PSL Season 11 Potential Retention Thoughts?

Reports are that 2 more teams will be added and current 6 teams will be allowed to retain upto 3 players - though they are fighting to retain 5.

If only 3 players are allowed to be retained. Who should each team retain?
 
I’ll do 1 each Pakistani retention first

1. Nawaz (qg)
2. Saim (PZ)
3. Sahibzada (IU)
4. Shaheen (LQ)
5. Khushdil (KK)
6. Yasir Khan (MS)

That’s the best Pakistan players in each team who they most certainly will retain.
 
Top 2 players in each team

Quetta: Abrar
Lahore: Naeem
Karachi: Hasan Ali
Multan: Shahid Aziz/Ubaid Shah
Islamabad: Shadab Khan
Peshawar: Ali Raza/Muqeem
 
Quetta: Hassan Nawaz
Lahore: Sikandar Raza and Naeem
Peshawar: Muqeem
Islamabad: Salman Agha and Holder
Karachi: David Warner, Vince
 
LQ should remain almost unchanged in my opinion. They had a very balanced side.
 
LQ: Shaheen, Fakhar and Naeem
KK: Warner, Vince and Khusdil
PZ: Babar, Saim and M. Haris/Ali Raza
IU: Salman, Shadab and Farhan
QG: Hasan, Abrar and Finn/Roussouw

Babar maybe controversial, but he can still play as a batsman and that too at 3

Just get rid of him from captaincy

Proud to say finally pakistan is producing some batting talent suited to modern day cricket.

Unless PSL is shifting back to its Feb window. Retaining foreigners is a big risk because their commitment can dwindle if they get picked for IPL.

Even then rarely a foreigner sticks for many years to one franchise.

I think going for younger players and your long-term captain is a better option for retention. Something like this;

KK: Niazi, Hasan and Khushdil
LQ: Afridi, Abdullah and Fakhar
QG: Hassan, Abrar and Nafay
PZ: Saim, Haris and Babar
IU: Shadab, Salman and Farhan
MS: Yasir, Rizwan and Ubaid

Based on the guidelines that the original 6 teams are allowed to retain a max of 4 players (one each per category across 5 categories), Karachi must pick only 3 players, if they’re smart:

Diamond : Abbas Afridi
Gold : Arafat Minhas
Emerging : Saad Baig

They shouldn’t pick Hasan Ali as a platinum pick and use that money wisely in the auction. Amongst Diamond, not picking Shan should be a no-brainer.

Amongst the Gold picks, they may also go for Irfan Niazi, who isn’t a terrible choice, but Arafat Minhas gives you a young allrounder option. I hope they don’t go the Khushdil Shah route. Picking Saad Baig sorts out their keeper issue.
 
Thus, I believe ISLU should pick the following 4:

Platinum : Shadab
Gold : Azam Khan
Silver : Hunain Shah
Emerging : Mohammad Shahzad

They’re losing a lot of players because of the retention rules, but I think the above is a decent core. They could even forgo the silver pick. I would have picked Saad Masood in the emerging, but they already have a leggie in Shaddy.
 
Lahore is another interesting one that’ll lose some big players:

Platinum : SSA
Diamond : Abdullah Shafique
Silver : Mohammad Naim
Emerging: Momin Qamar

LQ always back themselves to unearth bowling talent, the above choices allows them to retain their main batting talent, keep the captain and a very bright chinamen bowler.
 
Peshawar certainly have decisions to make!

For me it’s easy:

Platinum: Saim Ayub
Diamond: Sufyan Muqeem (he’s weirdly also listed in the Gold category)
Gold: Mohammad Haris
Emerging : Maaz Sadaqat

Let’s see if they release Babar. They’ll also have to release one of Ali Raza and Maaz, which is tough on them.
 
Quetta have also been dealt a tricky hand w/ the categories:

Platinum : Faheem
Diamond : Usman Tariq
Gold : Khawaja Nafay
Emerging : Shamyl Hussain

It was tough choice between Usman Tariq and Waz Jr but there will be enough quicks in the auction for Quetta.

Remember, the trick is always to retain young impactful local batters and keepers, as these are in short supply.
 
Lastly, Multan:

Diamond: Usman Khan
Gold: Faisal Akram
Silver: Ubaid Shah
Emerging: Shahid Aziz

The other preferable choice in silver was Yasir Khan.

Given how bad they were last season and their retention choices, would not be surprised to see Rizwan get picked in platinum, even though it would be a risky pick. They would do better than to just pick Usman, Ubaid, Faisal and use their money in the auction.

Look at karachi squad and you will see all retired or out of team players while you look ar islamabad it's just international team....
 
Quetta looks like it will have the toughest choice for the retentions.

The categories seem mostly fair I'd say.

Karachi needs to the retain the following:
- Abbas Afridi
- Minhas
- Saad Baig

At least this gives you a foundation of young players to build around. Hasan Ali will probably be kept too.

Peshawar are in an excellent spot their retentions as long as they don't mess it up by keeping Babar around.
Saim/Sufiyan/Haris/Maaz are easy calls IMO. It sets your top order with only needing to draft middle order batsmen & pacers.

Sultan looks to be in the worst spot with their set of retentions/core. Better draft well I suppose.
 
Must say IU seems very hard done by with the retention categories. Even Agha is a platinum. They made everyone a platinum to the point where they don't even have a player in the diamond category.

It also seems insane that Farhan went from an unpicked player to eventually a supplementary add to platinum all within a year. For future, to better help teams retain talent they found/developed, the maximum amount a player should be able to jump up within a category should be two at most. So players in silver/emerging can't jump all the way to a platinum within a year.

Either way, plenty of talent will be available and teams will change significantly which is exciting. Karachi has a chance to get out of being a constant mess. Multan seemed completely for the foreseeable future with essentially zero talent and a core of old washed up players but they'll have a big chance to completely rejuvenate themselves as well.

I think the PCB can do a massive favour by retaining Rizwan and benching him for the whole season

This guy going to a new franchise will wriggle his way into captaincy and then destroy the careers of many cricketers with his policies to suit himself
 
Glen Maxwell has refused psl direct offer approaches ie I want a break from cricket and want to spend more time with my family, this is why I skipped the IPL this year.

He will most probably be un retained if new owner choose themselves and then in auction he will also go unpicked....

This is a good point

It might devalue the Sultans ownership at the auction

Why would you want to bid high for a franchise with Rizwan already in it?
