PTI Azadi March: Govt to deploy army in Islamabad’s Red Zone, Rangers in Lahore

LAHORE: In a bid to deal with the PTI’s Azadi March and maintain the law and order situation in the country, the federal government has decided to deploy the army in Islamabad's Red Zone while the Punjab and Sindh governments have imposed Section 144, it emerged Tuesday.

The decision to ensure the safety and security of the masses came after a policeman lost his life during a raid at a PTI leader's residence. Constable Kamal Ahmad embraced martyrdom in Lahore's Model Town last night after an unidentified person opened fire on him, DIG Operations Lahore Sohail Chaudhry said.

The police launched a crackdown in Punjab cities and Karachi late on Monday ahead of the PTI's May 25 Azadi March during which several lawmakers were arrested.

Talking to journalists in Lahore, PML-N leader Atta Tarar said that the decision to impose Section 144 was made after receiving reports that armed groups will take to the streets in Lahore tomorrow. He said a police constable was martyred by the activists of the party.

Meanwhile, sources in the provincial home department said that all the roads leading to Islamabad have been blocked.

The exit and entry points in all the districts have been blocked to stop the PTI workers from holding the long march towards Islamabad.

Transport service between Punjab and Islamabad has been suspended, the sources said, adding that the transporters have been directed not to give their vehicles to the participants of the long march.

Meanwhile, the provincial government also issued directives to deploy Rangers in Lahore.

Sindh imposes Section 144
In the light of the IG Sindh’s report that some political and other disgruntled elements are planning to trigger the acts of unlawful assembly with an intent to block roads, highways and organization of sit-ins disturbing the smooth and peaceful life of a common man, the provincial government has decided to impose Section 144 for a period of 30 days.

“The government of Sindh, in the exercise of the powers conferred under Section 144 (6) Cr.PC, do herby imposes ban on assemblage/ gathering of five or more people, staging of, demonstrations and rallies throughout the province of Sindh for a period of thirty days with immediate effect,” read the notification.

Army called in for Islamabad's Red Zone
Shortly after the government’s decision to stop the 'Azadi March', the Interior Ministry decided to call in the Pakistan Army for the security of the Red Zone in Islamabad.

According to the sources, the army personnel will be stationed at the PM House, the Supreme Court and other sensitive government buildings in the area.

All security arrangements will be handed over to the army, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Section 144 has also been imposed in the federal capital for two months. According to a notification, the restrictions have been extended up to one kilometre of the Red Zone.

Govt decides to stop PTI's long march
Earlier in the day, the federal government decided to stop the PTI from holding a long march in Islamabad to ensure the safety and security of the masses.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the political committee chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during which the latest situation was reviewed amid PTI's protest call.

Federal Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah briefed the meeting about the steps taken to maintain the law and order. Federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Azam Nazeer Tarrar, Khurram Dastagir, Marriyum Aurangzeb and Riaz Pirzada also attended the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, PM Shahbaz Sharif said such tactics [Azadi March] are tantamount to damaging the economy and would affect the daily wagers as well.

During the meeting, the government decided that no compromise will be made on the state's writ and that every illegal activity will be stopped.

“The law will take its own course against any kind of violence or provocation and the Supreme Court's order regarding the sit-in will be implemented,” according to the details of the meeting.

PESHAWAR: Rejecting govt ban to stop ‘Azadi March’, former prime minister and PTI chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday said he’ll lead the biggest procession in Pakistan’s history tomorrow (Wednesday), ARY News reported.

Addressing a press conference in Peshawar, Imran Khan said the fascist government has launched a crackdown against PTI workers ahead of Azadi March. Pakistan is heading towards a decisive moment, he added.

Imran Khan said the ‘cabinet of criminals‘ have decided to stop Azadi Long March. The PTI chairman said the opposition protested several times during his government but no one was stopped nor tortured.

He condemned that the police entered the house of a retired army major, while referring to a video that surfaced on social media in which a girl is in tears and saying that the cops harassed her.

Despite several announcements of a peaceful long march toward Islamabad, a crackdown against PTI workers has been launched, the former prime minister said and asked has he violated the rule of the law during his political career of 26 years?

He asked the judiciary to take the notice of the illegal raids at the PTI workers’ houses across the country.

The nation is looking towards the judiciary in the present scenario. The PTI chairman said that no time to remain neutral now.

In case of chaos and destruction in the country, ‘neutrals’ will also be responsible, Imran Khan was quoted as saying.

Imran Khan reiterated that he will lead a long march from Peshawar tomorrow along with a massive crowd. “No one can stop the Tsumani of masses.”

Turning his cannons to Punjab CM Hamza Shahbaz, Imran Khan asked how come he is giving orders to bureaucracy after ECP de-seated the dissident Punjab MPAs.

He warned the authorities of action against every unlawful order they follow.

