[PICTURES/VIDEOS] The "cobra 'naagin' dance" celebration...

There's this absolutely brilliant article by the always entertaining Andrew Fidel Fernando (from Sri Lanka) and Mohammed Isam (from Bangladesh) on Cricinfo about this

Why Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh is like large men fake-wrestling each other in too-tight underpants

Some entertaining extracts

A team of grown men pointing at their wrists with intent to provoke, a naagin dance mockingly traded for years, a shattered dressing room door, a timed-out dismissal, press conference tantrums, on-field aggro - in this column we will attempt to intellectualise that which is resplendently unintellectual: the rivalry between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Theirs is a conflict born of precisely jack-all. Where into the Ashes are braided hundreds of years of colonial angst and references to convict ancestry, where India vs Pakistan is clouded by dark history and the threat of nuclear conflict, and where even Afghanistan vs Pakistan connects to a porous border and ongoing geopolitical strife, Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh brings no serious national tensions to the table.

Into this general background of top-tier good times and the chillest possible vibes have stomped Sri Lanka's and Bangladesh's male cricketers like herds of filthy water buffalo rampaging through a serene flower-laden valley. They have demanded undue attention, twisted unimportant topics into questions of national pride, and turned what used to be fun little international fixtures into festivals of completely unasked-for testosterone.

This is not a rivalry that anyone asked for. It is not the rivalry the cricket world deserves. It is not the one we need right now. But it is the one we got.

Essentially it's a stupid, pointless rivalry based on nothing. Like my daughter and her friend who're not talking and taunting each other for the last couple of weeks because one of them didn't let the other sit beside her on the school bus ride home.

Yeah. This rivalry has no political or religious angle (like we see with AFG-Pakistan or Ind-Pakistan). I also scratch my head why it happened.

It started off when a guy named Nazmul did the nagin celebration; he was the first person to start it. After that, Gunathilaka from SL did it mockingly. After that, Mushfiqur did it back to mock. It snowballed from there.

Nagin dance has been replaced with wristwatch/helmet (to reference Matthews's timeout dismissal) thing now.

I thought eliminating India in 2007 WC and 2012 Asia Cup were far bigger achievements.
Definition of choti choti khushiyan. Atleast the ones Romali mentioned BD won a tournament..but alas one game is what makes BD posters happy so be it.

A World Cup win is far better than a JAMODI series win.

Then again, India seem to prioritize IPL and JAMODIs more. It explains why no trophy since 2013.

Lol well since you think 2012 Asia cup ‘s one game mattered , letting you know we have tons of those cups.(even after 2013)

Would you want to retreat and say only 2007 matters now?

Back to the topic, Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh is starting to develop into a decent rivalry.

Kinda like watching 2 little kittens going at each other...

😇

After that time out incident, the Bangladesh Srilanka rivalry has stepped up 1 level up. Good for cricket LOL

If you call it a fluke, Indian win in Australia was a fluke too.

Win is a win.
You can't fluke a test match, let alone 2 test series in a row because it takes place over 5 days.

It's possible to fluke a one off odi/t20 game and has happened before quite a few times.

And Bangladesh won nothing in both 2007 and 2012, so those wins mean nothing if I use your logic

I agree with sweep shot if it had been a fluke Ban won't have won against India and that too twice.

India U19 are reeling at 73/5 against Bangladesh U19, with Bangladesh fans performing the Naagin dance during the final of the ACC U19 Asia Cup 2024

Never liked this nagin dance. It gives off cringy Bollywood vibe.

I condemn nagin dance.

Nagin dance is second only to the moonwalk in terms of the most sophisticated dance moves I've seen. Bangladeshis are a creative bunch.

People can call it cringe, but these kind of passions brings eyeballs to the sport.

Cricket is kinda dead outside sub continent, it’s good for cricket Bangladesh is doing all these antics, it’s keeping cricket growing in Bangladesh and by being villains, other team fans enjoy when their team beats Bangladesh, so they support their team in it.

No one watches the game for that celebration.

If it truly grew cricket in BD, they’d be a cricketing superpower by now

If BD was even on an upward trajectory, they’d have rivalries. BD hasn’t achieved anything of substance so they don’t have any rivals

That’s not how sports work, plenty of examples out there on how heels or controversies get newspapers/media talking and more eyeball reaches sports.

BD are the mid card villains in cricket, and they are playing their part well.

Their brand of dance aligns perfectly with thier brand of Cricket they play. 🤡

How come BD fans don’t realize that this is an extremely embarrassing and lame celebration.

I really want to root for BD but these kind of things make it so difficult

It is only a handful of fans who do it. Most BD fans do not do it.

I am anti-nagin dance as I believe it belongs in Bollywood. :inti

I said in another thread that some Pak players and their fans have started behaving like Bangladeshi cricketers and fans - attitude toptier despite performances being bottom-tier. Looks like they are inspired now by this naagin dance too :jimmy
