Rising crime in the UK

Mayor Sadiq Khan is facing calls to investigate the increasingly disproportionate homicide rate among black Londoners. Figures obtained by Tory assembly member Shaun Bailey show there has been a 68 per cent increase in the number of black Londoners killed in the past five years, when compared with the five previous years.

The total number of homicides in London increased by 21.7 per cent, from 547 between 2011-15 to 666 between 2016-20, according to Metropolitan police data sourced by the GLA Conservatives.

But the number of black victims increased from 173 to 292 between the two five-year periods – a rise of 68.7 per cent.

The proportion of deaths involving black people has also increased from 31.6 per cent (173 out of 547) to 43.8 per cent (292 out of 666).

However, the total number of homicides fell from 151 in 2019 to 127 last year, probably partly as a consequence of lockdowns. The number of black Londoners killed also fell, from 68 to 55.

Black people make up about 13.3 per cent of the capital’s population.

Mr Bailey, who was defeated by Mr Khan in the mayoral race, but has become chairman of the assembly’s police and police and crime committee, is expected to call for cross-party support for a motion being considered by the London Assembly on Thursday.

Mr Bailey said: “For many black Londoners, our city feels unsafe. And–tragically–they are right to feel that way.

“Not only did the number of homicides soar to an 11-year high on Sadiq Khan’s watch, but the number of black victims rose by over 68 per cent between 2016 and 2020, compared to the previous five-year period.

“Londoners both black and white are crying out for the Mayor to make our city safe. That’s why I am calling for the Mayor to review his policing policies to keep black Londoners safe – to ditch failed ideas and find new ones.”

Mr Bailey, a former youth worker and former Downing Street advisor to David Cameron, said “scan and search” systems should be used to remove knives from the streets.

He also called for more police on the beat and more youth workers.

“Unless the Mayor conducts this review, he risks failing a whole generation of black Londoners,” Mr Bailey said.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “The Mayor’s thoughts are with the families and loved-ones of those who have lost their lives to senseless violence in the capital. While violence was falling before the pandemic and over the past year knife crime, youth violence and gun crime have come down further, there’s still much more to do.

“The Mayor’s Action Plan to improve trust and confidence in the Met highlighted that between 2008 and 2018, Black Londoners were 1.8 times more likely to be victims of knife crime than non-Black Londoners.

“That is why tackling violence is the Mayor’s number one priority. Sadiq is leading from the front by being tough on crime and tough on the complex causes of crime, investing in the Met Police to ensure there are now 1,300 more police officers on the streets, while London’s Violence Reduction Unit continues lead a public health approach to tackling the underlying causes of violence and provides positive opportunities for young people.”

Mohammed Al-Araimi, 20, was stabbed to death on 5 December 2019 in a London alleyway, while fellow King's College student Nasser Kanoo, now 22, was also attacked.

Both were wearing watches worth thousands of pounds at the time and had been out for dinner.

The university friends were targeted by Badir Al-Nazi, 24, and Arseboon Dilbaro, 23, who had been laying in wait close to the famous department store.

Kuwaiti citizen Al-Nazi previously admitted manslaughter and having a knife but denied murder, claiming he did not mean to stab Mr Al-Araimi - the son of property magnate Sheikh Abdullah Al-Araimi.

A jury at Inner London Crown Court found Al-Nazi guilty of murder, and wounding Mr Kanoo with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

Al-Nazi was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 27 years for murder, as well as an eight-year sentence for wounding with intent and six months for possession of a bladed article, to be served concurrently.

Mr Al-Araimi, who was wearing a £37,000 Patek Philippe watch, was stabbed in the chest. He collapsed beside the Harrods Christmas tree and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Kanoo, who had an £8,000 Rolex, was stabbed in the hip and was able to recover from his injury.

German national Dilbaro blamed the attacks on his co-defendant.

Dilbaro was acquitted of murder, manslaughter and having a knife but found guilty of wounding Mr Kanoo by assisting Al-Nazi when he blocked the victim's escape, the court heard.

Dilbaro was sentenced to 33 months in prison. Both men were cleared of attempted robbery.

Judge Usha Karu said to Al-Nazi: "There is no doubt that you knew full well what you were doing when you used a knife that evening to murder Mr Al-Araimi and wound Mr Kanoo. In the space of eight seconds, a life was lost."

In a statement, Mr Al-Araimi's brother, Raid, said his sibling "spread joy and kindness to anyone who crossed his path" and condemned the killing as a "cowardly attack".

Mr Kanoo said in a statement: "Never did I imagine that a casual dinner would evolve into the last time I would see my best friend Mohammed or the last time I could call him by his name.

"I can only hope the offenders realise that action, which lasted a mere eight seconds, has had a grave, detrimental impact on the lives of our loved ones.

"No matter what the motive was, there is no convincing enough reason to take an innocent life away and traumatise another."

Al-Nazi claimed that, minutes before the incident, he had asked the friends for a cigarette but that Mr Al-Araimi had denied his request and insulted him.

But this account was not supported by any evidence, the court heard.

Teacher Sabina Nessa may have been murdered by a stranger as she took a five-minute walk to meet a friend in a pub, police have said.

The 28-year-old never arrived and was attacked in Cator Park in southeast London.

Giving an update on the police investigation at the scene on Thursday, Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry said the possibility the primary school teacher was attacked by a stranger is "definitely a line of enquiry that we're looking at".

Her body, which was "off the track that you would normally walk", was found by someone walking their dog, the local policing commander added.

"Significant lines of inquiry" are being followed. Regarding a motive, officers are keeping a "completely open mind", Det Chief Supt Lawry said.

An "extensive crime scene" will remain for the next couple of days, he added.

Asked whether he was worried the killer could attack someone else, he said: "We have lines of inquiry that we're pursuing at the moment.

"It's always a concern that it may happen, but that's not something that we have any intelligence on at this time."

Ms Nessa, who taught at Rushey Green Primary School, left her home in Astell Road, between Eltham and Lewisham, just before 8.30pm last Friday, detectives said.

