his dust. 5 years from today, Gill vs Babar will be as stupid as Kohli vs Babar and you are comparing him to Abdullah.

Gill took us to a memorable series win in Australia. He already has some knocks to his name where he was the single source of impact for the victory. Abdullah can't help in drawing a test match in Australia, leave alone win a clutch series.

I do think Abdullah has had a better WC than Gill so far.
Yes. I gave benefit of doubt for the first 2 games as he was coming back after Dengue. No excuse anymore. So far Rohit is covering. Hope he steps up in one match. If he survives 15 overs he can be destructive towards the end. He should give himself a chance.

I won't write him off yet. I always felt he is more a no.3 batsman. But with Kohli he cannot bat there. Hopefully he finds his form soon.

Babar And Rizz also have had better wc than This Gill guy.
They have but I wasn't commenting to boost Pakistani egos in a comparison. There was an ongoing convo about Abdullah and Gill.

Whilst it's fashionable to bash our players, Abdullah actually and factually has performed better so far.

I wouldn't write him off either but he's disappointed so far for his undeniable talent.

This is Abdullah's first proper season as an international batter in ODI's. Gill has already crossed 3 seasons. It's obvious some of Gill's flaws will have been figured out by now. Gill is partly to blame too for his poor shots but he will eventually come out in the end with a good inning during crucial stages.

Let Abdullah bat for another season. If he's still playing well after couple of seasons we shall decide. Personally, I already see a huge short ball problem for him. He seems very very uncomfortable.

Ravindra is a much bigger talent at display.
Travis Head is one heck of a talent too.
In India, I like Ishan Kishan more than Gill. He’s underrated.
Gill is rated since the days of under-19. Almost everyone is of the consensus best Indian under-19 talent ever since Dhawan. He showcased last few months. But he is a bit careless, lazy in this world cup. Percentage cricket he had is missing. He has very high cieling. SO i expect him to come back to form soon. So far his non-contribution has not hurt India. At some point he has to step up.

Ok. Let’s see. More games to go in this World Cup. He must show up.
Babar in 2019 scored 500+ runs.

2019 who didn't score. This time pitches are way trickier in different places. ALso he was struck by Dengue upfront. He looked weak in the first 2 games atleast.

Nobody cuts slack on Shaheen whether the dude has flu or injury. You shouldn’t be playing for your country if you’re not 100% fit. These are just excuses.
There is a technical gap. His head falls over when the ball swings back on a length, his front foot gets planted but the head falls over and creates a gap between bat and pad.
His shot selection can be improved on helpful pitches as well.

This is yet another excuse. This World Cup has been a run fest compared to 2019.

Not really. Look at the low scores as well not just high scores. In that world cup almost all of them were high scores except one game where i think Pakistan rolled over for 105 runs against Windies. Afghanistan defended totals, SL bowled ENgland out for 160 odd. Pakistan bowled out for 191.

I will worry about Gill only when he stat pads, tuk tuks and scores soft 50s. Otherwise i am okay with a slight dip in form.

Same here. Hope he makes up for this by scoring heavily in knockout games.

I understand. However, put another way the pressure was on Abdullah because he debuted in the World Cup and he had to hit the ground running. Pakistan had failed him by doing this to his career.
Gill got an almost perfect run and prep going into the World Cup. He had in form Rohit, Kohli. Team in full confidence and winning. Yet he’s crumbled under the pressure of expectations. He looks a million dollars and then throws it away with a poor shot.

I will worry about Gill only when he stat pads, tuk tuks and scores soft 50s. Otherwise i am okay with a slight dip in form.
This is a biased point. Rohit scored a slow 87. Is that stat padding? The team won so no one is talking about it. But boy if England smoked it down, Rohit would be on fire.
There is no excuses for throwing away your wicket

I think Shubman Gill is consistently playing too much on the back foot which causing him to struggle facing pitched up deliveries and most of the times he is getting delayed reactions in connecting with the ball.

Its just 3 or 4 games for Gill this WC and guys are all over him ! He's too good a player to not contribute..

Rohit playing after years is adopting this new approach. Gill has always been like this. He is someone who tries to attack every ball. It makes him more vulnerable. He will definitely work on it and come back stronger. It is just a temperament issue.

And that should be the approach. With odis dying anyway - more focus needs to be on t20 and attacking cricket and mindset..

