BCCI President Sourav Ganguly is widely regarded as one of India's greatest captains. Ganguly took over the captaincy in the aftermath of a match-fixing scandal that rocked Indian cricket; however, Ganguly led India brilliantly through the transition period and guided the team to many memorable wins throughout his tenure. Under Ganguly, India famously beat Australia 2-1 in the 2001 Test series at home, beat England in the famous NatWest series final in 2002, and a year later, reached the final of the World Cup.

However, Ganguly faced a downfall in 2005 when he was dropped from the Indian team following differences with newly-appointed head coach Greg Chappell. The batter remained out of the side for almost half a year, and during an interview with The Telegraph, Ganguly opened up on his time away from the team as he played in the domestic circuit.

“I don’t think playing domestic cricket was tough but the entire situation was tough because it was something beyond my batting and bowling capabilities,” Ganguly said.

“So I couldn’t control that. I played for India for 13 years without a break before that. I hadn’t missed anything, not a series or tour. I hadn’t taken any rest like a lot of the players do now. So I consider those 4-6 months as a break from my career after those 13 years in an overall career of 17 years at the international level.”

Ganguly said that he was “angry and frustrated” throughout his time away from the team, but insisted that he had to “make a point.” He also denied contemplating to eat sleeping pills during those days.

No, this is not true. But yes I used to get angry and frustrated but worked doubly hard. I was determined to prove myself, to make a point. I knew I had a lot of cricket left in me then. I convinced myself I would prove myself to the men who matter," said the current BCCI President.

On one hand Ganguly feels proud and compare the revenues of IPL with EPL and on the other hand he is complaining about players taking rest from international cricket. Why doesn't he find a middle ground and compensate the players? Especially big players like Kohli, Rohit and Bumrah. Young and not so important players like Pandya and inconsistent players like KL, Pant etc shouldn't take break from international cricket. They should look at a guy like Sachin and get inspiration from him. :inti

No offense ro Dada but his fielding and fitness were a joke, he couldn’t hold a candle to Dravid, Sachin, Azhar.

I remember once he dropped two slip catched back to back that the commentator thought it was the highlight.

Luckily we had Dravid then.

The volume of Cricket has definitely gone up now vs the past. No way could the past players ie batsmen and bowlers have coped up with the workload demands of the modern era

During Ganguly's time, there used to be less cricket. So, rest wasn't necessary.

There's simply way too much cricket nowadays. So, players should be rested to avoid injuries/burnouts.

Happy 50th B'day, Dada! My admiration for this man keeps growing over years. The best Indian captain, in my opinion.

During Chappell’s stint with the Indian team, Ganguly lost the captaincy and also his place in the squad for a while. The highly-publicised episode is being seen as a dark phase but Ganguly has no qualms about it. The BCCI president, who turned 50 on July 8 (Friday), said he wouldn't see it as a "mistake".

In an interview with The Telegraph India, Ganguly said, “This is an after-thought. When you appoint someone, you appoint someone. Then if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. That’s the way life is. So I don’t consider it a mistake."

Ganguly also opened up about the phase where he had to go back to domestic cricket. He saw it as a 'break' after playing international cricket for 13 long years.

“I don’t think playing domestic cricket was tough but the entire situation was tough because it was something beyond my batting and bowling capabilities. So I couldn’t control that. I played for India for 13 years without a break before that. I hadn’t missed anything, not a series or tour. I hadn’t taken any rest like a lot of the players do now. So I consider those 4-6 months as a break from my career after those 13 years in an overall career of 17 years at the international level,” added Ganguly.

The IPL media rights for 2023-27 were sold for ₹48,390 by the BCCI with TV rights accounting for ₹23,575 crore and digital fetching ₹23,758 crore for 410 matches. Ganguly said the board has set a high standard, further explaining how the lucrative T20 league has shaped up Indian cricket.

“Yeah absolutely... we have set the bar high. But you know I feel fortunate that I have been part of this meteoric rise of Indian cricket from Day I. When I started playing cricket there was nothing. Then it went through a transformation phase from 1996... then the IPL happened and the transformation kept continuing.”

"Now as BCCI president, the figure has touched (Rs) 48,390.32 crore. And it’s not just about this. It’s also the (Rs) 12,715 crore the two new franchises fetched... The international broadcast rights are up next year. So it will be close to (Rs) 70,000-75,000 crore. That is huge," said the former India skipper.

Volume of trash cricket has gone up whereas volume of International cricket has gone down. Ganguly was surely talking about international cricket and players taking rest from that.

For example, Sachin played 463 ODIs, 200 tests, used to play county cricket, challenger trophy, exhibition matches, ranji matches as well. Which current indian player can manage all that? :inti

Dravid, Azhar maybe. Tendulkar was barely adequate as a Fielder. Watching him chase a ball to the boundary was comedy

He played fewer games overall but Tests were more intense and competitive.

Well actually compared to Dada he looked like Shaktiman, also Sachin knew his weaknesses and unlike Dada didn’t place himself in first slip if someone better was available.

An interesting and (by some accounts from English county cricket) slightly eccentric chap. No doubting his impact on the game in India.

Happy birthday.

This.

Volume of trash cricket has gone up, that's it. It's upto these whining prima donnas to quit playing 2 months of IPL every years and chance to fatten their already fat purses or quit whining about too much cricket.

Don't worry about the guy, he actually has a huge chip on his shoulder when it comes to Tendulkar.

Ganguly’s international cricket would have ended earlier, but he was blessed with Godfather i.e. Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Jagmohan Dalmiya planned many home tours and very few abroad tours under Ganguly’s leadership which benefited Ganguly lot

Yeah and it didn't benefit India? 🤡 :inti