Her body was found close to the OneSpace community cafe, inside the park, the following day.

She was on her way to The Depot, a pub on Pegler Square in Kidbrooke Village.

"Sabina's journey should have taken just over five minutes but she never made it to her destination," Detective Inspector Joe Garrity said.

"We know the community are rightly shocked by this murder - as are we - and we are using every resource available to us to find the individual responsible."

A post-mortem examination, carried out on Monday, was inconclusive.

Reclaim These Streets, which campaigned on women's safety following the murder of Sarah Everard, said it will hold a vigil in Peglar Square at 7pm on Friday.

Police will be attending, Mr Lawry said, because officers are "part of the community and wish to stand with the community at this time".

Asked whether people should be concerned, he said: "The streets are safe for women - I'd like to reassure the public around that. I'd like to reassure that people should be free to walk around free from fear and my officers will make sure that that can take place."

Mr Garrity appealed for witnesses, saying: "We are incredibly grateful for all of those who have so far come forward and spoken to us but we believe there are still others out there who may have information that could help.

"If you think you saw Sabina or any suspicious behaviour in or around the park on Friday evening please speak to us."

A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of murder and released under investigation, police said previously.

The headteacher at Ms Nessa's school, Lisa Williams, said her death is "desperately sad", adding that she was "kind, caring and absolutely dedicated to her pupils".

Boris Johnson's thoughts are with Ms Nessa's family and friends, Downing Street said.

A spokesman for the prime minister said a strategy on violence against women and girls, introduced earlier this year, will "drive long-term change" and "hopefully prevent these crimes".

The mayor of London said violence against women should be treated with the same priority as counter-terrorism.

Sadiq Khan added that he is in "close contact" with the Metropolitan Police and that his "thoughts and prayers are with Sabina Nessa's family".

He described violence against women as an "epidemic" and said it is "really important that people like me, who have not had to live the experiences of women and girls, listen to the experience of women and girls and work with them to have policies that address this awful issue".

Mr Khan added: "It's just awful what happened to Sabina last Friday. When I think of Bibaa Henry, Nicole Smallman, Sarah Everard, it's heart-breaking."

A man has been charged with the murder of primary school teacher Sabina Nessa, who was killed as she walked to meet a friend in south-east London.

Koci Selamaj, 36, was arrested in Eastbourne, East Sussex, on Sunday.

Mr Selamaj, of Terminus Road in the town, will appear at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police said.

Ms Nessa, 28, was found in Cator Park in Kidbrooke, a few minutes' walk from her home, on Saturday 18 September.

The evening before, she had been making her way to The Depot bar in Kidbrooke Village but never arrived.

Tributes have continued to be left in nearby Pegler Square, where a vigil was held on Friday, and a book of condolence has been opened in the One Space community centre, close to where Ms Nessa's body was found.

More than 500 people joined the vigil, during which the teacher's sister Jebina Yasmin Islam told those gathered that she had "lost an amazing, caring, beautiful sister, who left this world far too early".

She said her family's world had been "shattered", adding: "We are simply lost for words."

Hundreds of tributes were posted on social media, including a message from the Duchess of Cambridge.

Rapper Hypo stabbed to death at Jubilee party in east London

The rapper ex-boyfriend of singer Emeli Sande has been stabbed to death at a Jubilee party.

Hypo, real name Lamar Jackson, was attacked in front of a "large number of people" at the bash in Redbridge, east London, police said.

Despite efforts to save him the 39-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests have been made. Scotland Yard is treating the case as a murder and has appealed for witnesses.

Det Ch Insp Laurence Smith said it was possible the stabbing, in Chigwell Road, Woodford Green, and its aftermath were captured on people's phones.

"I would urge anyone who is yet to speak with us to come forward and let us know what you saw," he said.

"Please take a look and call us. It is vital that we establish what happened."

'Hackney legend'
Video appearing to show the death of Mr Jackson, from Hackney, was shared on social media, with fans quick to condemn those passing it on.

Tributes were also quick to pour in, with fans of the grime artist hailing him as "a pioneer" in the industry.

Others said he was "a clean-hearted guy" and "a real Hackney legend".

Sadly agree. The signs of visible drug use are rising.

My normal commutes in Scotland/North of England have seen a marked increase in levels of drug use and wasted drug users in city centres/town centres. It's generally one of the first signs that things are getting bad.

That will eventually lead to an increase in crime and anti social behaviour as people find new ways to fund their habits, and more people join them as the effects of high cost of living start to kick in.

It will be interesting to see how Brits general orderliness and respect for property holds up as poverty takes hold. When there's plenty of social benefits and generous govt subsidies it's not that hard to resist resorting to crime.

The challenge is the pace of price growth outstrips any govt. help. I think Ms.Patel needs to start shipping the poor to Rwanda as well. The thought must have come up for discussion!

<b>Sebastian Kalinowski: Mother and partner guilty of murdering teenage son</b>

A mother and her partner have been found guilty of the murder of 15-year-old Sebastian Kalinowski.

Agnieszka Kalinowska, 35, and Andrzej Latoszewski, 38, tortured the schoolboy for months before he died in Huddersfield in August 2021.

Sebastian was beaten with a bed slat, whipped with an extension cable and stabbed with a needle, jurors heard.

The couple had denied murder but were found guilty after a six-week trial at Leeds Crown Court.

Sebastian died in hospital on 13 August of an infection caused by "untreated complications of multiple rib fractures", after weeks of what prosecutors described as "cruel assaults and abuse".

The teenager arrived in the UK from Poland in October 2020 to live with his mother and her long-term partner, the court heard.

However, the arrangement quickly turned sour, with one family friend telling jurors they believed the couple came to view him as a "hindrance".

Over the following months the teenager was repeatedly beaten by the pair and subjected to cruel and humiliating punishments if they thought he had misbehaved.

The pair themselves described their actions in text messages to each other as "torture".

CCTV footage taken from a camera system installed by Latoszewski to spy on Sebastian captured the abuse.