Yes. Atleast in 2 matches he looked super fluent before finding the fielder. I don't worry about him. Iyer is the one who India needs to be worried about. He has literally filled his mind with bouncer bouncer expecting a bouncer every ball.

Think you are going to be proved wrong very soon. His skill levels are heads and shoulders above what we have seen at the WC so far. He will click the day other batters fail which is a good thing

True. Iyer is the weak link - tbh, how he gets into the playing XI instead of SKY continues to beat me. Rahul Dravid has this strange preference batsmen whom he thinks are technically correct - how Shreyas convinced RD that he has tech skills is a whole another matter

I think we anticipate Gill to go that level because of the batting talent india surfaces up. But let’s hold our horses.

Babar And Rizz also have had better wc than This Gill guy.
Lol Fan You Guy will realise there isa thing called strike rate Babar has 79 strike rate ,Rizwan definately played better than gill😂But Babar even bumrah did better batting than him in this wc

Abdullah Shafique is a proper opener Pakistan has been searching for all these years. Hope PCB/PCT invests in him.

The best young batting talent now is Rachin Ravindra. He will be a top-class player in the coming years. Shubman Gill is a good player, but I won't compare him with Rachin until Gill consistently makes tall and impactful scores.

A very mature post.
Gill is a wonderful talent. However, he is missing out an opportunity to launch himself on world stage. He still has many games to go so let’s see.

Two young guns Shubman and Siraj have been a disappointment so far. World cup pressure probably

Babar has scored 207 runs so far
While Gill has only scored 105 runs with even worse average.

Did Babar's even 1 fifty won you a single match ,Forget about match winning knock even they have substance of significance on outcome?😉 What's the use of than those ? If gill starts to playing like himself even he would've same amount of runs ,He came out of Dengue that leave impact on physical and metal health that's also a reason.

Wait for knockouts, I think by that time he will be fully recovered and he may step up! Even Pandya is crucial for knockouts...

Again, Pakistani fans don’t learn. It seems like they never will.

Gill will leave Babar in his dust. 5 years from today, Gill vs Babar will be as stupid as Kohli vs Babar and you are comparing him to Abdullah.
Why 5 years? I think you’re rating Babar way too high. He’s not that good.

In 3 years, Gill will surpass Babar.

Gill must not have been in any games vs Pak in the recent past in T20s/ODIs because I could've sworn I have never seen him play. I'd only seen his name on scorecards. But this last Asia Cup and now at the world cup I definitely have seen him bat. He's very easy on the eye - a free flowing stroke maker. Should have a bright future ahead of him! Seems like the sickness early in this tournament might still be affecting him - to be fair he probably should've been restd for more games until he was 100%.

One can only laugh at the comparison between Gill and Abdullah. As I said, Pakistani fans will never learn.

Pandya vs Faheem
Kohli vs U. Akmal
Kohli vs Babar
Rohit vs Fakhar
KL Rahul vs Imam
and now, Gill vs Abdullah

Gill is already better than Babar who is and always will be better than Abdullah. The reason why I said 5 years @ArabKnight is because for the next 4-5 years, delusional fans will keep making excuses that “let Gill play as many games as Babar” etc. so it will probably take 4-5 years for Gill to have the body of work that Babar has.

In terms of batting skill and natural agility, I will take Gill over Babar right now in all formats.

As far as Gill vs Abdullah is concerned, on paper, Abdullah is a year younger than him but that is comical. Everyone with a set of eyes and a functional brain can see that Abdullah is at least 3-4 years older if not more.

On paper, he is 23 but in reality he is at least 27-28 while Gill is a genuine 24 year old. Their pictures from 4-5 years back clarify everything.

Abdullah was not even close to being international material when he was actually Gill’s age and even today Gill is clear in every aspect of batting.

@Farabi mentioned that Abdullah is under more pressure but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Pressure comes from weight of expectations.

Gill has a lot of expectations on his shoulders. He has been earmarked as the next great Indian batsman and he was tipped by many Indian ex-players and journalists be the best batsman of this World Cup.

You can imagine the expectations and pressure on his shoulders when someone like Kohli claims that he wasn’t 10% the player that Gill is at this age.

