The 2019-20 Premier League season will start with Champions League winners Liverpool hosting promoted Norwich City on Friday, 9 August.

Champions Manchester City will open the defence of their title the following day with a trip to West Ham.

Aston Villa and Sheffield United, the other promoted teams, play Tottenham and Bournemouth respectively.

For the first time in Premier League history, the clubs will get a short mid-season break in February.

The break will be staggered over a two-week period. There will be only five matches on one weekend, with the other five games from that round taking place the following weekend, ensuring that each team gets one week off.

The opening weekend will also see Manchester United hosting Chelsea on Sunday, 11 August.

Busy start for some teams

The season's curtain raiser will take place with the Community Shield between Liverpool and Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday, 4 August.

Liverpool and Europa League winners Chelsea will also meet in the Uefa Super Cup in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday, 14 August.

Following that match, Liverpool play their second Premier League match, away to Southampton, while Chelsea host Leicester City.

Wolves could have played three Europa League qualifying matches before the beginning of the Premier League season.

The mid-season break in more detail

There will be a total of 380 Premier League games during the 2019-20 season.

The split of matches in February will see five matches take place over the weekend of 8 February, with the other five played on the weekend of 15 February.

All five matches on each weekend will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom.

At present, all the games are scheduled for 8 February but these will be broken up when the broadcast picks for that period are announced in mid-December.

Champions League and Europa League impact

The Premier League contingent taking part in the Champions League are Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham and they will go straight into the group stage, which starts on 17 and 18 September.

Holders Liverpool face top-flight away matches immediately before five of their six Champions League group fixtures, one of which is at Manchester United, while there are four away trips for Chelsea, one of which is at Manchester City.

City will be away three times before playing in Europe, while Tottenham will be on the road for two.

Arsenal and Manchester United go straight into the Europa League group stages, which start on Thursday, 19 September.

The Gunners have away games before four of their six group matches, including ones against Manchester United and West Ham.

Manchester United have three, including a trip to City, while, if they qualify for the group phase, Wolves will also have three.

Any other business?

The first Merseyside derby, which will see Liverpool host Everton during a round of midweek fixtures in early December, will be shown on Amazon TV, a new entrant to the list of broadcasters of top-flight games.

It will also show the Boxing Day list of fixtures and broadcast live in the UK every game over the two rounds to which they have rights.

Video assistant referees (VAR) will debut in the Premier League in the 2019-20 season.

The system was used at the 2018 World Cup, and last season appeared in the Champions League knockout stages and in selected FA Cup and Carabao Cup ties.

So who is (or not) looking forward to this season? and why?

Like it or not, VAR is coming to the Premier League this season.

England's top flight is one of the last high-profile competitions to get on board with the technology.

VAR (video assistant referee system) has been gradually introduced into most major domestic leagues in the world over the past two years and been used in the Champions League from 2017-18, the 2018 World Cup in Russia and this summer's Women's World Cup in France.

Seen by many as a natural and necessary progression for modern football (video replays are already an integral part of sports such as cricket, tennis and both codes of rugby), it also has its detractors, who fear it could slow the game down and reduce its spontaneity and passion.

So what can Premier League fans expect from VAR next season? And how will the league ensure this step into modernity is as seamless and efficient as possible?

BBC Sport answers the important questions.

How will it be different in the Premier League?
We'll assume you know the basics of VAR by now. If not, you can catch up by reading our explainer piece, and by watching the video below.

How does VAR work?
Video caption How does VAR work?
The key thing to know is the Premier League's guiding principle for VAR is that it be used for "clear and obvious errors" and "serious missed incidents" in four types of match-changing incidents:

Goals - whether they should stand or not based on potential violations (fouls, offside, etc) in the build-up.
Penalties - whether the referee has made the correct decision in either awarding one or not.
Straight red cards - did an incident on the pitch receive the correct punishment from the referee?
Mistaken identity - when a referee awards a yellow or red card to the wrong player following an on-field incident.
Keen to preserve the fast pace for which the competition is heralded, the Premier League says that while it will adhere to broader VAR protocol - laid out by world football's law-making body, the International Football Association Board (Ifab) - it has its own nuanced interpretations on the technology's application.

