I remember watching this vid a while back- at the time he was 12...but look at the shots- scintilating.

http://youtu.be/RnUIIi5PmOc

Interesting that he has made it to NZ U-19. Looks a good prospect.

He is younger than me and I can tell what he would have gone through if he was on PP

Kid scored a century today against test class West indian attack of Roach,Gabriel and Josheph.
One to watch out for future.

New zealand only lost 3 wickets against west indies attack !

Absolute useless game - waste of time, money and energy; these figures don't go to players' stats and it has absolutely no significance of things to happen. 3 day games where 14 plays, 11 bats and fields at a time (probably all 11 bowls as well) is as rubbish as it comes. It's better to play inter squad 7 a side game (with 11 fielders) than these sort of jokes - that'll help 12 batsmen to bat long and 10 bowlers to bowl seriously.

Ravindra is a good batsman though, might debut this season of 4 Tests.

West indies had a decent attack in this game gabriel,Joseph, holder, holder, cornwell but I get were you come from the intensity isnt going to be the same.nice to see New Zealand depth thou

I think we'll see a day when every SENA team is at least half filled with south asians.

Add ireland, scotland, zimbabwe to the list as well.

New Zealand will almost certainly go that way. Australia I don’t see that much integration despite growing indian population. Ireland, Canada, Scotland etc will always half half desis I think.

He's almost a lock to play for NZ, just a matter of time. He's been performing, from his lot of U19 players it was him and Finn but Finn Allen seems pretty inconsistent.

Nah, probably next year. Seems too early.

Batsmen of Indian origin are almost always good. He should have a successful Test career.

It was New Zealand A's turn to put in some hours at the batting crease today and, before bad light interrupted proceedings just after 5PM, three batsmen had reached half centuries.

Overnight batsman Rachin Ravindra got there first with a 98-ball effort at the top while fellow opener Henry Cooper contributed 41 to their century-stand for the first wicket - before Ravindra was trapped on 52 by spinner Rahkeem Cornwall.

Cooper followed just 10 overs later, stopped on 54 after having been trapped by Chemar Holder: 100/1 now 130/2.

Holder struck again to bring a quick wicket in number four batsman Joe Carter, but Will Young had begun to settle in and kept the momentum going for the side for the rest of the afternoon, unbeaten after a patient 80 when bad light ended play.

The Test squad batsman collected his 5000th first-class run in the process, New Zealand A 249 for four in reply as they trail the West Indies by 322 on the first innings, heading into the third day.

He is a really good batsman. A shame he has to play down the order in this ODI team.

I completely forgot that he was a batsman. He looks a decent FC batter.

As a bowler he was quite unimpressive.

NZ don't really play enough tests for him to be a test specialist so he will probbaly become a loi bits and pieces cricketer.

He's a top order batsmen playing down the order in a position where he usually has to come in and hit. He's a class batsmen who will be the backbone of our batting for the next decade.

He's 23 years old and couldn't get a shot up the order in a random odi series that had some senior players missing.

He certainly looks a solid FC/potential test bat but if he is so good why are they burying him down the order in LOIS?

Because there's plenty of competition already there and it's WC year, he wont be playing in the top order for the WC. This way they're blooding him into the team and not putting too much pressure on him. Kane and Kohli were brought in down the order as well. Maybe after the WC they'll give him chances up the order as is they have too many top order batsmen ahead of him atm.

Saved a test match along with AJaz patel by playing out 10 overs against Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axa on day 5.

Thanks for the info.

Hopefully he has a long and fruitful career.

Several Indian origin players including the likes of Ish Sodhi, Jeet Raval and Jeetan Patel have represented the New Zealand men’s national cricket team over the years. Rachin Ravindra was one of the two new faces along with Devon Conway, New Zealand had added to their Test squad for the Test series against England followed by the ICC World Test Championship final against India in 2021.

Since making his first-class debut, Rachin Ravindra has been making headlines with his run-scoring spree. Ravindra has appeared in all three formats for New Zealand. New Zealand's provisional squad for the ODI World Cup with allrounder Rachin Ravindra earning a spot as an additional spin option.

Rachin Ravindra is an absolute superstar in the making.

This is an absolute belter of a pitch. We cannot judge anyone based on 1 inning here. However, he seems to have matured a bit. Not throwing his wicket away is the improvement I see.

Rachin opened innings for New Zealand against Pakistan in World Cup warm up match. He is playing our pace batteries so comfortably. Currently he is 88 not out.

Rachin Ravindra dismissed. He has scored 97 off 72 balls. A beautiful innings has come to an end.

So what do NZ do if Williamson comes in at 3? Should they open with him? Or is he playing so well at 3 that Williamson should open?

He's useless right? :)))

Saw some people on here calling him a useless bat. Egg on face.

Elite stuff from Rachin. Good to watch as well. Ferguson's injury was a blessing in disguise for him

on course to take over from Khawaja as the best south Asian heritage batsmen to represent SENA

His dad is an old school Bangalorean. Apparently was watching World Cup 2019 in a pub in Bangalore.

Supporting this good brother to smash every team except us in the World Cup and afterwards.

Props to OP for the foresight. That too 7 years ago. Such an obscure prospect at the time considering thread wasn’t even started by a kiwi.

Good on Rachin though. Is it really true that his dad couldn’t decide between Rahul and Sachin based on reports here and there?

What a way to announce yourself, that too in a WC. All the best.

