PM Shehbaz lauds police, security forces for preventing ‘attack’ on capital

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday for a briefing on the latest security situation in Islamabad. The meeting focused on the recent efforts to maintain law and order in the capital, particularly in light of the attempted ‘attack’ by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists.

Prime Minister Shehbaz commended the Islamabad police for their "outstanding role" in thwarting the attempted assault on the city. "Islamabad police, along with the Pakistan Army, Punjab police, and Rangers, played a crucial role in maintaining peace," the prime minister said.

During the meeting, the prime minister paid tribute to Constable Hameed Shah, who was martyred while protecting citizens. "May Allah elevate the ranks of the martyr. The nation will always remember this sacrifice," he stated. Shehbaz Sharif also expressed solidarity with the constable’s family and directed authorities to ensure their complete care.

"The safety of Islamabad’s residents and the protection of their lives and property have been ensured," the prime minister affirmed. He added that the situation in the capital is "rapidly returning to normal" and that economic development and prosperity remain the government’s top priorities.

Addressing political tensions, Prime Minister Shehbaz criticised opposition elements, stating, "Our political opponents cannot tolerate Pakistan’s improving economy. The world recognises our economic policies, but our adversaries want to hinder the country’s progress."

The prime minister made it clear that any attempts to destabilise Pakistan’s economy through illegal means would be thwarted. "Upcoming international events in Pakistan will proceed as planned," he assured, highlighting that security arrangements are being handled with the highest standards of excellence.

In his briefing, the interior minister reported that major highways had been reopened to traffic and that the situation was "rapidly returning to normal." Naqvi also updated the prime minister on the repatriation of Pakistani prisoners from Sri Lanka, noting that 56 prisoners would return home today.

Federal Minister for Privatisation Abdul Aleem Khan has generously offered to cover all expenses related to the prisoners' return, a gesture praised by both the interior minister and the prime minister.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his appreciation for the efforts of both the interior minister and the privatisation minister in ensuring the safe return of these Pakistani nationals.

The law and order situation remained tense on the second consecutive day in the federal capital on Saturday as despite stringent security measures, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers managed to reach the protest venue 'D Chowk' by taking advantage of heavy rain which subsided the intensity of the tear gas lobbed by the security forces.

The symbol of PTI's political struggle – D-Chowk - continued to be the battleground between the PTI and law enforcement agencies while Chief Minister Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur remained confined to the KP House for hours on the pretext of holding talks with the authorities concerned amid contradictory reports of his arrest.

Nevertheless, despite the deployment of Pakistan Army in the capital, government ministers' warnings, imposition of Section 144 and closure of roads, the PTI protesters managed to converge at various sites, including briefly at the edge D-Chowk – located right in front of Parliament in Red Zone.

This not only chided the ministers' repeated claims that no one would be allowed to come anywhere near the promised protest site but turned the capital's Blue Area into a battleground as several instances of stone-pelting and tear gas exchanges between the law enforcers and protestors were witnessed there throughout the day. Surprisingly, apart from the K-P CM, the main leadership of PTI wasn't leading the rally from the front or seen at protest site.

The clashes between the law enforcers and PTI supporters were reported from different areas of the twin cities throughout the day amid fiery statements from government ministers and PTI leaders against each other. Meanwhile, the roads remained blocked with containers and cellular services suspended, resulting in increasing difficulties of the citizens manifolds.

The government side claimed that PTI was trying to sabotage the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit by trying to hold a rally at D-Chowk and vowed that it wouldn't be allowed to do so. In contrast, the PTI leadership refuted it by saying that holding peaceful protest was party's right, especially, when it only wanted to come for a day and had no plan to hold a sit-in at D-Chowk.

In a statement, the inspector general of the Punjab Police noted that direct gunfire was aimed at the police. He commended the police for their efforts in preventing any unpleasant incidents. He affirmed that the authorities would not allow any disruption of peace, assuring that Pakistan remains safe and will continue to do so.

Till midnight, the situation stayed volatile in the capital as the pitched battles between the two sides continued to take place as the roads remained closed and cellular networks shut for over 48 hours. Late night, it was reported that police and other law enforcers had managed to disperse protesters from near D-Chowk and surrounding areas.

Brother, PTI's entire politics is based around defaming and damaging the country. What better time to protest and cause havoc around the country then an international SCO meeting.
Really? Who and what is the country. A country is its people and it's people have spoken in favour of IK . You must be embarrassed that your thugs lined up to vote for an amendment that they hadn't seen. Isn't that defaming the country? Isn't kidnapping and murder defaming the country?

Thank God SS is here, in fact the stray dogs in the sectors of IsB were more aware and updated than this thief minister SS

cant believe a people claiming a wrist watch thief to be the symbol of hope lool
😂

Can’t believe people claim Zardari to be a shrewd politician. Since Benazir death he has limited PPP politics within interior Sindh and render his son incapable of getting Pakistani people to vote him in as PM of Pakistan.

PTI protest participants allegedly given government vehicles

Government vehicles were distributed among participants of the PTI protests in Peshawar, according to details available with Aaj News.

Dozens of vehicles were collected from the warehouse and the Excise Department and subsequently handed over to the Chief Minister’s House.

Such vehicles were then provided to PTI workers for the protests, including a list of 52 vehicles of various models, sources said.

Excise Secretary Fayyaz Ali Shah stated that the vehicles were “legally allocated” to the administration, which then transferred them to the Chief Minister’s House.

Different cavalcades of PTI marched towards Islamabad on Friday. One of them was led by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.

But Gandapur told the KP Assembly on Sunday that a maximum of three people were with him when he left for the rally. He turned up in the august house 30 hours after he went missing from the KP House.

Islamabad was sealed for the past three days when supporters of PTI marched towards the federal capital. Mobile and Metro Bus services were suspended.

Really? They had to lock down Islamabad, put IK in solitary and not mention the digging up of roads and the panic in Lahore. Why do they have to do these fascist tactics if the PTI doesn't scare them.

Everyone should be scared of a rabid lunatics lead by a mad man, you have to take safety measures.

The question - what did PTI achieve here?

PTI needs Lord Xi to rescue their Messiah. IF not during the SCO, when??
Chinese brothers need to stand for the people of Pakistan.

What a sick mentality.
But then you have been exposed for this time and time again.

First you say the people are not intelligent enough to have a vote, then you called the PTI supporters who turned up to jalsa's, and who are clearly the vast majority of people of Pakistan, as jobless layabouts.. Now you call them rabid.

You need to crawl under the stone you emerged from because you're not just a sick individual, you're scum, complicit in the crimes of the corrupt leaders whom you support.

