[PICTURES] Who is the most complete batter of the Fab four?

I'd say Root because we're talking about a "complete" batsman.

He can play the moving ball, has good temperament and can adapt to all formats. The only thing that he lacks is the consistency of big scores away from home. He's got the big scores away alright but he still needs to score more. Some match-winning innings and some big scores in the Ashes might establish him as #1 perhaps.

Kohli follows because although he might be a potential ATG in LOIs, he definitely has issues in test cricket and with the moving ball on fourth stump in any format.

Smith is next because he loves playing at home and he's got all kinds of huge scores at home. He needs to score more consistently away from home against good bowling line-ups.

Kane is not that special in my opinion. I'd rather take Warner/Amla as 4th best instead of KW.

Lol Babar Azam is better than all of them, The top international Batsmen right now are:

Babar, Azhar, Asad, Amla, Warner, Cook, Hope, Mathews, Sami Aslam

Then Comes Tier 2:

Smith, Kohli (He's essentially third Tier but I'll be kind enough to give him Tier 2), Root, Williamson, Sarfraz (Tier 1 Potential), Shan, Harris (Tier 1 potential) Usman (Tier 1 Potential)

The Remaining can be categorized in Tier 3

Smith scored 3 centuries against india vs no 1 and no 2 spinners in the world, scored 215 and 143 in england , scored centuries in sa . Root is not having an extra gear in odis. Kohli is a ftb and is a walking wicket when there is something in the pitch. 134 in 10 innings in England lol. ;-)

Smith in Tests (Away)
Avg: 53.94
50/100: 13/10

Smith in ODIs (Away) (since 2014)
Avg: 37.43
SR: 77.39
50/100: 9/2

Smith in T20Is (Away) (since 2014)
Avg: 30.62
SR: 131.72

Root in Tests (Away)
Avg: 46.34
50/100: 15/3

Root in ODIs (Away)
Avg: 54.31
SR: 83.42
50/100: 13/6

Root in T20Is (Away)
Avg: 37.85
SR: 127.09

I hope these stats prove my point that Smith still needs to score big in LOIs while the only problem with Root is lack of daddy hundreds away from home but he still maintains very handsome averages in ODIs and T20Is while having a very good average of 45+ in tests away from home. Smith only matches or is better in Tests but honestly, Root is the ultimate all format player.

Kane is considered slow in ODIs but one needs to look at Smith's SR in ODIs. Smith's ODI SR is poorer among the fab 4.

Smith strike rate is 88 better than root and williamson . His sytike rate in last 20 overs is better than kohli

Think Root will be up there with Kohli and ABDV statistically although he doesn't have any real great knock in odis yet like Kohli has and neither does he have that entertainment quotient and innovative hitting ability to the level close to AB.

Kane again may have good stats but nothing special in his odi batting.

Smith has great contribution in WC wins but doesn't have the stats.

Since 2015 WC, Kane's SR is 87.25 as compared to Smith's 87.03.

Kane has made tremendous improvement in his limited overs game in the last 2 years.

Kohli in ODI, Smith in Test...Although Kohli has not won WC, but Smith has not exactly won either, WC15 was Strac's WC...I don't have to look at stats to know Kohli is better than rest in ODIs, same is true for Smith in test...

In T20, none of them has won WC, if I recall, people fear likes of power hitter more than these types of players...WCs, IPLs/BBL/PSL etc are won by different kind of players, T20 discussion is not relevant for these type of batsmen...WI has won 2 WCs with 8 power hitters, who are also sold all over the world for those skills...Dynamic are different in T20

Kohli is easily the most feared T20 batsman in the world.

None of them.

VK is the best in ODIs, but has a lot to prove in swinging conditions. Smith scores heavily in tests, but is unable to really win games in ODIs. Root does well enough in both, but has yet to do great away from home, and keeps throwing it away after scoring 60-odd - not the habit of a quality test batsman. Poor Kane is too kiwi to be considered the greatest. He doesn't get to play enough games to make his case in LOIs. The fact that Ashwin brought him to heel on the India tour also goes against him a bit.

