Liam Livingstone, a punishing middle-order batter and a wicket-taking spinner, along with Wahab Riaz (both Platinum), Haider Ali, Sherfane Rutherford, Shoaib Malik (all Diamond), Saqib Mahmood (Gold, Brand Ambassador) and Tom Kohler-Cadmore (Silver) will be in yellow for 2017 champions Peshawar Zalmi. Hussain Talat has been traded from Islamabad United, completing Zalmi’s retention of eight players. In return for bringing Hussain Talat in Gold, Zalmi have given their Silver second round pick to United.

I hope they play Mohammad Haris as a WK over Kami.

Kami's form last season should have brought the end of him of his career but clearly his "experience" is invaluable.

Heard Kamran Akmal has withdrawn from the PSL under protest for being demoted in the silver category

A tricky squad to assemble

1. Hazrat Zazai (F)
2. Haider Ali
3. Hussain Talat
4. Mohammad Haris (WK)
5. Liam Livingstone (F)
6. Sherfane Rutherford (F)
7. Shoaib Malik
8. Wahab Riaz (C)
9. Saqib Mahmood (F)
10. Usman Qadir
11. Mohammad Amir Khan (E)

This is possibly the best line-up I could put up but would like to see the Ben Cutting, Arshad Iqbal and Sameen Gul all play.

Zazai
Haris
Cadmore
Haider
Malik
Rutherford
Livingstone
Wahab
Qadir
Sirajudin
Sameen

Zazai F
Harris WK
Haider Ali
Malik
Livingston F

Wahab

Saqib Mahmood F
Arshad Iqbal
Amir Khan E

1. Zazai
2. Tom Kohler
3. Haider Ali
4. Talat
5. Malik
6. Livingston
7. Harris
8. Wahab Riaz
9. Saqib Mehmood
10. Usman Qadir
11. Amir Khan

Another squad where the first XI looks good, but scratch under the surface and the bench strength isn't great.

Zazai
Haider
Talat
Malik
Livingstone
Rutherford
Haris
Wahab
Usman Qadir
Saqib
Amir Khan

Hope Akmal manages to leave the team and young Harris will be playing and performing as WK batsman.

Peshawar Zalmi should have picked Asif Afridi (SLAO) while he was available in the draft.

Picking only one spinner that too Usman Qadir who blows hot and cold can prove to be their weakest front. Zalmi have always struggled in their spin bowling department they should have drafted in a second spinner just incase Usman isn't able to get wickets in the league.

Silver Lining:-
If Kamran Akmal withdraws from the league they should get in Zahid Mehmood as his replacement. A silver category for an experienced leg spinner can be a good move in the long run. This would lead them to be over dependent on the young Md Haris, so be it.

Maybe they are planning to use Shoaib Malik for a couple of overs per match as Qadir's cover.

Yes lacking a back up frontline spinner as Usman Qadir is the only specialist spinner. Malik, Livingstone can chip in a few but, PZ should have had another specialist spinner in the squad imo.

Mohammad Haris has been selected as emerging player (In supplementary category) if I am not wrong which opens up the third seamer option for them where they can fit anyone of their choice.

Should make the Semi Final with or without Akmal.Blend of experience and youth.

Surprising Sohail Khan managed to squeeze in but probably fill in for Umaid who’s left for KK.

With Wahab as Captain and Amir as Emerging will most likely play. If Cutting is selected as foreign player than Iqbal, Sameen and Sohail will most likely fight for the final spot.

Peshawar Zalmi has replaced fast bowler Amir Khan with Aarish Khan.

Amir khan is out of the tournament due to injury.

Good Decision by the management to pick a spinner instead of a fast bowler.

PSL 7 Preview : Peshawar Zalmi – Wahab Riaz’s side looks for an elusive 2nd PSL title in 2022

Many thanks to Titan24 for this write up.

Wahab-1.jpg

One of the most successful franchises in PSL’s history has been Peshawar Zalmi. From marketing, brand imaging to producing quality emerging players Zalmi have experienced it all in the 6 editions of PSL.

However, with the retirement of Darren Sammy as the player and captain there has undoubtedly been a void which despite decent effort from Wahab who is the current captain is yet to be fully filled. Zalmi did finish as runners up in the 2021 PSL edition which does show how strong their team base and culture in the group is.

One of the critical points regarding player retentions in Zalmi’s PSL history came in 2020 when Hassan Ali who has been the best emerging player coming out of Peshawar Zalmi left the franchise. Zalmi gave him the opportunity in the very first edition of PSL and he was a huge part of the franchise since however, him going into the platinum category in the draft in 2020 pushed Peshawar Zalmi to release him which was a move that many of the Zalmi fans still remember.

Hassan, who is now part of Islamabad United, was not only their best pacer after Wahab Riaz but, also a potential young leader who showed a lot of leadership capabilities while leading the struggling Central Punjab team in the 2020 season to their title defense in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy when they shared the trophy with KPK.

Despite all that, Zalmi has a team atmosphere which has seen many youngsters thrive alongside the experience of Mohammad Akram as team director as well as two World T20 trophies winning captain as their Head Coach Darren Sammy.

Young dynamic batsman in the form of Haider Ali and experience of Shoaib Malik provide good local batting talent to Zalmi. Add to that the batting firepower which Liam Livingstone can provide when he joins alongside Tom-Kohler Cadmore and partners with the irreplaceable Sherfane Rutherford.

The bowling attack will be led by their captain Wahab Riaz who is supported by Saqib Mahmood who might have to miss initial few games. In any case, Zalmi have added a lot of young local pacers in their squad to back up their main pacers with the likes of Sohail Khan coming in to their squad as well. Spin bowling will have to be led by Usman Qadir who only has two other young spinners in Mark Parkinson and Aarish Khan to support him if and when required who were both added during the replacement and supplementary drafts.

