Not always do you see a bowler getting severely criticised for his arm around an opposition batter, that too with a smile on his face. Then again, not often does a bowler do that immediately after dismissing him in a hard-fought series. The bowler in question here is India pacer Akash Deep. The batter to receive Akash Deep's arm was Ben Duckett.

It happened in the 13th over of the England innings when Duckett, in his attempt to play another reverse ramp, got an outside edge to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. This was the fourth time Duckett was dismissed by Akash Deep but for the first time, it was after the left-hander had given a fair bit of tap to the Indian pacer. Duckett hit four fours and a six off Akash Deep in his blazing innings of 43 off 38 balls before getting dismissed.

Akash Deep had the last laugh for sure but what he did after getting the wicket of Duckett became a talking point. The Indian pacer wrapped his arm around Duckett's shoulder and had a few words of wisdom, which were not received well by former cricketers Ricky Ponting, Michael Atherton and Dinesh Karthik.

Ponting, in fact, agreed that he wouldn't have shied away from landing a right hook if Akash Deep had done something similar to him during his playing days.

"I can think of a few batsmen down the years that would take umbrage at this, and I'm looking very much in your direction. That would have been a Ponting right hook, wouldn't it?" asked sports presenter Ian Warnd in a Sky Sports Lunch break show on Day 2.

"Probably yeah, probably," replied Ponting.

Thankfully, Duckett didn't see things like Ponting. The England opener took Akash Deep's send-off rather sprotingly before walking off.

Ponting said his respect for Duckett grew after seeing how the attacking opener handled things after getting dismissed.

"Although I mean, when I saw it, I just thought they must have been mates or played against each other somewhere or together. I would like to have something like that. I mean, you don't see that every day, maybe in a local park game or not in a test match that's been played as fiercely as this series has been played. I love the way that Ben Duckett plays his cricket. I think I like him more now to not to be able to react to that," Ponting added.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s fortuitous half-century turned India’s slender first-innings deficit into a 52-run lead on a dramatic second day of the fifth Test against England at The Oval.

On a pitch offering unpredictable bounce, 15 wickets fell on Friday as bowlers held sway. India, resuming at 219-7, added just five runs in the morning to be bowled out for 224. England responded with an explosive start, racing to 100 in just 13 overs, but collapsed to 247 all out, taking a slim 23-run lead.

Jaiswal, dropped twice, counterattacked with an unbeaten 51 off 49 balls to lift India to 75-2 before bad light ended play early. With England leading the series 2-1, both sides have a strong chance, as a result, it now looks likely in the series decider.

He would have or at least elbowed him and Akash would've deserved it the way Watson did when he got in Gambhir's way.

The problem with some newer cricketers in India is there seems to be so much pressure to make it to reels or social shares and they end up behaving like clowns in the process. They tend to calm down after a few years though.

Not really, ever since BCCIs gigantic wealth expansion, IPL and India's booming economy quadrupled, Ponting has become another typical Australian player who sucks and butters up to the Indians. As captain in 2007 he easily fell under Cricket Australia pressure to let go of the monkey gate charge against Harbhajan after India threatened to abandon the tour which would have bankrupted Australian Cricket.

Ponting is actually the one who sucks up the least, unlike some of the others. Speaks his mind even though he is heavily involved in the indian franchise scene.

Weird to see that. Last time I vividly remember someone doing something similar was Akhtar to Tendulkar when he was patting him on the head condescendingly.

He didn't say he will punch him lol THey put the words in his mouth. He just acknowledged. Ya it was super weird. His personal life is a struggle. Lost his father early. Being bread winner for so long. Also his sister is suffering from cancer. So he probably had no clue what should do what not to do. KL Rahul pulled him back

That was a strange move by the bowler.

Batsmen are usually seething when they get out, and a bowler putting his arm around them without a reason is just asking for trouble.

They aren’t even mates which makes so weird. I think the Eng coach mentioned that the bowler didn’t even say anything! What was he trying to do??

Duckett didn’t react cos Indians are generally not intimidating. He prob went off to the pavilion and had a laugh.