This is going to get very messy. The fact that the PDM are going all guns blazing in trying to stop a protest march is very telling of their mindset right now. Some very worried people in government.

Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday said that his party’s long march to Islamabad, scheduled for May 25 (tomorrow), was a test for the judiciary, bureaucracy and the “neutrals” to show whether they were with or against the “thieves” governing the country.

“It is a test for everyone, including the police,” the ousted premier told the youth while addressing them in Peshawar.

Imran further said that the nation was well aware and awake and it knew about the ‘conspiracy’, and would make the right decision.

He went on to add that the nation will never accept the subservience of “thieves” and the “imported government” at any cost, and invited people from all provinces and cities to become a part of his march.

Speaking exclusively to ARY News ahead of Azadi March, PTI chief said that he or his nation doesn’t fear repressive tactics used by the coalition government to stop them from marching to the capital.

“This (Azadi March) is not a political movement or gathering, Pakistan is facing a revolution and I have firm belief that they (the government) will not be able to stop millions of people who are marching towards Islamabad,” said PTI chief.

Imran Khan said that he received life threats before Multan rally and still has such threats but he isn’t afraid to go among his people and even the people, the nation, are now not afraid of anything in this fight to get rid of this “imported government led by crooks”.

The PTI chief made it clear that he and the marchers will not leave Islamabad till they get a final date for general elections

Imran Khan deeply criticised the incumbent government and said that this government is using tactics used by dictators against his party but he isn’t surprised for PML-N has a history of such repression against opponents.

“This cabinet (of coalition government) has 60 percent people on bail in criminal cases and their sole purpose of coming into power is to shut cases against them before polls,” said Imran Khan.

The PTI chief maintained that PM Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz Sharif were about to be indicted in a case when they took over as PM and CM.

“It was natural for them to become a part of conspiracy against my government for they knew if they don’t come to power, they are going to jail,” said the former PM.

He added that the always asks his workers and supporters to never vote for people whose assets are abroad for they are “easy to be enslaved by foreign powers”.

The PTI chief repeated his demand that the US Assistant Secretary of State for Central and South Asia Donald Lu should be sacked by US for demanding removal of an elected PM of a country.

PTI chief accuses Lu of threatening Pakistan’s former ambassador to the US, Asad Majeed, that a failure to remove Imran Khan through a no-confidence vote would have dire “consequences” for Pakistan and if he is removed, Pakistan will be forgiven.

“This guy (Donald Lu) has has no manners and should be sacked,” said the former PM.

PTI Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan on Tuesday urged the youth of the country — which he also dubbed the "attack force" — to power through all obstacles placed by the government on their way to Islamabad as part of his party's long march that is set to begin tomorrow.

Addressing the party's youth wing in Peshawar, Imran said he hoped the youth already knew its responsibilities. "Our attack force, comprising all of you, will be responsible to remove all impediments when we begin our march tomorrow," Imran told the gathering of the PTI's youth wing.

His message for the youth was in the context of the government's decision to stop the match in order to prevent "chaos and disorder". To prevent the marchers from entering the capital, hundreds of containers have been provided to Islamabad police while a ban has been imposed on gatherings under Section 144 (power to issue order absolute at once in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The PTI chief said his government had never barred the opposition from protests or rallies during its three and a half years in power, however, "they (the current government) are cracking down on our leaders and their families as if they are criminals or traitors of the country."

Imran said his march would be the test of the judiciary, police, 'neutrals' as well as the bureaucracy on "where they actually stand".

"We will see whether you support these thieves and servants of America or support the real independence of Pakistan," the ex-PM said.

He reiterated that he would lead all his party workers, leaders and participants tomorrow to Islamabad. "Whoever tries to stop this march will be swept away by the sea of people."

He told his supporters to consider the march as "jihad" and not politics. "You must prepare yourselves [in advance] as the government might suspend mobile networks and target other communication modes."

He said his struggle would continue until the marchers got an election date, assemblies were dissolved and the imported government was sent packing.

'Neutrals', judges should do 'the right thing'
Imran lashed out at the government for trying to stop the party's long march, asking the country's judiciary and 'neutrals' to "do the right thing".

He expressed these views while addressing a news conference in Peshawar earlier in the day, in which he pilloried the government and described its recent moves as "akin to what dictators do".

His speech came a day after a police crackdown on his party workers, in which a number of workers were allegedly rounded up. A policeman was also martyred the same night in an operation in Lahore. The government and the PTI blame each other for the killing.

At the outset of his press conference, Imran said that this was a "defining moment for the country" which would decide its fate. He asserted that there was no difference between the "fascist government" and the military dictators of the past, saying that both used the same tactics.

He maintained that during the PTI government's tenure, the then opposition was allowed to stage protests and long marches several times. "They marched several times with the purpose of ousting the government but did we resort to these methods?"