In one 30-minute clip played to the jury he is seen hitting the boy more than 100 times, pausing at one stage to wipe the sweat from his face, while Kalinowska watched TV and ate toast.

On the day before Sebastian's death, Latoszewski was seen on CCTV forcing food and drink into the boy's mouth and stabbing him a number of times with a needle in the groin and thigh.

Prosecutors said he was "apparently laughing whilst he did so" before Kalinowska took over stabbing the boy with the needle.

Sebastian was also verbally abused by the couple and ordered to address Latozsewski as Mr or Sir.

The court heard that on the day he died Latoszewski waited more than two hours after finding him unconscious before calling for an ambulance.

He later claimed Sebastian had drowned in the bath and that his injuries had been the result of a fall from a tree or a fight.

The jury took just three hours and 39 minutes before returning unanimous verdicts against both defendants.

After the verdicts were delivered Kalinowska began crying in the dock.

Daniel Lee from the Crown Prosecution Service said it was "impossible to contemplate the agony and fear this young boy experienced, inflicted in his own home, by his supposed care-givers".

Adjourning sentencing until October at the earliest, Mrs Justice Lambert said the jury's dedication to the case had been "truly extraordinary".

"You have had to endure quite horrifying footage of Sebastian suffering great pain over a long period of time and then his death," she said.

"I take the view, and I don't think there'll be anyone in this court who would disagree, you have gone beyond the call of duty. Therefore I take this step of discharging you from all jury service in the future."

Det Ch Insp Tony Nicholson, who led the investigation, said the jury had sat through some "very harrowing evidence in what has been a lengthy and difficult court process".

"Detectives and partners in the CPS firmly believe that the charge of murder truly reflected the physical abuse Latoszewski and Kalinowska inflicted on Sebastian, and we are pleased they have been found guilty of this offence," he said.

"We await their sentencing and our thoughts are with Sebastian's relatives in Poland."

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, welcomed the verdict and said it was a "deeply upsetting and truly shocking" case of abuse.

"I will never understand how someone could treat any child, let alone their own, with such abhorrent cruelty and contempt," she added.

Helen Westerman, from the NSPCC, said Sebastian's mother and her partner were the "very people who should have been nurturing him".

"People will be asking how any child in our society could suffer such an appalling campaign of abuse without anyone intervening.

"That is why it is so important that no stone is left unturned in the review looking into the circumstances around his death," she said.

A spokesperson for Kirklees Safeguarding Children Partnership said a review of the case had been commissioned, adding that "the outcome will be published in as timely a manner as possible".

Two men have died in separate shootings in London within the space of 24 hours, police have confirmed.

A 22-year-old man was shot on High Road, Wood Green, at about 21:30 BST on Sunday and died at the scene. He has not yet been named.

The death follows another shooting just over four miles away in Waltham Forest.

Sam Brown, 28, took himself to hospital after being shot at a gathering in Cheney Row Park. He later died and a murder investigation has been launched.

Police said one man had been arrested in connection with the Waltham Forest shooting.

No arrests have been made over the Wood Green shooting, but detectives said the victim's next of kin had been informed.

Elsewhere in London, a man in his 40s remains in a life-threatening condition after being stabbed in Playford Road, Seven Sisters.

He was found injured 06:15 BST on Sunday, the Met said.

The two fatal shootings follow another killing in the early hours of 19 July, when a 26-year-old man was shot in Bruckner Street, Queen's Park, west London. Seven people were arrested over the death and later released under investigation.

Up until then, there had been no firearms killings in London since 31 October last year.

In 2021, there were 12 fatal shootings among a total of 134 homicides recorded by the Met Police.

Earlier this year, in April, the force said it had seen a reduction in gun crime, with the number of all shootings, including fatal and non-fatal, down from from 283 in 2019/20 to 196 in 2021/22.

There is no ongoing threat to the wider public, the Met Police said. The man's condition is not known.

The man was treated by air ambulance staff before being taken to hospital. No other injuries have been reported.

Significant cordons and road closures are in place.

Girl, 9, shot dead in Liverpool as police launch murder investigation

Merseyside Police has launched an investigation after officers attended a house on Kingsheath Avenue, Knotty Ash, at 10pm on Monday following reports an unknown male had fired a gun inside the property, according to a statement from the force.

The nine-year-old girl suffered a gunshot injury to the chest and was taken in a critical condition to hospital, where she later died.

A man also suffered gunshot wounds to his body and a woman suffered a gunshot injury to her hand during the incident inside the house, the force added.

They have both been taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: "This is a truly shocking incident in which tragically a young and innocent girl has been shot and sadly died.

"Our thoughts and condolences go to her family and friends at this very difficult time. No parent should ever have to suffer the loss of a child in these dreadful circumstances.

"This crime is abhorrent and our communities must come forward and tell us who is responsible.

"This cowardly individual does not deserve to be walking the streets and I would urge those who know anything to speak to us and tell us what they know so that we can put the person responsible behind bars where they belong.

"We are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry as a matter of urgency and would ask for dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage from anyone who lives, works or was visiting the area of Kingsheath Avenue last night."

Police have described the moment a gunman shot into the house of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel, killing her and injuring her mother.

Olivia was killed shortly after 10pm on Monday night after a 35-year-old man, being chased by another man with a gun, forced his way into her house.

The gunman followed and put his hand through a gap in the door, before shooting blind around the corner.

Olivia was shot in the chest and fatally injured where she stood at the bottom of the stairs, while her mother Cheryl was shot in the arm.

There were two further shots at the 35-year-old man inside the house, hitting him in the body, before the attacker made off on foot.

Friends of the man who forced himself into the house picked him up from outside in a dark Audi and took him to hospital "while Olivia lay dying", said Chief Constable Serena Kennedy. The vehicle they travelled in has now been seized.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Kameen said: "We now believe that around 10pm two men were walking along Kingsheath Avenue from the direction of Finch Lane.

