[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Saud Shakeel: Essential or Liability?

Even though he had a bad Test series in Australia, I still have faith in him after how amazing he batted in Sri Lanka on those spinning pitches. In T20, we already have plenty of anchor type batsmen, many of which who do the role better than Saud will so he does not warrant a spot in that format.

Rizwan can only hit in the corner of the ground

Saud has shots all around the park

How is Rizwan playing the anchor role better than Saud??

He played a great innings today but I still don't feel he should be in the T20 team. At the end of the day, he is another anchor and we already have two who are better.

That said, it bears repeating that he has excellent temperament despite his obvious limitations and needs to be backed to the brim in ODIs and Tests.

what you talking about bro babar and riz are much better than this guy

this guy is just a fraud who is just good enough on flat pitches in international people gonna target him with short ball

we saw what happened in wc and aus tour
And which 100s did Babar score in the WC and AUS tour? Babar is so so overrated.

Saud Shakeel during a post-match conference after the game against Quetta Gladiators, said:

"I was thinking to extend the match a bit because in the last few games, I've been getting good starts but failing to capitalize on them. So, I decided to take the game deeper and assess the situation towards the end. That was my plan and fortunately it worked out well, we needed 4 runs off the last ball and credit goes to Wasim how he finished the game."

"Early on I realized that the pitch was slow which is making it difficult to play strokes even with the new ball. I remembered watching Shoaib Malik's innings yesterday and as he mentioned in an interview to always try to take the game down to the last ball and see how it works, that's precisely what we did and I'm happy that we executed well and in a good position now."

"That is very rare that i played all of my cricket here but the last game which i played here was my first t20 game on this venue (Karachi) but when you have played so much cricket on this ground you get an idea from where air blows, where most of the shots to be played here so these little knowledge helps u alot."

Also the Rizwan comparison does not make much sense since Rizwan plays as a wicket keeper batsmen - of which he is the best in the history of Pakistan.

Saud, unless he picks up the wicket keeper gloves, is competing with our full time batsmen like Saim, Babar, and Fakhar.

Saud Shakeel has been named the captain of SNGPL for the President's Cup starting from tomorrow. This guy has the potential to lead the national side. Just needs a bit of experience and grooming and we have a good middle order batter who can captain as well.

He can replace Ifthikhar

Mentally weak. Threw away good starts all throughout the World Cup, despite being in good form.

Exposed in Australia aswell.

Yep he looked good until he scored 20+ runs and then he just thought that my work was done. I am out.

Prefer Agha Salman to Saud. Salman looks to have better temperament aswell as the hunger to improve.

Saud is just too meek and doesn't have the right attitude towards international cricket.

Even in PSL, salman did good, Saud just has 1 good inning and rest is just not up to the mark.

Saud averages higher then rizwan and has a 141 sr while rizzu was stuck at 122 in psl? Why isn't anyone mentioning that saud was 10x superior to rizzu?

This whole hiding behind wicket keeping nonsense needs to end. Historically Pakistan has had specialist keepers at no 7 and no 8. No need to turn rizwan into a Bradman. He's a medicore t20 opener who should be playing as a specialist keeper only at 8.

I was was wondering should we not try Saud Shakeel as opener in test? So the potential XI goes as this:

Saud Shakeel
Abdullah Shafique
Shan Masood
Babar Azam
Mohammad Rizwan
Salman Agha
Aamir Jamal
Shaheen Afridi
Naseem Shah
Mir Hamza
Abrar Ahmed

Because i want to get rid of Imam & Saim.

Australia turned Langer into an opener, Hitman was not an opener originally. There are a few examples out there.

Saud is technically sound and has a chance to succeed.

Imam is already out of picture and Saim has played just 1 game that too on a difficult tour of Australia.

We might have toi get rid of Saud soon if he plays as an opener.

Saim has proven he is not cut for international cricket at the moment. I would forget him for the next 2-3 years. Let me sweat and score a ton of runs in domestic cricket.

This would be a very Pakistan cricket thing to do. Take a player impressing in his natural position as a middle order batsman make him open, destroy his confidence and then watch him disappear for ever. Personally when you have natural openers who can be tried, then you leave the middle order where they are if successful.

What is your proposed test opener pair for this year?

Definitely Abdullah Shafique and then either Abid Ali if he's fully recovered or a younger opener to invest in like Mohammad Hurraira.
Abid Ali is a terrific slip fielder but a below average batter at international level. I have seen him play and record suggest he is not the right guy.

Hurraira is a very young kid with potential, but exposure to international cricket so early in his career is very risky.

I think you might be mixing up Abid Ali with Imran Butt. Abid Ali was a very solid opening bat until he needed surgery.

I'd also rather invest in a young opener than ruin a player who is already proving to be really good in the middle order.

Oh sorry my bad. You are right. Totally forgot about Abid Ali. He was doing a decent job actually before he fell ill.

Has he been doing well in domestic cricket?

He was the third highest run scorer in the last first class tournament he played recently but with a fairly low strike rate. Never watched the tournament so I can't tell if he's back to his previous level or not.

