Removed Steve Smith with his first ball of his Test career!

So who is Shamar Joseph?

From one of the most remote villages in the Caribbean islands to owning the first day of his Test debut at the iconic Adelaide Oval, 24-year-old Shamar Joseph has come a long way. The right-arm fast bowler picked up 2 wickets, including that of Australia's new Test opener Steve Smith in the very first delivery of his career and hit a quickfire 36 while batting at No. 11 to help the visitors post a total that gave something for their bowlers to bowl at.

Shamar Joseph had not played top-flight cricket until 2023, but he did not let the sense of occasion overwhelm him on his Test debut at the Adelaide Oval on January 17.

Shamar Joseph was one of the three debutants for West Indies in the first of the 2-Test series against Australia. And the Jamaican did not take time to showcase his prowess to the cricket world. West Indies were reeling at 133 for 9 when Shamar joined hands with senior pacer Kemar Roach in the middle and the two players added 55 runs for the last wicket. Shamar hit 36, including 3 boundaries and a six as took on the pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood.

Shamar Joseph could not have asked for a batter start to his bowling career as he got Steve Smith caught at slips with the very first delivery of his spell on Wednesday in Adelaide. Shamar did not hold back as he set out for a celebratory sprint around Adelaide Oval. He dented Australia further as he got the big wicket of Marnus Labuschagne with a sharp bouncer.

Australia ended the day at 59 for 2, still trailing West Indies's first innings total of 188 by 129 runs. The West Indies players allowed Shamar Joseph to lead them out of the field as the young pacer lived up to expectations on his very first day as a Test cricketer.

BARACARA BOY MAKES IT BIG

Born in the small village of Baracara, Guyana, Shamar Joseph grew up in a large family with five brothers and three sisters. His early life in Baracara, a remote area accessible only by a two-day boat trip up the Canje River, was humble and devoid of modern conveniences like proper telephone or internet service until 2018.

Despite the challenges, Joseph found solace and excitement in cricket. He would often play tape-ball cricket in his village. In his village, TV sets are a rarity, but Shamar did not let his love for cricket go astray as he kept watching highlight reels of legendary West Indies fast bowlers, including Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.

Before his rise in cricket, Joseph worked as a bodyguard to support his family, including his 2-year-old kid. However, his love for the sport was too strong to ignore, and he made the bold decision to quit his job and pursue cricket full-time. This leap of faith paid off when he began playing first-class cricket for the Guyana Harpy Eagles in February 2023. Although he only played in three games during that season, he took nine wickets, showing enough promise to earn a spot in the West Indies A squad for their tour of South Africa.

Shamar Joseph worked as a security guard not long ago. It's been a remarkable rise and that wicket of Smith sums up his qualities nicely.

Unfortunately when you're a WI bowler you won't often have many runs to play with.

A dream start to life in Tests for Shamar Joseph, dismissing Steve Smith with his very first ball.

The debutant, Shamar Joseph has got his first five-wicket haul that too in his first outing of the test career. Brilliant start from this youngster.

A future asset for Windies if they could really preserve him through work load management.

What a great transformation from a body guard to being a new pace sensation for West Indies. The guy hails from a humble background and despite lack of proper cricketing facilities in his area, still managed to shine against odds. I can forsee a promising future for this 24 years old lad who also happens to be the sole proper breadwinner for his family.

Joseph got injured yesterday when the ball from Mitchell Starc struck on his toes. But he is cleared of any injury and is back on the field. But he was seen wearing wearing Zach McCaskie's shirt, so he's had the name and number taped up, but now he is wearing is own number 70 shirt again. That taping is funny.

Looks like that toe crusher has woken up his inner beast now. He takes 2 in 2 as he removed both Green and Travis Head now. Brilliant stuff by this youngster.

What a debut this is for the young man. Gets back to back fifers against Australia in Australia and puts his team in a commanding position to win the match and level the series.

The most exciting WI pacer in a very long time, that was a joy to watch.

Shamar finished the innings with a 7-fer and took his team to victory all alone. What a match it was for the debutant. 8 wickets in the match for him.

He’ll be owned by an IPL franchise by the end of the year. Hopefully, the ICC can sort out their terrible revenue share package so players of average backgrounds don’t become pawns to these Indian owners.

What a start to his career. Bowls like the early Kemar Roach. Similar action and yorkers.
Lots of passion in his game.
He'll be snatched away by leagues quickly I guess.

How do you propose this happens?

It's his control over line and length at that speed that was impressive.

53 % on a good length.

27% short which is good in Australia if you are 135+ and he was 140 + today.

Barely anything beyond 6th stump.

World class bowling

Hopefully someone shows these clips to the clowns of the Indian selection committee.

This is why you give chances to young FAST bowlers. They can win you a match by blasting the opposition.

But Indian selectors are more interested in giving chances to 30 year old military medium Mukesh Kumar, 31 year old trundler Shardul Thakur and 28 year old medium pacer Prasidh Krishna.