Oh and before you mention it again, yes I don't live in Pakistan but I can proudly say that I have done more for Pakistan and its poor then individuals like yourself.

Imran Khan is a maniac and as long as this traitor is alive, there can be no peace and prosperity in this country.

We have to get rid of him to put Pakistan on the right path. There hasn’t been a moment of peace in the last 10 years because of him.

As far as you are concerned, you have done nothing for Pakistan. Your passport pledges allegiance to the crown. The same crown that M.A.Jinnah liberated your forefathers from.

In addition, you pay tax money to the UK government who have used your tax money to kill Muslims in WOT and provides military aid to Israel, so you have Muslim blood on your hands.

You don’t have control over where your tax money goes but you have control over where you live, and you continue to live in a country that supports and finances atrocities against Muslims. It is a choice that you have made and you will have to own up to it on the day of judgement.

Don’t tell me what you have done for the people of Pakistan. It is easy to make lofty claims when you are hiding behind a computer anonymously, so there is no need of patting yourself on the back and sitting on a high horse because it won’t take me long of drag you down.

PTI supporters are failures in life. They are the real life losers. Half of them are in foreign countries offering online support like yourself while the other half is nothing but a burden on Pakistan because they are doing nothing productive instead of helping their manic leader create chaos and anarchy.

Hooliganism? Most of the people coming out are families with their kids who have watched the state take away their rights.

Most of the damage was caused by Maryam Safdar (Nawaz, Hamza or whatever she goes by), where she had the roads dug up just to prevent people from reaching D Chowk.

A bit of pressure/resistance from the authorities and they run away like chickens. No one can forget their meek surrender on 9 May 2023.

This time around it wasn’t any better either. They come out all guns blazing but end up retreating without achieving anything expect disrupting the lives of the citizens for a few days.

My position is that they should come out with molotov’s and head towards GHQ if they really want their country back.

It’s clear that some of the leaders in PTI don’t have the balls to fight back, they’re afraid of being put in jail, they’re afraid of their families being kidnapped.

Regarding your comment on “a bit of resistance from the authorities”, does that include tear gassing kids?

Throwing spikes on the road, that could cause major accidents even to those who aren’t participating in the protest?

Arresting civilians for months by delaying their cases because the judge has to go London for his weekly shopping at Harrods. Lol

Aren't you the guy that told us that it was the Generals that destroyed PK. Another munafiq exposed and humiliated. BTW you ran from the constitutional amendment question from you sane Generals that your sane leaders weren't trusted to see before they voted on. Have you ever been more embarrassed? Probably not, as it's a daily occurrence at my hands since your sane guys took over and brought " sanity" for the last 2.5 years. 🤣🤣🥰🥰🥰

At least they aren't cowards like you. Remember the criticism of the Generals before and the worry about being locked up today has shut you up. What changed Doc?🤣🤣

The point against living in a country that funds and fuels the war that kills Muslims is moot.
You also live in a Country that does the same thing. I’d consider it worse than the west where at least the human liberties are protected and honored. In your Country, people are killed on a daily basis for having dissenting political views.

Pakistanis are renowned hypocrites and you are a fine example of that.

I and most Pakistanis living in Pakistan don’t give lectures on morality and self-righteousness. I only do what is in the best interest of myself and my family and if it harms others, then so be it.

People living overseas are no different than us, except that they have the tendency to glorify their morals and pat themselves on the back for doing XYZ for Pakistan and Muslims when in reality they have done absolutely nothing and it is their tactic to clear their conscience.

When you show them the mirror they start crying.

This is disgusting post from a munafiq like you. It's you har aamis that have killed PKs, not IK, it's you guys that have looted PK not him, it's you guys that oppress PKs and steal their mandates not IK. As long you and your ilk are alive and trying to keep us down we cannot have peace. We are the 90%, you thugs without bullets and guns can't win an election to run a latrine because of the stench that comes from you. Beghairat Munafiq

You are the munafiq that you used skive on duty to argue with people on here about how bad the Generals were and today you are too scared to even write about them. We, overseas PKs didn't vote and IK won a 2/3rd majority

This guy used to drone on about the Generals and how the corrupt were the competent administrators. So embarrassed has he been with their economic disaster he disappeared from Time pass. He diagnosed NSs illness on here and told us IK was fascist for nor allowing him treatment. Then he has the temerity in wanting Dr Yasmin a cancer sufferer locked up without trial for supporting IK. Have you ever come across a more incompetent Doc that is also so immoral.

So what do you expect the authorities and govt. to do? Lay out the red carpet for thousands of aggressive PTI supporters and so-called leaders barging into the capital?

And if you don’t have the stomach for a fight and know that you will retreat once pressure is applied, then there is no reason to embarrass yourself in the first place.

That is all that PTI has achieved with such theatrics. They come out all guns blazing and then run away without achieving anything. What a joke.

They are not authorities they are establisment because they are hated by PKs. 7th February showed that you and your thugs have no support. The brave Dr Yasmin smashed your duffer by 75000 votes, Nani had to get Sanam Javed Kidanpped to stop her standing, and in the whole of my region of Pothowar you didn't win a single seat. The commissioner that revealed these facts was kidnapped.

I might be wrong but when you have thousands of protesters marching towards D Chowk, your objective should be to make sure there’s no riots. Those peaceful protesters turned aggressive when the police chose to tear gas them, shoot them with rubber bullets etc. In most countries, the police will try to defuse the situation, in Pakistan the police cause even more problems.

You should be happy that PTI has broken the cycle, Pakistan has a bright future now that they’ve been exposed to the thugs of PPP and PML-N, the establishments two pawns. In the next 10-20 years, we’ll see the end of Sharif/Zardari rule in all provinces, we’ll see the establishment backing off, and we’ll see a PM that isn’t a boot polisher.

Civilian rule will come sooner or later because of IK and his party Workers sacrifices. NS and AZ lept into the laps of the boots when their game got exposed by IK and soon the public realised that this Noora Kushti was the PK of WWE.

Firstly, there is nothing peaceful about PTI protests. They are a bunch of animals.

Secondly, you can’t break the cycle when you open the doors to the same corrupt mafia that your previously criticized.

PTI’s manifesto died after 2013 when the maniac Khan realized that he cannot win majority without the vote banks of the seasoned politicians.

This is why he opened the doors to crooks like SMQ, Pervez Khattak, Firdous Awan, Fawad Chaudhry and a host of others who didn’t represent what PTI stood for. He even formed allegiance with Sheikh Rasheed whom he used to insult all day.

PTI’s foundations are built on black money of Jahangir Tareen and other money launderers who have sponsored freeloader Imran Khan for political gains. In addition, he has also been caught using SKMH funds for political gains.