Its aim is to preserve the overriding authority of the on-field referee and achieve "minimum interference" to the game.

Key to both principles is the ongoing, match-long dialogue between the on-field official and their video assistant, much of which occurs in the background without players or supporters being overtly aware.

VAR automatically checks all key incidents during a game, but the video officials' role will be informed by their on-field colleague, who describes to them what they have seen and why they have reached their conclusion.

It is only if the replays show a different version of events to that described by the on-field referee that the VAR team will step in. The on-field referee will then decide whether to accept and act on the VAR official's view of the incident. This may involve the use of the pitch-side monitor, although the Premier League says this will be used sparingly, for incidents either not seen by the on-field ref or for those outside of their expected range.

VAR reviews in FA Cup matches in England 2018-19 (69 games)
Reviews Average time for review (seconds)
Goals 6 83
Penalties 6 85
Reds cards 2 82
Mistaken identity 0 -
Total 14 84
For offsides, the Premier League is advising assistant referees to flag for clear incidents, but to keep their flag down for tight calls, knowing these will be corrected by VAR should it be required. This should theoretically cut down on attacking sides being wrongly denied a goalscoring opportunity.

In short, the addition of VAR does not alter one of football's golden rules: play to the whistle.

Speaking of which, if a half finishes on a contentious moment that may need a review, referees have been instructed not to blow the half-time/full-time whistle as they normally would - instead there will be one blow on the whistle to indicate a check is under way and play has been halted.

This is intended to avoid a scenario similar to the incident in Germany when a penalty was awarded after the players had already left the pitch for half-time, resulting in the two sides being called back out of the dressing rooms in order for the spot-kick to be taken.

In a move that indicates a willingness for greater transparency, the Premier League will also be the first competition to show replays on big screens once a VAR review process is complete, to ensure supporters in the stadium are as informed as those watching at home. The replay will only be shown if the original decision is overturned. Which brings us to...

How will the viewing experience change?
All 20 Premier League grounds have the technology that allows decisions to be assessed from the VAR hub in Stockley Park, west London.

This will lead to changes in the viewing experience for fans:

Television - Viewers will be able to see what the video assistant referees watches, including an 'over the shoulder' angle of the officials in the studio. The VAR team will be announced in advance, as per the on-field refereeing group. Broadcasters will be keen matches do not extend too much more than the regular 90 minutes plus added time.
Stadium - Information about a VAR check will appear on the big screens at the 18 grounds equipped with them. e.g. 'Checking red card'. When a decision is overturned, a video replay of the incident will be shown when appropriate - the Premier League will be the first competition to do this. At the two grounds which do not have screens - Anfield (Liverpool) and Old Trafford (Manchester United), announcements will be made via the scoreboard and PA.
Supporters will also notice signs in the stadium and from the referee to indicate VAR reviews are taking place, from subtle to more formal ones.

What about goalkeepers moving off their line during penalties?
Ifab introduced a new law shortly before this summer's Women's World Cup on the issue of goalkeeper encroachment at penalties.

It stated keepers must have at least one foot on the goalline when a penalty is taken or, if they are jumping at the time of contact, have one foot in line with it. Infringing this rule resulted in a retaken penalty, a booking for the keeper and a lot of confusion and controversy.

Dramatic scenes as VAR penalty retake sends Scots home
Video caption Dramatic scenes as VAR penalty retake sends Scots home
However, the Premier League will not be enforcing this in the same way for the coming season, instead only relying on VAR if the on-field officials fail to spot:

a significant movement by the keeper off their line
an encroachment by other players that has a direct impact on the outcome of the kick
if the penalty taker makes a double-touch or feigns at the point of striking the ball
Any other business?
Yes, players could also be disciplined as a result of VAR reviews that indicate simulation, deliberate handball, serious foul play or denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

They could also be punished by the referee for aggressively indicating a VAR review should be undertaken (e.g. making the box shape with their hands to an official) or interrupting the review process in any way.

Any member of either side's technical staff who enters the pitch-side monitor area will be immediately sent to the stands, and any player on the bench doing so will be shown a yellow card.

