[PICTURES/VIDEOS] PSL should go head to head with IPL

Well here we go…

The PCB has proposed a spate of radical changes to the PSL which, if approved, could include:
  • Shifting the league from next season to an April-May window which would mean it clashes directly with the IPL, in a bid, officials say, to "co-exist" with the IPL rather than "compete" with it.
  • Extra money for franchises to sign a marquee player outside the salary cap, including the possibility of a USD300,000-plus contract.
  • Play-offs to be played at a neutral venue, with the UK as an option
The plans are at a proposal stage at the moment with a decision to be taken only later in May at a governing council meeting between the board and franchises.

They come as the PSL tries to move away from the crowded December-February window in which it operates currently where it clashes not only with four other T20 leagues, but also a busy international cricket calendar.

USD 300k is not going to attract big names. It could entice an IPL reject tho.

As much as I'd go and see a PSL game in the UK shifting the PSL playoffs here would mark the beginning of the end for the league.

I am not sure what the rationale is to shift playoff games overseas? Will the final still be in Pakistan?

Rather than playing playoffs in UK, play preseason friendlies there.

There lot of people in UK that would love a PZ vs LQ friendly match at lords. In late March.

Bobby B vs The Eagle!

Ultimate showdown!

Why would PC want to shift the playoff in UK. That would be a disastrous thing to do considering Rawalpindini was houseful. Might as well arrange all playoff games there. Moving games out of Pakistan is not going to do well for the cricket in general.

Just imagining the stuff the BCCI and the IPL franchise or other Indian corporate giants could indulge in out of their hatred for Pakistan

- Pay top dollar to unsold players in the IPL or the top players in the world to join the IPL dugouts even if they weren't selected to play in the IPL

- Shift the ILT20, SAT20 to the IPL window where the unsold Foreign players get picked to participate in those leagues at the same time

- Buy out teams from the County T20 blast and get them to buy the unsold foreign players in the IPL

- Offer the unsold foreign players in the IPL lucrative commentary, expert analysis gigs in India

- BCCI announces any unsold foreign players in the IPL who decide to participate in a competing T20 league during the IPL season will be barred from future IPL auctions and from participating in the Indian Cricketing eco system

PCB has to be blind and dumb to assume the BCCI, IPL franchises and the country of India as a whole will sit back and let the PSL coexist with the IPL.

So what though. You are missing my point, the PSL is a PK league with a PK following. If the BCCI do these things, it would be a massive feather in the cap of the PSL. I would say bring it on.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has lamented the lack of progress of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) compared with other leagues, he said:

“India, just like their film industry, developed a cricket industry. We treat cricket as a hobby that’s why we couldn’t turn it into a business. PSL is still there from where it had started. The highest salary cap is $140,000. Why can’t they push it further? Why can’t we have players like Mitchell Starc or Pat Cummins? Because we do not have the money so there is no business,”

“It’s not that India became a reckoning force in world cricket recently, after the World Cup. Go back to 2007, 2011, 2015. They have gained so much knowledge from the foreign coaches and at the same time, they are working at the grassroots level without being noticed,”

“And then IPL came into play. And now, they have all the best minds with them. They have Ponting with DC, Hussey, and Bravo.”

“People who conceptualised PSL were thrown out within a year. They had a vision to expand it but it never happened. BPL has more foreign players than PSL. Moeen Ali is there, and so is David Miller, just because they have the money. We couldn’t progress,”

Rashid is correct. The current PSL owners are too scared to expand because they’ll end up with less in their minds but fail to grasp the concept that if the league grows, so will revenue and they will come out better off.

Babar Azam and Rizwan’s S/R’s should go head to head with the top IPL openers, seeing they are the best Pakistan have……

I will tell you why this is a bad idea. PSL has 6 teams and IPL has 10 teams. IPL goes on for an average of about 6 weeks. A 6 team tournament like PSL should be held for maximum 2-3 weeks. If you extend it to 6 weeks it will even further kill the interest.

Now there is a mid-season in the IPL where there is some dip before it picks up again before the playoffs, what is the upsell for the broadcaster of having another league with all due respect with much less star power in this time-frame.