Imran is one of the biggest frauds this country has ever seen and PTI is a joke. It is not even a proper party. Just a fan club of one cult leader.

If Imran lived a few thousand years ago, he would have started his own religion.

When Imran dies, PTI will disintegrate into smaller parties. The supporters who worship him will also disappear.

However, the Sharif and Bhutto family names will survive. People criticize family politics but that is what ensures survival. PTI has no succession plan - Imran’s own sons couldn’t care less about Pakistan. PTI will cease to exist after this mad man gets lost.

Islamabad ATC reserves decision on further remand of Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan

The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has reserved its decision on the request for extending the physical remand of Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, sisters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan.

During the hearing, the court was reviewing the case related to the vandalism at D-Chowk during a PTI protest. Both Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan were presented after the completion of their two-day physical remand.

Advocate Niazullah Niazi argued that the cases against PTI leaders and workers were politically motivated.

Judge Abu Al-Hasanat Zulqarnain remarked that political victimisation should be condemned by both sides, adding that he personally opposed such actions and emphasised the need to think about the country and move forward together.

Prosecutor Raja Naveed requested an additional 15-day remand, presenting testimony from co-accused Adnan, who claimed that Aleema and Uzma Khan had provided explosive materials.

He further alleged that the two women had planned to use explosives near the Parliament at D-Chowk as part of an anti-state conspiracy.

Lawyer Salman Safdar said that Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan were not arrested from the scene; they were not involved in the incident.

Aleema Khan approached the rostrum and stated, "I have appeared in your court many times."

The judge, in a light-hearted exchange, replied, "Yes, you were the one who brought the bicycle case you had locked us in a box," which sparked laughter in the courtroom.

He further joked, "You even had a wall broken in the jail, and I gave you a bicycle. You seem more energetic than the PTI's founder!"

Aleema Khan also mentioned that the police were asking for her phone's password, but she refused to unlock it.

The judge suggested, "If unlocking the phone is all it takes, then do it and be done with it."

The court has now reserved its decision on whether to grant the prosecution's request for an extended remand of the two women.

Punjab govt enforces Section 144 ahead of PTI protests

In response to the opposition’s call for protests across various cities, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings for three days in eight cities. The decision comes ahead of demonstrations planned by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as part of a broader campaign.

On Tuesday, PTI announced a fresh wave of protests in several districts of Punjab, including the provincial capital, Lahore.

The party's political committee announced simultaneous rallies in six districts between October 11 and October 14, demanding the supremacy of the Constitution, judicial independence, and the release of PTI founder Imran Khan, who remains imprisoned in Adiala Jail.

In response, the Punjab government has once again enforced Section 144 in Multan, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Vehari, Pakpattan, Okara, and Wazirabad. According to a government notification, the ban will be in effect from Thursday, October 10, until Saturday, October 12.

A spokesperson for the provincial Home Department said the decision was made following requests from district administrations.

The ban will prohibit all political gatherings, rallies, protests, sit-ins, and other similar activities in select cities. The spokesperson emphasised that the move was necessary due to security concerns, warning that public gatherings could be vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

The spokesperson added that the imposition of Section 144 is intended to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of citizens and property in these districts.

Despite the restrictions, PTI plans to proceed with its protests. The revised schedule includes rallies in Multan and Sahiwal on October 11, Gujranwala and Sargodha on October 12, Dera Ghazi Khan on October 13, and Lahore and Faisalabad on October 14.

PTI political committee announces protest at D-Chowk on October 15

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political committee has once again announced plans to hold a protest at D-Chowk in Islamabad on October 15.

According to Express News, the emergency meeting of PTI’s political committee took place without the participation of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.

Following the meeting, PTI Secretary of Information Sheikh Waqas Akram issued a statement confirming that a large-scale protest will be held at D-Chowk on October 15.

He further stated that all organisational heads, from the central committee to the regional level, have been instructed to prepare for the demonstration.

In light of preparations for the peaceful protest at D-Chowk, the party has cancelled the planned protests across Punjab, which will be rescheduled.

The PTI political committee emphasised that the "illegitimate rulers," who they accused of stealing the people's mandate and disregarding the Constitution and law, remain unwilling to cease their oppression.

The committee also claimed that PTI founder Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail, is being subjected to a new wave of brutality.

The statement further stated that Imran Khan's life, health, and safety are being deliberately endangered as all of his fundamental and human rights have been revoked.

Nobody will be allowed to disrupt SCO Summit: Atta Tarar

Minister for Information Atta Tarar said that nobody would be allowed to disrupt the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Islamabad, hinting at strict action against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) planned protests.

“Those who have a mindset to conspire against the country should better stay at home as no miscreant will be allowed to disrupt the SCO Summit in Islamabad,” Atta Tarar said while talking to the media.

The minister said that Islamabad has been made fully safe and secure to welcome foreign delegations including 12 heads of the nations for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Conference, scheduled for October 15-16.

“The announcements (for protest) do not make any difference as Islamabad has been made fully safe and secure,” he said while referring to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf which had announced to hold protest in coming days.

“It (SCO Conference) will go as planned and will elevate Pakistan’s prestige and improve its image at the international level,” the minister remarked.

He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has personally reviewed the arrangements for the reception of different head of governments arriving in Islamabad to attend the SCO conference. “This shows the importance of such a grand event in Pakistan which will be instrumental to boost the economic growth in the country,” he added.

Lahore police crack down on PTI leaders to foil Islamabad protest

The Lahore police have initiated a crackdown on the leaders and activists of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) in connection with their planned protest in Islamabad on Oct 15.

According to police sources, comprehensive lists of those involved in organizing and preparing for the protests have been finalized.

The crackdown is being led by the Organized Crime Unit, in coordination with the operations and investigation wings, targeting both previously wanted individuals and those recently added to the police’s lists. The focus is on PTI workers involved in cases registered during the protests on May 9 and October 21, 2023.

Authorities have also directed the Special Branch to closely monitor the activities of local PTI leaders and activists. Police sources revealed that action will be taken against any leaders found to be mobilizing or organizing workers for the rally.

The police has been tasked with not letting PTI workers in Lahore leave for Islamabad for the protest at D-Chowk on October 15.

As Pakistan prepares to host a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, the PTI has raised concerns about potential disruptions to the nation's international image and stability following its announcement to stage protest.

The summit, which is expected to draw distinguished guests from various nations, marks a significant opportunity for Pakistan to bolster its international standing.

However, PTI’s recent announcement of a protest on October 15 in Islamabad's D-Chowk has raised eyebrows and cast a shadow over the proceedings.

PTI leader Sheikh Waqas Akram stated via social media that the party's political committee has instructed its organizational heads to prepare for a large-scale demonstration.