"At that time they were approached by a lone person - potentially a male - who was wearing a black padded jacket, a black balaclava with a peak, dark pants, and black gloves. This individual was approximately 5ft 7ins tall and of slim build, and they were carrying a handgun."

He said this person shot at the two men, causing them to run away.

After hearing gunshots on the street Olivia's mother opened the door to the family's house. The man being chased then pushed his way into their home.

After being shot Olivia was taken to Alder Hey hospital in a critical condition, where she later died.

The man and her mother are being treated in hospital for their injuries. The 35-year-old hasn't spoken yet as a result of his injuries.

Rebecca Wilkinson, head teacher at St Margaret Mary's Catholic Junior School - which Olivia attended - said: "Our school community is devasted at the sad loss of Olivia. We are in shock and disbelief at such tragic news.

"Olivia was a much-loved member of our school. She had a beautiful smile, a lovely sense of humour, and a bubbly personality. She was kind-hearted and would go out of her way to help others. She loved to perform and recently participated in the school production of The Wizard of Oz. Olivia will be missed greatly by staff and children at our school.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this extremely sad time."

Cllr Graham Morgan, leader of Knowsley Council, added: "I am shocked and saddened to hear about Olivia's untimely and tragic death. She had her whole life ahead of her and it is hard to comprehend her having it cut short in such terrible circumstances.

"I know that Olivia was a popular pupil at St Margaret Mary's Catholic Junior School in Huyton. She enjoyed school, had lots of friends, and would go out of her way to help others. She also recently took part in the school's production of The Wizard of Oz.

"We will ensure that the staff and pupils at the school are given whatever support they need at such an awful time for them. My thoughts and condolences go to Olivia's family and friends at this very sad time."

Intended victim of shooting that killed Olivia Pratt-Korbel is named - reports

The intended victim of the shooting that killed nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel is a convicted burglar called Joseph Nee, according to reports.

Nee, 35, was jailed for 45 months in 2018 after admitting two counts of burglary, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving whilst disqualified, according to the Liverpool Echo.

He was part of a group that led officers on a high-speed chase before they were captured, the newspaper said.

Merseyside Police said he was arrested earlier for breaching his licence conditions during the shooting and will be recalled to prison.

Although his arrest wasn't directly linked with Olivia's death, he will be questioned in relation to the shooting.

Nee, who was also shot at the scene, was taken to hospital by friends in a black Audi.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a nine-year-old girl was fatally shot in her own home.

Olivia Pratt-Korbel was hit in the chest as her mother struggled with a gunman at the door of their house in Dovecot, Liverpool, on Monday.

Police said a 36-year-old man from Huyton was detained after an operation involving armed officers in Merseyside on Thursday night.

He was also arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder.

Olivia was killed after Cheryl Korbel, 46, opened her front door on Kingsheath Avenue at 22:00 BST in response to a commotion outside.

The intended target of the attack, 35-year-old Joseph Nee, was being chased by a gunman.

The men - complete strangers to the family - burst in and Olivia was fatally shot.

Ms Korbel was shot in the wrist as she tried to shut the door.

She has now been released from hospital.

Nee, from Dovecot, was shot in the upper body and taken to hospital in a black Audi by a third man.

Once his treatment is completed, Nee will be recalled to prison for allegedly breaching the terms of his licence conditions.

The convicted drug dealer was jailed for three years and nine months in 2018 for burglary.

He was also previously convicted of two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving while disqualified.

Olivia was described by her family as a "unique, chatty, nosey little girl who broke the mould when she was born".

In a statement, they said Olivia "lived [life] to the most she could, and would blow people away with her wit and kindness.

"We as a family are heartbroken and have lost a huge part of our life."

A second man has been arrested by armed police on suspicion of the murder of nine year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel.

The 33-year-old, from Dovecot, was also arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder.

He was detained by armed officers on Lunsford Road on Friday afternoon.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "The investigation into Olivia's tragic murder is ongoing and we still need to build up a strong evidential picture so that we can bring those responsible to justice."

Earlier, detectives released an image of an Audi Q3 that was believed to have taken Joseph Nee, the 35-year-old man who was injured in the shooting, to hospital.

The Villa manager said it had been a "tough week for everyone from Liverpool".

He added: "I'm personally devastated - I've got a 10-year-old daughter myself - so I can't imagine what the family are going through right now. And I hope that the family get justice as soon as possible.

"I suppose the message I wanna give is, do the right thing.

"If you know anything that's linked to the situation - or any of the other situations you're alluding to - please help the family get justice because it's been a tough week and I don't like to read or see things about my city like that."

Liverpool deaths: Thousands pay tribute to victims

Thousands of football fans joined in a tribute to Olivia Pratt-Korbel as arrests continued after four killings in Liverpool in a week.

Applause rang out in the ninth minute of Liverpool's game in memory of the schoolgirl who was shot on Monday.

Balloons were also released at Sefton Park in tribute to Ashley Dale, who was gunned down in her garden on Sunday.

It comes as a fourth person was arrested on suspicion of the murder of 22-year-old Sam Rimmer on 16 August.

He was with a group of friends in Lavrock Bank cul-de-sac when they were shot at by riders on two electric bikes, Merseyside Police said.

A 23-year-old man from Liverpool is being interviewed by detectives after he was detained on suspicion of murder.

A 17-year-old boy and two men, aged 20 and 21, who were previously arrested on suspicion of murder have since been bailed.

An appeal for information was made by Merseyside Police before Liverpool's game against Bournemouth at Anfield, where fans sang You'll Never Walk Alone in tribute to Olivia.

Two men, aged 33 and 36, have been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

The girl was shot after a gunman chased a man, both of whom had no links to her family, into her home.

Her mother was shot in the wrist as she tried to the shut the door but the attacker then fired two more shots at the man he had pursued.

Each of the arrested men have also been detained on two counts of attempted murder.

A man has been shot dead by police in south London.

Officers said they were pursuing a "suspect vehicle" at about 21:50 BST on Monday and ended the chase by making "tactical contact" in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was subsequently shot and died in hospital at about 00:15.