There are others outside the fab 4 who are worthy of being in the mix. QdK. Rahane. I expect Rahane and Pujara to do fairly well in the next 12 months - India play SA, England and Australia away from home in the near future. If KL Rahul manages to stay injury free - which is not likely given how fragile he is, he might enter the discussion as well.

Kohli is easily the most feared T20 batsman in the world.

How many Championships(T20) RCB or India has won under Kohli? - Both RCB and India lost under him, he was only able to score 25ish runs in last 4 overs against SL in T20 final that lost them the final...RCB inspite of all the fire power has yet to win Championship in last 8/9 years...Both Kohli/AB has failed almost all the time...They have nothing to show for...

Kohli was the man of the tournament in the last two T20 world cups. A single player cannot win an entire tournament by themselves.

Are you saying India was a crappy team, despite Kohli the Great?? - I though, Indian team is the best thing since slice of bread :afridi1

Kohli, Gayle and AB has been hogging RCB wallet for a decade, without delivering Championship...Maybe they are not as great as many assume :srini

Stats Thread : Top batsman rated by Peak Career average

A small table which might prove the stunning achievement to Steven Smith.

In this table i selected all players with batting average over 45 (min 50 tests).

Then i checked their career at 50 test (or more mark) where they achieved peak career average.

I have highlighted the current players.

It's Kohli
Smith Williamson and babar
Root gets demoted

Root gets criticized for conversion rate. What's the rate for Babar? I don't think he has even handful of tons to belong in this comparison.

He's just joined the club. Root can't even score 50s nymore

I am sorry dude with 1 century in 20 something tests he is not even close to be spoken of in the same breath as Kane or Root, Smith and Kohli are in a different planet all together.

Couple of half centuries and Babar is in the same group with the fab 4!! Mazaak ki bhi hadd hoti hai bhai!!

Ok it's
Kohli
Smith and Williamson
Babar
Root

The boy is ready

Yes the boy is ready, the boy has got the talent but he is not there yet, not even close, in fact his test record is pretty poor for someone with 20+ test matches.

If you really believe he is already better than Root then I have got nothing to say!!

2018 was his breakthrough year.
Root needs to give up captaincy if he want to start scoring his 70s and 80s again.
Babar is already doing that now

Bhai, I suggest you please take a look at Root's stats I am sure you would be embarrassed to even mention Bobby in the same sentence with him.

I love root but he has been pretty useless since 2018. I genuinely believe Babar is on the upward trajectory. Let's see if root gets back up there.
I'm not too concerned with what's happened from 2012?! That's in the past

Bhai try to understand, at this point Babar is rated in tests mostly on potential, let him achieve at least a third of what Root accomplished then we can compare, he is not in the same level as someone like Root atm.

Forget about who has done what bhai
If I had to choose some one to go out there and bat for my life tomorrow. if I needed somebody to score a 150 it would be kohli, then Williamson, then Smith.

If I was looking some1 to score a 75 then it would be babar, ahead of root currently.

That is the way I look at it

Pujara ahead of Root now in the fab 4.

Lol did someone bring in Babar in the mix ?

Pujara may not belong to this club. Bit like how Dravid didin't fit the club Tendulkar/Lara/Ponting. HE is a classic test match batsman not a dominating stroke player.

Smith also played match winning knocks in the WC SFs and Fs in 2015, something that I have not seen Kohli do.

That's true.

But Kohli is still the better batsmen in ODIs, if Smith steps up again and plays some big knocks on the big stage you could make a case for him.

In Tests, definitely.

Kohli is still the best batsmen of this generation, unless Smith wins another WC in that case it's difficult.

If Smith is better in tests then he is beter overall automatically.

The gap between them is closer in Tests than it is in ODIs, T20s means little but Kohli is ahead there too.

