Eighth round of first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy begins on Monday

Karachi, 13 December 2020:

Following three exciting results in the previous round, the eighth round of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which commences on Monday, promises to sustain the momentum as teams fight for the top two slots which will enable their qualification for the five-day new year’s final.

As anticipated, the points table further spiced up following Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s rise to the top after a stellar innings and 37 runs victory against Sindh, which helped them grab as many as 25 points, the most for any team in the seventh round.

Central Punjab’s resurgence has put the title defenders on the fourth spot from the bottom of the points table after two back-to-back wins.

Southern Punjab, who slipped to third spot following their defeat to Northern in the sixth round after spending four rounds at the top of the table, are just one point behind second-ranked Northern following their thumping win over Balochistan, who slipped one place to fifth position.

Sindh continue to have a poor run of form following their win in the season opener. In their six matches since, they have lost three; two of those defeats have come in their last two matches, and drawn three.

With only two rounds remaining after this one, Sindh, captained by Asad Shafiq, will be eager to accumulate maximum points and finish on a high.

Balochistan v Central Punjab at State Bank Stadium:

Central Punjab have staged an impressive comeback with two big wins against Sindh (by 227 runs in the sixth round) and Northern (by six wickets in the seventh round) and will be eager to further stretch this winning streak when they take on Balochistan, who also have lost three of their last six matches following their solitary win in their first match of the 2020-21 first-class season.

Captain Hasan Ali regaining fitness and form and spearheading the bowling attack since his return to the side has played a vital role in Central Punjab’s change of fortune. The pacer has taken 15 wickets in the last three matches and now sits at the eighth spot in the list of the highest wicket-takers with 20 scalps at an average of 21.05.

Contributions from Waqas Maqsood, who is the leading wicket-takers amongst the pacers to date with 28 wickets at 21.43, and 23-year-old left-arm orthodox Ahmed Safi Abdullah (28 wickets at 21.61) further strengthens the team’s bowling unit. Waqas is ranked third and Ahmed is ranked fifth in the list of bowlers with most wickets.

Hasan, however, would be hoping that their batsmen join the party towards the business end of the tournament. Despite restricting Northern to 243 in their last outing, Central Punjab fell nine runs behind their opponents in the first innings, which underscore their batting woes, and lost four wickets in their chase of 166.

Balochistan had a forgettable outing in the previous round as they slipped from 154 for two to 199 all out in their second innings, courtesy a scorching seven for 35 by pacer Zia-ul-Haq, to lose to Southern Punjab by a heavy 205-run margin.

Their captain Bismillah Khan would be hoping for a better batting display. The team’s leading run-scorer Akbar-ur-Rehman, the 37-year-old right-handed batsman, has made 445 runs at 44.50 and is the eighth top run-getter in the season. However, the gulf between their best and the second best batsman, Ali Waqas (360 runs at 40), is so vast that he is 20th in the same list, which Balochistan will be eager to fill as the tournament progresses.

Their bowlers have put some of the most impressive individual performances. Taj Wali leads them with 23 wickets in seven outings and their next best bowlers are Kashif Bhatti (19 wickets at 44.68), Jalat Khan (18 wickets at 26.61) and Khurram Shahzad (18 wickets at 27.89). They are ranked sixth, ninth, 10th and 11th on the list of bowlers with most wickets.

Sindh v Northern at National Stadium (broadcast fixture):

The National Stadium will host the teams, who are arguably the most eager to secure a win at this crucial juncture. Both teams enter the round at the back of defeats which have seen Northern getting displaced from the top of the table and Sindh slip to the bottom from the fourth position.

In their last face-off, Northern defeated Sindh by 128 runs.

Northern captain Nauman Ali has been in red-hot form and is the only bowler in the tournament to date to have breached the 50-wicket mark. The 24-year-old left-arm orthodox has 54 scalps at 20.67 and is the only bowler with five five-wicket hauls. He will continue to spearhead his team’s bowling attack, especially after impressive match figures of 11 for 153 in the previous match.