New Zealand cricket has a new star in the shape of all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, after the 23-year-old lit up the opening game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Four years ago, Ravindra was glued to a TV while on a youth cricket tour of India, watching his country slip to the narrowest of defeats in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 final against England.

Four years on, Ravindra is back in India, but this time it is the emerging all-rounder who was the star on show, obliterating England with a stunning century in the opening match of the 2023 edition of the tournament.

It was a particularly special moment to break through onto the world stage for a New Zealander born to Indian parents.

“I think a hundred is always special, but I guess in terms of being able to perform in India, it's cool to have the Indian roots. It was nice to have my parents there watching - they flew over from New Zealand," Ravindra said.

“It’s cool to have that moment and obviously it's always nice coming to India. I have a sense of family connection whenever I'm in Bangalore, being able to see my grandparents and stuff, it's pretty cool.”

If you think Ravindra’s first name sounds familiar, it’s because he was named by his cricket-loving parents after two of the great Indian batters – Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.

“I think those two (Dravid and Tendulkar) are pretty special cricketers. I've heard a lot of stories and watched a lot of footage and I guess the influence from my parents and my dad and the old-school Indian cricketers was pretty cool," Ravindra said.

“Obviously, I idolised Sachin Tendulkar. I think a lot of people did. I think the way he batted and his technique was beautiful to watch. I guess being a lefty, there's guys you look at: I love Lara, I love Sangakkara, just the usual gun left-handers; but Tendulkar was definitely the idol."

Ravindra’s blistering 123* came from just 96 deliveries, featured five sixes and 11 fours, and broke the spirit of England’s struggling bowling attack.

It was also the first time that the youngster had played in the top three in a full ODI for New Zealand, boosted up the order after impressing in the warm-up matches as a stand-in opener.

“I think I'm pretty lucky that I was able to get the chance to bat at three. I've opened the batting for my domestic team... so it’s somewhere I'm familiar batting, and I really enjoy batting at the top too," Ravindra said.

Whether or not Ravindra continues in the top three once Kane Williamson is fit to return remains to be seen, but he has made the strongest of cases and will be aided by his all-rounder status.

The spinner sent down a full set of 10 overs against England, but wasn’t too happy with his relatively expensive figures of 1/76.

“Obviously the sort of player I am, I want to be a genuine all-rounder and hopefully continue being a genuine all-rounder in the future. But I'm just happy with whatever labels put on," Ravindra said.

“It probably didn't come out as well as I would have wanted today, but look, that's the beauty of cricket. I think some days you have great days, some days you don't. So, we'll look at it and review it and hopefully go back again next game.”

The youngster’s attacking intent with the bat was critical to New Zealand’s powerplay blitz, putting his team well ahead of the run-rate and limiting the potential of England’s three-pronged spin attack through the middle overs.

After Chris Woakes and Mark Wood took the early punishment, the runs kept on flowing for the Kiwis.

“We played against him recently and he got some runs at Lord’s and played really well,” opposing captain Jos Buttler said after being on the receiving end of Ravindra’s brilliance.

“Obviously in the warm-up game at Hyderabad, I think he opened the batting and played really well as well.

“I think the two guys, if I look back, it wasn't like they were playing outrageous shots or scooping it over the keeper's head. They played excellent cricket shots and got fantastic value on that pitch. The margin felt very small for the bowlers and if you're a little bit off, they put you away.

"I thought those two played really, really well and put together obviously a quite incredible partnership.”

Ravindra’s unbroken stand of 273 runs with Devon Conway is New Zealand’s highest ever at a global tournament, while his first international century is also his country’s fastest in men’s ODIs, coming off 82 balls and breaking the record that Conway had set earlier in this same match.

“The best thing was they played good cricket shots, which was the most pleasing thing,” New Zealand skipper Tom Latham said.

“They just reacted to what was being bowled, but it certainly wasn’t a plan to come out and play that way.

“He (Ravindra) played a fantastic innings and we’re super proud of him and the way he’s come out. It’s his first ODI in that position and we’re looking forward to getting around him tonight.”

His batting was an absolute delight to watch. It's one thing to score a century but to showcase the kind of strokeplay he did, really gives the confidence that this guy is a very special talent.

And against a top-class bowling attack.

Rachin had made his presence felt. What a start to his World Cup campaign. 100 in no time against a quality side.

Really impressed by him. He plays at a high strike rate without having to try to slog every ball - he was playing some legitimately class shots along with some of that modern confidence that batsmen have nowadays. One player to watch this tournament. It is a good problem to have, but who do you think they will drop when Kane Williamson returns?

Very rarely am I immediately impressed by a player.

To show that much ability in your first World Cup match against the defending champs, carry it through to a century plus and do it at an excellent strike rate - what is there not to like?

Do you guys wish he played for India? He is such an upgrade over overrated kohli and old rohit.
Naah mate we aint Kiwis or English, not in the trade of preferring imports over our home grown lads....

Conway
Williamson
Ravindra
Mitchell

Philips
Neesham
Santner
Henry
Boult
Ferguson

Perfect sid for NZ once Williamson is back.

Likely going to end up player of the tournament. Amazing achievement for his age and experience.

Came into this WC with an absolute garbage record. I questioned his repeated selection because he never really came good in any games he’d played over the past two years.

And boy, what a time to finally come good.

Very happy for him but greatly surprised.
