Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (2019/20) | Round 4 | Oct 5-8, 2019 | Matches Thread

Karachi, 6 October 2019:

Ashfaq Ahmed’s 173 was the highlight of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s 484 for five declared total (overnight 305 for two) on the second day of the four day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy round four, first-class match against Central Punjab at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

The hosts were in the driving seat when play was called-off early due to bad light as Central Punjab lost opener Salman Butt (zero) and Mohammad Saad (19) to end the day at 45 for two.

On Sunday, the prolific Ashfaq resumed his innings on 98 and soon after completed his third century of the ongoing tournament. The 32-year-old right-hander reached the 100-run mark off 217 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 173 compiled off 323 balls with the help of 22 fours and two sixes.

Ashfaq’s third wicket alliance with captain Mohammad Rizwan yielded 250 runs, Rizwan fell for 128 off 229 balls, his innings was studded with 16 fours.

Lunch was taken at the completion of 110 overs, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa having reached 394 for four, accumulated four batting points, Central Punjab on the other hand got one bowling point.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa declared their first innings 10 minutes before the scheduled tea interval at 484 for five. Adil Amin was batting on 58 and Zohaib Khan on 10 when the declaration came.

Naseem Shah with two wickets for 85 runs was the most successful Central Punjab bowler, Zafar Gohar, Ehsan Adil and Waqas Maqsood took a wicket apiece.

In reply, Central Punjab lost Salman to Junaid Khan while Saad fell to Sameen Gul, minutes before the premature close of play.

Captain Azhar Ali was batting on 22, his team would be relying on him to bail them out of trouble on day three.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 484 for 5 declared, 133 overs (Ashfaq Ahmed 173, Mohammad Rizwan 128, Adil Amin 58 not out, Israrullah 43; Naseem Shah 2-85, Zafar Gohar 1-85)

Central Punjab 45 for 2, 14.1 overs ( Azhar Ali 22 not out, Mohammad Saad 19; Sameen Gul 1-7, Junaid Khan 1-17)

One thing for sure Naseem Shah is one of the best here, should play last T20 for Pakistan against Srilanka...

Its heartening to see trundlers getting exposed and true pacers doing well , Pretty sure we will have a great next season after the filtering process.

Terrific performances by Aamer Yamin and Sameen Gul.

But the Chief Selector is coaching in another country. Has he even noticed?

Though I am thoroughly disappointed by young batters , its the oldies which are getting most runs , Saad Ali , Saud Shakil , Khushdil Shah ,Imran Rafiq are not doing that well.

2 medium pacers( i am being polite to Yamim), neither is international quality and never will be.

Yamin is a batting allrounder. His Bowling is a bonus, if he can score runs and pick up the odd wicket then that will be excellent for Pakistan.

Sameen Gul can bowl in the mid 140s and has a very good in swinger, is accurate and nips it around. He has outstanding FC stats and that is reflected by his performances this season.

Yamim has potential to be a decent bat, his bowling is that of 6th seamer in county cricket and just gets in the way of his batting. Gul is an 82mph bowler, decent at FC level but not international quality unless he has improved dramatically since i saw him last season.

Sameen Gul was touching 145kph in PSL. Bowled mostly in high 130s.

He is only 20 so he has improved and can improve. In PSL his pace was high 130s-low 140s and took it into the mid 140s.

Nauman’s five-wicket haul puts Northern on top

Rawalpindi, 7 October 2019:

Left-arm spinner Nauman Ali took a five-wicket haul as Northern bowled out Balochistan for 301 on the third day of their first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fourth round match at the KRL Stadium, Rawalpindi on Monday.

At the draw of stumps on Monday, Northern, who scored 450 all out in the first innings, were 75 without loss in 18 overs. They now have an overall lead of 224 runs.

Zeeshan Malik made up for his failure in the first inning with an aggressive unbeaten 54, which was laced with eight fours and a six in 59 balls. First-innings centurion Haider Ali was 20 not out.