Imran lashed out at the government for conducting late-night raids in Lahore and for barging into the homes of innocent citizens. He questioned why the government was suddenly resorting to such tactics, calling on them to highlight any instance in the past where he had ever broken the law.

The PTI chairman said that the country was looking towards the judiciary, telling them that this was their "trial". "The country is going to look at your decisions," he said, asserting that the long march was a peaceful protest and the party's democratic right.

He went on to say that the PTI had a right to stage a protest against the "imported conspiracy". "Did we protest when Bilawal staged a long march? Did we arrest him? Fazlur Rehman also staged a march [...] we said we would help them."

Addressing the judiciary, he asked whether it would allow such harassment and raids to take place. "If you allow this, then the credibility of the judiciary will cease to exist. It would mean that there is no democracy in Pakistan."

He then addressed the country's bar associations, asking why they were not condemning the government's actions. "I want to thank the lawyers [of the country] who are standing to protect the democracy of the country. But the bar associations that are not issuing condemnations, the nation is looking at you. Are you standing with [the government]?"

He asserted that "staying neutral" was no longer an option. "You have to decide which side you are on. God has not given us permission to walk in the middle, that means that you are helping the criminals."

Addressing "those who call themselves neutral", he said that they had taken an oath to protect the country's independence and sovereignty. "You need to understand that the public is looking at you, and you will also be judged. You will be equally responsible if the country goes towards destruction."

He asserted that the only solution going forward was to conduct early elections. "There is no other solution," he said, expressing the fear that the country was headed down the path of Sri Lanka, which is currently in the throes of an economic crisis.

The government wasn't interested in serving the country and only wanted to end their corruption cases. "Therefore, I want to give a message to everyone: Neutrals and lawyers, this is a defining moment."

'Death is better than slavery'
"These people... this cabinet of thieves, 60pc of whom are out on bail and if the rest are investigated, it will be apparent what sort of cases will be on them".

"Their leaders, whose wealth is abroad, were brought in by the Americans, by a conspiracy, and after that I will accept these criminals -- I believe death is better than that.

"Death is better than slavery under them," he said emphatically. "This is why I have declared jihad."

Referring to the events of last night, he exhorted his supporters to "break the shackles of fear, for God's sake". There were 4,000 Britishers who ruled by fear over the more than 400 million people in the Subcontinent. "People were afraid," he said. "Fear makes slaves of humans."

Commenting on last night's raid at the home of retired Justice Nasira Iqbal, he said: "Her house was raided last night [...] I want to ask the neutrals and the judiciary, the scenes that you are witnessing, what kind of government can do this? Not a democratic one."

He asserted that he would lead a rally from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Islamabad tomorrow, saying that for him this was no longer about politics but was a "jihad".

Imran alleged that the current government had been brought into power by the United States because it would bend over backwards for them. "All of their assets are abroad, they are slaves [...] 400 drone attacks were carried out when Zardari and Nawaz were in government but they did not say a single word."

He called on his supporters to "leave fear behind" as the government was trying its best to intimidate the PTI. "Will we accept the government of thieves because we fear going to jail? How many people will they send to jail, do they have that many officials? They can't do it. You don't have to be scared of anything."

He gave the example of Afghanistan and praised the people for "overcoming their fear", and standing against any invading force. "No one could rule them. They have defeated superpowers. Should a nation of 220 million people accept simply because we are afraid of jail?

"I am telling you I am not concerned about my life and you are afraid of jail? How many people can they throw in jail? Tell me how many can go to jail?"

Imran said that even though the government had closed down Islamabad and Rawalpindi, his supporters should still leave their homes for the long march. "They don't have that many police officials to carry out arrests."

He also claimed that a "criminal" had been posted as the Islamabad police chief and questioned how the Punjab police force could follow the orders of Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz when cases were pending against him. "Action will be taken against the bureaucracy if you follow unlawful orders," he warned.

In his message to the youth, Imran said that the country's future was at stake. "There is no future if these leaders stay. There are two paths: one is destruction and the other is real independence," he said, reiterating that he would set out tomorrow for the long march with his caravan.

"If someone wants to stop us, do it. But no one can stop this sea of people."

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar on Tuesday asked party workers and the masses to converge at Batti Chowk in Lahore to become a part of the much-hyped “Haqeeqi Azadi March”.

"Tomorrow, everyone should join this march to exercise their constitutional and democratic right of staging a peaceful protest," Azhar said in a video posted on his official Twitter handle.

He added that the workers and the leadership of the party will gather at the said point and will then march towards Islamabad "at all costs".

Calling the incumbent rulers "cowards", he said that the tactics such as the police action were being used to scare off families.

Concluding, the PTI leader said that the march was aimed at replacing the current rulers with an elected government to restore the country's sovereignty.

Meanwhile, president of PTI’s Punjab chapter Shafqat Mahmood has claimed police and other law enforcement agencies raided more than 1,100 places in Punjab late on Monday on the directions of the incumbent government.

