[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Ravichandran Ashwin announces retirement from international cricket [Update@ Post# 1376]

He is definitely the best spin bowler from India after Kumble. But I think Ashwin's contributions are way more than Kumble's.
Kumble has a questionable record in a number of countries. But alot of that has to do with the sheer volume of overs he used to bowl. He has a big role in India's 2007 series win in England though.

Ravi Ashwin said after India trounced Bangladesh by seven wickets in the 2nd Test:

"Does it help a player if you have just a few Test centres? Most certainly it does."

"Because when we go to Australia, they play India only at five Test centres. They don't play us in Canberra. They don't play us at any of the other venues where they won't be very familiar with the conditions. So do England. They have select Test centres and that's where they play. Some of those are only white-ball centres. Can we do it here (in India)? That's above my pay grade. I cannot comment on that."

"Firstly, what are the benefits that Indian cricketers attain by having so many Test centers are, you have got cricketers who come and play Test cricket from every nook and corner of this country."

"It is a huge country and it has triggered that sort of urgency and that sort of passion amongst cricketers to be able to come and play for this country. That is a big positive."

"The second of it is there are certain requisite ingredients that go into making a Test match happen. Like, for the weather and the kind of drainage that we need to be able to invest on. These are no-brainers," he said, making it clear that there should not be any compromise on required facilities."

"I would say both of them are in the native days or the formative years of playing Test Cricket but I do see that there will be the future pillars and overseas shores that they're going to encounter shortly will also enhance and enrich their experience going forward in their wonderful Test journey. They both are special, we all know that."

"We know how Yashasvi is going to play but Rohit walked out and just tonked the first ball for six. So when you walk the talk, obviously the dressing room doesn't have any other choice but to follow that same pattern. We have 50 runs out of 3 overs."

A poster was asking if he will be among the top 10 in india.

11 MOS in 39 test series. Murali played 60 series for that.

Ashwin is surely among the top 10 players produced by India. I would say it will be hard to name 10 better test cricketer in Asia, let alone in India. Winning MOS in every 2-3 series is just top class.

He’s a strong contender for a Top 10 spot now in Bharat.

And brother you can call my name, it’s alright. I respect you.

I watched the lastest interview of Ravi Ashwin, he was talking about babar captaincy also where he said PCB did mistake by removing Shaheen for captaincy just after a series. He rate saim , Abdullah etc very High in test formats .

About Pakistan spinners he said pakistan dont have any quality spinner currently.

Zahid has the same height look and carrom ball as ashwin but looks a shadow of the bowler
Hopefully zahid become even half the bowler

Took 3 wickets so far against New Zealand in the 2nd test of the series. What a bowler he is.

Bumrah and Ashwin are top notch bowlers from this era for India.

Jadeja is #3 and Shami is #4. In white ball, Bumrah and Shami are top 2.

One of the biggest frauds in Test history. Not even a top 30 spinner of all time on a level-playing field.

Top 5 bowlers to debut in this millennium:-

Dale Steyn
Pat Cummins
Jasprit Bumrah
KG Rabada
Ravichandran Ashwin

Anderson misses out due to poor away record despite being a pacer in South Africa and Australia and also being a tailender with bat.

Ravichandran Ashwin says he has figured out ways to tackle Australian batting mainstay Steve Smith in the upcoming five-match Test series. he said:

"Steve Smith is especially fascinating as a player against spin. He has a unique technique, even playing fast bowling,"

"But with spin, I think he came in with sound game plans and sound preparations, and yeah, he used to execute it come what may. And over the years, I've found ways and means to break it down."

"His time at Delhi Capitals, his time at RPSG, all these net sessions that I've seen him go about his business gave me an insight as to how he prepares and what he likes and doesn't like."

"He's a very thinking cricketer as well. He wants to get one up on you all the time. But, he's got unique ways of practising and battling out with you in the middle."

"And sometimes, as a bowler, when you're watching a batter go through his process, you do identify whether you have him or not. And several times in these years of having played with Steve Smith, I've felt he has me."

"But several times, much later, when I think I've figured out what he does or how he bats, I've had an edge over him. I've had the wood over him."

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly during interview with local sports media outlet:

"There is no debate. Ashwin must play. Your best spinner must play. In Test cricket, play specialists. Also, against the number of left-handers in the Australian line-up, Ashwin is certain to have an impact."

"Yes, there is [Ravindra] Jadeja and Washington [Sundar] and both bat well, but you must go in with your best spinner in the first Test. Play with specialist batsmen and bowlers, and that's where Ashwin is my choice."