Clubs can still appeal against a VAR decision but there will be a high threshold for winning those appeals.

With all managers and captains having been briefed by the Premier League on exactly how VAR will be implemented in the division, it is hoped such disciplinary aspects will be kept to a minimum.

So why all the controversy in the past?
VAR in England - the story so far
Video caption VAR in England - the story so far
There are those who are simply opposed to VAR in principle, feeling that it strips the game of the human element - mistakes and all - that makes it so compelling.

Criticism has also been aimed at the delays it imposes on the game while a decision is being reached and the reticence it instils in players and fans to celebrate a goal with the same raw passion when they know it could be ruled out on review.

Also, the integration of VAR into the game has not been without its teething problems as football authorities work out the best way to use it and officials gain the experience of working with it.

In addition, the nature of football dictates subjectivity will always remain for some incidents. So while offsides, for example, are more straightforward black or white decisions, the severity of a foul or the intent of a handball have shades of grey, as Paris St-Germain know only too well after their Champions League elimination by Manchester United last season.

There could be a situation whereby a similar type of incident, such as a bad tackle, could occur simultaneously in two different games, with one receiving a yellow card and the other a red. Neither decision would be wrong.

The Premier League admits this subjectivity makes the eradication of controversy impossible, as is the achievement of 100% accuracy on decisions.

But with the lessons learned from two years of monitoring VAR and a willingness to evolve its approach to the technology, the Premier League now feel it is in a good place to introduce it effectively.

Decent win for us today. But was a bit worrying how easily Norwich could get past our defence. Still we're only gonna get stronger now since we finally have everyone together after a disrupted pre season.

Manchester City began their quest for a third successive Premier League title with a resounding win at West Ham in a game that saw the video assistant referee play a significant role.

VAR, introduced to the Premier League for the first time this season, was used several times as Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick while Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero, from a retaken penalty, also netted in a 5-0 victory for the champions.

Harry Kane twice struck late as Tottenham overcame resilient Aston Villa 3-1 at the Tottenham Stadium. Spurs, who finished fourth last season, fell behind to a ninth-minute John McGinn goal before they equalised courtesy of a brilliant strike from their £53m club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele.

Kane, who scored 17 league goals last season, fired in two goals in the final four minutes to earn Tottenham an opening weekend victory.

Sheffield United, who were playing in League One as recently as 2017, marked their return to the Premier League after a 12-year absence with a spirited 1-1 draw at Bournemouth, Billy Sharp scoring an 88th-minute equaliser to cancel out Chris Mepham's first goal for the Cherries.

Everton, who have made some significant signings this summer, including Arsenal's Alex Iwobi and Italy forward Moise Kean, were held to a goalless draw at Crystal Palace.

Everton's Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off in the 76th minute, while Wilfried Zaha started on Palace's bench after missing out on a move before the summer transfer deadline.

Brighton, who finished two points above the relegation zone last season, got off to a flying start under new boss Graham Potter.

They won 3-0 at last season's FA Cup runners-up Watford - an own goal by Abdoulaye Doucoure, plus strikes by Florin Andone and new signing Neal Maupay sealing the points.

Burnley also won 3-0 at home to Southampton, Ashley Barnes with two goals and Johann Berg Gudmundsson the other.

There are three games on Sunday, including Manchester United against Chelsea at Old Trafford (16:30) in Frank Lampard's first league match in charge of the Blues.

Before that, Newcastle entertain Arsenal (14:00) at the same time as Wolves play at Leicester.

Yeah definitely Matip should have started. He was playing at a similar level to VVD at the back end of last season and even in the community shield he looked solid when he came on. Wouldn't be surprised though if next game Trent is replaced by Gomez at RB and Matip returns with Virgil. We're gonna have to be much tighter at the back since Allison could be out for a while.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche says players "can cheat at least once a game" as he criticised the Premier League's rules on simulation after defeat at Arsenal.

Dyche, a long-standing advocate of harsher punishments for diving, believes the threat of a yellow card does not offer enough of a deterrent.

On the changes he would like to see, Dyche said: "Simple. Ban them. It would be out of football within a month.

"It's not about Arsenal. It's about the greater good of the game."