Of course it is a gross exaggeration and it will be very difficult, if not impossible, for Gill to surpass his legacy but there is no doubt that will go down as an Indian batting great. Such high praise illustrates how much India expect and demand from him and how much pressure he is under to live up to the expectations.

On the contrary, Abdullah has no such expectations and hopes on his shoulders. No one saw him as a savior who will save Pakistan in the World Cup or uplift the team; he was just filling in for Fakhar who needed some time away from the team because he was completely out of sorts.

Furthermore, I can see that some Pakistani fans are praying and hoping that Gill fades away but I don’t think their prayers will be answered. Firstly, BCCI know how to protect its prized assets and secondly, Gill has a very strong support system.

His father is his biggest critic and extremely strict in terms of his cricketing career. He was criticizing his batting and highlighting his mistakes after he scored 208 vs New Zealand in an ODI in January.

Every young player needs a figure like that in his life to keep him on his toes because it is easy to get distracted by all the money and fame that comes your way especially when you are a bright young Indian cricketer in today’s era.

Gill with his IPL contract, multiple endorsement deals and BCCI contract, is already set for life at the age of 24 and it is easy for the fire to extinguish which is why you need someone to help you stay focused and Gill’s father will ensure that he doesn’t lose his way.

Short answer - no..outside flat pitches he is overrated. Can't play spin on turners nor can he play in swing in a swing friendly environment.

Look at his test batting apart from that innings vs Aussies. Floundering about.

@Mamoon

1. While it's true that some Pakistani players have been involved in age-related controversies in the past, it's important to recognize that age-related issues can differ from one player to another. Blanket assumptions should be avoided.

2. Comparing Abdullah and Gill in terms of talent or skills is challenging, as both lack sufficient historical data for a meaningful comparison. However, based on observable performance, Abdullah seems to be having a more impressive World Cup and demonstrating better composure under pressure. He seized an opportunity during a challenging period, with Fakhar (and Imam) also vying for a spot in the World Cup itself.

3. Handling pressure in international cricket is a universal challenge, whether a player is replacing someone or not. Abdullah faces significant expectations from fans, and being part of a World Cup squad is undeniably a high-pressure situation. Abdullah's introduction directly into the World Cup could have affected his performance, while Gill had a more stable position in the Indian team. The importance of adequate preparation for a major tournament cannot be understated. If what you’re saying is true, then why not chuck your best players from the domestic arena into the World Cups directly? Why prepare? It’s a ridiculously lame statement to make.

4. Babar Azam bears a substantial burden as the captain of the Pakistani team, which is deeply mediocre, and a top-order batsman. Unlike Gill, Babar lacks the luxury of a strong supporting cast like Rohit and Kohli, which adds additional pressure to his game. Gill faces comparatively less pressure, as even if he underperforms, it doesn't impact the Indian team as severely. In contrast, Babar's runs are often make-or-break for Pakistan, amplified by negativity from ex-cricketers, the media, demanding fans, and a comical PCB.

5. It's indeed premature to compare Gill to the likes of Babar or Kohli. Gill's potential is uncertain, and only his actual performance over time will determine his legacy. Kohli's propensity for hyperbole should be considered, and historical examples like the praise for Amir's bowling being “the best in the world” highlight the need for caution in such comparisons.

6. The support system can be a pivotal factor in a player's career, whether it's Gill benefiting from his father's guidance or another player having a mentor figure. The uniqueness of each player's journey should be acknowledged. As per Babar, his father has played a similar role in his journey FYI.

He has disappointed me so far in this world cup . Need to play sensible at the start of innings .
India needs inform gill at the knockout Stages.

He has been very underwhelming in this tournament. May be the big stage got him. May he was rushed in. We will never know. He doesn’t look like the batsman he was at the beginning of the year.

Very good points and very well articulated. Your took is very well balanced

If anything he is over-confident. Coming down the wicket every other ball. He has to bide his time as Rohit is taking care of all the quick scoring.

Has another chance to shine today. A player of his quality is surely in line for a meaningful knock after a quiet tournament thus far.

People deal with stress in various ways. May be being ultra aggressive or overconfident is his way. He clearly has not looked in full flow mode. His best innings was the short one played against Pakistan

Gill gets a lucky break. He may be joining Rohit soon if he doesn’t apply himself better

Another 50 for Shubman Gill this year off just 55 balls against Sri Lanka. Most fifties this year.