Ashwin has wood over Australia. But i doubt they will play him as his batting has regressed. They will play Jadeja for sure.

Close your mouth ganguly.

With 11 player of series award and an average of 24 with bowl and 530 wickets and 6 tons with bat, Ashwin is an all time great for sure.

Kohli called him legend back in 2021 only.

Second highest man of the series in Test history. 10 of them. Should have been 11 equalling Murali but WI series did not have that award for soem weird reason. A genuine series player which is priceless to have in an era where guys like Rahul plays well in one test and go missing in 3 tests.

Should have given a farewell game but happy retirement legend. He is the main reason of India's dominance at home over the years. We will miss Ashwin - Jadeja partnership.

Very suspect retirement announcement- with the series on a cliffhanger. Also he didn’t take any questions in the presser. Did bro get in a huff because Jadeja played ahead of him & got runs? We would have needed him in SCG.

Biggest MVP in Indian cricket

7th Fastest to 100 wickets (18)
5th Fastest to 150 wickets (29)
3rd Fastest to 200 wickets (37)
1st Fastest to 250 wickets (45)
1st Fastest to 300 wickets (54)
1st Fastest to 350 wickets (66)
2nd Fastest to 400 wickets (77)
2nd Fastest to 450 wickets (89)
2nd Fastest to 500 wickets (98)

One of the biggest coward retirements of all time and a total rubbish fraud of a cricketer.

Chucker half of his career and when he remodeled that action was proven to be nothing more then an Asian bully.

Just the bowling version MS dhoni who's utter rubbish overseas.

The difference is MS dhoni atleast didn't orchestrate Mankad's and captaincy wise transformed an entire Indian team into a trophy cabinet winning side and s dominant test side.

This guy is a fraud. I remember once when he captained in IPL and he brought the team into ruin.

ATG spinning all rounder alongwith Jadeja. How many matches he has won, saved with bat, ball. Unparalleled in this era in terms of variation. Definitely the biggest match winner for India.

One thing I admire that Ash has understand that he is no longer effective now due to his age unlike leched like Virat and Rohit who are not wants to retired for team benifits.

Won India champions trophy 2013 final as well. Trott and Root wickets in 130 chase.

Outstanding player and arguably the greatest spinner of the current era.

The retirement seems to be borne more out of the way he has been treated recently than anything else. Which is the key difference between his retirement and Dhoni's test retirement, which was also mid-series. Can't say I blame him. Despite his record and skill, India never trusted him enough on overseas tours, and that was always disappointing to see.

People can call him a home-track bully all they want but simply put no spinner from the current era has his record of success, consistency and longevity.

He's also a very intelligent individual and a true student of the game, so I'm sure he will make a great analyst/broadcaster, should he choose to do that.

Abrupt retirement, might have had some issues with team management to be retiring mid series.

However, he was the main part of the most dominant home run in history of cricket and should be appreciated for all his efforts,

Good luck to him for future. He has got a great cricketing mind so I won’t be surprised to see him involved in coaching later on.

Some of the off field impact he made was ICC changing the rule of mankading to a fair dismissal. He also helped ICC weed out outright chuckers.

Will he do an Imad and be available if the country needs him?!
India never recalls a retired player for starters. Also retired players don't come out of retirement. I don't think anyone has done that. May be at domestic level. Not at international level.

Farewell Ashwin.

The greatest test spinner by far of post Murali-Warne era.

One of the greatest bowlers ever.

One of the greatest ever all rounders.

He retires as a legendary test bowler and an all time great of the game.

Thanks for the services Ashwin bhai. You will be missed always. Wishing you the best in life.

You are talking about Ashwin as if he’s some average joe spinner that come out from Pakistan every year. You don’t have a single spinner who matches him in your entire cricketing history.

I generally let go of these comments because every poster decides his tone and agenda here as long as it’s not breaking community rules. We all do that at times. But to do this on someone’s retirement who’s played so much cricket is just disgraceful behaviour as a cricket fan i must point out.

He has single handedly won so many home tests for India, despite possessing all the qualities needed to succeed in SENA countries, he somehow fell short of achieving consistent success

Deserves a far better send off, someone should talk him into a retirement test at Chepauk.

More than aswin his antics will be missed.who has the nerve to leave a wide ball at the most nerve wrecking situation or run out buttler to withstand all the criticism heads on. Making retired out as strategy in t20s and thorough appreciation /follow up of all the teams including pak in his youtube channel .

Fantastic cricketer who probably deserved a farewell test. Amazing career with ball and saved India many times with the bat as well, a true champion.