English cricket to clamp down on players’ franchise league involvement

Exclusive: ECB aims to protect domestic game as players use county facilities all year then take overseas gigs – but IPL will remain exempt

I fell down laughing. This is just nonsense. Muscle flexing the smaller leagues. At the same time bowing down to the IPL and adhering to the new IPL policy.

Well, the English players can breathe easy now. Their IPL contracts are secure.

Also they want IPL owners to take part in the 100.

We need 4 weeks but anything more and you fall into the IPL trap of no one knowing or caring who plays who until the final.

With PCB struggling to find a broadcaster for their international games, they will definitely be considering 8 teams and 6 weeks.

Local fan base or dedicated PSL fan base will watch PSL even if it is IPl season or not.

The first 2 weeks and the last week of the IPL is when enthusiasm at its peak. Big budget Indian movies are apprehensive to release movies during this time period.

Now there are a few weeks in between when people do get a little fatigued about cricket. Now in that time frame offering a more inferior alternative to IPL is not exactly a great idea. Why would someone a little fatigued from IPL tune into watch PSL lol.

one of the dumbest business ideas. Only thing that might work is if an IPL match gets rained out people might look for cricket elsewhere but that’s not going to happen every time.

Why do we need the IPL audience, we have a large audience of PKs.

Why do we need the IPL audience, we have a large audience of PKs.
Then having PSL should work anytime. That same audience will be there today or tomorrow. Why would someone compete with the biggest league in the world and put themselves of losing some causal audience?. I have 0 problems but trying to understand your logic? Explain to me in simple terms why this is a good idea?

But more players are available at that time and the competition will do us good. It will force the PSL to improve it's product and that can only be good. We don't lose anything in the direct head to head. We will watch the PSL( not that I watch that much of it) and you will IPL.

For what? The PSL is self sufficient. The head to head would be great for the PSL as it has nothing to lose

PSL is self sufficient yet PSL franchisees were complaining about losses?

Such is the condition that PCB has to give up 90 per cent of the revenues to the franchisees.

It's usual business tactics to gain more.

PSL revenues are not in 100s of millions. The broadcast deal is worth 13mn and entire revenue pool is not even 20mn.

Even with 90 per cent revenue share franchisees probably get 2-3mn a season max.

They have to pay players and entire team cost plus franchisee fees. They also share cost of hosting.

This is no tactics, this is the truth. PSL franchisees make nothing.

It's doing OK. You worry about the dross the IPL served up last year. We like it and that's all that matters.

Don't understand why Indian fans are so worried about PSL happening at the same time as IPL. How does it matter ?

Its their league, their choice , their baby to deal with

Some say the losses to PSL has to more with surrogate betting companies not being allowed anymore and that's why the board doesn't like Rizwan

That's what I don't understand. Do you think the 2 going head to head will show up the dross of the IPL after paying millions in big salaries.

Except pakistanis, almost every other star player plays the IPL.

Again, you are claiming its doing ok while franchisees are claiming losses.

I don't have a problem. But rest assured once a foreigner quits PSL to join IPL as a injury replacement, the whining here will be immeasurable.

@Bewal Express ECB are thinking of no longer allowing English players to play leagues(except IPL) during the summer.

So no English players in PSL very likely if this goes ahead.

I doubt it'll happen. It can happen for PSL but under no circumstances can it happen for big bash league. England players need aussie soil experience regardless of formats.

BBL doesn't happen during the English domestic season. IPL and potentially PSL will.

Ik, I'm saying Ecb won't stop big bash league or any opportunity to play in aus irrespective of the format, league, international or whatever really and vice versa for aus with eng.

Psl however I can see ecb pulling out in a heartbeat.

Psl offers nothing to them that IPL doesn't already

We didn't have many and the ones that will play will no longer play FC. It's going to have a minimal impact and if they prevent others, the law is very strict on this area

Even Pakistan board knows that wud happen. Forget injury - some players skipped PSL games just to attend that Ambani wedding

But let their board go ahead. If it does not work out - they will again go back to Feb - March window !

Sometimes you need to let people burn their fingers to learn some hard life lessons !

Been plenty of English players who signed a contract in the last couple of seasons and we're still active in FC cricket.

Vince, Brook, Dawson, Fuller, Atkinson, Rossington, Jacks, Lammonby, Thompson, Parkinson, Lawrence, Wood, Duckett etc.

All T20 leagues including PSL should go head to head with IPL. Same window as IPL.