In a video message released from an undisclosed location, the former federal minister strongly condemned illegal actions of the "imported" government and use of police force against the party's workers and leaders.

“The government cannot succeed in stopping the PTI’s Haqeeqi Azadi March,” he maintained.

Shafqat announced that the rally will reach Islamabad through the Grand Trunk (GT) road, claiming that the government had already blocked M-2 Lahore-Islamabad Motorway by erecting hurdles and parking containers.

PTI Information Secretary Musarrat Jamshed Cheema said that the government won't be able to stop the march.

He added that the government had no power to stop 220 million of population. "Protest is a democratic right of every citizen and the PTI will use its democratic right."

The party's leader Andleeb Abbass highlighted that the government had not only closed down entry and exit points of the city, but also the main roads and arteries leading to the provincial capital.

“We wanted to protest against the arrests of PTI workers at Lalik Jan Chowk but heavy police contingents have been deployed there. We won't be scared off by the highhandedness of the government,” she said.

Other leaders of the party hold the stance that the actions and arrests had helped to raise the enthusiasm of workers and public at large who believe that a foreign conspiracy was hatched in the country for the change of regime.

The police raids and arrests, they say, have unleashed the true face of the "false and fascist government illegally imposed in the country."

Besides condemnations and approaching the court of law for release of party workers, the PTI has issued a list of his district lawyers’ teams along with their contact details and asked party workers to approach them in case of any difficulty.

The party has also floated a web form link to contact details of arrested party workers to provide them legal assistance as the Haqeeqi Azadi March has entered in its final phase.

This is a gamechanger in Pakistans history. Imo the Army will back down and go against the new puppets. Sure the general wants to please his American masters who have these imported crooks on a string but he also knows the people of Pakistan have the real power. I imagine some sort of infighting in the services of Pakistan to take course very soon inc the police etc.

Tomorrow could be the battle for Haqiqi azaadi. Pakistan may be about to rid itself of corrupt politicians, judges and generals and set itself on the path of prosperity.

The Supreme Court (SC) will be taking up on Wednesday (today) a hurriedly-moved petition seeking removal of roadblocks and barricades and ensuring free movement of residents of the federal capital by restraining authorities from taking any unconstitutional step.

On the other hand, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday advised the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) to follow the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court for holding the long march.

Headed by Justice Ijazul Ahsan and consisting of Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, the SC bench will hear the petition instituted by Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) President Mohammad Shoaib Shaheen on Tuesday.

Against the backdrop of PTI’s ‘Azadi’ March, which is reaching Islamabad on May 25, the petition sought a direction against interior secretary as well as home secretaries of the four provinces to remove hurdles erected on different highways that restricted the movement of citizens and restrain state agencies and institutions from harassing people and taking any unconstitutional and illegal step.

IHC asks PTI to follow apex court’s guidelines for holding long march

The petition was moved under Article 184(3) of the Constitution after Shoaib Shaheen invited the attention of Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial during a routine hearing in courtroom no. 1 towards difficulties being faced by citizens due to roadblocks as well as police raids on residences of lawyers.

At this the court observed that it could not allow anyone to logjam the city and suggested the counsel to move a petition since the court could not initiate suo motu notice on its own for which it had developed certain guidelines.

The petition was then moved which highlighted that the roads and highways were being blocked by different state institutions or executive authorities making it difficult for senior counsel and advocates to reach the courts and also hindered the movement of citizens, ambulances and doctors.

The petitioner contended that freedom of movement was the fundamental right of every citizen and all executive authorities, state agencies and institutions were bound to abide by the Constitution.

It further said that protesters or participants of the PTI-led ‘Azadi’ March were also bound not to disturb or violate the fundamental rights of other citizens and abide by the provisions of the Constitution and law.

The petition highlighted how it had been reported in the press and electronic media that citizens, including the advocates, parliamentarians and suspected protesters as well as workers of a particular political party, were being arrested and harassed without any reasonable and lawful justification in violation of their fundamental rights, which was illegal, unlawful and contrary to the Constitution.

PTI told to follow SC guidelines
The IHC on Tuesday advised the PTI to follow the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court for holding the long march and also instructed the relevant authorities to do the same to regulate political gatherings in Islamabad.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah did not accept the PTI’s request of passing a blanket order against the arrest of its leadership and activists, however, issued directions that they may not be harassed.

PTI’s additional general secretary Amir Mehmood Kiani had filed a petition before the IHC against the alleged harassment of its workers and sought assurance that they would not be arrested.

Barrister Syed Ali Zafar, appearing on behalf of the petitioner, argued that the government had started a crackdown on PTI activists and was trying to deprive them of their lawful right to assemble and register a peaceful protest.

Justice Minallah remarked that the court could not issue a blanket order against the arrest as it would be tantamount to interference in the executive’s domain.

He, however, asked the government not to harass political workers.

