Rahul Dravid to exit as India's head coach, Jay Shah's big new coach plan revelation [Post Updated #181]

Everyone in BCCI is nepotism hire or someone who knows someone. What is the qualification of other office bearers in BCCI? Why so much picking on Jay Shah?
Because he seems like the dumbest and most incompetent of the lot, and because he's at the top and is the administrative face of Indian cricket. His incompetence was on full-display last year. From the scheduling of the Asia Cup to announcing the World Cup schedule months before the start of the tournament. After which, a revised schedule was released where the dates or start times for 9 matches were changed. Not to mention the way in which ticket sales were mishandled; from not releasing enough tickets to the fans to the online ticketing portal being a complete mess that could not handle traffic.

India has always had cricket administrators with powerful political backgrounds. But rarely does their incompetence and ineptitude stand-out to such an extent that they become an internet meme among cricket fans.

You have some valid points and I agree to some extent. However, I have a feeling Jay Shah was going to be internet meme no matter what he ended up doing given who is his father. It doesn’t take much to be internet meme these days.

The former Indian cricket team captain, who has been the head coach of the side since 2021, said he won't be re-applying for the post. The BCCI has already advertised for the top post, with the new coach taking over from July 1. The 2024 T20 World Cup ends on June 29. Rahul Dravid was speaking ahead of the India's first match against Ireland at the T20 World Cup 2024.

Speaking to reporters ahead of India's World Cup opener against Ireland, Dravid said he enjoyed every bit of his coaching tenure. "Every tournament is important. Every game that I've coached for India has been very important for me. So for me this is no different just because it is going to be the last one that I'm in charge of," he said when asked if this tournament held more significance as it was his last one in charge of the team.

The former India captain had taken charge of the team in November 2021 following the T20 World Cup that year.

"I love doing the job. I've really enjoyed coaching India and I think it's a truly special job to do. I enjoyed working with this team and it's a great bunch of boys to work with but yeah but just considering you know unfortunately just the kind of schedules and where I find myself in the stage in my life I don't think I'll be able to reapply," he said.

Rahul Dravid reacts to #DoitforDravid T20 World Cup campaign: 'It's against who I am'

If you can get that campaign removed, I will appreciate it: Dravid

“It’s totally against who I am as a person and it’s totally against my values. You know, I don't really believe in this 'Do it for somebody'. I love that quote about somebody asking somebody else, 'Why do you want to climb Mount Everest?' and he says 'I want to climb Mount Everest because it's there. Why do we want to win this World Cup? because it's there"

“It's not for anyone, it's not for anybody, it's just there to win. I just want to play good cricket and yeah, doing it for someone is totally against who I am as a person and what I believe in so I don't want to talk about it and discuss it. If you can get that campaign removed, I will appreciate it,”

BCCI secretary Jay Shah said during an interaction with the media:

"Both coach and selector appointment will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but new coach will join from Sri Lanka series."

Rahul Bhai needs to be cut throat, he should go back to management roles or Indian A u-19 roles.
He is too soft for InTL cricket dominance, and i say that with utmost respect.

Those experienced in managing IPL teams emphasize the importance of playing as a close-knit unit, which the current team management made sure was the case. It was also a testament to the conviction of coach Rahul Dravid, who decided to stay on until this World Cup. It has also now emerged that Dravid had insisted that Rohit be the captain for this World Cup, at a time there were even doubts about his place in the squad. Both Dravid and Rohit effectively managed this diverse group of superstars. "Without such unity, winning championships is nearly impossible," explains a manager from an IPL team.

"It's good to be with good people. I mean, you said it, so I'm good. And Rahul bhai too. Rahul bhai too. No, no, he's good. I'm very happy for Rahul bhai too. He's done so much for Indian cricket. That's what Rahul Bhai means. He has worked hard with this team for the last three years. His instincts were suppressed many times," Rohit said, showing how happy he was for the coach.