Their batting line-up has been held together by Hammad Azam (641 runs at 64.10), Umar Amin (558 runs at 50.73) and Mohammad Nawaz (531 runs at 59) who are fourth, fifth and sixth top run-getters in the season.

Sindh’s Sharjeel Khan has scored three half-centuries in last four innings and his captain Asad will be hoping that his bat continues to produce runs in front of the broadcast cameras, which will telecast action in Pakistan through PTV Sports and beam it across the globe through PCB’s YouTube channel.

Twenty-five-year-old Saud Shakeel scored a fifty in his last innings which augurs well for Sindh as the left-hander has been anchoring their batting department over the course of the tournament. With 657 runs at 50.54, he is the third best batsman.

Tabish Khan, the 36-year-old right-arm pacer, remains Sindh’s most successful bowler with 22 scalps at 30.82 runs per dismissal.

Southern Punjab v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at UBL Sports Complex:

This promises to be another exciting encounter with both teams vying for the top spot as Southern Punjab are 14 points behind the table-topper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (117 points).

The match will bring two of the best three spinners in the competition face-to-face. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Sajid Khan is the second best bowler with 46 wickets at 22.57 and Southern Punjab’s Zahid Mahmood has the third most wickets (39 wickets at 22.69).
Kamran Ghulam and Salman Ali Agha to leading batsmen of the season will also be pitted against each other.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kamran Ghulam’s both centuries have come in his last two matches and is currently the leading run-getter with 713 runs at an average of 54.85. The 25-year-old right-handed batsman has also scored three half-centuries.

Southern Punjab’s Salman Ali Agha has crunched one century and five half-centuries which has helped him amass 665 runs at 66.50. The 27-year-old right-handed batsman is the second highest run-getter in the season.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s all four wins have come in the last five matches, while Southern Punjab have won one, lost two and drawn two in their last five outings.

When these teams came face to face earlier this season, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa won by 75 runs.

First century for Ali Zaryab in the tournament, some very mesmerizing stroke-play to watch.

Kamran Ghulam doing the business again hopefully can convert this to another three figures score.

Saud needs to score this game, otherwise Kamran Ghulam is far and ahead the best U25 batsman in the tournament right now.

To be honest after watching Ghulam I have a hunch that he might be the second best long format batsman in Pakistan after Babar.

To be honest there is space for both Saud and Ghulam in the Pakistan test side.

Ehsan Adil should also be getting games for his side.

Hs is good. Needs to hit tons more often now and get big ones. That's the area where if he can get better, he will have a very good career, especially as he is an opener. Once in don't give it away. His second XI big scores last year were also like this, 100 and out.

Nonetheless it's good to see him and Omair scoring runs. They should get all the games next season as well. From there it's only a matter of having one great season and you are in contention for the national team.

Mad props to Tariq Syed, what an elite commentator. The commentary session happening between Sindh and Northern currently is one of the best sessions that I have ever heard.

A bit of melancholy, a bit of cricket, a bit of personal touch, and very soothing voice to hear. He must be made a permanent feature of PSL as well.

Sikandar Bakht too! Both of them are the best Pakistani commentators around by a country mile.

Another daddy hundred by Kamran Ghulam.

3rd match in a row where he's hit a hundred in the 1st innings. In the last 2 matches' 1st innings, he made 153 and 166.

He has the most runs of any run scorer in the tournament, as well as the most runs to come in wins.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kamran Ghulam and Central Punjab’s Ali Zaryab scored centuries on the opening day of the eighth round of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy on Monday.

Kamran’s excellent run of form continued as the 25-year-old right-handed batsman recorded his third century in as many matches with a brilliant 145 not out against Southern Punjab at the UBL Sports Complex. He is now the only batsman to cross the 800-run mark and has the most number of centuries in the ongoing season.