The court also instructed the deputy commissioner and inspector general of police not to harass and deprive citizens of their rights and directed that a sketch prepared to regulate the gathering in the light of the SC directions be submitted.

The court issued notices to the district administration and inspector general of police Islamabad and adjourned further hearing till May 27.

ISLAMABAD: The local administration in Islamabad has refused to allow Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) long march to enter Islamabad while justifying it with a decision given by the Islamabad High Court (IHC), ARY NEWS reported.

According to sources, the district administration responded to the PTI’s request to allow their long march in Islamabad, saying that they could not allow the gathering at the place identified by the party.

“The place identified between sectors G-9 and H-9 is not suitable for the public gathering as larger number of people could not be accommodated at the venue,” they said while citing the letter sent from the Islamabad administration.

It further said that allowing the long march at the venue could further stop ways leading towards major thoroughfares and the airport. “We cannot allow rally at this place after a directive from Islamabad High Court,” the administration said while rejecting the request.

Previously, the federal government has devised a strict security plan to deal with the marchers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) during Islamabad’s long march on May 25.

Under the strict security plan, 22,000 security officials will be deployed, whereas, the Islamabad administration summoned additional contingents from other provinces.

More than 2,000 Frontier Constabulary personnel were summoned by the Islamabad administration, whereas, the authorities sought the deployment of 8,000 Punjab Constabulary officials and 2,000 Anti-Riot personnel to deal with the PTI protestors.

The Sindh government has been asked to send 2,000 police officials to the federal capital. 500 women cops were also deployed and 4,000 Rangers personnel were also summoned.

Sources told ARY News that 100 prison vans will be summoned to Islamabad from other provinces. The contingents of the security personnel were summoned along with the complete command system from all provinces.

Massive numbers from across the country. This is the journey and destination is Islamabad where everyone will assemble and there you'd be able to gauge the size of this revolution. Its possible that the crowd will reach Islamabad tonight, tomorrow or in 2/3 days given restrictions but its likely they will reach Islamabad given the size of the turnout.

Things are getting ugly. Police are using excessive force here. They are not looking if there are women involved or kids/elders involved. They are really using baton force, tear gas, rubber bullets across all. This is our police shelling us. Are we living in occupied lands?

With the day of PTI's Azadi March here, tensions in Punjab rose on Wednesday after videos of police shelling PTI marchers on the Bati and Bhatti chowks of Lahore emerged on television and social media as workers attempted to remove the shipping containers between them and Islamabad.

It came after PTI chairman Imran Khan exhorted his supporters yesterday to embark on their march for "true freedom" towards Islamabad, just a day after the government said it would not allow the march. In response, Imran called on the youth to remove the obstacles themselves.

Imran Khan had arrived at the Wali Interchange in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by helicopter. Footage of Imran arriving at the interchange showed PTI activists converging on the chopper.

Imran Khan, later, departed for Islamabad from the Wali Interchange in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Afterwards, PTI tweeted a photo of Imran waving to supporters from a truck adorned with PTI colours.

Other party leaders departed from their respective locations, with Hammad Azhar, Yasmin Rashid and some others from Lahore, while Shahid Khattak departed from Karak. PTI's Fayyazul Hasan Chohan could be seen on television footage departing for Islamabad on a a motorcycle.

As the events unfold and PTI activists defy Section 144 — a measure which is frequently used to prevent gatherings — Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah is set to address a news conference. A day earlier Section 144 was invoked in Islamabad, Punjab and Sindh.

Attempts to nab Hammad Azhar in Lahore
DawnNewsTV reported that police attempted to arrest Hammad Azhar in Lahore. Footage showed scuffles between supporters and police as they tried to arrest Azhar, who could be seen wearing a red cap in footage broadcast on TV.

After 1:50pm, the police resumed shelling and fired tear gas near the Aiwan-e-Adal. Four lawyers have also been arrested, while 10 to 12 cars were reportedly damaged.

Earlier, footage emerged of police personnel charging at marchers at Lahore's Bati chowk. Ten people were arrested after clashes.

Dawn.com has seen footage depicting clashes and scuffles between the protesters and the policemen as activists converged in the area to begin their march on Islamabad. The videos showed policemen st

According to PTI's official Twitter account, the marchers were also stopped at the Shahdara area.

In a later tweet, the party said the shipping container placed in Shahadara had been removed.

At the Niazi Chowk too, PTI workers removed impediments and marched forward.

Meanwhile, another PTI caravan led by Hammad Azhar managed to get across the obstacles and crossed Lahore. He is now on GT Road on his way to Islamabad.

From Lahore, Azhar said, the impediments and containers on Bati Chowk, Ravi Bridge and Shahdra have been removed and the roads have been cleared by "the public".

Later, Azhar's said Kala Shah Kaku, some 11km north of Ravi Bridge, was under "heavy shelling".