What did he do, put his arm round him and say “kindly do the needful saarrr”?
Love when brown people are racist against each other. Ar least they are educated enough to use 'saar", your only export to the world is terrorism and this kind of posts shows to the world exactly why it's a failed nation thinks

Don’t talk facts. They don’t like it here.

It’s funny when they accuse Indians of racism and civility when their own country mean are an embarrassment wherever they go🙄

That was weird from Akash. Should have never happened.

Duckett kept its cool. Imagine doing this to prime Hayden or Inzi.

I don’t think that’s racist - Indians are not intimidating and that’s a fact.

Indians also brown nose A LOT in the west. That’s also well known.

Though Canada would certainly differ on your comment about who exports terrorism

Are they?

Says the person whose fellow countrywoman was, weeks ago, caught stealing from Target? “I’m ready to pay for it. Please sir. Don’t embarrass me

Missing Kohli captaincy days during our bowling

Also just recently Kohli was bullying 18 year old debutant Konstas, what was the result?

All this bollywood acting don't mean anything when the end result is indian team losing in a horrible way

Indian team is so hateable. There is not a single likeable player in the team.
They all are clowns with mediocre performance they have only won 2 tests and they have played 12 tests and lost 8.
Embarrassing team with clown players and clown fans.

What can Ricky do anyway??

There is nothing he can do.

And sultan thinks he is intimidating lol.

Come down to brisbane Sydney etc and you will see most bouncers in all big clubs are guess what? Indians

Never seen any Pakistani or hardly any Aus. Mostly islanders and Indians.

No one in the west distinguishes between South Asians - Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, sri lankans, all are same to them. They all do like to think they are superior than each other, which is where such posts like yours come from.

But the average western guy just mocks us all and these statements are definitely used to be racist. They have a good laugh because a brown pakistani is trying to pretend to be more superior than a brown Indians by using a term used by them to be racist to all south Asians

Nothing new. This is the chhaprification of India. If you live here, you know exactly what I mean. It's all for the cameras and reels now. If you are still unsure, look around you and observe. :virat1 :inti

ICC needs to introduce red card and yellow card. They can call it "barbaric behavior correction system" or BBCS.

Players who can't behave should get those cards. Physical contact (like the one Kohli did to Konstas) should result in a straight red card. :inti

It seems to becoming more common amongst Indians. Uncouth behavior is labeled as aggressive and confident. Even in the other thread we had Gambhirs comments being defended by some as a stance against colonialism.

Players will sometimes get emotional on the pitch and the emotion can get the better of him. Most of the time while it's not nice to watch you can understand it, sometimes emotions just get the better of someone, especially when representing the country in a high intensity sports match.

However physical contact like this incident and Kohli, Konstas should always result in punishment. It very quickly turn into something ugly if the other side reacts.

What about the honorable Shakib Al Hasan?

Shakib got banned, penalized heavily.

justifying negative behavior is so pathetic and then you guys wonder why indians aren't that much liked in general.

Its like talking to an automated wife answer machine, you provide them valid argument and they dig up something irrelevant centuries ago just to feel a 5 minute satisfaction of winning an argument in their head.

We are ponting out the hypocrisy of those who love to point finger at others and pretend they are so civilized, while their own team has done and has been doing much worse.

As the Prophet Jesus said - John 8:7: "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her"

P.S all over the world Indians are liked way way more than Pakistanis and Bangladesh, to the extent that many of the later pretend to be Indians and even open shops under Indian names

Kohli was not the captain in this series. Our bowling was different under his regime and aggressive.

Exactly! These are highly competitive, driven and fiendishly uncompromising individuals who in the moment act like any highly competitive individual does: like a psychopath and they don’t always have situational awareness or adequate emotional intelligence of how to celebrate. Good he got the reprimand but beyond that I won’t chastise him further.

Behavior that is unacceptable is going beyond the rules of the game to win or gain an advantage like ball tampering, using your body to block throws from fielders, taking performance enhancing drugs, match fixing, spot fixing and of course claiming catches on the bounce.