Efforts are under way to contact his family, the Met said, and the police watchdog is investigating.

Police cordons and road closures are in place.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said investigators had been sent to the scene to start gathering evidence.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with all of those affected by this terrible incident," it said in a statement.

A 39-year-old man, who lives on nearby New Park Road, said the car drove along his street before turning into Kirkstall Gardens.

He said: "A police car came down Kirkstall Gardens and crashed into him.

"Another police car came in behind him and they had him locked in at the bottom of Kirkstall Gardens.

"The car was immobile when he was shot. The bang was really loud."

<b>The new Metropolitan Police commissioner has said he would be "happy" for his daughters to walk around London at night, as he vowed to make the capital's streets safer.</b>

<I>Sir Mark Rowley's comments come as the force faces pressure to deal with its culture and public trust, alongside issues around women's safety.</I>

Sir Mark, who took over as the boss at Scotland Yard earlier this month, told LBC radio that police can offer more focus on male offenders to make the streets safer for women and girls.

He told host Nick Ferrari: "There are many men in the city, sadly, who are stalkers, they're rapists, they're involved in domestic violence.

"The thing we bring to solving this problem, alongside other agencies who offer more supportive role to victims, the thing we bring most of all, is the ability to identify and target those dangerous individuals."

Sir Mark said he wants to show the public progress in key areas in 100 days, and wants to bring the force out of special measures within 12 to 18 months.

His comments follow an open letter where he promised to be "ruthless" in kicking out corrupt, misogynist and racist police officers.

This comes amid pressure on the Met to address its poor culture and a catalogue of failings and scandals.

It has come under scrutiny over cases including officers who shared photos of the bodies of two murdered sisters and the abduction, rape and murder of Sarah Everard by off-duty PC Wayne Couzens.

The force also faces pressure to address women's safety in light of cases like the death of Sabina Nessa, who was murdered at random by a man, while walking through a London park.

Sir Mark also dismissed suggestions that firearms officers threatened to walk out in protest against the suspension of their colleague following the fatal shooting of Chris Kaba.

He told LBC that the suggestions were "misreported nonsense".

Chris Kaba, a 24-year-old unarmed black man, was killed by an officer in south London following a police chase on 5 September. Although the officer who shot Mr Kaba has been suspended, the force has been criticised for its handling of the case.

Sir Mark told the station: "I have a very, very dedicated group of firearms officers who go out day in and day out, confronting the most extraordinarily difficult situations to protect London and they wouldn't put their firearms down and let down London."

Mr Kaba's case has sparked widespread protests, with members of his family accusing the force of racism.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct watchdog is investigating the shooting and will look at whether race was a factor.

Sir Mark added that the force will do "everything possible to help the IOPC" so "the truth can be laid out in front of whatever legal process follows".

A man has been charged with the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel, who was shot in her home in Liverpool.

The nine-year-old was fatally wounded as her mother tried to stop a gunman chasing another man into their house.

Thomas Cashman, 34, of West Derby, Liverpool, has also been charged with the attempted murder of Olivia's mother Cheryl Korbel and Joseph Nee.

Olivia was shot in the chest and her mother injured as Mr Nee, a convicted burglar, was chased into their home.

Mr Cashman has also been charged with two counts of possession of a firearm to endanger life.

Paul Russell, 40, of Snowberry Road, West Derby, has been charged with assisting an offender.

Both men are due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Olivia's mother was shot in the wrist as she tried to shut the door to stop two men entering her house on Kingsheath Avenue, Dovecot, at about 22:00 BST on 22 August.

<b>Relatives of a man shot dead by police have called for an urgent decision on criminal charges in the case, saying they "need answers".</b>

Chris Kaba's family was speaking outside a coroner's court after a brief initial hearing, a month after his death in Streatham Hill, south London.

Mr Kaba had been driving his Audi while being followed by an unmarked police car with no lights or sirens minutes before he was shot, the Inner South London Coroner's Court was told.

He was then blocked by a marked police vehicle, with "contact" between the two cars, before a marksman fired a single shot through the windscreen, hitting him in the head.

Mr Kaba was not armed.

His cousin Jefferson Bosela said outside court: "We need answers. Not just this family, but the whole of London - the whole of the country - needs to know how something like this could occur.

"How can a young man, sitting in a car, unarmed, be shot in the head by police in London in 2022?

"This should never have happened. It must never happen again. We must never accept this as normal. Someone must be held accountable."

He added: "An urgent decision on criminal charges is critical for this family, and many others, to have faith in the system that is supposed to bring them justice."

The shooting is being investigated as a possible homicide but the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) probe is expected to take between six and nine months - too long, Mr Kaba's family say.

Dean Brown from the IOPC told the court the officers that day were told the Audi was linked to a firearms incident the previous day, but they weren't given Mr Kaba's name, as the car did not belong to him.

A statement read out in the court said that the officer who discharged the firearm has been told they are under criminal investigation for the offence of the murder of Mr Kaba.

Mr Kaba, 24, was a construction worker, and he was months away from becoming a father when he died.

The inquest was opened and adjourned and will resume after the IOPC investigation is completed.

Thieves steal £275,000 in cash and gold from East London Islamic pilgrimage business

Thieves walked out of an East London pilgrimage business with over a quarter of a million pounds by removing a whole safe. The crooks made off from Labbaik Travel and Excursions on Ben Jonson Road, Stepney, with £25,000 in cash, and a safe holding £200,000 plus another £50,000 in gold on Saturday night (November 18).

MyLondon understands the burglars broke through the steel shutters and three doors before disabling the CCTV and alarm system. They then located the key to a smaller safe and grabbed £25,000 in cash before moving on to a bigger prize.

Despite needing eight people to lift, the thieves were able to remove a second safe containing a load more money and around 50 Bhori (a weight measurement of gold in South Asian countries) of the owner's wife's jewellery worth between £50-100,000. The total loss for the small business comes to around £275,000.