This protest is scheduled to coincide with the arrival of foreign delegations, leading many to view it as a deliberate attempt to undermine Pakistan’s international reputation.

Defence minister Khawaja Asif vows to counter PTI's Oct 15 protest

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has announced that the government will deploy the full force of the state to counter the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest planned for October 15 at Islamabad's D-Chowk.

In a press conference held in the federal capital on Saturday, Khawaja Asif labelled PTI as agents of 'anti-Islamic forces,' stating that the party has never condemned terrorism, regardless of whether it occurs in Balochistan, Afghanistan, or Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

He accused the party of bringing thousands of terrorists into Pakistan during its time in power.

Khawaja Asif further stated that Imran Khan, the leader of PTI, was responsible for the country's downfall and suggested that the party's sole demand revolves around Imran Khan's leadership.

He claimed that there was no concern for the country or its development from PTI.

He highlighted recent positive developments in Pakistan, including a decrease in inflation, resumption of investment, and a Rs460 billion relief in electricity costs under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's administration.

He said that PTI aims to obstruct this progress and claimed that the party only envisions a Pakistan where Imran remains in power.

He referenced Shandana Gulzar's statement that "without Khan, there is no Pakistan," suggesting that this is the mindset that fueled PTI's recent protest call.

Khawaja Asif also remarked on the duality of PTI's leadership, noting that when the establishment supports them, they refer to the army chief as their "father," but now, Imran Khan has tweeted against the army chief and the military from jail.

He furhter accused PTI of orchestrating a conspiracy that began with the 2014 protests, culminating in the events of May 9.

He expressed concern that they wish to undermine the country’s dignity and economic stability.

He stated that the state will deploy all necessary resources to prevent the protest on October 15, labelling it an attack on the country's integrity.

He urged the judiciary to take notice of Imran Khan's actions and their implications for national security.

PTI’s Oct 15 protest plans during SCO summit ‘political terrorism’: Ahsan Iqbal

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Saturday strongly condemned the PTI’s D-Chowk protest call for October 15, when the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit is set to begin, as “political terrorism”, aimed at maligning the country and stopping its development and economic progress.

The PTI has announced the suspension of its protests in Punjab and issued a nationwide call urging party leaders and workers to converge in Islamabad on Oct 15. The PTI has also demanded immediate access for party leaders and family members to its founder, Imran Khan, who is incarcerated in Adiala Jail. The government earlier banned visits to prisoners at Adiala Jail until Oct 18 due to security concerns related to the high-profile SCO summit.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the planning minister expressed disappointment at the timing of the PTI’s protest coinciding with the SCO summit, which he said was a great honour for the country.

“Now there is no doubt, that terrorism in Karachi and political terrorism protest calls are similar,” the minister said adding that the “scriptwriter” was the same person who on one hand was using terrorists to carry out explosive attacks, and on the other, was using PTI to spread anarchy and undermine Pakistan’s vital interests.

Iqbal urged PTI supporters who genuinely wanted change and development to recognise the harm caused by their party’s actions. The minister said that the PTI’s protests in 2014 had delayed the Chinese president’s visit to Pakistan.

“The PTI is attempting to undermine the government’s economic recovery efforts. It’s crucial to acknowledge the damage caused by these actions and consider the consequences of supporting policies that hinder Pakistan’s growth and development,” he urged.

The minister said the country cannot afford to indulge in destructive politics. “Just because PTI’s leader is jailed, doesn’t justify chaos,” he said.

The minister said that it was a proud moment for Pakistan to host the SCO summit on Oct 15-16 and a significant diplomatic achievement for the country.

Separately, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said while speaking to the media in Sialkot that the courts should take notice of the protest call, saying they were bound to do so.

“The state will use all its power, resources and might … to stop this attack at the country’s repute,” he said, adding that the government would not allow anyone to sabotage the SCO moot.

“Absolutely not,” the defence minister vowed.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan Amir Muqam also strongly rejected the PTI’s protest call.

“It is proof of anti-nationalism. There is no doubt that PTI’s agenda seemed to be anti-Pakistan because PTI has declared the protest on this important occasion”.

He added that the PTI “once again showed its real face as the meeting of SCO is very important for Pakistan”.

The minister noted that in any case, the protest could not be allowed on the occasion and the protest call was “condemnable and very sad”, adding that protests and processions could be held at any other time.

Ali Muhammad Khan opposes PTI's protest call during SCO summit

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ali Muhammad Khan has expressed opposition to the party's call for a protest at D-Chowk during the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

Speaking on Express News' program "Center Stage" with host Rahman Azhar, Khan stated, “In my personal opinion, there should not be a protest during the SCO meeting. However, if we are continually pushed against the wall, then we will have no option left.”

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political committee once again announced plans to hold a protest at D-Chowk in Islamabad on October 15, last night.

According to Express News, the emergency meeting of PTI’s political committee took place without the participation of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.

The statement further stated that Imran Khan's life, health, and safety are being deliberately endangered as all of his fundamental and human rights have been revoked.

In response, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif slammed "chaos-monger" Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday, as the opposition party announced another "forceful" protest in the D-Chowk of Islamabad on October 15, which fall on the first day of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

The PTI decision was taken during an emergency meeting of its political committee. According to a statement, in view of the preparations for the protest on October 15, the protests planned in the districts of Punjab had been cancelled and their schedule would be announced later.

Addressing a Police Darbar at the Police Lines Headquarters in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz paid glowing tribute to the police for their "bravery and courage", effectively thwarting a recent violent political rally in the federal capital that, he said, was aimed at creating chaos.

"The Islamabad police foiled the fanatic group's deadly plan," Shehbaz said. "In 2014, these chaos-mongers rioted day and night for seven months at D-Chowk, forcing the government to postpone the visit of our close friend, Chinese President Xi Jinping," he added.

"Then, the rioters damaged private property, there was an unholy plan to attack PTV and parliament, and hundreds of police officers and personnel including [Senior Superintendent of Police] Asmatullah Junejo, were injured," he continued.

A tough choice for PTI supporters.

Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has enforced a five-day ban on protests, sit-ins, rallies, and public gatherings under Section 144, citing security concerns

The ban, effective from October 13 to 17, was imposed following advice from Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi.

According to a notification issued on Saturday, various factions were planning simultaneous demonstrations, which could lead to security risks and public inconvenience.

"The protests, demonstrations, and rallies scheduled for the same day could create law and order issues," warned the Karachi police chief.

In a separate move, the Punjab government imposed similar restrictions for three days in five districts — Dera Ghazi Khan, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, and Kot Addu — citing potential terrorist threats.

“All political gatherings, protests, and sit-ins are prohibited under this order,” stated a home department spokesperson, stressing the importance of public safety during this period.