Azhar's rally has reached Muridke, meanwhile the caravan led by Shafqat Mahmood is yet to cross the Bati chowk.

In Lahore, the police also baton-charged the protesters near the Aiwan-e-Adal. The marchers were, however, later dispersed. Clashes between the police and protesters were also reported in other areas of Lahore such as Islampura, Karim Park, Mohni road and Badami Bagh.

Yasmin Rashid's car comes under attack
Separately, Dawn.com has seen footage showing police stopping leader Yasmin Rashid's vehicle in Lahore. An exchange of words could also be seen after police reportedly attempted to yank out the key of the vehicle she was travelling in.

Video aired by broadcasters showed police landing blows on a vehicle — purportedly Rashid's — as it tried to pass through a cordon. A non-uniformed individual with his face covered could also be seen in the footage, hitting the vehicle forcefully.

Rashid in a statement, said the windshield of her vehicle was broken by the police. She said that she faced difficulty in leaving the area, but was now on the way to Islamabad. "This government has lost its senses. I am an 80-year-old woman. Why are they threatened of me? How is stopping a peaceful protest democratic?"

Rashid, who is a cancer survivor, added that despite everything, the enthusiasm of the workers was better than ever.

Later, the PTI tweeted a video of the vehicle with the broken with Rashid inside it.

In Lahore, the marchers had reached the Ravi Road interchange, some 362 kilometres from Islamabad.

DawnNewsTV has reported roadblocks in Faisalabad, Gujranwala and other cities in Punjab.

Gujranwala
Meanwhile, a faceoff was reported between PTI supporters and the police in Gujranwala when the latter tried to stop them with barricades near Khanki Headworks. However, the marchers forced their way through the obstructions and move ahead.

The caravan, led by Chaudhry Ahmed Chatha, is now on the way to Islamabad.

According to PTI's Gujranwala General Secretary, Tariq Gujjar, 150 people from the caravan have been taken into custody.

Ali Asjad Malhi arrested in Daska
On the other, from Daska, PTI district president Ali Asjad Malhi left with supporters in a caravan.

Earlier, the police raided the house of Malhi, where the party leaders had gathered, and tried to arrest him under Section 144. Later DawnNewsTV reported Malhi has been arrested.

Faisalabad
PTI supporters and the police also clashed at the Kamalpur Interchange in Faisalabad. The marchers, however, advanced after breaking through the wall of the Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA).

The police office also tried to stop the party workers near the motorway after which a scuffle broke out between both groups.

Other cities
Aside from Gujranwala, Sadhoke, Chanab Bridge, Khanki Headway and the city area have been completely blocked.

At 1:32pm, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry tweeted that after shelling marchers, a shot has been fired on them in Mangla — a village situated on the border of Kashmir and Jhelum — some 120kms from Islamabad.

Earlier, the former information minister had said that the Mangla bridge was blocked by the police.

Islamabad
Police have blocked the Niazi Chowk in Bani Gala, a few kilometres away from Imran Khan's residence, DawnNewsTV reported. The Islamabad police have established a checkpost there, while approximately 2,000 Punjab police officers have been posted.

Karachi
Meanwhile, PTI supporters in Karachi have started gathering near the Numaish Chowrangi to "register their demand for immediate, free & fair elections".

"Karachi is about to make its own Azadi Square as Kaptaan's caravan and other rallies head towards Islamabad," PTI tweeted.

Earlier, the Karachi traffic police said that the MA Jinnah Road from Capri Cinema towards Numaish Chowrangi had been blocked over "security reasons". Corridor 3 has also been closed for traffic from the PPP Chowrangi.

Imran inbound
PTI's central secretary information Farrukh Habib, meanwhile, tweeted that former prime minister Imran Khan was reaching the Wali motorway interchange at Mardan. "He will lead PTI's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa convoy leading million to Islamabad," he said.

Ahead of Imran's departure, he called on all of Pakistan to join his freedom march. He also released a video statement in which he said that he is starting his march from Peshawar and reaching Wali Interchange. He urged his supporters to reach Islamabad.

"I will lead the Azadi March caravan from there and God willing we will head to Islamabad from there. I want each and everyone to leave because this is a defining moment," he added.

Can't say yet. Loads of small rallies from what I have seen, all coming to central locations and then eventually Islamabad.

Let's see how it develops.

In progress - some frightening stuff

Kashmir vibes from these good for nothing cops.

On a side note, these people shouldn't have brought their kids with them.

Someone of her age going through this torment can have health and wellbeing related issues. The use of force against unarmed civilians is just uncalled for.

This is how politicians that actually care about Pakistan are treated in this country.

I have heard that some overseas Pakistanis have also come to Pakistan to participate in this circus.

It will be a funny sight to see then wave Pakistan flags while carrying foreign passports in their pockets. :)))

The number of people attending this circus is directly proportional to the level of joblessness in the country.