This is essential for reducing BCCI's dominance in world cricket (in the long run).

PSL is not as big of a brand as IPL is. Money talks in IPL so players will prefer IPL over PSL for sure.

It is the perfect time to hold PSL.

Benefits :-

* Not much bilateral cricket happens during IPL
* IPL is big in money but still 8 teams cannot absorb all the international talent of the world hence a lot of players who wouldn’t get picked in the IPL would be available to play PSL
and would be motivated to do well there to have a shot at the next year’s IPL

PSL will do better playing 2nd fiddle baby brother league to IPL.

The following foreign players have gone on unsold in the IPL.

Can the PSL successfully target them to play in the PSL? Can these players significantly boost PSL's profile and are they better than the existing foreign stock in the PSL?

Kane Williamson (New Zealand), base price of ₹2 crore, remains unsold.

Glenn Phillips (New Zealand), base price of ₹2 crore, remains unsold.

Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand), base price of ₹2 crore, remains unsold.

Shai Hope (West Indies), base price of ₹1.25 crore, remains unsold.

Alex Carey (Australia), base price of ₹1 crore, remains unsold.

Donovan Ferreira (South Africa), base price of 75 lakh, remains unsold.
Mujeeb ur Rahman (Afghanistan), base price of ₹2 crore, remains unsold.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth (Sri Lanka), base price of ₹75 lakh, remains unsold.

Akeal Hosein (West Indies), base price of ₹1.5 crore, remains unsold.

Adil Rashid (England), base price of ₹2 crore, remains unsold.

Keshav Maharaj (South Africa), base price of ₹75 lakh, remains unsold.

Finn Allen (New Zealand), base price of ₹2 crore, remains unsold.

Dewald Brevis (South Africa), base price of ₹75 lakh, remains unsold.

Ben Duckett (England), base price of ₹2 crore, remains unsold.

Moeen Ali (England), base price of ₹2 crore, remains unsold.

Josh Philipe (Australia), base price of ₹75 lakh, remains unsold.

Mustafizur Rahman (Bangladesh), base price of ₹2 crore, remains unsold.

If PCB can't attract these players, they should give up.

Williamson and Smith would be great additions to the PSL.

Yes lets start with third grade level BPL. :kp
Third grade is the appropriate grade level considering the overseas player quality and abysmal domestic quality of players participating in that league. Someone like Nitesh Reddy participating in that league will double the quality overnight. I have never seen a sporting team which is as poor in skills and athleticism as BD. They all look like comedians on the field

Moeen Ali is sold to KKR in an unsold auction segment.

Wait till the Auction is over.

Moreover lets not forget if a players get injured in IPL. Their replacement will directly fly from Pakistan to Dubai to India

PSL Franchises will have to make that compromise.

IPL has already tried to hit the PSL further by announcing any foreign player who leaves the IPL midway will be banned from the IPL auction for 2 years. The ECB has already announced that they will bar English players from playing in any T-20 leagues apart from the IPL during the English County season. PSL doesn't have many cards to play with.

PSL franchises will be looking to survive right now. There's no hope unless the country improves.

Go collosion course with IPL and sunk in whatever is left, TRPs will get a hit for PSL if clashed with IPL.

Also it will be a miracle if PSL signs half the players who went unsold in Ipl auction

If we go by the figure of $130,000 - $170,000 for top category players in PSL Draft in the past season/s.

Warner had base price of 2 Cr INR ($237,000) and he went unsold. Alongside many other players.

It all depends on the players. They missed out on IPL. Now do they want to potentially participate in PSL where they'll get a little more than half of the money they at least wanted from IPL. Mind you IPL is a 3 months tournament as compared to PSL which is 1 month tournament.

All good players are literally sold now and couple of them of even came earlier now will also not come. Now best bet is to Steve Smith, kane williamson and Joe root. At least they are big names.

Steve Smith
David Warner
Kane Williamson
Daryl Mitchell
Jonny Bairstow
Keshav Maharaj
Adil Rashid
Finn Allen
Mustafizur Rehman
Ben Duckett
Naveen-ul-Haq
Mujeeb Ur Rehman
Sikander Raza
Kyle Mayers
Matthew Short
Michael Bracewell
Ottneil Baartman
Will O'Rourke
Gus Atkinson
Dwaine Pretorius
Chris Jordan

Plenty of big names in there that could elevate the quality of this league and would be available for the full-season. Besides Warner, all of them are active cricketers.