Official notifications for both Karachi and Punjab were issued, underscoring the need for heightened security and protection of lives and property.

Dar urges PTI to postpone Oct 15 protest in national interest

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has said that holding protests during a nationally important event does not send a positive message, urging those wishing to protest to wait until after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

Talking to media in Islamabad, Dar highlighted Pakistan was fully prepared to welcome participants of the SCO summit, including leaders and delegates form member and observe states.

He emphasised this event marked a significant diplomatic opportunity for Pakistan, occurring after 27 years, with around 1,000 foreign delegates expected.

Dar urged the PTI leadership to postpone its protest planned for October 15, stressing the importance of national unity during such critical international engagements.

The deputy prime minister further stated that the Chinese prime minister will also pay a bilateral visit to Pakistan, while the Indian foreign minister has not requested a bilateral meeting.

He mentioned that all institutions and departments have made excellent arrangements through mutual cooperation, and the SCO Secretary-General will brief the media about the conference.

Dar said that the assumption of Pakistan's global isolation had been disproven, as the visits of the Malaysian Prime Minister and the Saudi delegation were highly successful, and the Chinese Prime Minister is arriving a day before the meeting.

“Peace and stability in the region are essential for sustainable development. Pakistan has highlighted the issues of Palestine and Kashmir at all international forums, and the process of sending aid to Palestinians is ongoing,” he added.

SCO summit: PML-N rejects PTI's offer to withdraw Oct 15 protest

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has dismissed the condition offered by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which the former ruling party had set out for calling off its October 15 protest, as it coincides with the highly-anticipated Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

The PML-N-led ruling coalition, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), had urged the PTI to re-evaluate its call for protest in the federal capital which will be hosting the high-level moot from October 15 to 16.

Speaking on Geo News programme "Naya Pakistan", PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram had said: "You can open the jail for a jalsa [...] then if you're so worried about the SCO, then allow a meeting with [Imran] Khan. If his sisters and doctors say that everything is fine after meeting him, then there'll be no protest."

Explaining that the meeting would take 10 to 15 minutes, he stressed that the party's leadership was worried about its founding chairman's health.

"You've made us incommunicado," he said, claiming that the authorities were not allowing meetings with the ex-prime minister.

The PTI spokesperson also dispelled reports that there were differences within the party leadership over holding the October 15 rally.

The News reported that PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, among others, opposed the rally, while Hammad Azhar, Salman Akram Raja, and others advocated for holding the protest.

Meanwhile, the party has also written a letter to the Ministry of Interior requesting a meeting to be scheduled with the former prime minister. "PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar and Hamid Raza should be allowed to meet the PTI founder."

The letter also mentioned that their last meeting with the PTI's founding chairman was on October 3.

'Effort to blackmail the government'

PML-N leader Talal Chaudhry, responding to the PTI's demand, said that Khan is the most privileged prisoner in history. He added that Khan is already having regular meetings, implying there is no restriction on his interactions.

Chaudhry further criticised PTI's narrative, stating: "They are using the SCO conference as an excuse."

He emphasised the significance of the event, saying: "The SCO conference is a major international event, with 200 delegations coming to Pakistan. This conference is not about any individual; it is directly tied to the country’s economy and future."

He also dismissed PTI's protest plans, accusing them of attempting to blackmail the state. "The call for protest is merely an effort to blackmail the government," Chaudhry said.

He highlighted that, despite being a prisoner, Khan is receiving VIP treatment. "Along with meetings, he is also enjoying special privileges. A VIP prisoner is getting VIP facilities," he claimed.

Concluding his statement, Chaudhry expressed doubt about PTI's ability to follow through on their protest threats. "They might think about protesting, but they won’t have the courage to actually do it," he said. He accused PTI of using the situation as a pretext to attack the SCO conference.

PTI decides to postpone Oct 15 protest amid SCO moot

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) decided on Monday to postpone its scheduled protest on October 15 amid the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

According to details, the meeting of the PTI political committee was held. On this occasion, the decision was made due to the majority of the opinions of the PTI political committee members.

Sources divulged that PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan had discussed the matters pertaining to the governmental offer with the political committee.

Furthermore, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had contacted Barrister Gohar and offered the medical examination of the deposed prime minister.

The government had offered the medical examination of the PTI founder from the PIMS Hospital doctors.

Meanwhile, the government had not agreed to conduct the medical examination of the PTI founder from the doctors of Shaukat Khanum Hospital.

The PTI leadership on the outside are beholden to the Generals. Who in the right mind would trust a murderous turd like Naqvi and his master.

Rumours about a verbal spat between Hammad Azhar & Gandapur in core meeting, Gandapur is right provincial resources are being used for protests and some of the machinery being captured by Fed. Also Punjab leadership has let them down during recent protests why not PTI Punjab members arrange a protest and make things happen for Gandapur & Co.

More than Punjab leadership its the PTM leadership who has the balls to stand up against Est. Gandapur should work with them.

didn't Imran request US support after complaining about USA involvement in overthrowing his government. There are also huge rumours going around saying he and PTI have sought support from India. Obviously, we have no way to verify the veracity of those rumours, but it is all over the social media. A lot of PTI supporters think nothing of that.

Each and every PTI leader is compromised. The PTI was IK or nothing party. Once IK is out of the picture, it will dissolve into irrelevancy like MQM.

The only vocal ones remaining come from balochistan and mainly kpk and they are simply on khans side due to ethnic provincial politics they are of the same pashtun afghan supremacy lot as the afghan communists , taliban , ttp, anp , ptm , bla etc etc just provincial racist fascists in the mold of zelenskys ukranian nazis whom the establishment have been at war since last 20yrs they keep popping up in different forms clean shave messiah , isis khorasan, mullah sajna , mahrang baloch , manzoor pashteen gilaman wazir but they are all one . A week won't go by where they will cause murder and terror start protesting or carrying out attacks.

Asking a congresswoman to raise awareness of the human rights violations isn’t really asking the US for support, is it? He would’ve asked many countries to raise awareness.

Also, if you don’t believe US wasn’t involved, just imagine Modi going to Russia and months later Gandhi is your new PM.

Can’t really compare it to MQM, I may be wrong but their only stronghold was Karachi.

The establishment has a problem, they can get rid of PTI but where will the voters go. They won’t go back to the thugs of PML-N and PPP that’s for sure.

To be honest Imran is the only reason why all out civil war hasn't broken out in Pakistan yet. We have been bought onto the verge of massive civil unrest on multiple occassions in the past 2+ years and always it has been Imran who retreats leaving his supports fuming.