At the bottom of the points table after three rounds, Northern will be looking to play at a brisk pace, set Balochistan a target and then put Imran Farhat's team under pressure on the last day.

Balochistan resumed the day at the overnight score of 119 for two, relatively well placed. But they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were not successful in stitching a big partnership to challenge Northern's first innings total.

Asif Zakir played a fine innings of 61 that included nine fours and came off 129 deliveries. He shared an 82-run fifth wicket partnership with Bismillah Khan (30).

Imran Butt could add only one run to his overnight score of 58 while Amad Butt contributed 23.

Nauman, who dismissed Abubakar Khan (50) before bad light brought a premature end to Sunday’s play, bowled a tight line and length and troubled almost all batsmen.

The left-arm spinner was rewarded for his hard work and finished with impressive figures of 5-52. Haris Rauf also bowled well to take three wickets for 73 runs.

Balochistan earned 3 batting points while Northern also secured 3 bowling points.

Scores in brief:

Northern 450 all out, 105.4 overs (Faizan Riaz 141, Haider Ali 133, Ali Sarfraz 50, Umar Amin 34; Amad Butt 3-57, Mohammad Asghar 2-62, Taj Wali 2-108, Yasir Shah 2-119) and 75 without loss in 18 overs (Zeeshan Malik 54 not out, Haider Ali 20 not out).

Balochistan 301 all out, 101.5 overs (Asif Zakir 61, Imran Butt 59, Abubakar Khan 50, Bismillah Khan 30, Amad Butt 23; Nauman Ali 5-52, Haris Rauf 3-73).

Rahat and Aamer Yamin rock Sindh as Southern Punjab eye victory

Karachi, 7 October 2019:

Discarded Pakistan pacer Rahat Ali and all-rounder Aamer Yamin had Sindh on the ropes on day three as Southern Punjab after enforcing the follow-on took control of the four day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match at the UBL Complex on Monday.

At close, Sindh were struggling on 58 for three in their second innings after a shaky start as they lost Khurram Manzoor, Abid Ali and skipper, Asad Shafiq within 15 runs.

Rahat and Yamin shared eight wickets on a day dominated by Southern Punjab bowlers.

When stumps were drawn for the day with four overs remaining, Sindh were still 204 runs behind Southern Punjab. Omair bin Yousuf (33) and Fawad Alam (12) batted through, the two have so far added 43 runs for the fourth wicket.

Sindh resuming on 90 for one this morning were bowled out for 284 runs with Rahat finishing with four for 66 and Aamer with two for 26 runs.

Southern Punjab had notched up 546 runs on the first two days with centuries from Shan Masood, Aamer Yamin and Muhammad Irfan after being invited to bat first.

No Sindh batsmen could settle down for a big score once Rahat had the in-form Abid Ali caught behind by Adnan Akmal for 46 early, on the third morning.

Omair bin Yousuf (16), Asad Shafiq (57 from 121 balls with eight fours) and Saad Ali (55 from 110 balls with ten fours) were the main scorers as senior batsman, Fawad Alam fell for just 11, bowled by leg-spinner, Zahid Mahmood.

Shafiq and Saad had a productive fifth wicket stand of 66 runs before Rahat broke it by trapping the latter leg before.

Sindh were bowled out just after tea and asked to bat again by Punjab skipper, Shan Masood who again entrusted Rahat and Aamer with the new ball.

Rahat continued to bowl with fire sending back Khurram Manzoor for a duck caught at square leg while Aamer extracted pace to trap Abid (five) as he played across to square leg.

Aamer also had Asad Shafiq (two) caught at short mid-wicket to a lazy looking shot. Southern Punjab took three bowling points, Sindh on the other hand had to content with two batting points.