It depends on how the PCB approaches them and whether they have accepted that they are a subsidiary to the IPL. Play in the PSL, if you do well and someone gets injured in the IPL, they might call you over as a replacement especially since you are active and are playing well in the PSL.

damn, this is gonna look so good for PSL if these players are not picked in the IPL.

In addition to the names mentioned above , there are plenty of options for PSL.

Pakistani batters are extremely limited and many can't even score fast against off spin. 95% can't play bounce .

Likes of Roston Chase and Blessing Muzarabani should be premium picks in PSL.

Then there are the likes of Netravalkar and Kenjige as well

PSL should absolutely go ahead with the plans and have the league same time as IPL.

There are plenty of overseas talent. IPL mostly give big bucks to their own players. Overseas hardly get that much.

Absolutely. We offer them a springboard to IPL contracts and then use them as a springboard to improve the league. A league with Ducket, Bairstowe, Warner, Adil Rashid, Mujeeb and Akeal will definitely improve. And this is not including the NZ and SL players.

Don't think any of these guys are particularly good T20 cricketers. If you want your league to have a high standard then you should be looking for the best players.

Am reading that Warner, Smith will be working in india as Commentators, Analysts during the IPL. They are probably making more as Commentators, Analysts in comparison to what the PSL can afford to pay them.

Yup there are too much roles in IPL these days.

They will get contract for IPL commentators. Definitely Warner and Smith are not going to Play in PSL .

IPL auction has left good choices for PSl franchises. Seeing some good players not being selected for IPL. PSL should target them now.

Yeah I will take unknown guys over oldies like Colin munro, alex hales, rilee rossouw. Don't forget Liam livingstone, Tim david and Harry brook all are first unknown signees in psl.

I've always maintained that PSL has actually been better at unearthing foreign talent than local talent. Dawid Malan was another virtual unknown before PSL. Point is, there is plenty of top-quality T20 talent out there if you do your scouting. Big names are important for attracting eye-balls, but so are guys that can help win you matches.

PCB has way too much ego to take the scraps left off by IPL.
What ego? Even if IPL is not taking place at same time, still the top talent wouldn't have come but now you are getting some decent active names like Ben duckket, jonny bairstow, Sean abbot, lance Morris, alzarri Joseph etc. Where was their ego last year when 40 year olds david wiesa and samit Patel were playing?

Blow To PCB As ECB Bans Its Players From PSL Participation. IPL Allowed

In a fresh setback for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has barred its players from competing in the Pakistan Super League during the domestic season. The newly-drafted policy would prevent England's players from playing in the PSL, Sri Lanka's Premier League, and a few other global leagues during the English summer months. With this decision, the ECB aims to safeguard the quality and integrity of its own domestic competitions like the County Championship, Vitality Blast, and the Hundred.

The policy also prevents players from participating in two parallel leagues. For instance, earlier, players could participate in another event after their teams were eliminated from the first. However, this would no longer be a possibility.

The guidelines, however, allow white-ball-only contracts, like Saqib Mahmood to play in PSL and similar leagues. But, those with contracts with the board that include first-class cricket will not be given the NoC required to participate in such leagues. Permission to miss any domestic white-ball games to compete in overseas tournaments would also not be given, as per The Telegraph.

"This policy gives clarity to players and professional counties around our approach to issuing No Objection Certificates. It will enable us to strike the right balance between supporting players who want to take up opportunities to earn and gain experience, while also protecting the integrity of cricket globally," Richard Gould, ECB chief executive, said on the policy.

T20 and T20 leagues have been growing rapidly all across the globe over the last couple of years. Almost every major cricket playing nation across the globe now has a league of its own. A number of 10-over format leagues have also cropped up in the Middle East.

It has also been reported that 74 England-qualified players appeared in franchise tournaments worldwide last year. But the ECB is now keen to change that and encourage domestic cricket participation in its own tournaments.

It also has to be noted that there' once exception in the rule. The English players are still allowed to participate in the Indian Premier League, which takes place in April-May every year.

Unless other boards also adopt the same policy. There will still be enough overseas players in PSL