It is shameful to see unproductive youth attending this circus just because they don’t have jobs. If they did, they wouldn’t have time for this.

So Imran and his party should be feel ashamed for letting them down. They ran the country for 3.5 years and achieved nothing. Why do they want to be in power again? They had their shot and they blew it.

PTI is known as burger party for a reason. These elitist kids flaunt their father’s money and attend these jalsas for entertainment. They don’t know the first thing about politics & they don’t care that PTI destroyed the economy. They live in a bubble of their own.

RAWALPINDI/LAHORE:
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf workers and supporters are attempting to make their way towards Islamabad as they pushed aside containers and braved tear gas shelling after answering chairman Imran Khan’s call for a long march onto the federal capital.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan denied rumours of a deal with the government and said "absolutely not" to any such prospects. He added the party leadership was not moving toward the federal capital.

"We will remain in Islamabad till the announcement of dates for dissolution of assemblies and elections are given." He further urged the people of the twin cities to join PTI's march.

Imran earlier arrived at Wali interchange in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and later left for Islamabad. Other party leaders departed for the federal capital from their respective areas.

Speaking to charged party supporters in Swabi, he told his supporters that they will go to Islamabad's D-Chowk and "no one can stop us".

Police in Lahore and workers of PTI clashed earlier in the morning as the latter managed to push their way through the containers deployed at Batti Chowk by the government to stop the protesters from reaching Islamabad.

Law enforcers resorted to tear gas after PTI supporters tried to remove the containers placed on the routes exiting Lahore. PTI leaders Yasmin Rashid, Hammad Azhar, and Shafqat Mehmood were leading the workers. The party supporters, resultantly, hurled stones at the police.

At least 12 workers of the PTI were taken into custody by the police after the clashes. Former Punjab health minister Yasmin Rashid was also stopped briefly by local law enforcement, with the party claiming that the police tried to "snatch her car keys". A video of the incident shared on social media showed a purported PTI supporter resisting the arrest of the former minister.

Rashid in a statement, also said the windshield of her vehicle was broken by police. She said that she faced difficulty in leaving the area, but is now on her way to Islamabad.

"This government has lost its senses. I am an 80-year-old woman. Why are they threatened of me? How is stopping a peaceful protest democratic?"

Rashid added that despite everything, the enthusiasm of the workers was better than ever.

The former health minister was later briefly detained along with senior party Andalib Abbas in the area of Ravi road while they were taking refuge in a camp. Both PTI leaders chanted slogans against the government during the arrest and were later released.

In a tweet, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz alleged that the Punjab police had recovered weapons from the vehicles of PTI Lahore office-bearers Zubair Niazi and Bajash Niazi.

She shared the pictures of the cache recovered and said, “This is the ugly face of the so-called long march. These are the intentions.”

According to the firebrand PML-N leader, the police have registered a case against the PTI members.

Commuters in the twin cities and the areas surrounding Islamabad faced hardship and traffic congestion as the incumbent government blocked multiple roads with containers and other barricades in an attempt to curtail the advance of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf's long march on the federal capital.

All routes from Rawalpindi to Islamabad were sealed with containers and routes leading from Rawat Chowk to Islamabad Expressway were closed. Routes on Murree Road were also after various containers were placed.

The Faizabad area was completely sealed from the Express Highway, IJP Road and Murree Road and commuters going to Islamabad faced severe difficulties.

A heavy contingent of Rawalpindi police was also deployed around the blockades.

The Metro bus service and public transport were shut down in Rawalpindi, as were educational institutions, shopping malls and bus stands.

Containers also sealed both sides of the Rawalpindi Sawan Bridge while Rawalpindi to GT road was closed from the seventh bridge.

Read ‘Azadi March’: PTI workers asked to converge at Lahore’s Batti Chowk

Simultaneously, in Lahore, a large contingent of police was deployed at Niazi Chowk and at the Ravi bridge. Lahore GT Road was also closed with the use of containers and police personnel stopped dozens of trucks on the road. The blockades have resulted in massive traffic jams near Babu Sabu Motorway Interchange in the provincial capital.

The incumbent coalition government on Tuesday decided to bar the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf from holding its ‘Azadi March’ to the capital on May 25 (today), raising the alarm that if the “bloody march” is not nipped in the bud, it would “put the survival of the nation at risk”.

In order to pre-empt the anticipated “chaos and disorder”, the government has further imposed a ban on gatherings under Section 144 (power to issue order absolute at once in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The decision to quell the PTI agitation comes amid the government’s anxious measures to shield itself with thousands of security personnel who rolled into the federal capital a day earlier and a slew of arrests and raids on the homes of party leaders. The government has virtually encircled itself with a moat to insulate itself from the marchers.

Today is a working day - how come so many young, able-bodied people are able to attend this circus? It is clear that they are unemployed.

I wonder why they were unable to take advantage of the 5.5 million jobs PTI was able to create.