And that's the condition in domestic cricket as well.

Delhi doesn't play Mayank Yadav.

UP doesn't play Kartik Tyagi

J and K doesn't give regular chances to Umran Malik.

These three hit 150 plus regularly. But don't get game time. Are not being developed properly.

It was such an amazing spell of bowling.. reminded of some of the great bowling spells we go back and watch years later on YouTube.

Just the consistency at that pace for that long..

He already played cpl ILT20

Nah, that was more than pace. Joseph has exceptional talent and skill.

Lockie and Milne have that kind of pace but they would never be able to bowl a spell like that.

those are some garbage bowlers you mentioned.

Pace and accuracy matters. Thos three indian bowlers do have pace, but not accurate enough.

India won in AUstralia due to accurate bowlers. As long as they are doing that they are great bowling side. We took aamir jamal and he did get 18 wickets, but his poor line and length showed that he was not a very good bowler and wont last long on pace.

With an injured toe as well.

Gerald Coetzee in the World Cup semifinal and this spell .

Very intense and entertaining.

Incredible bowler, saw him in the warm up and knew he’d create trouble for Australia. Has that effortless pace + accuracy that you see from Rabada and Archer. Really hope he continues to play test cricket

None of them have played a complete season of Ranji. All of them below 25. Mayank Yadav is not even 22.

You need to give them matches to develop them.

Selectors kept Bumrah out of the test team for 3 years. Saying he is only a white ball bowler.

They kept Shami out of White ball.

There is no sense.

Check my posts from BGT i kept saying playing Axar Patel over Kuldeep because Axar can bat a bit will be counter productive.

Axar is a average bowler. With no Shami. Jadeja being half fit, England wasn't put under any pressure in the second innings.

Dravid must understand this isn't U19 cricket. This is test cricket and it needs specialists.

Curtly Ambrose mentioned Shamar Joseph on commentary during the WI-ENG series last month as one to watch.

Well he bowled some unplayable deliveries that was like Curtly at his best.

The yorker to Head was great but the ball to Smith that hurt his hand - just wow. Proper old school WI pace bowling.

Windies probably would've lost badly without him.

A very good find for the Windies. May he doesn't get lost in T20 world and focus on international cricket.

Out of curiosity, what is the justification that is given for Shami being dropped so often when he is such a world class bowler?

Even in the ODI World Cup, I felt that Pandya injury in one way was a blessing in disguise because it allowed Shami to enter the squad and we saw how deadly his bowling is in Indian conditions. I feel that even with the return of Pandya, Shami should surely be playing over Thakur?

A natural athlete , good runup and action , generates good pace , hope he will continue to do well although he lacks a good height , but not short either .

Just hours after Gus Atkinson was picked by PZ during the supplementary draft, they seems to have realised Atkinson is with the England Test squad till March 11 :ROFLMAO:

mark my words

1. PSL stint in 2024 - and if he does well...
2. IPL stint in 2025
3. IPL stint in 2026,7,8,....
4. No further stints in PSL

I hope West Indies will not lose Shamar to franchise cricket (like it happened to many of their players).

Shardul Thakur can bat a bit and contribute 10-15 runs, Shami cannot.

That's the excuse of a coach who has no idea what he is doing.

Another example is Axar Patel playing ahead of Kuldeep Yadav.

Likely.

But if he plays IPL with a million dollar contract and CPL only, it leaves him with a lot of time to rest and play for WI.

The confidence of bowling well has added 3 or 4 miles to his bowling. Love his attitude but alas when the big money comes to him, he too will go the way of Hetmyr and others. I don't blame him, I would probably do the same but it's a terrible shame for the Windies

Beginning of the end of Shamar the test bowler, will be another T20 bowler and will be playing all over the world in t20 leagues , all year round and soon will be unavailable for the West Indies team. Only Australia and England can manage to keep their test match specialist with a balance approach between playing tests and T20 leagues, India also to some extend, no other country.

Nothing wrong with a bit of T20 cricket but I hope he keeps it to a limit.

I would aim for IPL + CPL. That's enough money to ensure he's not missing out on a big payday. He has tremendous potential as a Test bowler and should not let it go to waste.

Shamar Joseph, due to a toe injury sustained during the Gabba Test, will not be available to play for the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 season.

There is nothing wrong with playing leagues but workload management and National Duty should be the preferred choice when it comes to pick inbetween them. Shamar will soon be a superstar if he continues working hard like he did in the Aussie Series.

Joseph’s foot injury costs him T20 gig with Warner in UAE after break-out West Indies series

West Indies’ newest pace sensation Shamar Joseph’s foot injury suffered during his historic Gabba display has cost him a deal with the Dubai Capitals in the UAE Twenty20 league.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported Joseph has been forced to fly home to the Caribbean after his foot injury has been deemed too serious to play on.

Joseph had made just five first-class appearances before his Test debut in Adelaide, before taking back-to-back five-wicket hauls, including match winning figures of 7-68 in Brisbane.