As a batsmen I'd say he's superior to Smith, if Smith were to lead Aus to another WC, that would make me rethink it.

It doesn't matter what the gap is in LOIs. If X is better than Y in test cricket then X is the overall better and bigger cricketer regardless.

That's how it is regardless of it any lover of rainbow cricket likes it or doesn't.

Bhaijaan.

Most consider Kohli the batsmen of this generation, yes they do think that way.

It doesn't matter what most people do. Classic art is also appreciated by less people than Justin Bieber songs.

I am surprised you came up with this arguenent though.

Well, if the majority are saying it now, this is what will pass once both are retired.

For me it's Tests over LOIs and Smith is better than Kohli in Tests by a massive margin (and everyone elss). In LOIs, when the team really needs you, it's a bit blurred right now, who out of the team you'd really want to bar and I do t think it wrong to suggest Smith over Kohli tbh.

If Smith goes big in WCs again, that would close the gap and possibly swing it in his favor.

I don't think the gap in Tests is as big as it is in ODIs. Kohli scores 100s every other game in ODIs. In Tests they're quite similar in terms of centuries.

I think Smith has been relevant in Tests for a much longer period As one of the best batsmen in the format (since 2013/14), whereas Kohli only came onto his own from 2017 onwards, so in that regard Smith is ahead and I also think Smith is comfortably, the best Australia have in their current era in Tests whereas Kohli, is he better than Pujara recently, it's not clear cut.

Smiths numbers are inflated by the flat drop in roads in Australia. Otherwise is not much ahead.

Yes, but Kohli seems to have mastered batting in Test cricket so it wouldn't surprise me if he continues to do this for another 4-5 years.

That just sounds like an excuse to me, all the other batsmen in his team and in the opposition get the same pitches, how come they event scored anywhere near as heavily as him?

That may be true, but he is at his absolute peak right now, so while his output is probably at career best and will continue for some time, a dip in form is not going to be too far away.

Kohli has also scored heavily in Australia against superior pace attack. Other current Aussie batsmen are of low standard. Even the Marshes, Khwaja managed to score heavily in last ashes who struggle everywhere else. Smith's away average is way below his avg in Australia.

I think there's an element of greatness that needs to be attributed to batsmen that carry weak batting lineups like Smith has and that's not to say the likes of Warner and Marsh are weak at home, they're not, but for Smith to completely decimate them in terms of performance speaks for itself.

In tests smith is better than kohli, by how much depends on who you support, but in LoI's kohli on 1 foot and 1 hand tied behind his back is a better player than smith will ever be.

Smith averages 41, that number alone is enough to count him out any batting conversations, he has had 1 great worldcup beyond that he is mediocre.

Same applies for Kohli too, look at how it went for india in SA and Eng, just because pujara had a great Aus series doesn't change the fact that india is very much kohli dependent.

I'd have both in my current day Test and ODI teams.

I think you're misconstruing my comment about the ODIs, I mean in the very important moments which ICC WCs are, Smith has performed and Kohli hasn't, so by that mark, I'd prefer Smith to bat for your team when everything is on the line.

Think it's different psychologically different because with India you know you have several batsmen who can pull you out of trouble, dont think that's the case with Australia after Smith is out.

Smith has performed in one ICC tournament in home conditions. He has played in 3 (4?) more and completely failed in those.

Steve Smith = Gautam Gambhir as far as ODI cricket goes.

Both performed in very important moments in an ODI WC at home but haven't done anything of significant note otherwise.

I'm not comparing them legacy-wise, in fact, if you do a career comparison between Smith and Gambhir, it might show Gambhir coming out ahead in ODIs so far and that's primarily cos Smith has done most of his best work in Tests.

However, if you want someone to bat for your team in an ICC WC Final in the current day, it would be Steven Smith, not anyone else.

An ICC WC final not in Australia?

You would take Smith over anyone else?

You seem to be nit picking quite a bit, but yes I would take Smith.

