PTI announces mass resignations from National Assembly

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Imran Khan has reportedly decided to tender his resignation as a member of the National Assembly ahead of the election for the new prime minister of Pakistan.

The decision was reportedly made during the PTI's parliamentary party meeting.

Sources privy to the matter quoted Khan as saying: "We will not sit in this Assembly under any circumstances." He said that PTI will not sit in the Assembly with the people who have robbed Pakistan and who have been "imported by foreign forces".

"We have made this decision to keep the institutions under pressure who want this government to run the country [...] we will not let them continue."

However, sources said that most of the parliamentary party members opposed Khan's decision to tender resignations, and instead, advised that they should not leave the field empty and face the Opposition strongly at every front.

At this, Khan said if none of the parliamentarians resign, he "will be the first member to resign from the assembly.”

After this, all the members consented to the decision, saying that Khan has the authority to order them to resign.

He further stated that the entire country saw the power of PTI Sunday night.

In another major development, the PTI has also decided to boycott the election of the prime minister for which they have nominated former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry, while speaking to Geo News, said that all the members will hand down their resignations to NA Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri, who will also resign from his post after accepting the resignations.

A lot has been happening in Pakistan politics in a very short time. Please also remember that this is all unfolding during Ramadan where such scenes are unprecedented.

Someone would have to step in before these protests go ugly. In a country like Pakistan ugly protests would spread like wildfire and can impact our national security. All the talk of constitutional NCM sounds good on a dining table meet but when things start burning outside you need to take decisions in the betterment of the country.

It can work, it all depends on the court of public opinion on how strongly it is with IK right now. If the protests snowball into a Euromaidan or Tahrir square style public movement, it will be hard for the new government to deny holding fresh elections.

On the other hand if its a party led protest every few days, then that wont be enough to move the needle.

The bill to use EVMs and overseas voting rights was signed by the President on Dec 3rd 2021. ECP officials didn't even attend the ceremony for it, eventhough they were invited.
The election supervisor was told to start acquiring EVM machines. Now on April 7th the SC spoke with the ECP spokesperson in the NCM Suo Moto case to ask about preparation of elections. To which they responded they need another 7 months.
Add the 7 months to the 3 and half they wasted since Dec 3rd and you're looking at a total of 10 + months. Their constitutional obligation is to be ready within 90 days. They should've been ready, no excuses.

Everyone knows that ECP works against the PTI evident with all the cases going on, so anything they say are just excuses. They could've easily advised the government in power that hey, we are in a pandemic let's just stick with the manual census results. They started the delimitation exercise on their own now so why huff and puff and become an obstacle against the government when they could've done that from the very beginning. Oh could it be that the Shariffs are in power now so let's get the ball rolling?

How many people are those? What % of the voting population do they make? If I were to venture a guess I see a few lakh. Let's take an estimate on the higher side by saying 90-100 lakh. That's 5% of the total population.