Joseph was initially set to travel from Australia to the UAE and join former Test opener David Warner at the Capitals, who are owned by the same conglomerate that owns the Delhi Capitals IPL franchise.

However, a West Indies spokesman confirmed to The Herald that Joseph would instead fly home to the Caribbean to rest his toe that was struck by a Mitchell Starc thunderbolt late on day three at The Gabba.

The UAE league runs until February 18, but Joseph has also signed another Twenty20 deal with Peshawar, in the Pakistan Super League with Peshawar, a tournament starting on the same date.

Joseph declared he would always be available to play Test cricket for the West Indies no matter how much money came his way, after his heroics in the Brisbane Test.

“I’m not afraid to say this,” Joseph said.

“There will be times when T20 cricket might come around. Test cricket will be there. And I will say this live. I will always be available to play for the West Indies, no matter how much money it takes or come towards me. So I will always be here to play Test cricket.”

Kraigg Brathwaite, the West Indian captain, said that a balance between Twenty20 and Test cricket was vital for the further progression of his team.

“It is a balance. Look at Alzarri Joseph, he’s in the IPL and he has a lot of heart for Test cricket,” Brathwaite said.

“He wants to be here. Today he was tired and he still came in those last two overs at the tail. Once you have the love for this game and this hard Test cricket, the right balance is key.

“I do believe we should be playing more Test cricket more consistently. Our next Test series is July 10, which is a long while away, so I believe we have talent and it shows the world that we are going to be competitive and win Test matches, but we need more cricket, and that’s my cry.

“When we go back home, we have to keep the same mentality towards preparation. When you play Test cricket you’re playing against the best in the world, so the key for us is never to slack off, and have heart. This team has a lot of heart, and my thing for the guys is we did well, but this is just one Test win. We have a number of Test matches remaining this year, so it now begins. The same sort of attitude, the same planning we had, it has to continue. It can’t slacken off.”

Lol at those who think he's going to skip T20 leagues.

Only missing ILT20 because of injury. He's getting ready for PSL.

CPL is also a given.

IPL is aspirational.

He will play at least 4 leagues by next year - CPL, PSL, IPL and one of SA20/ILT20

This makes sense. His PZ coach is none other than Daren Sammy who's also WI white-ball coach.

Shamar Joseph moves up 42 places to reach 50th position in the latest ICC Test Ranking.

His sensational seven-wicket haul in the second innings helped the West Indies score a thrilling eight-run victory over Australia in Brisbane to draw the two-match series.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) proudly announces the upgrade of Shamar Joseph from his current Franchise contract to a CWI International retainer contract. This decision comes in recognition of Joseph's outstanding performance and invaluable contribution to the recent historic victory against Australia on their home soil in Brisbane, marking Australia's first defeat to the West Indies since 1997.

Enoch Lewis, CWI Director and Chair of the Cricket Development and Performance Committee expressed, "As exhilarated as we are, it is also dutiful to elevate Shamar Joseph to a CWI International retainer contract. His extraordinary talent and steadfast dedication serve as the cornerstone of our team's recent triumph at the Gabba, and such promise merits its due recognition. Shamar has not just been rewarded with a retained contract he has earned it.”

Shamar Joseph's remarkable debut series showcased his prowess with 13 wickets in two matches, including a match-winning spell of 7 for 68 in the decisive second test. His performance, coupled with his dedication, exemplifies the spirit of West Indies cricket.

Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, remarked, "Shamar's elevation to a CWI International retainer contract reflects his potential and the bright future ahead for West Indies cricket. We have also offered Chemar Holder a franchise contract as we double down on securing the best fast-bowling talent available. We are excited to see both men continue to excel”.

With these contract upgrades, CWI reaffirms its commitment to nurturing talent and fostering excellence within the team. Shamar Joseph's journey exemplifies the promising future of West Indies cricket, and we look forward to his continued success. Meanwhile, we will continue to support Chemar Holder who returned from injury rehabilitation and has shown signs of eagerness to be reintegrated at the highest level.

No young player who's made a name for themselves turns down franchise cricket, but I hope he doesn't overdo it

What an outstanding young talent. Only thing is he is a little short. What a bowler though.

Phenomenal talent. Lung busting runs that he made in the field, powerful bowling, his stride and the way he launches the ball like a professional javelin thrower. What a scintillating performance. Unreal fast bowler.

Great players are only made in test cricket

Modern players just should just play franchise cricket, test cricket and then before world cups just play some prep multi country torunaments.

Shamar Joseph, who picked a seven-wicket haul to steer West Indies to an incredible Test win against Australia, has been roped in by Lucknow Super Giants.

Shamar Joseph, West Indies' hero in their incredible win against Australia in the second Test, is set to make his maiden Indian Premier League appearance this year. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) roped in Joseph's services ahead of the 2024 season of the league, as the West Indian will replace England's Mark Wood in the squad.