The Tower Hamlets based company specialises in Islamic pilgrimages to the holy city of Mecca in Saudia Arabia where around 12,000 British Muslims travel every year on the annual Haaj. Sources close to the business owner say any money owed to customers will be repaid to them by the end of the week.

A Met Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at approximately 08:45hrs on Sunday, 20 November to reports of a burglary at a business premises in Ben Jonson Road, E1. Items, including cash, had been stolen. No arrests; enquiries into the circumstances continue."

A builder has been found guilty of murdering two women he met on an escort website.

Mark Brown, 41, of St Leonards, East Sussex, killed Alexandra Morgan and Leah Ware, who went missing six months apart in 2021.

He once predicted to his boss that he was "going down" for at least 25 years, his trial at Hove Crown Court was told.

Brown, who has never revealed what happened to Ms Ware, will be sentenced on 13 January.

Judge Mr Justice Nicholas Hilliard said: "This is clearly a case of the utmost gravity and the effect on the victims' families must be absolutely devastating."

He said Brown will be sentenced to life in prison and he will have to decide the minimum prison term or "indeed consider if he will ever be released for parole licence".

Ms Ware's remains have never been found. Brown, a father of one who had a long-term partner, has always maintained that he does not know where she is - and that she is still alive.

But the judge told the court if Brown wishes to confirm what he has done with her body, that will be something he will take into consideration between now and sentencing.

Brown had claimed Ms Morgan - known by her friends and family as Alex and a single mother of two - had slipped and fallen on a tool or piece of mechanical equipment in a workshop he rented at Little Bridge Farm, near Hastings, hitting her head.

He told the court there was "a lot of blood", and he was convinced she had died.

'It happened again'

Brown, of Squirrel Close, later admitted to disposing of her body "in a panic" to cover the whole thing up. He put her body in an incinerator made from an oil drum.

His trial heard a message he sent which the prosecution said referred to the process he used to dispose of the women's remains.

"I'm going to be very careful how I word this," the message said.

"It happened again, not very long ago when disposing of something."

"It's a very unpleasant thing to do - an old oil drum, five litres of diesel, and hey presto, there's not very much left."

Brown was working at a building site in Sevenoaks when he was questioned by Kent Police after Miss Morgan disappeared in November 2021.

He told his boss Alan Downs that he expected to be arrested.

Brown also sent a message to a friend which said: "The things I have done weigh heavily on my heart, on my head and my soul. A psychopath with a conscience - it's a joke really."

Police decided they wanted to speak to Ms Ware about Ms Morgan, having discovered Ms Ware had been in a relationship with Brown. It was then they discovered she had not been seen since May 2021.

While searching Brown's van, Kent Police officers found prescription drugs in Ms Ware's name.

She had also met Brown through her escort work, but had moved to Little Bridge Farm after being in a relationship with him for about three years.

Tamsin Gregory, a friend of Ms Ware said she had "concerns" about Brown's relationship with her.

"It seemed like he was very controlling of her," she said.

Ms Ware lived at the farm with her two dogs, Duke and Lady, to whom she was devoted.

Brown killed her on or around 7 May 2021 after tensions grew when she pressed him to leave his partner of 14 years, the jury was told.

In the days immediately after the prosecution say she died, Duke was rehomed with Brown's sister. Ms Ware's family said she would never have agreed to this. Lady, a Pomeranian, has not been seen since.

However, during a police search of the farm, the skeletal remains of a Pomeranian were found in a pond on the site, at the end of a collar and lead tied to a weight. The prosecution argued that these were Lady's bones.

Brown admitted giving differing accounts to different people about Ms Ware's disappearance, saying she had been "sectioned", sent to "a mental hospital" or had "killed herself" and was "at peace".

The prosecution argued that he had killed her, and disposed of her body in an oil drum.

Ms Morgan was last seen at a petrol station with her Mini Cooper near Cranbrook on 14 November.

Following a public appeal, Kent Police found her car and Ms Morgan's remains.

UK Man Killed Colleague By Cutting Her Throat 14 Times "To Make Sure She Was Dead"

A lab technician has been convicted for killing his colleague at his parents' home in Leicestershire in England, according to a report in The Guardian. Ross McCullam strangled and stabbed Meghan Newborough weeks after they began a relationship last year. The 30-year-old was found guilty of the murder of Ms Newborough, 23, by the Leicester Crown Court on Monday after a six-week trial. The man nodded twice as the verdict was read out, The Guardian report further said.

McCullam had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but had claimed he could not be guilty of murdering Ms Newborough as he lost control triggered by the victim.

McCullam had told the court that the fatal incident took place when Ms Newborough prepared to give him oral sex. The 30-year-old claimed he went into a "blind rage" after remembering sexual abuse from his childhood, which triggered a moment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the outlet said in its report.

But the court refused to accept McCullam's argument, and he was convicted in just over an hour and a half. The court took note of his statement given to the police, in which McCullam said he strangled Ms Newborough and cut her throat 14 times "to make sure Megan was dead", according to Sky News.

McCullam waited for 10 minutes before fetching a knife and later dumper the woman's body in a country lane, according to his police statement.

Ms Newborough's mother, father and sister cried and hugged each other at the back of the court as McCullam was convicted, the Sky News report further said.

The family said in a statement that their lives have "well and truly been ripped apart" after the verdict.

Brixton Academy: Two people dead after human crush at music gig

A second woman has died after being injured in a crush at a gig at London's Brixton O2 Academy.

Gabrielle Hutchinson, 23, who was working as a security contractor that night, died in hospital in the early hours of Monday.

The concert, by Afro-pop singer Asake, was cut short on Thursday after a "large number of people" tried to force their way inside, the Met Police said.

Mother-of-two Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, from Newham, east London, died on Saturday.

A 21-year-old woman remains in a critical condition in hospital following the crush at Asake's third sold-out show at the south London venue last week.

The Met said: "At this time we have established that the three women who were critically injured, including Rebecca Ikumelo and Gabrielle Hutchinson who have tragically died, were all in the foyer of the building."