If Establishment do end up making this mistake of taking out Khan whilst in prison then there will be nothing holding the public back from anarchy. Simple look at the pupils protest and it was a nightmare for Punjab police to control that, imagine the possibilities if PTI supporters took to street with intention of civil unrest.

Time will tell how everyone's tales will end and how history will remember them. IK, Nawaz and Zardari are all in their twilights and whilst IK name will bear weightage and be remembered in positive tone Nawaz and Zardari will be remembered along the lines of General Zia and how much it pegged Pakistan back.

On flip side that day ain't far away that young politicians like Bilawal will be using Khan's name to garner support in Parliament (obviously once Khan is gone). The leaders in this nation are bonafide hypocrites and their hypocrisy will be on full flow if Khan comes into power or is eliminated by Establishment.

Anti IK Brigade is in a situation like playing cards near a petrol sea, things can get out of control anytime.

PTI announces nationwide protest on Friday

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s political committee announced nationwide protests against the proposed constitutional amendment on Friday.

Following a meeting on Wednesday, the committee decided to strongly oppose the government’s amendment plan. A statement released after the meeting declared that the party will hold large-scale protests across the country this Friday.

The statement also demanded the immediate restoration of fundamental rights for PTI founder Imran Khan, as well as access for his family and party leaders.

The committee instructed all regions to organize peaceful protests at all district headquarters after Friday prayers, appealing to all segments of society who believe in the supremacy of the constitution to participate.

The committee also agreed to make every effort to block the amendment’s passage in both houses of parliament.

It further demanded the immediate release of PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s sisters, Aleem Khanum and Uzma Khanum, along with all arrested leaders, workers, and parliamentarians.

PTI protests: Lahore police arrest 350 ahead of planned demonstrations

Following a call for protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Lahore police have arrested over 350 party supporters and activists as part of a crackdown aimed at maintaining order.

The arrests were made as police targeted individuals suspected of inciting public unrest.

The police have issued a list of more than 1,600 active PTI members, who are suspected of facilitating widespread arrests, Express News reported.

The detained activists were taken into custody across various cities, including Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, for their alleged involvement in inciting citizens to protest.

The police conducted operations in several localities, including Iqbal Town, Johar Town, and Defence, among others.

Special teams have been formed to ensure a robust response to the situation, with police officials stating that they are seeking detention orders for individuals deemed a threat to public peace.

As part of the preparations for the nationwide protests scheduled to follow Friday prayers, the authorities have increased surveillance and enforcement measures to deter any potential disturbances.

Despite the arrests, PTI has reiterated its commitment to mobilising its supporters and maintaining its political activities across the country.

Earlier today, multiple roads in Rawalpindi were blocked following PTI's call for nationwide protests after Friday prayers.

Key roads, including Peshawar Road near the Cheering Cross and NAL Road near the Military Hospital (MH), were barricaded on both sides, leaving only one lane open for traffic, Express News reported.

Police had set up zig-zag pickets at entry points into Rawalpindi, with additional personnel deployed. Roads leading to Murree Road's Marrir Chowk and Liaquat Bagh have also been sealed off, while Swann Bridge allows single-lane traffic for commuters.

Despite these blockades, other roads in Rawalpindi remain are open as usual.

In the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, the metro bus service remains suspended for a fifth consecutive day. The bus operations were initially halted from October 14-16 due to security measures surrounding the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

Despite the summit ending, the service did not resume on October 17, and remains suspended today.

Yesterday, Punjab government enforced Section 144 across the province, prohibiting all forms of protests, rallies, and public gatherings for two days- Friday, October 18, to Saturday, October 19.

"In view of the prevailing law and order situation and threat perceptions, any kind of protest or procession could become a soft target for terrorists," the Home Department said in a notification issued on Thursday.

The move came a day after the PTI announced a nationwide protest at the district level, urging supporters to gather on October 18 to demonstrate against constitutional amendments and the imprisonment of the party's founding chairman, Imran Khan.

PTI's protest call falls flat in Rawalpindi as police arrest 10 workers at Committee Chowk

Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) call for district-level protests across the country following Friday prayers largely failed in Rawalpindi, with only a small group of workers gathering at Committee Chowk.

Despite heightened security measures, no significant protests were recorded elsewhere in the city or surrounding areas.

At Committee Chowk, around 30 to 40 PTI supporters attempted to stage a protest but were swiftly dispersed when police launched a crackdown. Ten workers were arrested, while others fled into nearby streets. The protest was in response to PTI's call to demonstrate against potential constitutional amendments and restrictions on meeting the party's founder, Imran Khan.

“Although there were not large numbers, our workers did reach Committee Chowk, and some were arrested,” PTI leader Shehryar Riaz said. He added, “Many of our workers are already detained, but we remain disciplined and recorded our protest wherever possible.”

Rawalpindi, like other cities in Punjab, was under Section 144, which prohibits gatherings and protests. Anticipating significant protests, police had stationed containers and barriers at major roads and intersections across the city. However, by midday, many roads were reopened as the expected large-scale protests did not materialise.

Despite the low turnout, security forces remained on alert. Police, under the leadership of SSP Operations Hafiz Kamran Asghar, conducted a flag march across Rawalpindi and the cantonment areas to display their preparedness for any unrest.

PTI had initially planned nationwide protests in response to Khan’s imprisonment and the constitutional amendment discussions. The party condemned what they described as the "mistreatment" of their leader, who remains in Adiala Jail, and demanded that his legal and personal rights be restored.

In Rawalpindi, PTI’s local leadership acknowledged the limited turnout but defended the protest, insisting that the movement continues despite obstacles.

PTI workers clash with Karachi police amid Section 144

Karachi Police on Friday arrested over 20 workers and leaders of the PTI for violating Section 144 by staging a rally in Saddar’s Empress Market, demanding the release of party founder Imran Khan, according to police and party officials.

Separately, supporters of the religiopolitical party Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) staged their own demonstration in the Saddar area protesting the death of a party supporter during a rally on October 13. The protesters clashed with police, leaving seven cops injured, including a lady constable.

Section 144 is a legal provision that empowers district administrations to prohibit an assembly of four or more people in an area for a limited period.

“The police have arrested a total of 35 workers of both parties, including the leader of a religious party as both parties violated section 144,” South Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Syed Asad Raza told Dawn.com.

PTI revises protest strategy: Announces rallies in major cities in Nov

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has altered its protest strategy, with plans once again to hold rallies in major cities in November, according to insider sources.

The decision was made during a recent political committee meeting of the party, which also highlighted new organizational changes and case follow-ups.

The committee approved holding of a rally in Peshawar on November 1 and a second one in Quetta on November 8. To obtain the necessary No-Objection Certificate for the Quetta rally, senior PTI representative Salman Akram Raja will visit Balochistan on November 6.

