It made me think how does there sponsorship basically work? I mean the players themselves are quite rich and buying a pair of pads or gloves is like buying a bottle of water for them! So money is not an issue for them, so why do they use out-dated stuff? See Umar Akmal, he is using last years pads, last years gloves and stickers while new ones are dew in 3-4 months time. Why is that?

I remember 02thoeva telling me that players have accounts with companies for x number of amount where they buy equipments from so I wanted to know isn't the account balance updated every year? If so then why do they use out-dated and previous years stuff ?

Cheers.

maye he just likes them because over time they have moulded to the shape of his legs/hands. Hemight be saving the newer stuff for the bigger matches, he might still be wearing them in.
The account balance thing (if there is one) is probably updated every season

I mean if you talk about gloves designing and everything is the same only thing that has changed is colour scheme, thats it! Everything else is pretty much the same. He does use 2011 LE gloves sometimes but why doesn't he update all of his gloves because he also uses 2009 model.

As far pads are concerned it takes like one net session to get them to break in, they are of same design and fitting won't be different either.

very good points, i can't understand if he is getting this equpment free of charge why doesn't he use lates gear, i also wnat this answered

The Akmals seem to be an exceptional case, all GM sponsored players I can think of have been using the new stuff (apart from Sri Lanka's Jayawardene still using an Apex with 2010 decals).

Another question if he was given new ones why weren't they used ?

A bit off topic but I see GM coming with Trott's bat shape range in 2012.

Doubt it, they might put his name to one of the kids sets like Trescothick and Vaughan but they've never singled out a particular model as one player's. The thing about Watson and the Flare seems just like a coincidence to me due to his recent form.

i think it was a coincidence as well he only got into good form after the flare was released

For the players the most important thing is to feel comfortable with their gear not to look good. It makes fore sense for the sponsors to force the players to use newer stuff.

They get paid by sponsors so they should be doing it I believe.

do you know what it will be called?

Just guessing out of blue.

Maybe they will replace Luna with Trott's bat shape as Trott's shape is low sweetspot.

The sponsors want their brand name in the open, nothing else.

It doesn't matter if he uses 09 gear or '11 gear to them imo, it'd be down to what he's more comfortable with/accustomed to. Sachin used those ancient BDM pads (BDM I think) for years and years. Maybe it's a superstitious thing.

True Poison but if you take Trott this guy wore 2011 stuff in Ashes and is now using 2010 gear, that just doesn't make sense.

Tendulkar have been using Morrant pads for a while at least when I started watching cricket.

Or alternatively ... maybe the gear is just going through customs :yk

CD...I know you are active on other cricket/cricket equipment forums....why dont you ask this question...in fact ask a question "how does player sponsorship work for " so that we know how a vendor(GM/CA/SS) gets in touch with a promising player and how they get him to sign for them...what they offer (any guesstimate)....what possible conditions do they offer a player.....etc etc etc etc..I think asking these questions to a larger audience than what is on PP (and is very Pakistani oriented)...you should get a more knowledgeable response...and then you can post that on PP.

While on the subject of Morrant Pads, I just received a pair. Garbage pads! I have the Morrant Super Ultralite and the 2 calf straps do not fit me. Also the pads feel too stiff and are uncomfortable to have on for more than a few minutes.

He use the International ones they go for like $250!! I had heard good things about Morrant pads, my friend bought them and he too didn't like them found them very stiff and he didn't feel mobil in them

Ok as I have negotiated a couple sponsorship agreements with GM and I have a little knowledge of how they work.

Equipment only sponsorship is for young upcoming players who are on the rise. Usually 2 year deals that GM will supply equipment usually 4 times within the 2 years. GM is the hardest to secure a sponsorship deal from, they supply usually 5 bats, 6 pairs of gloves, 2 huge bags, 3 pairs of pads, 3 full sets of clothing, 3 thigh pads and inner thigh pads and 3 cricket boxes, 2 helmets and 2 t0 3 pairs of shoes but most sponsored guys have deals with Asics.

Any breakages of bats are simply replace but often these guys break their favorite bat so they will refurb and GM will supply a new bat at the same time. When new models are released 5 new bats are sent and old models are restickered and sent back, GM will request that old models are used as net bats. What many sponsored guys do is sell on old models for pocket money.

Sponsorship with endorsement. Ricky Ponting receives $650,000 USD as an endorsement from Kookaburra to use their brand. Ponting used to have his own batmaker make his bat and have the bats stickered up. But this became well known it was rumored that Kook forced him to use the bats coming out of SG and he was none to impressed apparently. Ricky Ponting along with Mike Hussey are bat nerds so very fussy about their bats it is rumored that Ponting will not allow anyone near his kit and Hussey always has a set of electronic scales with him so all bats can be weighed and reweighed.

Shane Watson requests that his bats are big, balanced, pick up and ping he bats at a weight of 2.10 and does not request high grain counts. It is rumored his deal from GM is around $500,000 USD.

GM have different bats for sponsored players then they do for shelf bats at your local store.

The main difference is size, as I have been in possession of there pro bats the grains structure is okay but they are huge for the weight, edges are 35mm but the bats have a massive amount of mass behind the spine but are purely performance bats. They are either over dried or true low density and longevity is not taken into consideration.

The rebound qualities are superb

So this is for young upcoming players... how would they know that and would they only sponsor you at county level or do they supply at club level

I'd be amazed if Shane Watson was on $500,000 AUD considering when he was signed.

CD - feel free to put a list of questions together and email me. You may also get a good input from an agent.

Interesting comments about GM though. I know Puma players have an account, you can use for anything. Trainers, clothing included.

Contract was renewed around 12 months ago

In Aust an emerging player is one that is playing for their State at junior levels through to u/19

^so they younger players get 5/6 bats i would think they would only get 3 at most..........

As you pointed the main difference is size so if you get hold of bat which is huge for its weight then won't that going to be a "pro type bat" ?

Well the off shelves bats will definitely going to have longer life because they don't want peopl ecoming after a season saying this bat is finished etc etc

Cheers for sharing the info though, appreciated :)

Johng, Thanks for your Input!!!! Its very informative! Where are you based?

You probably know of a ex WI player who was netorious for selling his sponsored bat/kit out in market to make money..dont you?

So, Ricky NOW uses bats made by SS stickered under Kook? Was his personal bat maker someone who was from Aus/Eng?

How much is the difference in contract $$ that people in highest category for GM or Kook get like Watson/Ricky and people in lower categories?? I assume it is huge...Like Umar cant be seen as same value for GM as Shane Watson because the audiance that he belongs to and plays cricket for (Pakistan) is not as likely to go and buy GM bats/Products for their domestic cricket needs as the audiance that shane watson represents(Aussie) where someone would like to go ahead and buy GM products..So business wise, if I am GM, there is no way in the world I would offer same amount $$ to Umar that I would to Shane.

Is it the players who offer sponsorship or is it the company?

Or is it both?
Do you mean, does the player come to the company or the company to the player?

Top players usually get offered sponsorships, the rest have their agents do the cold calling to companies to find someone who will sponsor them.

Wow thats peanuts to be honest. This is probably what Shahid Afridi is getting from Boom Boom, Mohammad Yousuf from Gray Nicolls etc etc.

Do you know how much is the figure for English players 02thoeva?

it's well known ghat Salman Butt forced sponsored himself to Adidas. he kinda asked his agent to get on their case.
he even pays for the clothes he wears from Adidas

Where did you learn that...you have any link to back up that claim?

You can get hammer edge sheets separately, so it doesn't necessarily make his bat a Newbery.

probably for protection but he normally uses ss but this isn't an ss maybe he is using newbery