Kamran had arrived at the crease when Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were two wickets down for 37 runs after their captain Khalid Usman had elected to bat after winning the toss. He stitched a 48-run stand for the third wicket with opener Israrulllah, who missed out on what would have been his career’s 29th half-century by a run, before a solid 211-run undefeated stand with Adil Amin (76 not out off 172 balls, six fours and two sixes) lifted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to 296 for three by the close of play.

To date, Kamran has smashed 19 fours and a six from the 249 balls he has faced.

The three wickets were shared between Aamir Yamin, Salman Ali Agha and Zahid Mahmood.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the table-toppers, gained two batting points from the first day’s play, while third-ranked Southern Punjab managed only one bowling point.

Ali Zaryab became the first Central Punjab batsman in the 2020-21 season to score a first-class century as the opener smashed 117 to help his side post 297 for six against Balochistan at the State Bank Stadium.

Following his captain Hasan Ali’s decision to bat, the 21-year-old put a solid 165-run alliance for the second wicket with Usman Salahuddin, who scored his fifth half-century in the season with a 162-ball 73 (10 fours) after Muhammad Akhlaq (19), his opening partner, was sent back to the pavilion by Gohar Faiz with 36 runs on board.

Ali crunched 18 fours and a six in his 178-ball stay at the crease.

The other notable batting performance came from Mohammad Saad who made 45 before he was trapped in front by spinner Jalat Khan, who took three wickets for 92 runs.

Off-spinner Raza-ul-Hasan accounted for Ali and Qasim Akram (seven) as he took two wickets for 62 runs.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Ali Shan (28 not out) and Bilawal Iqbal (one not out) will resume Central Punjab’s innings on Tuesday. To date, both teams have bagged two points each.

At the iconic National Stadium and in front of broadcast cameras, bottom-placed Sindh produced a stellar bowling performance to bowl out second-ranked Northern for 203 in 68.2 overs and pocket five bowling bonus points.

Pacers Azizullah, Shahnawaz Dhani and Mir Hamza equally shared nine wickets while the remaining batsman was dismissed by leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed.

That Northern were able to crawl beyond the 200-run mark was due to half-centuries by Mohammad Nawaz and wicketkeeper-batsman Jamal Anwar.

Nawaz posted his fifth half-century of the season with the innings top-score of 79, which included 10 fours, while Jamal made a 72-ball 51, a knock which was studded with six fours and two sixes.

In reply, Sindh, on the back of Sharjeel Khan’s unbeaten 32, had posted 40 for one. The left-handed opener will be joined by Azizullah (two not out) when play resumes on the second morning of the match.

Northern bagged only one point from their batting innings.

Scores in brief (day one of four):

At UBL Sports Complex, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elected to bat against Southern Punjab

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 296-3, 96 overs (Kamran Ghulam 145 not out, Adil Amin 76 not out, Israrullah 49)

At State Bank Stadium, Central Punjab elected to bat against Balochistan

Central Punjab 297-6, 90 overs (Ali Zaryab 117, Usman Salahuddin 73, Mohammad Saad 45, Ali Shan 28 not out; Jalat Khan 3-92, Raza-ul-Hasan 2-62)

Points to date: Central Punjab 2, Balochistan 2

At National Stadium, Northern elected to bat against Sindh

Northern 203 all out, 68.2 overs (Mohammad Nawaz 79, Jamal Anwar 51, Mubasir Khan 26; Azizullah 3-48, Shahnawaz Dhani 3-49, Mir Hamza 3-52)

Sindh 40-1, 11 overs (Sharjeel Khan 32 not out)

Points to date: Northern 1, Sindh 5

Sameen Gul benched again after a decent outing in the last game. Abdul Razzaq is an idiot with no eye for talent.

Ehsan Adil should also be getting games for his side.