Aubameyang scores winner for Arsenal against Burnley
Speaking after the 2-1 defeat, Dyche - who did not single out any Arsenal player - said he attended a recent Premier League meeting where, regarding simulation, he was told "the worst that can happen is a yellow card".

He added: "Have you ever thought about that? I don't know any sport where they tell you that you can cheat once a game. I've never seen that in sport before.

"The game is in a really poor state with players literally falling on the floor. If you're a manager, why would you want to lose your best players? It's got to the level where it's every week now."

In 2015 Dyche claimed one prominent manager told him to "move with the times" when it came to diving in the modern game, while in 2016 the Clarets boss called for retrospective bans which would eradicate diving from football "in six months".

Left frustrated, a year later he claimed "no-one cares" about trying to eradicate diving from English football - and last season added "no-one wants to deal with it".

On Saturday he said: "I'm the only one who ever talks about it. I find that really weird.

"Tony Adams, when he was captain here (at Arsenal). Can you imagine? Do you think he would have accepted it? Do you think he would have accepted it if it was his own players, let alone the opposition? I doubt it."

Its Aston Villa v Everton this evening....

Aston Villa collected their first Premier League points of the season as goals from Wesley and Anwar El Ghazi gave them victory over Everton.

Brazilian Wesley, who arrived from Bruges for a club record fee, opened his account in English football with a close-range effort from Jota's incisive pass.

El Ghazi sealed victory late on after collecting John McGinn's pass and sliding a shot underneath Jordan Pickford from six yards out.

The result lifts Dean Smith's side up to 11th in the table and gives Villa their first win in the top flight since February 2016.

Substitute Alex Iwobi went closest to scoring for Everton, driving a low effort against the right-hand post at 1-0.

However, it was a largely frustrating evening for Marco Silva's side with Theo Walcott also spurning a glorious 89th minute chance to equalise from a right-foot volley.

Villa drawing on 'togetherness' at club, says boss Smith
Everton toil at both ends
With four points from their opening two fixtures of the season, Everton's undefeated start to the campaign had been constructed on their collective solidity rather than attacking verve.

However, Villa's opening goal was a result of a breakdown in communication and a disregard of defensive duties.

Andre Gomes, who joined the Blues permanently from Barcelona in July, and Michael Keane were both culpable.

Caught out of position by Jack Grealish's quickly taken free-kick, the Portugal midfielder allowed Jota both the time and space to slide a pass through the Everton defence.

Keane's sluggish reaction then compounded matters, with the England defender allowing Wesley to run across him and put the ball past a helpless Pickford from seven yards.

While Silva's side were slick in possession, there was a noticeable absence of attacking threat to their play.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin wasted a glorious opportunity to equalise at 1-0, firing a shot straight at Villa's Belgian defender Bjorn Engels.

And while the second-half introduction of Moise Kean, Iwobi and Walcott provided more thrust and pace, the latter's late miss with the goal gaping summed up an evening in which they only managed a single shot on target.

Jota and McGinn excel for Villa
Successive defeats have delivered a tough period of acclimatisation for Aston Villa who returned to the top flight this summer after three years in the Championship.

With individual errors rather than poor performances depriving Villa of points, this fixture was a test of their nerve and concentration.

Repeatedly cut open in the early stages, Smith's side found discipline and shape before Jota was the catalyst for an upturn in their fortunes.

Exerting his influence from the right, the 28-year-old Spaniard's presence of mind and ability to retain possession halted Everton's dominance.

A delicious pass to Wesley brought the opening goal and three minutes later he again carved the visiting defence apart, sliding the ball behind Keane and Yerry Mina to create another opening for the Brazilian.

Not to be outdone his fellow midfielder McGinn produced a superbly weighted pass for El Ghazi's goal in added time.

Man of the match - Jota (Aston Villa)

'It's difficult to see how we lost'- what they said

Everton boss Marco Silva, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is really difficult to see how we can lose this game when we create so many chances to score.

"We started well and controlled the game with some dangerous moments around their box. The first time they went in our box they scored.

"We spoke during the week that Villa like to play fast set-pieces and they did that and we switched off. In the first moment it was 1-0.