The lessons from the IPL were also invaluable. The players understand how to navigate various pressures across bowling, fielding, and other aspects of the game. For instance, Suryakumar's exceptional catch in the deep underscored their ability to handle critical moments, as much as Arshdeep's final two overs and Pandya's last over. Many countries, such as the United Kingdom, boast top leagues in football and yet it doesn't translate into World Cup wins. If India have managed to succeed, it is not without the contribution and lessons from the IPL.

Rahul Dravid reveals reason behind continuing as head coach after CWC23 disappointment

After coaching India to T20 World Cup glory, Rahul Dravid revealed that he had no plans to continue as India head coach after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final defeat.

Rahul Dravid has revealed that he had decided to leave his role as India's head coach after his initial two-year term ended at the end of last year's Cricket World Cup.

He said that he had no intention of renewing his contract after the heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the final, but a call from his captain Rohit Sharma changed his mind.

"Ro, thank you very much for making that call to me in November and asking [me] to continue," Dravid said in a video posted by the BCCI.

"I think it's been such a privilege and a pleasure to work with each and every one of you, but Ro, also thanks for the time. There is a lot of time we have to chat, we have to discuss, we have to agree, we have to disagree at times, but thank you so very much."

Dravid as a coach finally added silverware to his portfolio with the T20 World Cup title win after leading India to the final in both the ICC World Test Championship and ICC ODI Cricket World Cup in 2023.

Dravid, whose tenure ended after India’s triumph in the Caribbean, stated that he didn't believe in “redemption stories”.

This was in response to a question when he was asked whether it was satisfying to lift the World Cup on the same shores where India were knocked out in the group stages of the 2007 Cricket World Cup under Dravid’s captaincy.

"I'm not usually short of words but on a day like today, for me to be part of this, I could not be more grateful," Dravid said.

"For the respect, for the kindness, for the effort that each and everyone of you have shown to me, to my coaching staff, to my support staff.

"All of you will remember these moments. We always say, it is not about the runs, it is not about the wickets, you never remember your career but you remember moments like this, so let's really enjoy."

The successor for Dravid is yet to be announced, though VVS Laxman will take up the duties of head coach of a young Indian side that will play a five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe starting July 6.

Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, has stated that the new coach's first assignment will be the Sri Lanka white-ball tour in late July.

Michael Vaughan speaking about former India coach Rahul Dravid during a show on a sports media:

"He's one of the great people of the game - honest, hardworking, and dedicated. I knew as soon as he got the Indian job that the rest of the world could be in trouble."

"I'm still staggered that they haven't won the World Test Championship and the World Cup in November, but he's brought a huge amount to the team. He was a consistent player and delivered day in and day out. It's no surprise that India became very consistent under his watch as a coach."

"He demands that the players deliver their processes day in and day out, and the performance looks after itself. Throughout his tenure as coach, India have been so consistent, rarely having bad weeks. They might have been beaten, but it's because the opposition played really good cricket."

"I don't ever remember seeing an Indian side collapse or give up - that's Rahul Dravid's driving force. He would never give up, and as a coach, he's done exactly the same."

"I predict that Gautam will take over from Rahul Dravid and do a fantastic job. Some people might say there's pressure, but I think it's a great opportunity to coach a team with so much talent and so many trophies to play for in the next few years."

"Rahul Dravid is leaving Indian cricket in a great state, and that's all you can ask for when you take a job - can you leave it in a better position when you walk away? He's certainly done that."

Thye should have continued with Rahul Dravid... Gautam Gambhir wont be able to reach the standards which dravid set for team India

In a video shared by BCCI, Rahul Dravid opened up about his coaching philosophy:

"I'm someone who actually likes continuity and don't like to chop and change too many things because I believe that creates a lot of instability and doesn't create very good environment."

"I feel that I am a part of the team whose responsibility is to create the right professional, safe, secure environment that doesn't really have a fear of failure as such but is challenging enough to push people. That has always been my endeavour."

"One of the things that we really had to manage, especially in the early part of my coaching tenure here with India. We were at the back-end of the Covid restrictions. We really had to manage their workloads through all the three different formats."

"It was definitely something that I hadn't envisaged, or not something that I thought about, but it just sort of organically happened."