A third rally in Karachi has been tentatively set for the third week of November.

A key agreement reached during the meeting was that all the future decisions will be approved by the political committee, while a committee meeting will be held especially before planning to meet party founder Imran Khan.

According to the sources, the political committee decided to take up the pending cases of the PTI again, as well as pursue cases regarding its intra-party elections, reserved seats and others. It was also decided to once again raise the request for a reference against the chief election commissioner.

The committee further decided to reinstate proceedings on several internal matters, including intra-party elections, reserved seats, and other previously postponed cases. Additionally, PTI has resolved to pursue a reference request against the chief election commissioner, reinforcing its stance on electoral issues.

According to sources, the political committee also discussed a proposal to reassess the party’s organizational processes, with Salman Akram Raja conveying a message from founder Imran Khan.

PTI plans nationwide protests, rallies with other political parties

PTI leader Asad Qaiser has stated that efforts will be made to unite all parties at the national and provincial levels as they plan protests across the country.

Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail, Qaiser expressed his concerns regarding the current government's approach, describing it as "fascist" while claiming they falsely present themselves as proponents of democracy.

He emphasised that elected representatives have other important discussions to conduct beyond just political dialogue with their leader.

He accused Maryam Nawaz of governing the province through "fascist methods," asserting that citizens are being deprived of their democratic rights.

"These tactics will not intimidate us; that is your misconception," he stated, reaffirming the PTI's commitment to persistently fight the constitutional and legal battles. Qaiser added that such governments do not last long.

KP CM Gandapur announces PTI rally in Swabi on Nov 9, says party ready to ‘make ultimate sacrifice’

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Saturday announced that the PTI would stage a rally in Swabi on November 9, adding that his party was ready to “make the ultimate sacrifice”.

Addressing reporters in Rawalpindi, CM Gandapur issued a “final call” to the party’s supporters, saying that he was “tired of being peaceful” in the face of the state’s heavy-handedness.

“We will go out there and be ready to make the ultimate sacrifice,” Gandapur said. “Despite being peaceful, our workers are beaten and arrested. They are acquitted in court cases only to be re-arrested and charged with new offences. This is intolerable.”

“We will deliver a comprehensive briefing on this soon (Nov 9 rally),” he said. “Initially, we had planned a rally in Peshawar, but we have decided that we will host a gathering on the Swabi motorway. People from all over Pakistan are encouraged to attend.”

He added that once all the details get finalised he will “issue a final call” to all attendees. “

“Final call in this regard means that everyone should tell their families to prepare for the possibility that they might not return home,” Gandapur explained.

Despite being ominous with his remarks, he stressed that the PTI would remain peaceful. “We and our leader (Imran Khan) have been mistreated by the state despite us being peaceful. With the power of the people, we will come out and return home with our rights.”

Responding to questions, the chief minister said that the originally planned November 8 rally had not been cancelled, but that “the venue and date have been shifted”.

He called the upcoming rally a “jirga for all of Pakhtunkhwa” and added that after consultations, “a final schedule will be announced” about rally routes among other key details.

“Those attending from other parts of the country will join in and represent their areas,” he added.

‘No democracy prevails in country,’ PTI lambasts govt

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) leadership lambasted on Wednesday the incumbent government, asserting that there “prevails no democracy” in the country.

Expressing his thoughts, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said: “The lawlessness continues to dominate in the country for a while.”

“Khawaja Sheraz had been picked by unknown people, which we condemn,” he added.

Khan maintained: “The special committee of the parliament has done nothing for the protection of the lawmakers. How a parliament, who himself is not getting protection, will raise voice for the betterment of the people?”

Meanwhile, expressing his thoughts, PTI leader Sheikh Waqas Akram said: “Every NA member is facing the same experience.”

“A group of rulers are not ready to accept the supremacy of the law, constitution and democracy in the country,” Akram said.

'Banana republic'

Earlier, PTI senior leader Asad Qaiser on Wednesday accused the incumbent government of running a “banana republic”.

In a video statement, the former National Assembly speaker said, “Is this possible to live under the rule of jungle?" The masses are facing hardships to eat bread twice a day.”

He took a swipe at Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, saying, “Is this the democracy on which both Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari claim to believe? These two [Nawaz and Bilawal] have harmed the country.”

“The country is unfortunately leading towards anarchy,” averred Qaiser.

He maintained: “It is the masses of the country who are having a real power.”

PTI's 'do-or-die' protest call to pave way for crackdown, warns Sanaullah

Adviser to Prime Minister on Political And Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Monday said that incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was "mistreating" his party workers and supporters by giving "do-or-die-call".

“When they [PTI] speak about wearing shrouds, funeral prayers [...] they are giving a free hand to law enforcers to launch a crackdown against them,” he said while speaking on Geo News programme 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath'.

Instead of threatening to march towards Islamabad and staging a sit-in there, the PML-N leader said, the PTI should ask to hold a "democratic and peaceful" protest or rally for the fulfilment of its demands.

In response to a question, Sanaullah said the "monopoly on violence" belongs to the state and not to any group or political party. “When someone threatens to march with shrouds tied, should they be welcomed?”

“We [PML-N] never talked about sit-ins or staging violence in our protest,” he said, noting that the jailed PTI founder wanted the opposition to be eliminated through the establishment.

He claimed that Imran’s differences with former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa began when he demanded the elimination of the opposition. “When Bajwa did not cooperate, so he started calling him Mir Jafar and Mir Sadiq,” he added.

Sanaullah further said that Imran has no choice expect getting rid of "will-not-spare-anyone" policy. “His [PTI founder] stubbornness led himself and the country to trouble.”

The statement came as the PTI has announced giving a final protest call against the incumbent rulers, warning that the demonstration will not end the until the fulfilment of their demands which include the release of party founder Imran Khan and the "restoration of judicial independence".

Imran Khan posted on his X account:

I appeal to all Pakistanis to reach Islamabad on November 24 and not return home until our demands are met

Our demands are:

Abolition of the 26th Amendment

Restoration of democracy and the constitution

Return of the mandate

Release of all innocent political prisoners

I have formed a leadership committee that will lead the protest and all negotiations

Imran gives ‘final call’ for nationwide protests

Former prime minister Imran Khan on Wednesday issued a “final call” for nationwide protests on Nov 24, denouncing what he described as the stolen mandate, the unjust arrests of people, and the passage of the 26th amendment, which he said has strengthened a “dictatorial regime”.

Since Mr Khan’s arrest in August 2023 on several counts, his party has been holding protests across the country for his release and against the alleged rigging of the Feb 8 elections.

Mr Khan made the announcement while speaking to media persons after a court hearing related to a £190 million corruption case.