"It is concerning about the goals we didn't score and of course we should score more. Against Palace we created lots of chances to score and didn't and again today."

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith told BBC Sport: "I am more pleased to get the first points in the Premier League. Our performances have been OK, Tottenham was tough first up and we were good for an hour. We played well against Bournemouth and from the supporters there is a lot of optimism. They stuck right behind us. Everton started brighter but it was a good performance to get the win.

"We have had a bit of fortune, they have missed two big chances form inside the box and Theo Walcott shot over. I always felt we were a threat on the counter and we broke at pace. They play a higher line and we used that well."

Smith breaks Premier League duck - the stats
Aston Villa ended a run of 15 Premier League games without a win (W0 D1 L14). This was their first top-flight victory since beating Norwich City 2-0 in February 2016.
Everton suffered only their third Premier League defeat in their past 14 matches in the competition (W7 D4 L3).
Aston Villa manager Dean Smith enjoyed his first win against Premier League opposition - as a manager, Smith had lost all eight of his previous games against top-flight opponents across spells at Walsall, Brentford and Aston Villa.
Everton have lost back to back Premier League games against newly promoted opponents (also 2-0 v Fulham in April) for the first time since August 2011.
Jota has been involved in 21 goals in 32 league appearances under manager Smith across his spells at Brentford and Aston Villa (12 goals, nine assists).

What's next?
Aston Villa visit Crewe in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday (19:45 BST) and then go to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday, 31 August (15:00).

Everton travel to Lincoln in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (19:45 BST) before resuming their Premier League duties at home to Wolves on Sunday, 1 September (14:00).

Liverpool vs Arsenal reaction: Jurgen Klopp beaming, David Luiz questions penalty decision

Jurgen Klopp hailed Liverpool's "power, energy, greed and passion" in the win over Arsenal while David Luiz questioned whether his shirt pull was a penalty.

Liverpool moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League as Joel Matip's header late in the first half gave the home side the lead before Mohamed Salah took the game away from the Gunners with two goals early in the second period.

Klopp was delighted with the level his side played at in the 3-1 win so early in the season.

"We were full of power, energy and greed, passion - all what you need to have against a good team like Arsenal," he told Sky Sports.

"We were surprised by the system they played and we adapted pretty well to that.

"We were a bit too greedy and didn't split the runs a bit, which we talked about, but overall we were really in charge of the game.

"We should have kept the ball better because they did not attack us really.

"But we are not Disneyland so that we have to excite everybody in each second of the game. It was intense, and yes our decision-making could be better.

"The boys, though, did what we wanted them to do, and scored wonderful goals.

"The work rate of the boys was just exceptional. Our identity is intensity and that is how the boys showed up today."

The result was still in the balance at the break with Arsenal just 1-0 down but that changed when David Luiz pulled Salah back to prevent him latching onto Roberto Firmino's clever through-ball.

Luiz felt the tug on Salah's shirt wasn't enough to merit a penalty being awarded.

He told Sky Sports: "It was a reflex. I didn't use any power - I ask Mo Mo (Salah) and he said he didn't feel anything, that's why he didn't go down to the floor.

"But now we have VAR, you can't see the power and it's difficult for the referees. He saw the shirt being pulled, I can't complain, it is difficult for them. If you play with an extra large shirt it could be a penalty every time. It's interpretation. If you pull someone with power and you change their trail to the ball it's different. It was just a reflex.

"He gave me a yellow card and I couldn't make a foul on Salah for the third goal and put my team in trouble. My game was more difficult after that."

Premier League clubs: Transfer window deadline talks next month

Premier League clubs intend to discuss whether to change the deadline of the summer transfer window next month, Sky Sports News understands.

This summer's window closed at 5pm on August 8, just over 24 hours before the opening game of the season between Liverpool and Norwich at Anfield.

There is no suggestion a formal vote will take place next month, with the most likely date for any vote at their get-together in November, or in the New Year.

In 2017, Manchester City, Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Watford and Swansea voted against the dates of the present transfer window.

Fourteen clubs voted in favour of a change, and Burnley abstained.

European leagues did not follow suit and some clubs have grown increasingly frustrated as sides, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, have targeted some of their top players.