If Abdul Razzaq was an idiot he wouldn't have given Kamran Ghulam a long rope in this season, mind you Kamran was playing 2nd XI games last year. Kamran's batting peak has also come under Razzaq's.

Razzaq has lost a lot of prime players to the Pakistan national yet his team is doing well.
Ashfaq Ahmed was asked to step down from his role as captain because of poor form, he brought in Md Wasim and is giving him an extended run. As far as Sameen Gul is concerned, he is a good bowler he will definitely make a mark and Razzaq needs to back him too.

Adding to the above post:-

Abdul Razzaq might be a motor mouth but he is doing a good job with the KPK team and long it may continue, as it will kee him busy and away from the microphone.

Yeah credit to Razzaq has made some good calls backing Kamran bringing in irfanullah and wasim definetley better then I expected.

It's the central Punjab coach who needs the sack has completely ruined confidence of decent bowlers like Adil and Bashir.

Sameen is good bowler. He should an automatic selection.Razzaq is a very poor coach.

Full flow Sharjeel is a dlight to watch. It is heartbreaking that we lost such a talent to spot fixing. It was as big of a loss as Amir and Asif. Don't understand why would you take that route when you can live a king life if you are a top cricketer in Pakistan

Mubasir khan looks a top offie....his control is awesome and great arm ball...I just want to see him flight it more and bowl slower which he has done occasionally. Looks great the way he goes around the umpire and bowls

Check out over 45.4, what a top class beauty to Saud Shakeel.

Heard a lot about Saad Khan. Talented batsman

Good to see him finally getting chances thought he was the best bat out of that u19 batch which included the likes of rohail, zaryab, amad alam etc.

3 more wickets for hasan Ali in 2nd innings, on his way to get a 10fer. Great to see him doing well after his Injury problems.

Hassan Ali can be the fourth seamer than Junaids so desperately wants of the Pakistan team in SENA, hopefully this rids the obsession with Faheem!

Yes - but his 50 not out is even more promising than his 8 wickets!

He should be on a plane to NZ so that he’s out of quarantine in time for the Second Test!

That’s what I meant! Far better than Faheem with the ball and far better with the bat too!

Also, interesting to see Mohammad Nawaz make another 50 as well as taking two wickets.

Outside Asia, my Pakistan Test team would now be:

1. Shan Masood
2. Abdullah Shafique
3. Saud Shakeel
4. Babar Azam
5. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
6. Mohammad Nawaz
7. Shadab Khan
8. Faheem Ashraf or Amad Butt
9. Hasan Ali
10. Shaheen Shah Afridi
11. Naseem Shah

Inside Asia I would simply add Sajid Khan in place of the Number 8.

Pakistan don’t need to be selecting batsmen like Abid Ali, Haris Sohail and Fawad Alam who have fewer than 1000 Test runs even though they are the wrong side of 30.

At least Abdullah Shafique, Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Nawaz are young enough to develop further.

This is my potential SENA test lineup if Hassan maintains this form:

1. Shan Masood
2. Abdullah Shafique
3. Haider Ali
4. Babar Azam (c)
5. Saud Shakeel
6. Mohammad Rizwan
7. Zafar Gohar
8. Hassan Ali
9. Mohammad Abbas
10. Shaheen Afridi
11. Naseem Shah

Why play both Nawaz and Shadab when Saud Shakeel provides a spin option? I would take one specialist spinner who can bat too, like Zafar Gohar who bowls better than Shadab and will probably bat similarly. Sajid Khan as well.

Saud to provide the second spin option, with four pacers like you mentioned. Specialist batsman in place of Nawaz. In my case, I’ve included Haider Ali.

This is my potential SENA test lineup if Hassan maintains this form:

1. Shan Masood
2. Abdullah Shafique
3. Haider Ali
4. Babar Azam (c)

I vastly prefer that team to the current one,

The problem is that we subtly disagree on balance.

