LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), which is struggling to muster enough numbers in the Punjab Assembly to form a government in the province, is also faced with another dilemma: selection of a suitable candidate for the chief executive of the province. Out of Punjab’s 297 seats, the PTI has so far won 122 seats, according to unofficial results.

PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi could have been considered a potential candidate for the chief minister’s slot, but he lost from PP-217 Multan-VII.

As the seat is wide open with no clear candidate yet, various quarters have initiated campaigns to pitch certain candidates for the coveted slot.

According to a campaign running on an online political forum, Dr Yasmin Rashid should be considered as a potential candidate for Punjab chief minister, as she proved herself a strong worker in her three elections in the ancestral constituency of the Sharif family. Dr Rashid also served as PTI Punjab’s general secretary.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER AD

Though she lost from the Sharif stronghold (now NA-125) following a neck-and-neck fight, but Dr Rashid tops the party’s list for women’s reserved seats.

Advocating that a candidate entering the Punjab Assembly on a reserved seat could become a chief minister, the online campaign is seeking public opinion on who should become the CM from amongst Dr Rashid, PTI central Information Secretary Fawad Chaudhry -- who pitched his name himself, and PTI Punjab President Abdul Aleem Khan.

Voting in the online polls suggests, so far, that 65 per cent respondents wanted Dr Rashid as the chief minister, while 23 per cent favoured Mr Chaudhry and 12 per cent Mr Khan. As many as 9,312 voters had participated in the poll till 10pm.

While a large number of party workers are promoting Aleem Khan as a potential candidate for the chief minister’s position, others believe Mr Khan is facing inquiries in the accountability bureau over his offshore companies and a land scam. They even claim that Mr Khan was demoralised after losing from PP-162 as well as NA-129 even though he may have won from PP-158.

Fawad Chaudhry has pitched himself as a candidate for the slot, saying in a talk show on television: “It will be a lie to say that I’m not a candidate for chief ministership.”

Former opposition leader in Punjab Assembly, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, who had earlier on Thursday dispelled any impression of being a candidate for the CM’s slot during a formal media talk, has now floated his name.

In reference to reports that former chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi could be a potential candidate for the top slot in Punjab, Mr Chaudhry asserted that only a PTI member would be selected as the chief minister.

In order to gather enough numbers to form a government in Punjab, Mr Chaudhry said the PTI had contacted 21 independents, while eight more would be contacted on Saturday (today). He also claimed that the eight independents would be meeting party Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday to formally join the PTI.

According to Arif hameed bhatti, it is going to be a toss up between shah mehmood wureshi & chaudhry sarwar.

Strangely enough Punjab CM position is as important as PM when it comes to discussion!

22 independents, PML-Q votes take PTI tally to 153 in Punjab

LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has entered the `final phase’ of forming its government in Punjab with assertions that the party has already got the support of required number of MPAs-elect. However, there is no discussion on the selection of a candidate for Punjab chief minister for now.

Besides eight elected members of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), including an independent, the PTI claims 22 independents have formally joined the party, taking its tally to 153 in the directly-elected house of 297 members.

The 22 independents, who have joined the party, are: Raja Sagheer Ahmad (PP-7), Syed Saeedul Hassan (PP-46), Muhammad Ajmal Cheema (PP-97), Ghulam Rasool Sangha (PP-83), Ameer M Khan (PP-89), Saeed Akbar Khan (PP-90), Khawar Shah (PP-203), Muhammad Umer Farooq (PP-106), Faisal Hayat (PP-125), Hussain Jahanian Gardezi (PP-204), Sheikh Salman Naeem (PP-2017), Fida Hussain (PP-237), Shaukat Lalika (PP-238), Sardar Abdul Haye Dasti (PP-270), Basit Bukhari (PP-272), Khurram Leghari (PP-275), Tahir Mehmood Randhawa (PP-282), Syed Rafaqat Ali Gillani (PP-284), Muhammad Hanif Pitafi (PP-289), Taimoor Laali (PP-93), Rai Taimoor Bhatti (PP-124) and Mehr Aslam Bharwana (PP-127).

Sources say the PTI will bag 34 women seats and five minority seats against its 153 members and show up with 192 members in the complete house of 371 members.

Sources say party chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday remained busy in discussions about party policies for the first 30 days, 90 days and 100 days. “However, there was no discussion on the chief minister candidate as the party is weighing all options,” says a party leader.

Owing to indecision, the candidates for the coveted chief minister slot are increasing and lobbying with their credentials besides discrediting others on different grounds.

Candidates in the run are: Abdul Aleem Khan, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Fawad Chaudhry, Mian Aslam Iqbal, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed and new entrant Yassir Humayun (PP-21).