Different strokes for different people.

I wouldn't take the guy who averages 28 at a S/R of 76 over the likes of Root, leave alone Kohli.

That's being unfair on gambhir, gambhir did it in 2 different competitions unlike Smith who hasn't done jackshit outside of 2015 wc

Steve Smith has been rubbish in every CT he has played, same goes for any WT20, he had a decent world cup, he wasn't the best batsman in the world cup, guptill, sangakarra and abd were better and scored more runs.

You are the one nitpicking here as for some reason being decent in 1 world cup and it's 1 not world cups just a solitary world cup is some how considered as equal to scoring at average of 59 for your entire career.

Smith is better than Kohli in LOIs... We hear such jokes only in PP :D

Smith is an average batsman in ODIs, I don't think he would honestly get in either India or England as a batsman. I guess he could probably replaced Rayudu.

Not disputing any of the facts here about Smith the ODI batsman, but in the milleu of stats I'd just like to throw in an anecdotal piece. In that Quater Final against Pakistan when Wahab was on fire and way too hot to handle for Warner, Clark and Watson, it was Steve Smith's nonchalance batting, as if it was a Sunday League game, that completely took the wind out of Pakistan's sails. He was otherworldly that day, and sensational in the Semi and Final. It didn't matter if they were chasing or setting up a target, Smith bossed it on route to winning that cup.

I guess what I'm trying to say is "he performed in just one world cup" is hardly a negative. If someone offered match winning innings in the quarter, semi, and final of the World cup in exchange of all those chasing centuries against Sri Lanka, Virat would bite his hand off. As would Root, Sachin or Lara. Purely as a cricket fan, it's a shame Smith and Warner won't be in this World Cup. They will be missed.

Bit of context here,

In WC'15 SF, Kohli was chasing an improbable 330. Such a score has never been chased in any world tourney knockouts and will probably never be. Smith had the far easier task of setting the target for India. And the kind of attack Smith's Australia had for that WC, Kohli didn't have any chance to chase that target anyways, while the attack Smith faced was benign to say the least.

In WC'15 Finals, he had to chase 180-odd at home for heaven's sake and he scored an unbeaten 50 to take his team home against a team which was mentally shot anyway for getting dismissed for under 200 score in a WC final.

On the basis of these 2 innings, Smith is a better ODI bat than Kohli!

Didn't know Smith was this bad away. If he can score only on Australian flat beds, then it reaffirms the general consensus of him being vastly inferior batsman to what Kohli the ODI bat is. Hell, there are at least 10 ODI bats who'll be slotted in ahead of him.

He won grand total of one man of the match in that world cup. Starc won man of the series. He just scored along with other Australians. Shikar Dhawan had scored more runs in that world cup than Smith. Atleast 5 people had scored more runs than SMith in the world cup.

Yeah. Just because he scored some relatively pressure free runs in 2 WC knockouts doesn't mean he is a better ODI bat than Kohli.

There are nearly 50 batsmen who was better away average than Smith in ODIs, not kidding. There is a reason people don't rate him in ODIs.

He is a grade A home bully who got lucky last WC was in Australia.

Even in test cricket, Kohli is proving to be a far better overall bat than Smith was. Just that Smith heavily bullied every other team at home, far better than what Kohli did at home.

Kohli is a far better all conditions bat than Smith will ever be.

I agree, Smith only averages 53 away from home, far better than Kohli who averages 46. Smith is only good on home pitches.

lol, its not that all challenging conditions to bat are found away. Way to miss the point.

The way Smith failed in tough SA tracks and the way Kohli trumped them, shows who is better bat in challenging conditions.

Same was true in Eng as well. Whenever ball jagged, Smith did jack. Once it was a flat bed, he scored a double ton, unlike Kohli who failed to cash in only flat deck India got in their series against Eng last year.

For Smith's numbers you also need to add the neutral figures to his away numbers. That leads to an away (away + neutral) average of 50.
