He becomes the first Pakistani skipper to score a Test ton in South Africa!

Interesting, no reactions on this thread. Seems like everyone is totally done with Shan.
 
Shan just prolonged his career with this knock . I think his best knock of his career
 
Good batting. The thing is that we are so far behind that it appears a bit pointless.
 
Shan should be selflish here, because actually the more selfish he is the better for the team.
He should first aim for Azhar Mahmood record for highest score in SA by Pakistani, then Aim for :sachin to take highest score by SENA player. Then try to become first SENA player to scorea 200 in SA.
 
Shan Masood's 137* so far on Day 4 of the second Test against South Africa is now the highest score by a Pakistani batter in Tests in South Africa. The previous highest was 136 by Azhar Mahmood in 1998.

I was deeply sad when Gillespie left. I genuinely thought that he and Shan could have been like our Hussain + Fletcher.

Now we are left with Aqib tactics and Ahmed Shezad having the guts to share his insights again

Without his innings, Pakistan would've been on the receiving end of a battering. He kept Pakistan in the game for as long as he could. Stellar hundred from him.
 
Shan Masood scored a valiant 145 in the second innings of the second Test against South Africa and now he has moved up 12 places to 45th in the latest ICC Test batting rankings.

That inning is gonna cost us more than it has benefited.

Have to see him in the team for many more games to come now..
 
Is there a better captain in the team? Somebody who is an automatic choice and his game isn’t affected by the burden of captaincy? Rizwan is too new in the Odi captaincy to know for sure.

Salman?? We’ve done this before with Shohaib malik promoted somebody to open then captain before he had cemented his place in the side.

The batting is only now beginning to gel together as a unit. Some of the batters made runs in tough situations. That’s what you want to see. Focus on taking 20 wickets and the captain will look good. he can’t make them land a ball on the right area.
 
Another test match, another failure... How many more games will it take before we remove this guy from the team???

Just 11 today against West Indies in the 1st inning of the 1st test at home...
 
Thing is Masood has outperformed the rest of his competition in the top 3. Averages 35 as captain with 2 centuries. Under him as captain, Abdullah has averaged 18, Saim 26, Babar 25. Yes his past record goes against him but the rest of our guys aren’t making it easy to replace Masood. Not even sure right now if you take Masood out of our top 3 and get a replacement, we are actually stronger or not.

We desperately need players to perform in the top 3. Can’t keep going wickets down and hoping for middle order batsmen like Saud and Kamran to rescue us. Never going to reliably set totals like that. It’s especially sad how Abdullah has declined given he was the first for a while who was actually gathering a strong record as a test opener for Pakistan.
 
Shan’s Test average will forever fluctuate between 28-30 because that is his level. The worst batsman to ever play a substantial number of Test matches for Pakistan.

Both Sami Aslam and Shehzad were better than him but Pakistan lost both because of him.
 
Shan is not saving his career with his performance but Sajid and Noman have definitely helped him to stay relevant and stay captain now.
 
Shan has played spin exceptionally well in this innings, coming down the track confidently and reaping the rewards on Day 2 of 1st Test against West Indies

getting run out is not acceptable in tests. Shan masood got run out for 52, he was looking good but that was a crazy mishap... Not sure why they have to be so urged to do such crazy things.

The smartest cricketer we have & the hardest worker in the team....yet Pakistani fans are looking to get rid of him.

He's the only player in the team who plays according to the modern standards of test cricket.

We finally have a cricketer who has an education & a good upbringing and can actually understand the game.

We deserve to have people like Rizwan who are arrogant behind the scenes & have 0 cricket IQ. All they have picked up is what they have learned in club cricket throughout KPK.

Shan deserves a stay, he's outperforming Pakistan's "king".

Regardless, if he is let go and gives up on playing cricket. He should be the first choice for Coach/Selector/Chairman down the line.

Superb post. People judge by his average, which isn't a reflection of him in current affairs.

Rizwan must be reminded this isn't a Peshawar street cricket.

I've been resolute with my defence of Shan because like yourself I know his value and how overrated Babar is.
 
If he can lead from the front with the bat I think he will be a good test captain. A lot of his captaincy mistakes I felt came from insecurity and low confidence, feeling you have to do something special as a captain to make up from your performance. I think also at times it didn’t look like the players and team were really behind him, which again has probably to do with the fact it’s strange having someone who hasn’t really cemented his name as a senior telling them what to do. Same when he went around asking the other senior players what to do, because he probably and quite logically do doesn’t feel like the main guy in the team due to his record and thus self doubts himself.

He is actually performing well enough to keep his place given he’s outperforming is competitors in the top 3, Abdullah, Saim, Babar and now the new guy in Hurreira. Though of course he isn’t excelling like Saud, but then again most of the middle order are outperforming the top order.

I said it before, the guy nearly has everything else. The guy is smart, captaincy ability, great fitness, good work ethic, willingness to improve his game, willing to make improvements in his game, listen to others and work on himself, and work well with coaches. He is just remarkably untalented for an international player. And unfortunately it’s the biggest factor. And why it’s taken him so long to get to even this average level, when there are talented 20 year olds who are same/better than what Masood is now. Still if a lot of our other players currently and in past had the same dedication to fitness and improving at the game that Masood is, coupled with their superior talent, Pakistan would be a very strong cricketing side. Instead a lot our talented guys tend to get fat, fix or show zero application to make improvements in their game.

Rizwan can't string two sentences together and most tableeghis aren't intelligent enough for test captaincy anyway ( exceptions made for those who convert later in life), Babar is a complete dud test captain and his tenure will be judged harshly in the future for setting our test cricket back, Said is still inexperienced.

Why the hell would we remove Shan? Like what is the reason?

It's a cricket match not a language competition

Which captain scored runs almost every innings? Rizwan? He scored 2 runs. Yes he scores more than 1 run every innings.
 
Education and exposure is very important

MashaAllah Shan has a good amount of this. We cannot trust a guy who hardly has any of it to lead the Test side.

Not much was needed from his captaincy but he was composed with the bat against spin.

Shan has scored in every series since captain. He has 10 less runs than Rizwan who scored heavily against Bangladesh.

Is these 10 runs, poor T20 captaincy and bangla bashing enough to give him the captaincy over Shan?

You are being unreasonable if you say yes.
 
InshaAllah all Shan has to do is win the next Test and s score a 50 in one of the two innings.

Then the next 10 months will be absolute torture for RizBar fans as they will have no leg to stand on in their PR agendas to overthrow him.

Now we will accept Shan is medicore as you are our brother and we will be gracious.

But please tell me your definition of the rest of the players? What is the best word to describe them?

Otherwise has been a rubbish with his batting