Under Premier League rules, eleven clubs - a majority - are required to change the date and time of summer transfer windows.

In 2017, fourteen clubs were required to agree to changes and one source has told Sky Sports News that might be the preferred number of clubs.

It is claimed FIFA would prefer a single deadline day across Europe, but have so far not been able to push through any significant changes.

Several managers, including Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, have made it clear they want the early closure of the Premier League window to be scrapped.

"I don't care when it closes, I only think it must close at the same time," said Klopp.

"You want a team not only together but together and focused on the future, but that is not possible as long as there is a door open.

"I don't understand why this decision is not already reviewed at least. At first it was a good idea but it didn't work out so let's change it again."

Pochettino says closing the English transfer window early is "a massive mistake".

The Tottenham manager is still sweating over the future of Christian Eriksen, who has 12 months to run on his contract, with the Denmark midfielder understood to be keen on a move to Spain.

"I think he [Daniel Levy] and a lot of people now realise it was a massive mistake," said Pochettino.

"I hope that we fix the problem for the next season.

"We need to go back and operate in the same way that they operate in Europe because I think it's massive when you go to compete in the Europa League or Champions League."

Thought the transfer window was closed? Wrong. Across Europe, plenty of deals are still being done, with Premier League players still able to move to the continent.

The transfer window for Spain's La Liga, Italy's Serie A, Germany's Bundesliga and France's Ligue 1 closes at varying times on Monday, September 2. Meanwhile, League One, League Two and Scottish clubs can also do deals until September 2.

De Bruyne poked home David Silva's square pass to break the deadlock, with Sergio Aguero extended City's lead with two sublime goals.

Second-half substitute Bernardo Silva scored with his second touch to seal victory for Pep Guardiola's side.

However, City defender Aymeric Laporte will be out "for a while" after being stretchered off with a knee injury.

City are second in the Premier League table, two points behind Liverpool, who beat Burnley 3-0 to continue their 100% winning start to the season.

A fluke own goal from Chris Wood - the ball deflecting in from range off his back - set the Reds on their way, with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino scoring the others.

Elsewhere, Sheffield United recovered from two goals down to claim an impressive 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

A clinical first-half double from Tammy Abraham appeared to have put the Blues on course for victory, but Callum Robinson's first goal for the Blades and Kurt Zouma's late own goal earned Chris Wilder's side a point.

In the day's early game, Manchester United had to settle for a 1-1 draw against 10-man Southampton at St Mary's.

A superb Daniel James strike - his third of the campaign - gave United the lead, but Jannik Vestergaard's towering second-half header salvaged a point for the Saints, who held on for a draw despite Kevin Danso's dismissal for a second bookable offence.

Sebastien Haller scored his third goal in two games as West Ham beat Norwich 2-0 at the London Stadium to extend their unbeaten league run to three games.

Haller, a summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt, slid home after fine work from Arthur Masuaku, and Andriy Yarmolenko scored the second with a left-footed volley.

Jamie Vardy scored his second and third goals of the season as Leicester City extended their unbeaten start with a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy's outstanding lob over Cherries goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale put the Foxes in front, but Callum Wilson's first goal of the campaign levelled matters.

Youri Tielemans restored the hosts' lead late in the first half before setting up Vardy's second as Brendan Rodgers' team moved into the top four.

Jordan Ayew's instinctive finish earned Crystal Palace a 1-0 win against Aston Villa, who had Trezeguet dismissed for a second bookable offence nine minutes after the break.

The victory moves Palace up to fourth in the table, with two wins, a draw and a defeat from their four games so far.

Watford claimed their first point of the campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Will Hughes steered Tom Cleverley's deflected effort past Martin Dubravka to put the visitors ahead inside two minutes, but Fabian Schar's first goal of the season earned Steve Bruce's side a point.

Everton take on Wolverhampton Wanderers (14:00 BST) and Arsenal host Tottenham Hotspur (16:30 BST) in the north London derby on Sunday.

Arsenal vs Spurs preview

TEAM NEWS
Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has Mesut Ozil available for the first time this season.

Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney will not return to full training until mid-September, while this game comes too soon for Rob Holding to return.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is expected to have Dele Alli back in his squad following a hamstring injury.

However, Kyle Walker-Peters has joined Juan Foyth, Tanguy Ndombele and Ryan Sessegnon on the sidelines.

Eric Dier is also nursing a hip problem and will be monitored.

MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES
Jonathan Pearce: The perfect red-hot game to bring the season to a boil for these two after lukewarm starts.

If Arsenal risk playing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe up front they could really threaten Tottenham's far from formidable defence. But that could leave them lacking numbers when Spurs counter and the Gunners defence lacked leadership and quality at Liverpool.

Having been beaten by Palace in their last home London league derby, Arsenal could lose two on the bounce for the first time since 2006. Spurs are chasing back-to-back wins there for the first time since the 1920s.

Pepe can certainly open his account. But take Harry Kane to equal the north London derby scoring record with his 10th goal in a draw that will leave more questions than answers.

VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT
Arsenal head coach Unai Emery: "Matches like last week against Liverpool, this week against Tottenham, they are the two teams who played the final of the Champions League. It's amazing and is the best test.

"Every time is a good time to play against them with our supporters. Maybe this match on Sunday is the best match in the world [this weekend] for all football supporters."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino on rumours he is set to quit: "What can I say about stupid rumours?

"After five years now I start my sixth season. You know how we worked this summer to rebuild and update because from each summer, version 2.0, 3.0 - now we're version 6.0 MP software.

"Only social media can create something that stupid.

"I will not walk away after Sunday's game. I will be working Monday and Tuesday and then going away for a few days and coming back to meet Daniel [Levy] and watch some internationals.

"Do you bet? It's closed now! You lose your money!"

LAWRO'S PREDICTION
What has happened to Tottenham? They are there with four points but they were totally unconvincing against Newcastle.

I thought Arsenal were naive against Liverpool and I am sorry but a defence with David Luiz in it isn't going to get you top three.

Prediction: 1-1

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

Tottenham have only won two of their 27 Premier League away matches versus Arsenal, in May 1993 and November 2010.
Spurs won 2-0 at the Emirates in the League Cup last December. In all competitions, Spurs have won consecutive away matches at Arsenal just once, in 1925 and 1926.
The 18 penalties scored in this fixture is the joint highest in Premier League history along with Everton against Newcastle United.
This is the 186th north London derby. Arsenal have won 77 times, Tottenham 58 with 50 draws.

Arsenal

The Gunners have won more Premier League games (60) and have a higher win rate (61%) than any other side in games played in September.
They also haven't lost a north London derby in September since 1969, winning six and drawing four of 10 such meetings in all competitions.
Arsenal have given away eight Premier League penalties since the start of last season - only Brighton (10) have conceded more.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored just three goals in 14 league games against sides from the established top six. In matches against other clubs he has scored 31 times in 38 matches.
Arsenal have attempted 28 shots in the Premier League this season - only Crystal Palace (16) and Newcastle United (25) registered fewer in the opening three rounds.

Tottenham

Spurs have won only three of their last 12 matches in all competitions and seven of their last 21. They have taken just 15 points from their last 15 league games.
They are without an away win in the league for seven matches, their worst run since December 2011 to April 2012.
Tottenham and Watford are the only two sides to have conceded first in all three of their league games so far this season. The last time Spurs did so in their first four Premier League matches of a season was in 2008-09.
Harry Kane's record of nine goals in north London derbies is bettered only by Emmanuel Adebayor and Bobby Smith (both with 10 goals).
Christian Eriksen is one goal away from becoming the fifth player to score 50 in the Premier League for Tottenham. However, he has not scored in any of his 11 league appearances against Arsenal, his worst record against any English club.

Guido Carrillo: Southampton striker returns to Leganes on loan

Southampton striker Guido Carrillo has returned to Spanish side Leganes on a season-long loan.

The Argentine, 28, joined Southampton in January 2018 in what was then a club record £19m deal, but has only made 10 appearances for the Saints.

He spent last season on loan at Leganes, scoring six goals in 33 games.

The La Liga side's manager is former Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino, who also worked with Carrillo at Argentine club Estudiantes.