It added detectives were "working hard to establish exactly what happened on Thursday night", and described the investigation as "large and complex".

Police are reviewing CCTV, phone footage, speaking to witnesses and conducting forensic examinations.

The first officers were reported to be on the scene at 21:11 GMT, seven minutes after they were called.

Videos on social media showed the crowd stretching from the road outside to the venue's doors, one of which was smashed.

Ch Supt Colin Wingrove, policing commander for Lambeth and Southwark, said: "It is devastating news that a second person has lost their life following the events on Thursday.

"I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to Gabrielle's family at this unimaginably difficult time."

The O2 Academy tweeted its "heartfelt condolences" to Ms Hutchinson's family and friends.

"We continue to be devastated by this tragic situation and are fully supporting the ongoing situation," it said.

Florence Eshalomi, the MP for Vauxhall whose constituency includes Brixton, said she felt "utterly heartbroken" by the deaths of the two women.

London's mayor Sadiq Khan said he was "devastated".

He said: "Gabrielle, like Rebecca Ikumelo, had her whole life ahead of her and had every right to come home safe and well after her shift, working at Brixton Academy."

Ms Ikumelo was a nursing graduate who had been attending the concert.

Her cousin Babatunde Oyejide told the BBC she was a "true, special person" and encouraged people to send prayers to Ms Ikumelo's partner and children.

He said: "She was a very loved person in the neighbourhood and a very caring person, family orientated. She is going to be truly missed and we love her forever."

Asake, who had urged fans without tickets not to turn up at the venue before his first Brixton concert, released a statement following Ms Ikumelo's death in which he said he was "devastated".

"I am overwhelmed with grief and could never have imagined anything like this happening," he wrote.

<b>Killamarsh murders: Damien Bendall given whole-life order</b>

A man who murdered his pregnant partner, her two children, and another child has been sentenced to a whole-life prison term.

Damien Bendall killed his four victims with a claw hammer at a house in Derbyshire in 2021.

He pleaded guilty to murdering Terri Harris, 35, her son John Bennett, 13, daughter Lacey Bennett, 11, and Lacey's 11-year-old friend Connie Gent.

He also pleaded guilty to raping Lacey.
Bendall, 32, admitted the charges at Derby Crown Court on Wednesday, where he was sentenced by Mr Justice Sweeney.

He was given a whole-life order, meaning he will never be released from prison, except in exceptional compassionate circumstances.

Mr Justice Sweeney told him: "As the prosecution have said, you carried out vicious, brutal and cruel attacks on a defenceless woman and three young children, during which you went around the house attacking them."

Ms Harris and the children were found dead at a house in Chandos Crescent, Killamarsh, on 19 September, having been killed on the evening of 18 September.

"The defendant attacked them using a claw hammer which he used to hit them over the head and on the upper body," prosecution barrister Louis Mably KC told the court.

"It was perfectly clear none of the victims stood a chance."

Mr Mably told the court Bendall and Ms Harris had been in a relationship, having met on a dating app after her relationship with her children's father ended.

Police arrived at the house on the morning of 19 September, having been alerted by Bendall's mother, as he told her he had stabbed himself.

In police bodycam footage played to the court, he could be seen speaking to officers outside the house, telling them calmly, "I've murdered four people", and "I'm going back to prison".

Police initially did not believe him, Mr Mably said, but an officer found all four bodies when he went inside.

He found John first, lying naked on the floor of the bathroom, as he had been due to have a shower before Bendall attacked him.

He then found Ms Harris and her daughter in the main bedroom. Terri was on the floor but Lacey was on the bed.

Forensic evidence indicates that Bendall attacked and raped Lacey downstairs before moving her upstairs, where he raped her again.

He also used some kind of ligature around her neck, and this contributed to her death along with the head injuries.

Connie, who was stopping with Lacey for a sleepover that night, was found dead in another bedroom.

Bendall, who the court heard was under the influence of cocaine and cannabis, left the house after the murders, taking John's games console with him in order to sell it for drugs.

He was arrested and taken to hospital, but the wounds he had inflicted on himself only required stitches.

He was then interviewed by police, telling them: "I used a hammer. I did not realise what I did until I walked into my room and saw my missus and my daughter."

He knew Ms Harris was pregnant when he killed her, because he also told police: "Bet you don't usually get four murders in Killamarsh do you? Well I mean five 'cause my missus was having a baby."

Victim personal statements from relatives of the victims were read to the court by the prosecution.

Angela Smith, Ms Harris's mother, said: "Terri, Lacey and John meant the world to me and were the most precious people in my life. Not being able to give them a kiss and a hug and tell them I love them breaks my heart."

She recalled her grandchildren telling her they were scared of monsters when they were younger.

"I told them there's no such thing as monsters, but how wrong I was," she said.

Jason Bennett, John and Lacey's father, said their murders had "destroyed and taken my life away".

"I am living in a continual nightmare," his statement said.

"I have a story in my head of how they died, I live their trauma and feel their pain; it feels like a recurring punishment."

He recalled how Lacey and Connie had been selling sweets for charity on the day they died, describing his daughter as "kind and caring".

"John would not hurt a fly, literally. If he saw an insect he would carefully put it outside," he said.

Charles Gent, Connie's father, said his daughter's murder had "completely torn my life apart".

"The man who carried out the crimes can only be described as truly evil and should never be free from incarceration, just like the families of the victims in this case will never be free from their life sentence as a result of the shocking and abhorrent crimes he committed on a defenceless woman and children," he said.

During the sentencing hearing the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) made representations that the whole-life tariff was necessary.

This was agreed by Bendall's defence barrister, and Bendall himself.

Defence barrister Vanessa Marshall KC said: "His instructions are clear that nothing but a whole-life order is warranted for taking, as he did, these four young lives away, and in such awful circumstances."

Bendall previously pleaded guilty to four counts of manslaughter but denied murder and rape, meaning he was due to stand trial for these offences before he changed his pleas.

"Bendall's defence put forward theories that his judgement was psychologically impaired," said Andrew Baxter, deputy chief crown prosecutor.