I still maintain that Dr Yasmin Rashid is the best choice. She is very deserving, she has shown she is a strong and capable woman, and picking a "nazryati worker" also sets the right precedent.

-Aleem Khan should not be considered due to the NAB case against him.

-Fawad Chaudhry is not up to the task in my opinion, and he is best suited in an information position. Plus, I don't want to see people resigning from the National Assembly.

-Mian Mahmood ur Rasheed should not be considered because he didn't really do anything special as leader of opposition. He also did some questionable things during the selection of interim CM Punjab.

-I am not really even sure who Yassir Humayun is, I think he is too new to be considered.

-Mian Aslam is another option, and I would not mind him. But I have heard that he is too soft, and I personally think that Dr Yasmin is more deserving anyway.

Dr. Yasmin Rashid will also be a step in the right direction in terms of women empowerment and may even shut up the liberal feminazis that seem to have a thing for IK.

Yasmin Rashid as CM Punjab + Nasira Iqbal as President (Allama Iqbal's daughter in law) would be great.

There are also rumours that Dr Yasmeen will be made CM for 3 months whilst SMQ wins bye elections.

The popular consensus here is that Dr. Yasmin is a deserving candidate.

Anyone care to give a little bio of her? And why she is deserving of the post.

Yup, I keep on hearing that as well but i am yet to see anyone tell us on why she actually deserves the post. Saying putting Yasmeen in the position of PM is empowering women is straight up Hillary Clinton level **. You can afford this sort of stuff for a non critical position like President but not for the second most important position in the country that is CM Punjab.

She can not control Punjab. I would like Aleem Khan or someone from South Punjab since Fawad is out the race now.

It is not just about empowering women, she genuinely deserves to be given the position. She is an old, genuine PTI worker, a very hard and strong worker too. She ran the best campaign in the country on one of the most difficult seats.

Just observing from outside, She is not powerful enough in party to control Punjab. She is not involved in any negotiations with other parties....

This role requires a senior party leader.

Maybe she can serve well in health, where her expertise is.

Just a small summary of who she is:

You sort of proved my point. Her expertise is in health and that's what she should focus on.

Didn't she lose her NA assembly seat?

The fact that she isn't seen any negotiations, tells you she is not CM material. This is not a dig at her.

What has happened to Ijaz Chaudry? did he contest elections? I think he would be a good choice for cm Punjab.

You do have a point that she may be suited better in health. I just think that we need to set the right precedent, and give key positions to ideological members right than electables and oppurtunists. Giving CM'ship to people like Aleem Khan isn't going to bring change. I personally feel like Yasmin Rashid is up for the task.

At this stage we need a bruiser to deal with the Noora mafia in Punjab. This mafia includes the Punjab Police and the Punjab bureaucracy.

No it's likely to be SMQ.

Does SMQ have enough respect for IK to actually get off his backside and actually do work, be PTI's Shehbaz Sharif? Do you think having proper responsibility will make him forget about Asad Umar/JKT and realise he's gotta perform if we're to see him as the next leader (humour me) ?

Asim,

I agree with everything you said.

NO SMQ does not have the skill to get off his backside to get things done.

Despite Shabaz Sharif's flaws, he was a bloody hard worker. Nobody can deny that. He would go city to city around the clock in Punjab.

JKT is a bloody hard worker and will be 70 years old in a few years and SMQ is younger by a few years.

SMQ is known to always put his clan first. He was in tears when people questioned him when giving a ticket to his son.

SMQ as CM of Punjab is a bad move.

I'll agree that I don't want to see SMQ as CM Punjab

I don't know why I have this feeling IK is going to chose a dark horse type candidate. Someone none of us expected and will do a great job Insha'Allah.

PTI dont have any suitable candidate for Punjab CM.

Yes, they do.

Dr. Yasim Rashid and Aleem Khan are a few I can name.

Maybe we should add a poll to the thread MenInG

Just added a poll. Didn't add SMQ as he isn't eligible at the moment.

Let me know if I missed anyone.

Thanks bro

I assume we are considering PTI only.

I guess for the N league supporters of the forum, maybe add SS and HS as well? (oonko bei hope dena hei ;-) )

Heart says it should be Dr. Yasmin Rashid but in reality, after watching that press conference, it feels that Aleem Khan will get it, thus voted for him.

every one of them have considerable negative points; ideally in the previous elections Imran Khan should have selected a youngish hardnosed motivated with no baggage man as opposition leader in Punjab assembly who would have gained all this experience in last 5 years and now he would be ready to become the chief minister Punjab; but Imran Khan selected someone who does not have the personality or work ethics and so now Imran Khan is having this problem

Why don't they decide this the American way? Hold an election within the party's Punjab chapter of all the hopefuls and then the person to win the most votes gets the nomination.