After several hours of political drama and chaos across Pakistan in the wake of PTI’s much-anticipated ‘Azadi March’, the federal government and PTI have both refuted claims of striking an agreement.

Following the directions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the two sides engaged in dialogue; however, no breakthrough was reported between the two. According to Geo News, the talks between the government and PTI continued for two-and-half hours.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed that no agreement has been reached between the federal government and PTI. She said news of negotiations and an agreement between the government and PTI is "baseless"

Meanwhile, Senator Faisal Javed also confirmed that no agreement has been reached.

Political tensions are at an all-time high in Pakistan with all eyes on Islamabad as the city braced itself for the arrival of PTI workers and leaders heading towards the federal capital for the party’s Azadi March despite the government's instructions not to.

So far, the day has been filled with political drama. Lahore turned into a battleground as multiple scuffles took place between the police and PTI marchers as the latter tried to wriggle out of the barricades placed on their way.

Law enforcement was on high alert and the government has given instructions to take “all possible measures” to stop the PTI's ‘Azadi March’. PTI Chairman Imran Khan is leading the march, which he has said will be the “biggest” in Pakistan’s political history, while Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah will address the public shortly over the ongoing situation.

I find it appalling that we have posters here justifying unreal attack on their fellow citizen for protesting in their legal right. Shameless. Call spade a spade anyone going through torment has the same blood as rest of Pakistani. I guess PTI's blood is ordinary and we have posters here who would rather prefer royal blood ruling over us as slaves.

But posters you see supporting PDM on here have themselves spilled the beans that their families personally benefit/benefitted from PPP/PML-N rule in the past. Can't go against the hand that feeds you.

Mark words. This march will turn into revolution. No two thoughts about it. I repeat this would be gigantic revolution coming together over the weekend.

Ok, let's say what you say is true that the common man isn't appending PTIs march and the march's overall numbers are insignificant, in that case, why is PDM trying to stop this march via undemocratic and fascist methods? The police started attacking and arresting people even before the march began. Why did they do all of this if the march is irrelevant?

PDM has cut off KPK from the rest of Pakistan in order to stop this march. They've cut off the internet and gas stations in certain parts of Pakistan and police officers are pointing guns at peaceful protesters. Is KPK not a part of Pakistan anymore because the people there support Imran Khan?

You don't have to support everything PDM does blindly. Think objectively about what's happening right now.

As these videos flood social media, as these stories spread especially ones of the old and the women who have been hurt the reaction will be fierce.

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Wednesday criticised the PTI's "Azadi March" and said that even the government bought Imran Khan's "lies" of leading a march with two million people toward Islamabad.

The interior minister, while speaking during a press conference in Islamabad alongside Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, said that Khan was leading the march with around five to six thousand people only against his claim of holding the biggest gathering in Pakistan.

The PML-N leader said that the government should not have made preparations on such a big scale if it knew that the march will only have a few attendees.

"We stopped the metro operations, the examinations were postponed, people faced trouble commuting, and the patients faced issues as well," he added.

Sanaullah said that he apologises to the people on behalf of the government for troubling them and maintained that the PTI portrayed a picture of a huge crowd marching towards the capital. "Only people from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa attended the march," the interior minister claimed.

Talking about Punjab's situation, the minister said that the situation in the province has settled down and there is "complete peace at the moment."

He expressed his happiness and said that the people of Punjab are not a part of this "fitna" adding "may Allah guide those who attended the march.

Sanaullah added that the people in Balochistan do not even know about this "fasad", while people in Sindh have refused to be a part of it.

"Only a few thousand people are a part of the march and they are in possession of weapons and teargas. They are trying to overtake the federal capital while using government protocol," he added.

He went on to say that the PTI chairman wants to "instigate" a civil war. Calling the march an "unconstitutional act", the PML-N leader said that the PTI will have to face the consequences.

He maintained that people preferred to stay at home rather than attend the march. "People want the nation to move forward," he said, thanking the media for playing a positive role in the ongoing situation.

The minister said that the Supreme Court has directed to "form a negotiating team between the government and the PTI", and added that the PTI has formed a four-member committee and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed a team.

"The party can hold public meetings, however, the violations of the law cannot be tolerated," he added.

Hammad Azhar has been hit by direct shelling by the police. His injury seems minor but the worrisome part is that the police are now directly aiming at protestors. This is indefensible.

The use of state police to harass your political opponents is an obvious abuse of state resources by the PDM, they must be eliminated as they are clearly a hazard to this country's security. I hope Imran Khan ends PDM and its members once and for all.

If you are talking about 3g and 4g phone network, that is always shut down whenever there is a protest. That is done due to safety and security reasons so that a bomb blast doesnt take ppace or some terrorist activity. This happens every time when large number of people gather.

Internet specifically hasnt been shut, thus stop lieing while sitting abroad