Scores in brief:

Southern Punjab 546 all out, 140.2 overs (Aamer Yamin 142, Shan Masood 118, Mohammad Irfan junior 101, Sohaib Maqsood 57; Fawad Alam 2-63, Tabish Khan 2-101, Sohail Khan 2-102)

Sindh 284 all out 99.1 overs (Asad Shafiq 57, Saad Ali 55 Abid Ali 46; Rahat Ali 4-66, Aamer Yamin

Baffling to see the follow on not being enforced by KPK

very odd

Kamran Akmal’s 136 leads Central Punjab’s fight back

Karachi, 7 October 2019:

Wicketkeeper batsman Kamran Akmal scored a fighting century to lead Central Punjab’s fight back against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the third day of the four day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy round four, first-class match at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Kamran added 109 runs for the eight wicket with fast-bowler Waqas Maqsood (19) to rescue his side from a shaky 143 for seven to their eventual 278-run total. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa however, did not enforce the follow-on and opted to bat again, despite a 206-run first innings lead.

By close of play, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had reached 30 for the loss of one wicket in their second innings.

On Monday, play was suspended for 28 minutes during the morning session due to bad light. Before the disruption, Imran Khan senior made two crucial breakthroughs, sending back Central Punjab captain Azhar Ali (24) and Saad Nasim (10) to provide Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the ideal start to the day.

After resumption, Central Punjab also lost Usman Salahuddin (20), the visitors took lunch at a precarious 107 for five.

Post lunch, Central Punjab kept losing wickets with Zafar Gohar (five) and Bilal Asif (16) returning to the pavilion. Kamran took control of the proceedings at this stage as Central Punjab stayed in the hunt with their wicketkeeper’s rear guard action.

Kamran was eventually dismissed for 136, his innings was compiled off 215 balls and included 19 fours and one six.

Right-arm pace bowler Sameen Gul was the pick of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bowlers, Sameen took four wickets for 57 runs, he was ably supported by Imran who took two for 72, Junaid Khan, Umer Khan and Zohaib Khan took a wicket apiece.

On Sunday, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had declared their first innings on 484 for five.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 484 for 5 declared, 133 overs (Ashfaq Ahmed 173, Mohammad Rizwan 128, Adil Amin 58 not out, Israrullah 43; Naseem Shah 2-85, Zafar Gohar 1-85) and 30 for 1 in 9.2 overs (Sahibzada Farhan 17; Naseem Shah 1-5)

Central Punjab 278 all out 78.1 overs ( Kamran Akmal 136, Azhar Ali 24; Sameen Gul 4-57, Imran Khan senior 2-72)

Yamim has potential to be a decent bat, his bowling is that of 6th seamer in county cricket and just gets in the way of his batting. Gul is an 82mph bowler, decent at FC level but not international quality unless he has improved dramatically since i saw him last season.

All he needs to do is bowl 10-12 economical overs in a day, he doesn't need to take wickets.

Good to see Sameen and Naseem performing they both are solid test prospects with Naseem being fit to represent in all forms of the game.

When I saw him bowl he looked a solid 82mph Bowler, which when not backed by exceptional skill is cannon fodder. I hope you are right and I am wrong.

In the previous seasons he was not that quick but this season he was in the high 130s to low 140s.

The pitch is looking ectremely dry. The grass is just there to hold the pitch together it doesn't really have an effect, the pitch is still dead.

Aamer Yamin, Rizwan, Naseem Shah, Ehsan Adil and Sameen Gul cannot be ignored by Misbah for the Australia tests, if they are then it will be worse than picking Umar Akmal and Shehzad vs Sri Lanka.

Ashfaq is piling up lot of runs. I doubt It's too late for him as 31 years old.
Naseem and Ehsan have been consistent.
Sameen , Naseem & Ehsan have strong case couple of them should accompany Shaheen, Abbas and Hasan to Australia for tests.

Ideally this should be our bowling squad
Shaheen
Sameen
Nasim
Abbas
Either of Ehsan or Hasan
Yasir
Zafar Gohar
And
Yamin

Hasan and Abbas shouldn't go to Aussie imo. Hasan has been horrible for the past year and will get smashed in Aussie just like he did in SA.

Abbas has done horrible this QeA season and was bad in South Africa as well. Aussie pitches don't suit Abbas.
The pacers in Australia should be: Shaheen, Sameen, Naseem, Ehsan. These are the top performers in this seasons by a long way. Aamer Yamin should go too as a batting allrounder that can also bowls some useful overs.