The accountability court could not record statements from Mr Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, as the defence requested a ruling on their acquittal applications first.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Khan declared Nov 24 a critical day for nationwide demonstrations and urged citizens, both at home and abroad, to march in solidarity.

He called the protests a litmus test for the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and appealed for the active participation of the country’s legal community, civil society and overseas supporters.

The protests, he said, are aimed at reversing the 26th amendment, restoring PTI’s electoral mandate and securing the release of detained party members.

The former premier also encouraged Pakistanis living overseas to hold demonstrations in major global cities to draw international attention to PTI’s cause.

Calling this situation “the most egregious betrayal in the nation’s history”, Mr Khan emphasised that protests would persist if demands are not met, signalling a potential escalation of political unrest.

Court proceedings

Accountability Judge Nasir Javed Rana adjourned the court proceedings until Friday (tomorrow) as legal teams await clarity from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on whether the acquittal petitions should be resolved before further trial proceedings.

Advocate Faisal Chaudhry, representing Mr Khan and Bushra Bibi, highlighted the IHC’s instruction to address the acquittal applications first. However, according to court statements, the accountability court has not yet received a formal directive on this matter.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor countered that no high court stay order was in place and argued that criminal cases were not subject to such delays.

The prosecutor insisted that the accused should record statements under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which allows defendants to present their version of events and address evidence against them.

He noted that despite three previous opportunities, Mr Khan and Bushra Bibi had not given their statements, while also pointing out that defence lawyers were allowed 37 chances to cross-examine the final witness.

‘Protests to be dealt with strictly’

Reacting to Imran Khan’s call for a power show in Islamabad on Nov 24, the Punjab government has vowed to respond firmly, warning that the protest would be handled with an iron hand.

“We will not allow any form of mischief under the guise of ‘peaceful’ protests,” said Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari on Wednesday. “Anyone who breaks the law or causes public distress will be dealt with strictly.”

Ms Bokhari claimed that PTI’s political foundation was rooted in protests, rallies and sit-ins. “As prosperity returns to Pakistan, PTI is unwilling to accept it,” she said. “The role of the ‘umpire’, the conspiratorial behaviour and the facilitation to the PTI’s founder has been the foundation of the political journey of this party.”

She accused PTI of drawing the nation’s youth into its “lust for power” while Mr Khan’s family enjoys a comfortable life abroad.

Indirectly referring to graft allegations against Ms Khan and his wife, Ms Bokhari added that those who once chanted “thief” had now been “caught red-handed in their own family’s corruption”. She lauded Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for launching historic welfare initiatives and development projects for the province, contrasting them with PTI’s approach.

Ms Bokhari said the political life of PTI’s founder has revolved around “dheel (relief) and deal”.

She added, “PTI and its leader only dream of protests. Genuine political figures prefer to launch political struggles and do not dream of attacking the federation under the guise of politics.”

PTI reaction

Responding to the Punjab information minister’s remarks, PTI Punjab Information Secretary Shaukat Basra countered that PML-N’s political ascent had been facilitated by the establishment.

In a statement, he claimed that the current government came to power with the support of the “umpire” and through “Form 47 manipulation”.

Mr Basra criticised PML-N’s “audacity” in calling others thieves, noting that the ruling family is currently in London.

He said Imran Khan had awakened national consciousness and led with a much higher standard of politics compared to PML-N, adding that PTI would continue its “peaceful struggle” to challenge PML-N leaders and their allies.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi urges PTI supporters to hold protest on 24th

In a rare public appearance during his trial before an anti-terrorism court on Saturday, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) vice chairman and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi appealed to citizens to respond to PTI founding chairman Imran Khan’s call for protest in Islamabad on Nov 24.

“We must remain calm, and our protest must be peaceful,” Mr Qureshi remarked as he reiterated PTI’s commitment to peaceful demonstrations in a brief interaction with his legal team.

He also expressed admiration for PTI leadership’s resilience, particularly acknowledging the efforts of Bushra Bibi, spouse of Imran Khan, and his sisters in the ongoing political struggle.

When the case pertaining to the violent attacks on General Headquarters (GHQ) on May 9, 2023, was taken up, no senior PTI leadership was present to accompany Mr Qureshi.

Judge Syed Amjad Shah marked Mr Qureshi’s attendance, while Advocate Faisal Chaudhry submitted exemption applications on behalf of other party leaders accused in the case, including Fawad Chaudhry, Shibli Faraz, and Dr Shireen Mazari.

Mr Qureshi criticised the misuse of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Maintenance of Public Order, claiming the laws were being used against PTI. He called for strengthening the judiciary, asserting that an independent judiciary was essential for democracy.

He urged PTI leaders, including Barrister Salman Akram Raja, Omar Ayub Khan and Waqas Akram, to visit detained party members in Kot Lakhpat Jail. He referred to the imprisonment of senior leaders including Dr Yasin Rashid and others and highlighted the importance of coordinating efforts with like-minded political entities to work towards a prosperous Pakistan.

The vice chairman said, with over 40 years of political experience, he offered his input to the PTI leadership, calling for unity and collaboration among all factions to strengthen democracy and governance.

Earlier, senior PTI leader and former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser made it clear that the protest call was given by Imran Khan in a bid to allay misgivings about who rules the roost in party.

It was not clear whether Mr Khan or his spouse Bushra Bibi or sisters had given the call for protest since Mr Khan’s sisters recently shared a message regarding PTI protest in Islamabad on Nov 24.

Amid the controversy, PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat, in a televised interview, claimed that party workers would not respond to protest call from Bushra Bibi or Mr Khan’s sisters but Mr Khan himself.

In a statement, Mr Qaiser said Mr Khan appealed to the entire nation to take to the streets for ‘real freedom’.

“You know that the Constitution of Pakistan has been practically suspended. Parliament and judiciary have lost their value. Currently, there is law of jungle in Pakistan. Those who have might and stick, they are having all powers,” he claimed.

The most prestigious institution i.e. parliament was “under attack” with its members being arrested, he said.

Trade with Afghanistan

He said all PTI workers along with Imran Khan must be released immediately as cases against them were nothing more than ‘political victimisation’. “Imran Khan has been kept in jail despite the fact that he has not been facing a single case in which he cannot get bail. Currently, farmers have been suffering, industry is facing closures and no one is willing to invest in the country.”

“We demand that Constitution and law should be enforced in the country. We demand that trade with Afghanistan should be restored, as people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been suffering,” he said.

On the other hand, according to PTI’s media wing, Imran Khan has issued a final call for a protest. Claiming that the current regime is “more frightening than General Musharraf’s dictatorship”, the PTI media wing urged supporters to converge in Islamabad on Nov 24 for a massive protest.