Best election campaign where she lost?

She seems to be more apt for Health Minister role.

As a resident of Punjab, i would hate to see people like Aleem, Fawad, or Yasmin leading our set up. Aleem and Fawad are corrupt whereas Yasmin seems like the v2.0 of Khattak.

I hope Shah Mehmood Qureshi becomes the CM.

Absolutely, someone needs to clamp down on the badmash police across provinces.

With that being said, i dont think that even SMQ is a viable candidate. PTI's punjab leadership is poor as compared to the likes of Shahbaz Sharif who is the king in terms of hardwork as a CM.

Running around a lot to make up for the failing to setup good institutions is hardly a model to follow.

Punjab chief minister slot: PTI says name kept under the wraps on ally’s request

LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) claims that it has finalised its candidate for the slot of the Punjab chief minister but is withholding his name on the request of its ally PML-Q.

“Party chairman Imran Khan had selected the nominee for the office of chief minister many days ago but his name is being kept secret on the insistence of the PML-Q which wants to delay making public the nomination until elections of the Punjab Assembly’s speaker and deputy speaker,” a senior PTI leader told Dawn after the oath-taking of MPAs-elect here on Wednesday.

“PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, who is also the two parties’ joint nominee for the slot of speaker, impressed upon Imran Khan that the chief minister-designate should be announced after the polling for speaker and deputy speaker to curtail chances of losing the two offices which have gained significance in the wake of a numerically strong opposition in the house,” he said.

Polls for both the positions are scheduled to be held on Thursday (today).

The PTI leader, who is also a candidate for the coveted office of the provincial chief executive, said the Q League feared that internal rifts on the nomination could damage the coalition interests in the polls for the slots of speaker and deputy speaker.

A close aide to Mr Elahi confirmed the report and said clinching of the speaker’s office is important for successfully containing the opposition which almost equals in parliamentary numerical strength in the house. He claimed that once elected as speaker, Mr Elahi would be able to persuade many opposition MPAs to vote for the PTI-Q joint candidate for the chief minister.

If elected it will be the second term of Mr Elahi as speaker. He had earlier served on the post during 1997-99. He is also a former chief minister (2002-07) and has returned to the house after 11 years.

Seems like Raja Yasir is getting it.

But he is from Chakwal which isnt South Punjab.

Hmmmm true I missed that part. In any case if South Punjab sooba comes into fruition I would want Khusro Bakhtiar to be the CM. He is young and highly educated and appeared to be clean.

If I remember correctly Khusro Bakhtiar younger brother won a MPA seat, maybe he will be selected as the CM Punjab nominee?

Just read up on Khusro Bakhtiar.... he is lawyer from Lincoln's Inn in London (same uni Quaid went to).... damn that is impressive. I hope he gets some important role in PTI government.

I would not be suprised tbh. I think this may be the case or someone from Bakhtiar group. Yet again SMQ may not be too happy if this happens as these were JKT recruits. Pakistani politics is like an Indian drama :)

Yes impressive qualification but both of the brothers won as independents and joined PML-N in 2013, so let's see how much IK & PTI will trust them.

Chakwal is by no means a developed city like Lahore or Faisalabad.

What a letdown !!!. Imran Khan selected Punjab's next Chief Minister who is a Sardar (feudal) and a lota who has changed parties multiple times and contest the last 2013 election on PML-N ticket  times millions.

I don't think he is really that poor because his father was MP too but i guess what IK meant was that they don't have electricity where he lives (his hometown)

More than his ameeri and ghareebi I want to know what his educational background is and what is his experience.

Asking questions of your party already, that's more than Nawaz and PPP supporters have done in forever :14:

IK told us to stand for what is right! We have taken PTI to cleaners many times over their decisions.

Who is this guy and what are his credentials ? Confused

IMO, with this decision, the south punjab province demand is going to be fulfill now.
how? Imran Khan promised before election to create south punjab province.

Is he corrupt?
Dont know if he is financially corrupt; hope not; him being a lota should be considered as morally corrupt?

Bhai jan not every Sardar is a rich feudal it's a title many in Punjab use specially the Khatars.
I hope you are right; hate to see that PTI was not able to find a chief minister who is at least with PTI for 5 years

Left field appointment... I hope his credentials are good.

Has anyone noticed how many people from backward regions are being promoted. I hope they can withstand the heat when the going gets tough.

In Musharraf era, he was district Nazim of Taunsa.

He was a member of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) from 2002-2008 and later switched to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

In 2013, he contested the election from PML-N ticket but lost to Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) candidate.

I got the above information from another site. If true then I am very disappointed in this selection.
