Don't think England want to bowl twice on the trot with the workload of the Jimmy and Broad in the last few years. Need a few overs rest for bowlers.

SA will last until tea time tmrw at best. England can then bat two or three sessions and still bowl them out and win the match.

Considering the form of SA, Yes. But the pitch looks quite flat and hard work for bowlers if they bat with any brain.

Anderson and Broad will bowl much tighter and anyway these mental midgets won't handle the scoreboard pressure at all. But yes the pitch has flattened out . So probably declaring is well justified.

Atherton is speaking sense here. SA looks disintegrated, body language shows they have already thrown in the towel.

Pitch is flat and they can bat. Should get that into their heads.

It was an emotional celebration from him to reach his first Test hundred in the week when his father, David Bairstow, hanged himself after a long fight with depression in 1998.

Jonny has done his dad proud.

I remember that dark day.

Bluey played a few tests in WI and was an effective ODI hitter, but was around at the same time as Knott.
 
glad Bairstow got his 100 hes deserved to finally get a big score he is a talented player and striker of a ball even though he does have alot of deficencies as a player as well. Ideal batsmen at 7 for england right now
 
England need to keep slowly plugging away scoreboard pressure will take its effect on S.A here
 
Brilliant batting by stokes and bairstow, the pitch still had plenty of bounce and great carry; good bowling would have been rewarded but stokes and bairstow really put the bowlers under pressure and never gave them an inch to get on top. They could have batted on but more then enough on the board to declare. Amla will be under immense pressure, SA didn't prepare well enough for Smith's retirement and were caught off guard
 
Were suggesting on comms that maybe England didn't review the one off the thigh because 'Amla is a walker'. Didn't he knick one behind last game that England didn't end up reviewing :D?

Amla is a walker, I'm not sure he or anybody actually heard that nick. That new snicko gadget did find a very, very faint edge iirc though.

This is THE partnership for SA. If England break this early they are in the box seat.
 
cook rotating england bowlers well here and not letting S.A batsmen settle which means thats chances of taking regular wickets should happen here.

That is a very dangerous thing to do against excellent batters. ENG may not get another chance for a long while.

This is one area where England could improve - more decent slippers to back up Cook. Whereas the cordon Cook-Flintoff-Swann-Strauss was the envy of the world....
 
I find Finn quite frustrating to watch. Good bowler of course but just feel there should be something a bit more explosive in his action and another 5mph on average.
 
Bad miss from Root to drop the slip catch off De Villiers, however he has contributed more than enough over the last 12 months to make this forgivable in his case.

Pretty much the first mistake that England have made in this match. Hopefully it is not a super-costly one.

AB and Amla will need to bat pretty much all day tomorrow if S.A are even get close to avoiding the follow on, its time for S.As main two players to stand up and perform again for the team when its needed most.