I see Shaheen and Naseem as a Pair of Number Elevens, increasing the number of runs that numbers 7, 8 and 9 must score.

But Abbas is a Third Number Eleven, meaning that now 7 and 8 are going to need to score even more runs.

I’m fine with Zafar Gohar at 8 but not 7. Problem is, I don’t think he is a top class spinner like Sajid Khan.

Similarly, even in this game, Hasan Ali really slogged his runs - his 50 came off 33 balls. Until he can last 100 balls in every third First Class innings I can’t really bat him higher than 9.

I looked at your team and liked it. But there’s a world of difference between what score you can reach from 260-7 when the next man in is Hasan Ali at 9 or Mohammad Abbas at 9!

You have valid criticisms, it’s just I’m just completely averse to Faheem Ashraf at 8 in your lineup though. In my mind, he would do well to average more than 5 in SENA. That’s 4 runs for the nick to the boundary and the 5th a mistimed slog over midwicket off his second ball because he’s desperate to get off strike.

Even if we agree that Hassan Ali is a slogger (he also had a 23(34) a couple days ago, and a 59(53) a couple days before that, with some single digit scores in between), he still deserves that number 8 spot more than Faheem Ashraf and perhaps even Amad Butt. I take it in your combination that Hassan Ali takes the new ball with Shaheen - most of Amad’s wickets are with the new ball.

At best, we can meet somewhere halfway through and agree on the following lineup:

1. Shan Masood
2. Abdullah Shafique
3. Haider Ali
4. Babar Azam (c)
5. Saud Shakeel
6. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
7. Zafar Gohar / Sajid Khan
8. Hassan Ali
9. Amad Butt
10. Shaheen Afridi
11. Naseem Shah

If you’re really just desperate for any other 4th seamer who can bat, what about replacing Amad Butt with Hussain Talat who is coming off of a double century in the Quaid e Azam trophy right now? Bat him at 6, pushing Rizwan down to 7 and Zafar Gohar at 8, Hassan Ali at 9, and finally Shaheen and Naseem.

Even Shan bowls decent military medium - might as well give him the quota.

Central Punjab were closing their third victory in a row as Hasan Ali scored a quickfire half-century and took eight wickets on the second day of his side’s first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy eighth round match against Balochistan at the State Bank Stadium on Tuesday.

The Central Punjab captain clubbed an unbeaten 50 off 33 balls to lift his team to 369 before he recorded his 10th five-wicket haul, which bundled out Balochistan for a paltry 130, and took three more wickets after enforcing follow-on.

Balochistan were tottering at 130 for six in their second innings and needed another 109 runs to make Central Punjab, the title defenders, bat again.

Hasan smashed four sixes and as many fours to record his third half-century and second of the season after Central Punjab resumed the day at 297 for six.

Jalat Khan stood out with six for 116. This was left-arm orthodox’s third five-wicket haul of the season.

Balochistan’s first innings lasted only 38.2 overs thanks to Hasan who took five wickets for 32 from 9.2 overs. The right-arm pacer dismissed Akbar-ur-Rehman (25), Jalat Khan (one), Mohammad Talha (two), Raza-ul-Hasan (0) and Gohar Faiz (0).

Pacer Waqas Maqsood took three wickets for 38.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Adnan Akmal and captain Imran Farhat were the only batsmen to resist Central Punjab bowlers with 33 not out and 30.

With a first innings lead of 239 runs, Hasan enforced the follow-on and, once again, led the attack from front taking three wickets for 43. Waqas, from the other end, also continued to take wickets as he dismissed two batsmen for 35.

That Balochistan had levelled their first innings score while batting second was because of Ayaz Tasawar’s 50 off 62 balls (eight fours and one six). With 23, Ali Waqas was the next best run-getter in the innings.

Central Punjab, who are ranked fourth on the six-team points table, have gained 10 bonus points (four for batting and six for bowling), while fifth-placed Balochistan could add only three bowling bonus points.