Saud should stick to middle order. Don't wanna spoil the number he has been playing at and looked good as well. He needs to score beyond 20s and 30s though.

He could be a god T20 batter as he already proved while playing for Quetta Gladiators

He has a solid technique and with that he can also hit the ball sensibly so why give him a try.

I don't know if you guys remember that inning or not but it was a superb one.

On this day iIn 2023, Saud Shakeel made history as the first Pakistani batsman to hit a double century in Sri Lanka. He also became the second Pakistani, after Zaheer Abbas, to score a double hundred in his debut overseas Test.

Can he score another one in the upcoming series at home against Bangladesh??

He is a key batsmen for pakistan.

He and Abdullah shafiq are the future for pakistan and I back them.

Pakistan desperately needs to back salman Ali agha, Saud shakeel, Tayyab tahir, Omair bin yousaf and shabzada farhan

Saud Shakeel, with the added responsibility of captaincy of Pakistan Shaheens against Bangladesh, has flourished further in his game, scoring 76 (132) to help his team secure a dominant position on Day 2.

He looks so composed while batting, never gives you the feeling that he might throw his wicket away soon.

he is the only batsman in Test team on which Pakistan can rely

He's very good in asain conditions but anything that bounce chest height he looked very vulnerable.

He has a fantastic pull shot for chest height, I think you mean above chest height.

That was in Australia and every batsmen struggled, it's just it was more noticeable with saud cause he tried to pull it, the rest just ducked.

Saud's game towards point is also questionable. But he is a good player overall. PCB made a good decision to make him vice-captain.

How would you rate the fitness of Saud Shakeel? He seems super fit.

He's a gem for pakistan but ik pakistan will ruin him.

If they managed to ruin someone like fakhar zaman, they'll find a way to ruin him, actually to he fair, they are ruining him by batting him at no 4

Look, if you're going to be unrealistic and think he has no flaws and compare him to ATG's then no dice.

However he's a genuine gem for pakistan.

He and Fakhar are genuine gems for pakistan

Saud is considered a good player in Pakistan because we have no other options..

He will be badly exposed in England, Australia and South Africa... Does not handle the short ball well at all... and also very weak when the ball starts swinging (as are our other batsmen to be fair)...

Good in Subcontinent, West Indies, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, England conditions but an absolute no no in Australia and South Africa

Vice captaincy will have some effects on him in the upcoming games. People will have a lot of hope form this guy to do well so that he can be groomed as a future captain.

Should be doing well in home conditions.

He plays that sweep shot pretty well. Looking good at the crease atm. Don't want to jinx him here. LOL

Bro, None of our batsmen have ever been good in Australia lol. Even the best of the best have been avg in those conditions

This is a good way to handle the bowlers sometimes.

Saud using the crease nicely.

He is probably the next Asad, Azhar, or Misbah. Considering the poor batsmen we have been producing, he's definitely going to stay in the Test team for a long time.

Saud Shakeel completed 1000 runs in just 20 innings with an average of 62.6

Now he is the one Pakistan should look to invest in for the long term as a specialist Test batter, and he also needs to bat at number one down or two down in the batting order.

While their overall records there may be average, Inzamam, Yousuf, Younis, Azhar Ali, even Asad Shafiq have centuries in Australia. Saud looked hopeless out here

You're comparing ATG's or good players In test with a wealth of experience to a guy who's played only 11 tests?

Extremely solid and promising young talent. Average in mid 60s in tests only second to Marhoom Sir Don Bradman himself.

On track to become the greatest Pakistani batter ever.

A smart batsman, among the top six first class batters in Pakistan, no need to 'persist' or 'back' him - shown plenty already bar a tricky outing in Australia.

Pakistan has the ingredients for a decent/good test side:

Shafique, Ayub, Ghulam, Babar, Shakeel, Rizwan, Salman, Jamal, Shaheen, Naseem, Abrar

It is a shame the don never got a chance to see him play.

Proper test batsman. You can see his technique the minute he starts batting. Future test captain.

if the aus coaching stuff can help him overcome the weaknesses against fast/short-pitch bowling and Hazlewood off stump attach, then he should be all set for long-haul.

The guy can't play the cut shot to pacers if his life depended on it. The Australians identified this deficiencies and set him up well.

Steve Waugh couldn't pull the ball for the last 10 years of his career. Not all the shots are for all the players.

He is a great talent could work on that. If he does then could become next PCT captain soon

Not everyone has the mental toughness and grit of Steve Waugh. Waugh had the discipline to face 300 balls but avoid playing the hook and pull because he knew he was never good at it, he would put a price on his wicket but Pakistani batters in contrast do not have the same toughness or quality.

very true!

But I think his strength is playing with a straight bat which he should stick to otherwise he will lose confidence trying shots that are not in his books

Agreed but our batsman aren't brought on bouncier tracks so cutting and pulling are much more difficult. Waugh was tough Saud needs to work within his technical limitations and still be successful.
