Opening batsman Prithvi Shaw, who had missed the first two Tests against Australia with injury, has now been ruled out of the rest of the series.

Mayank Agarwal has been called up as his replacement.

Shaw sustained his injury while fielding during a tour game against a Cricket Australia XI. He hurt his ankle attempting to take a boundary catch. It had been hoped he would regain fitness for the latter stages of the series, but it has now been confirmed that he will miss the duration.

The news will come as a blow to India, with the 19-year-old Shaw having impressed on his early forays into the Test arena; his first two Test innings brought him 204 runs, including a 99-ball century on debut. India's opening pair, KL Rahul and Murali Vijay, have struggled in his absence, with neither having hit a half-century in their combined eight innings in the first Two Tests.

Shaw's replacement, Agarwal, is yet to make his Test debut, but is experienced at the domestic level. He averages 50.30 in first-class cricket, with a high score of 304 not out. He also struck a half-century in his most recent first-class innings, for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy.

The second Test is ongoing, with India requiring 175 runs with five wickets in hand heading into the final day at Perth.

Desperate times call for desperate measures: send an SOS for Dhawan!

Right now I would bring back sehwag and gambhir rather than play vijay and rahul another game.

How we managed to screw it up that badly in the first innings after the start we had i will never understand.

And then topped it off by declaring late in both innings at the SCG.

Sachin had some interesting criticism of Dravid in particular that series.

That Australian team was capable of making such come backs. They had too many good players and pressure of playing such a quality side would eventual take its toll on the opposition.

Big loss.

I will play this XI in MCG:

Bhuvi
Ashwin
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Vihari
Pant
Jadeja
Ishant
Shami
Bumrah

Bhuvi and Ash will outperform our current opening pair 9/10 times. Also since Kohli doesn't know how to read pitches we will have 6 bowlers, 4 quicks and Ash/Jaddu. So much flexibility for our captain and also a better batting side.

What a let down, seriously Rahul has really been worse than Uthappa!

This is a huge blow to Indian batting prospects for the rest of the series. The openers set the tone for the innings and our current pair blows big time.

For the next test, I'd get Rohit to open in place of Rahul and replace one Yadav (Umesh) with another (Kuldeep) in the XI.

It's funny. In ODI cricket all we have is openers while in tests we have no openers at all.

Makes you wonder if we can roll the dice and play Rohit and Dhawan as openers in our test team as a possible solution?

May be but we had the ATG Middle order, we should not have scored less than 500.

Wasn't Ganguly the captain? Can't really criticize the decision given how many aussies managed not to mention the smashing kartik received in the first innings.

According to Sachin's boook Ganguly left it to Dravid and Sachin to decide, and Dravid was gunning for the ton. Only gave up when he got hit on the helmet at 92* and would have had to retire hurt.

Sachin then was predictably angry 3 months later when Dravid needlessly declared with Sachin at 194*.

Did not know that, but again can't really blame the decision given what came before and after. 50 less runs and who knows what might have happened we could have easily lost, don't really think the declaration time had much of an effect as india scored at nearly 5 an over.

We have one long-term option in Shaw. The search for a left-handed opener continues. I've no confidence in Dhawan to open in SENA conditions.

Has Shaw's replacement Mayank Agarwal ever played any form of cricket on Australian soil? Can the management risk playing him in the Boxing Day Test?

He's been playing FC and LA games with the A team in New Zealand.

At this point anything will do to be honest.

Out of box thinking . But you know what . It sounds like good idea as of now

The really sad part is what we will pick will be worse than this and this is just plain bizarre selection.

Actually considering the opportunity cost is 0-10 runs, it's not much of a risk anyway to try out Mayank. What worse could Mayank do, he can't score less than 0 runs. Unless Mayank is a lunatic who can smash his teammates with bat, I will certainly play him.

What happened to Karun Nair??

The triple centurion?

Pity , would have been great learning for young gun against this quality attack .

Looking at the brighter side, developing batsmen can look forward to another masterclass on opening your batting from KL Rahul 🤬🤬

Rohit Sharma
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Vihari
Pant
jadeja
Ashwin
Shami
ishant
Shami

India should play this game in next test

Lolz :yk

KL Rahul is a lucky guy and should grab this opportunity and score a daddy 100.

Hardik coming back is huge for India. A legitimate pace bowler and a bat lower down the order. Basically India shortens its tail without dropping a bowler.