Most 50+ scores in ODIs this year
12 - Shubman Gill*
11- Pathum Nissanka
11 - Babar Azam
10- Rohit Sharma
10 - Virat Kohli

SL has no bowlers.

Remember RIZWAN too piled up a ton of runs against them and Pak chased 340+ against them.

Don’t take performances against them seriously.

The World Cup has shown some chinks and some improvements, even in terms of temperament. So not yet.
But I expect him to get there in couple of years and reel off some classic Test Match centuries.

No batter in India can be considered great unless he hits at least 10 memorable Centuries overseas. That is the bar for Bharat.

okay That bowling attack consisted of 20 year olds. This is definitely a better attack. They did bowl England out for 160

Just looks classy.
Yup. High ceiling.
Substantial innings today. The power game and variety of stroke play is there. Good strike rotation.
The defense against swing/swing is a bit vulnerable and something this guy can develop over time if he wants to become a solid test bat as well

Also, Gill hardly has any pressure.
Whether he scores or not, their team will still win.
He started Tuk tuk style today to get back in form. Kohli led the charge and played out the early overs of seam/swing to protect him. He’s lucky to play in the shadows of GOATs like Rohit and Kohli who can easily carry the team and him

Exactly, Gill is lucky to be playing in a strong batting unit. His mental strength is not tested except on a couple of occasions. I still believe he should be batting at No. 3.

He is a massive player to have in the last 10 overs. He can strike the ball at will. He still has to work on picking up slower ones.

w

why not? Abdullah is a bit ahead atm due to his Test match knocks
No offense to Abdullah, but I don't think Abdullah's putting a test knock as good as what Gill put up in the Gabba test anytime soon. Also, the entire series in general.. Gill was very good and got us a 2nd straight series win in Aus soil. Abdullah needs to prove himself on atleast one of the SENA shores before we can start any serious comparisons. I don't take in the scores on Pakistani test pitches. They're cement graveyards for bowlers. Getting runs in SENA and Indian rank turners are a different proposition.

Abdullah before the started started was my d

in tests Abdullah is better.
Gill has scored a crucial innings of 90+ in australia ar Gabba where India went on to win the series. What has Abdullah achieved in tests so far? Lets see how Abdullah does in december when PAK tours AUS then we compare. As of now Gill is miles ahead in all 3 formats.

I rate him very highly but with all the hype around here for him, I think he has flopped so far in WC, averaging a bit above 35 in this WC. Indian fans can't be happy with this effort so far?

Babar Azam has similar average in the WC and he has been bashed daily (And this bashing is in addition to his captaincy being very poor)

There’s no denying that Shubman Gill has talent.

But Umar Akmal, Umar Amin also had talent.

So far he has failed to transform that talent into performances particularly at the big stage of this World Cup. Contrast with Ravindra.

However there’s a chance he might come good in the semifinal or final.

If Gill doesn’t perform even there then a series of bilaterals are ahead where he’ll likely bash teams like PAK batters do.

Then wait for the next World Cup.

There’s no denying that Shubman Gill has talent.

India should replace Gill with Ishan Kishan.
Ishan Kishan looks much more clutch and he will also provide the left right combination.

The guy is a ultimate flat track bully
Nothing wrong in being a flat track bully. So is Fakhar, Warner and Maxwell.

Most pitches today are flat, specially in ICC tournaments.

Rohit Sharma has made a career out of being FTB.

None of our players are even flat track bullies except Fakhar Zaman.

Nope … Ishan is nowhere close to Gill..
Based on bilateral bullying? At the end of the day, results need to shout.
World Cup is the place where every team fields their A team. You’re at home, you have no pressure for runs because the team is winning anyway and pressure is on Kohli/Rohit, yet you are failing again and again. Babar, for all his weaknesses and issues, nailed the first World Cup and scored 478 runs in England, which was the highest for any youngster playing their first World Cup.

India right now is a stronger bowling unit than batting unit. This is one the top 2 or 3 bowling unit I’ve seen from Asia ever. The batting is world class but if I compared this batting with India’s in 2011, then there is no comparison (Sachin, Sehwag, Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Raina, Gambhir). There is no weak link. This 2023 batting is still reliant on Rohit and Kohli, the rest are not at the same level. Pandya is also injured so it puts more pressure on top 6.
India should very quickly think about making this change because the KO is coming.