Shocker by the umpire. Huge edge and umpire doesn't move. Have to feel sorry for Musa, he's been so unlucky with catches dropped and decisions not given

I have a bad feeling that Nauman Ali is going to get picked. We saw it with Zulfiqar Babar under Misbah's captaincy. Nauman Ali even looks like Zulfiqar Babar. Are they half brothers or cousins?

Haris Rauf gets Imran Butt and Amad Butt with a couple of short balls, 5 wickets in the match so far... Northern pushing for a win here. Balochistan 6 down.

Is there any middle order batsmen that are scoring lots of runs? We need some Azhar/Shafiq replacements asap.

Aamer Yamin and Mohammad Rizwan. Ashfaq Ahmed is scoring too but his FC stats are quite poor, it will take a lot more performances from him to start convincing people.

Aamer Yamin scored 142 and took 5 wkts. 3 of the wkts are Abid, Shafiq and Fawad.

KPK brought KushDil Shah from second XI but didn't give chance to Kamran Ghulam who has potential to be genuine All-rounder.
This also shows depth in squads with reduced teams.

Lahore, 8 October 2019: Sindh’s Sohail Khan has been fined 50% of his match fee for a level 2 offence relating to personal abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during a match in his team’s round four four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Southern Punjab at UBL Sports Complex, Karachi.

The incident happened on Monday when the 35-year-old used abusive language after getting dismissed.

In another incident, Sindh’s opener Abid Ali was warned for a level 1 offence relation to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during a match. He had protested at being given lbw in the second innings.

Sohail and Abid were charged by on-field umpires Khalid Mahmood and Tahir Rasheed for violation of clause 2.8 and 2.13, respectively, of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player support Personnel after the end of the third day of the match, which Sindh lost by an innings and 129 runs.

Both pleaded guilty and accepted the sanctions imposed by match referee Iftikhar Ahmed.

All-rounders, Bilawal Bhatti and Aamer Yamin shared seven second innings wickets to lead Southern Punjab to an emphatic innings and 129 runs win over Sindh on day four of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy round four match at the UBL Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Sindh resuming on 58 for three and needing another 204 runs to avoid an innings defeat were bowled out for a paltry 133 runs in 43 overs just at the stroke of lunch as Bilawal four for 23 and Aamer three for 31 bowled with fire on a pitch on which on the first two days, three centuries were scored.

The overnight pair of Umair Bin Yousuf who resumed on 33 and the seasoned Fawad Alam who was on 12 runs didn’t last long this morning as the former was dismissed by leg-spinner, Zahid Mahmood for 37 from 76 balls.

Fawad’s wicket was taken by Aamer who trapped him leg before after he had progressed to 26 from 64 balls.

This triggered a procession of the Sindh batsmen to the pavilion as only left-hander, Saad Ali offered resistance remaining unbeaten on 30 from 67 balls hitting four boundaries.

Bilawal who has donned Pakistan colours than came into his own first castling keeper, Muhammad Hussain for 17 before trapping three batsmen leg-before in a row. Sohail Khan (zero), Tabish Khan (four) and Waleed Ahmed (zero) falling to Bilawal during his incisive spell as last man Mir Hamza didn’t come out to bat due to a health issue.

Bilawal finished with excellent match figures of five for 67 and Aamer ended-up with a haul of five for 57 in the match.

Aamer also scored 142 from 189 balls in Southern Punjab’s massive first innings total of 546 runs to cap an outstanding all-round game. Captain, Shan Masood and left-arm spinner, Muhammad Irfan also got hundreds in the first innings with the latter scoring his maiden first class ton.

Why didn't KPK enforce the follow on after having a massive lead ?

Northern captain Umar Amin has been fined Rs 16,000 for a minimum over rate offence during his team’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy round four first-class match against Balochistan at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

Northern were found to be two overs short of the required over-rate in Balochistan’s second innings on the fourth and final day of the match.
