One can only laugh at the comparison between Gill and Abdullah. As I said, Pakistani fans will never learn.
Pandya vs Faheem
Kohli vs U. Akmal
Kohli vs Babar
Rohit vs Fakhar
KL Rahul vs Imam
and now, Gill vs Abdullah
Gill is already better than Babar who is and always will be better than Abdullah. The reason why I said 5 years
@ArabKnight is because for the next 4-5 years, delusional fans will keep making excuses that “let Gill play as many games as Babar” etc. so it will probably take 4-5 years for Gill to have the body of work that Babar has.
In terms of batting skill and natural agility, I will take Gill over Babar right now in all formats.
As far as Gill vs Abdullah is concerned, on paper, Abdullah is a year younger than him but that is comical. Everyone with a set of eyes and a functional brain can see that Abdullah is at least 3-4 years older if not more.
On paper, he is 23 but in reality he is at least 27-28 while Gill is a genuine 24 year old. Their pictures from 4-5 years back clarify everything.
Abdullah was not even close to being international material when he was actually Gill’s age and even today Gill is clear in every aspect of batting.
@Farabi mentioned that Abdullah is under more pressure but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Pressure comes from weight of expectations.
Gill has a lot of expectations on his shoulders. He has been earmarked as the next great Indian batsman and he was tipped by many Indian ex-players and journalists be the best batsman of this World Cup.
You can imagine the expectations and pressure on his shoulders when someone like Kohli claims that he wasn’t 10% the player that Gill is at this age.
Of course it is a gross exaggeration and it will be very difficult, if not impossible, for Gill to surpass his legacy but there is no doubt that will go down as an Indian batting great. Such high praise illustrates how much India expect and demand from him and how much pressure he is under to live up to the expectations.
On the contrary, Abdullah has no such expectations and hopes on his shoulders. No one saw him as a savior who will save Pakistan in the World Cup or uplift the team; he was just filling in for Fakhar who needed some time away from the team because he was completely out of sorts.
Furthermore, I can see that some Pakistani fans are praying and hoping that Gill fades away but I don’t think their prayers will be answered. Firstly, BCCI know how to protect its prized assets and secondly, Gill has a very strong support system.
His father is his biggest critic and extremely strict in terms of his cricketing career. He was criticizing his batting and highlighting his mistakes after he scored 208 vs New Zealand in an ODI in January.
Every young player needs a figure like that in his life to keep him on his toes because it is easy to get distracted by all the money and fame that comes your way especially when you are a bright young Indian cricketer in today’s era.
Gill with his IPL contract, multiple endorsement deals and BCCI contract, is already set for life at the age of 24 and it is easy for the fire to extinguish which is why you need someone to help you stay focused and Gill’s father will ensure that he doesn’t lose his way.