Great cricketer and seems like a decent guy too.

He should be proud of his service for his country and what he has achieved for his country.

Terrific career.

The sudden retirement is likely due to Jadeja locking his spot in the XI. Otherwise, I thought he would retire after the WTC cycle concluded.

Nonetheless, an analytical spinner who understood the game's inner workings better than most. This included his guile with the ball and with the bat. Ash's record is brilliant, especially at home and he's one of the major reasons they have dominated teams on spinning tracks for years.

Cricket Australia definitely understands what a player he is. Even in 2011 world cup quarter final he opened the bowling bowled 5 overs dismissed Watson and later Ponting. And at the oval in CT final India had to defend 124 in 20 overs. He had a spell of 4 overs 2 for 15 dismissing Root and Trott

Batting wise he is underrated too

He averages 26 away from home with 2 centuries.

This is quite close to a certain Aussie player who averages 29 without any century. :yk

In asian conditions at least he was one of the best spinners and second only to Kumble for all time great Indian spinners.
Happy retirement.

India's 12 year unbeaten Test series run at home owes a lot to Ashwin and his partnership with Jadeja. Big shoes to fill.

Hopefully he joins the commentary box and lifts the dire standard of Indian commentary. If ever there was a cricketer made for punditry it's him as he comes across as very intelligent in interviews.

Rohit opens up on Ashwin's retirement and memories of playing together

The Indian skipper reminisced on playing age-group cricket alongside Ashwin and praised his match-winning ability for India.
Ravichandran Ashwin took over the cricketing fraternity by surprise as he pulled the plug on his international career at the end of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Brisbane.

When asked about the ace spinner's decision in the middle of the five-Test series in Australia, Indian captain Rohit Sharma emphasized that the 38-year-old was firm in his decision, and needed to be backed for the same.

“Somebody like Ashwin who has been there for us for so many years is allowed to make those kind of decisions on his own,” Rohit told reporters in Brisbane.

“We as teammates have to respect it. He was very sure about what he wanted to do and the team has complete backing of his thought process,” he added.

Rohit shared that the thought of retirement had been brewing in Ashwin’s mind since the beginning of the ongoing tour.

“We had this chat when I arrived in Perth,” he said.

“I somehow convinced him to stay for the pink-ball Test and then after...it just happened. He felt that if I'm not needed right now in the series, I'm better off saying goodbye to the game.”

Ashwin played 106 Tests for India, snapping 537 wickets and scoring 3503 runs from the same. He remains the only Test cricketer to have claimed over 500 wickets and hit six centuries in the longest format of the game.

He also boasts 156 ODI wickets for India from 116 outings and 72 in the T20Is from 65 appearances.

Rohit cast his mind back to the time when he first came across Ashwin, playing age-group cricket in India.

“I've played cricket with Ash since U17. He was an opening batter back then. A few years later, we all disappeared.

“And then suddenly I'm hearing about Tamil Nadu's R Ashwin taking five wickets, and I was wondering who this guy is. Because I played him as a batsman and suddenly he has turned out to be a bowler who's taking five-fors.”

Furthermore, from his time playing alongside Ashwin at the senior level, Rohit commended the latter's match-winning ability and termed him as India’s crisis man.

“One of the true match winners that India has ever seen. Whenever there was a crisis, we had to look upon Ash, and he was there to deliver for us.

“His records speak for themselves. He has been a servant of Indian cricket and has probably not left any stones unturned.”

Very selfish and unprofessional to do this in the middle of the series when the series is still on the line. It creates unnecessary controversy on the team. He should have waited till the end of the series.

I would have liked him to retire after the series. Middle of series was not ideal.

Anyway, legend of the game and one of the best all rounders to play cricket. India domination at home for 10-12 years was built on back of Ashwin. 11, Highest number of man of the series in entire history by any cricketer.

Yes, Indan fans may say that they will find replacement, but you don't replace once in a generaiton great spinner, who can bat as well, so easily. There is doing well like Indians did in 90s at home and there is doing well in Ashwin's era. 11 MOS is simply showing how much India relied on him at home.

After Jadeja calls it a day, India will be still good at home but no longer winning so heavily. Unfair advanatge at home with 2 IK like all rounders was unfair when facing India at home. Teams were playing agasint 13 players. He is fantastic in analyzing as well and watches all kinds of matches.

Well done Ravi !! Enjoy your retirement.

He is the best reader of the game and will be one good analyst I'd say

Maybe he got indication that he won't be picked in the other tests