Whilst Zalmi has quality in both batting and bowling department, one area leaves a lot to be desired and that is having quality all-rounders. The only all-rounders Zalmi have are batting types in Malik and Livingstone. So, considering the lack of batting depth Wahab might well be expected to contribute something with the bat as well.

Key players: Wahab Riaz, Haider Ali, Shoaib Malik, Liam Livingstone, Sherfane Rutherford

Strength: Flexibility and power in batting

Weakness: Weak batting depth and lack of all-round options

Full Squad:

Wahab Riaz, Liam Livingstone, Shoaib Malik, Sherfane Rutherford, Haider Ali, Saqib Mahmood, Hussain Talat, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Hazratullah Zazai, Usman Qadir, Salman Irshad, Arshad Iqbal, Sameen Gul, Kamran Akmal, Sirajuddin, Mohammad Amir Khan, Ben Cutting, Mohammad Haris

Supplementary round: Mohammad Umer, Sohail Khan

Partial replacements: Matt Parkinson, Pat Brown

• Imam-ul-Haq and Ammad Butt from the reserve pool of players were allowed to join Peshawar Zalmi as partial preplacement for Arshad Iqbal and Kamran Akmal, who had tested positive on 21 and 22 January, respectively

Ben Cutting arrives.

James Foster Peshawar Zalmi has been appointed head coach for PSL 7.
James Foster has previously been associated with Zalmai for two years as an assistant coach

Hashim Amla will be the batting coach of Peshawar Zalmi for PSL 7

Mohammad Akram will be the team director and bowling coach.

Darren Sammy is not available in the first round of the league due to his busy schedule.

Wahab Riaz will not be available for Zalmi's tournament opener against Quetta tomorrow - he is in isolation due to testing covid positive.

Shoaib Malik will captain the side tomorrow.

They look like a team that needs a bit of a shake-up and wake-up.

Badly need Saqib Mahmood firing on all cylinders and Livingstone joining the squad (hopefully).

Tom Kohler Cadmore out of PSL due to injury, while Sherfane Rutherford is out of the league due to personal commitments. Both the players have left for home.

England batting all-rounder Benny Howell has joined Peshawar Zalmi as a substitute.

Sherfane Rutherford another player withdrawing due to 'personal commitments'...

It's becoming awful and frustrating now. Definitely, punishment should be made for these false excuses. Perhaps, on the contract, there should be some term that players shouldn't be able to pull out of the PSL so easily.

The thing to admire about Zalmis this season is their strong contingent of local players. They have stepped up big time this season with the likes of Haris and Salman Irshad carrying their team with Bat and Ball respectively. They have a good bench as well when you consider that Haider is not a regular right now in the playing 11.

you can only punish if you can find proof - what the pcb should have inrodiced from the start is to only pay the players when they have fully commited thr contract agreeement and if any players goes home earlier than the initial 10 games then dont pay the full contract

Presser happening from PZ

It's a good PR stunt but tbh its a waste of time. The chance of missing some great talent in the UK is next to nil. Most of the guys that turn up love cricket and play in leagues like Bham, Bradford and Lancs. They are good club cricketers but they aren't the uncut diamonds. I know 2 guys that went down to Bristol, one is a pace bowler and he bowls around 70mph and the other is in late 20s and bowls at 72mph.

Gloucestershire Cricket welcomed Peshawar Zalmi and around 80 ambitious young cricketers from in and around Bristol yesterday as part of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) side’s UK Talent Hunt.

Led by former Glos player and now Director of Cricket at Peshawar Zalmi, Mohammad Akram, the PSL team have been searching far and wide across the UK to find talented young players who could one day fulfil their dreams of making it as a pro cricketer.

Pakistan national team legend, Inzamam-ul-Haq, attended the Talent Hunt session at Gloucestershire’s Seat Unique Stadium in the hope of spotting a young player with raw talent. The 52-year-old made 120 Test and 378 ODI appearances for Pakistan, scoring more than 19,000 runs in the process.

The Peshawar Zalmi scouting team have held similar sessions in Luton, Bradford, Birmingham, Newport in Wales and more, and will venture into Europe in the coming weeks. The aim for the Peshawar Zalmi hierarchy is to assemble a team of 16 young players from the UK and give the hopefuls the chance to prove their abilities and potentially play in Pakistan domestic cricket.

Speaking at the Seat Unique Stadium, Mohammad Akram said: “We’re here to create more opportunities for youngsters, that’s the whole idea, to open more doors for youngsters in franchise cricket.

“To do that we’re visiting eight cities in England and Wales, and are looking to compile a team of 16 which can go and compete in Pakistan domestic cricket. Four of those who are selected will be a part of the Zalmi dressing room in the PSL, so it is a good opportunity for them to rub shoulders with some superstars.

“We’re very excited with the talent we've seen and it’s great to see a mix of communities all coming together.”

During the visit to the Seat Unique Stadium, Mohammad met with Gloucestershire Chairman David Jones and Chief Executive, Will Brown, to discuss how the two clubs can work closely together in the future to develop talent in both Pakistan and Bristol.

Will Brown, Chief Executive at Glos Cricket, said: "It was brilliant to be able to support Mohammad, Inzamam and all of the team at Peshawar Zalmi as part of their UK talent hunt.

"It is an excellent idea introduced to us by our board member, Dr Adeela ahmed Shaafi, that brought a whole new group of talented players to the stadium giving them an incredible opportunity to play at a world-class venue and potentially put themselves on the road to a professional contract. We are very excited to be working with Peshawar Zalmi and hope this is very much the start of a long and meaningful relationship.”