At the UBL Sports Complex, Southern Punjab were struggling at 145 for five in reply of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s daunting 487.

Off-spinner Sajid Khan continued to lead Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s bowling attack as he took three wickets for 45 runs from 13 overs, while the other two batsmen were dismissed by Arshad Iqbal and Khalid Usman.

Opener Zain Abbas and Salman Ali Agha, Southern Punjab’s highest run-getter, were the notable run-getters.

Zain was unbeaten on 64 and had smashed nine fours from the 107 balls he had faced on day two, while Salman made a 53-ball 45, which included eight fours. The pair stitched a 91-run stand for the second wicket, before Sajid reduced the opposition to 134 for five from 104 for one.

Southern Punjab are 342 runs behind Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Zain will be joined by Ali Usman (six not out) on the third morning of the fixture.

Earlier, Adil Amin converted his overnight score of 76 into his career’s fourth first-class century as he scored a brilliant 172. The 30-year-old faced 330 balls and smashed 15 fours and three sixes.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa started the day’s play at 296 for three and Adil had in-form Kamran Ghulam as his partner who added 15 runs to his yesterday’s score before he was dismissed by leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood, who recorded his career’s fifth five-wicket haul with six for 163, on 160.

The pair stretched their 211-run stand from the opening day’s play to 239 before Zahid came into action and rolled over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s middle and lower-order.

Kamran struck 21 four and a six in his 285-ball knock.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who are at the top of the points table, were 310 for three at the completion of 100 overs. As such, they added three batting points to their tally while Southern Punjab could get only one bowling point. From Southern Punjab’s innings, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have already bagged a bowling point for dismissing wickets in the bracket of three to five.

A fantastic century by Sharjeel Khan gave Sindh a 150-run first innings lead over Northern at the National Stadium.

The opener crunched 17 fours and three sixes in front of the broadcast cameras, which telecasted the action live in Pakistan through PTV Sports and beamed delayed stream across the globe through PCB’s YouTube channel, in his 164-ball knock that had Sindh placed at a comfortable 353 for five.

Over the course of his second century of the season, Sharjeel stitched partnerships worth 87 and 91 with Azizullah (16) and Saud Shakeel, who made 81 off 139, after Sindh started the day on 40 for one.

Saad Khan and captain Asad Shafiq scored 41 and 46 not out, respectively, which further consolidated Sindh in the match.

When play resumes on Wednesday, Saad Ali, who is unbeaten on 23, will join Asad.

Sindh, who are placed at the bottom of the points table, have pocketed nine bonus points, while second-ranked Northern have taken two.

First innings points: Northern 2 (one batting, one bowling), Sindh 9 (four batting, five bowling)

Also, interesting to see Mohammad Nawaz make another 50 as well as taking two wickets.

Outside Asia, my Pakistan Test team would now be:

1. Shan Masood
2. Abdullah Shafique
3. Saud Shakeel
4. Babar Azam
5. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
6. Mohammad Nawaz
7. Shadab Khan
8. Faheem Ashraf or Amad Butt
9. Hasan Ali
10. Shaheen Shah Afridi
11. Naseem Shah

Inside Asia I would simply add Sajid Khan in place of the Number 8.

Pakistan don’t need to be selecting batsmen like Abid Ali, Haris Sohail and Fawad Alam who have fewer than 1000 Test runs even though they are the wrong side of 30.

At least Abdullah Shafique, Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Nawaz are young enough to develop further.

Abdullah Shafique has 1 FC game to his name. Come on :))

Saud shakil needed to average 60 plus tbis season with more than 4 hundreds this season.

He has gone missing a lot and will probably delay his chance in the pakistan cricket team.

Another 5-fer for Sajid. He's in strong contention for home tests given the dearth of off-spinners

CP need 47 runs to win. Another 5-for for Hasan Ali and a 10-for in the match. Has changed CP's fortunes after being appointed captain.