"Throughout the process, the CPS instructed its own medical experts to assess whether the arguments had merit, which they did not.

"When all medical angles had been exhausted, the evidence that he had murdered all four victims with no impairment to his actions was overwhelming and Bendall admitted all charges."

<b>Brixton Academy: Concert crush venue licence under review</b>

The Met has applied for a summary review of the premises licence for the Brixton O2 Academy after two people died when they were crushed at a gig.

The concert by Afro-pop singer Asake was cut short when a large number of people tried to enter the venue on 15 December.

Rebecca Ikumelo died in hospital the following Saturday, and Gaby Hutchinson passed away two days later.

A third person remains in a critical condition.

Notifications of the review have been posted outside the venue.

A summary review is a fast-track review process brought by the police when they consider that the premises concerned is involved in serious crime, serious disorder or both.

It allows the licensing authority to take interim steps where it considers it necessary, pending a full review.

Those steps include the modification of the conditions of the premises licence; the exclusion of a licensable activity from the scope of the licence; the removal of the designated premises supervisor from the licence; the suspension of the licence for a period not exceeding 3 months; and the revocation of the licence.

Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley told the BBC earlier a team of detectives was investigating the fatal crush to determine "if there are any criminal liabilities involved".

A statement on the Lambeth Council website said: "We are shocked and saddened by the devastating incident in Brixton on Thursday night, and are working to support our communities in the wake of this tragedy.

"The council is also fully playing its role in the investigations that are now under way. We are determined that answers must be found as to why these awful events occurred.

"The venue is currently closed and we are set to undertake an urgent, in-depth review of its licence, which covers the legal conditions it must meet to run, including its public safety arrangements.

This follows the Met Police submitting an application for a 'Summary License Review' on Tuesday."

The council's licensing sub-committee will meet on 22 December to consider any immediate measures that need taking in relation to the venue.

The Met and the Academy Group, which runs the venue, have both been approached for any further comment.

<b>Wallasey pub shooting: Third arrest over Christmas Eve attack</b>

A third person has been arrested over the Christmas Eve pub shooting that killed Elle Edwards and injured four men.

Merseyside Police said the 26-year-old was not thought to have been the target when she was shot outside The Lighthouse in Wallasey.

A man, 28, was critically hurt and three others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A Tranmere man, aged 31, has been held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

Another Tranmere man, aged 30, who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, and a 19-year-old woman from Rock Ferry, who was held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, remain in police custody.

Officers have been granted more time to question the pair.

Ms Edwards died after several shots were fired at the entrance to the Lighthouse at about 23:50 GMT on Christmas Eve.

Police said the pub was packed with mainly young people at the time.

On Wednesday, Deputy Chief Constable Ian Critchley said Ms Edwards' death had been "the most appalling and callous murder".

He said Merseyside Police "will not rest until we bring the offenders to justice".

"By that, I mean the person who pulled the trigger of the gun in the most indiscriminate way [and] anybody who was responsible for arranging, facilitating or harbouring this individual and anybody who continues to withhold information on who has done this or indeed where the weapon is," he said.

He said the force would be "tireless in our approach to find justice for Elle and her family" and added that officers had already "made great strides forward" in the investigation, thanks in part to the public providing "some tremendous intelligence and community support".

A police representative said the Lighthouse pub remained closed, but the adjacent road was now open in both directions.

Tributes have been left outside the pub, including flowers from her sister and her parents.

The man, 31, from Tranmere, had been held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder but has now been released pending further inquiries.

Two other people have also been held over her death but no-one has been charged.

Ms Edwards, 26, was shot a week ago outside The Lighthouse in Wallasey, Wirral.

Up to 20 members of her family attended prayers for her at a Catholic Church on Saturday.

<b>Three people have died after a fire broke out at a Perth hotel</b>

Emergency services including 21 ambulance crews, 60 firefighters and nine fire trucks were called to the New County Hotel on County Place at about 05:10.

Hotel guests and two people from neighbouring flats were evacuated and police set up a cordon, urging members of the public to avoid the area.

Eleven people were treated at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

The fire was extinguished at about 06:30 and the bodies were discovered in a subsequent search.

Just before midday, police began removing them from blue tents close to the hotel into a private ambulance.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said a dog also died in the fatal blaze.

Jason Sharp, the area's senior fire officer, said firefighters had worked hard to rescue a number of casualties from the building before transferring them into the care of paramedics.

Police Scotland said officers were conducting a joint investigation with the fire service.

I really do not think London is safe!

The Metropolitan police commissioner has described London as a “fantastically safe” city as the force announced a drop in homicide rates last year.

Sir Mark Rowley said the capital was a place to “live, work and enjoy yourself” as he visited a boxing gym in Ilford, east London, on Thursday.

Alongside the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, the commissioner met the Box Up Crime founder, Stephen Addison, who set up the club to provide vulnerable young people with a community and a path away from crime.

It came as the force promised it was cracking down on offences targeting youngsters, releasing figures that showed the number of teenage killings halved in 2022.

Rowley said: “London is a fantastically safe global city. Of course no city’s perfect, but if you look at crime rates … it’s a safe place to live and work and enjoy yourself.”

A British investor said to have lost £1m in the collapse of cryptocurrency trading platform FTX is among 13 people to have made fraud reports to UK police.

FTX filed for bankruptcy on 11 November after it was alleged the then chief executive Sam Bankman-Fried, 30, had illegally diverted massive sums of customer money from the company to a second firm he owned, Alameda Research.

According to a Freedom of Information request made on behalf of the Investing Reviews website, 13 people made reports to Action Fraud in November.

Action Fraud is the UK's national reporting centre for alleged fraud.

The total loss reported was £1.16m, with the biggest individual loss £1m.

Simon Jones, chief executive of InvestingReviews.co.uk, said: "The bad news is that the British investor who lost £1m is unlikely to ever see a penny of their money again.

"The Financial Conduct Authority has been at pains to warn investors about the dangers of cryptocurrency, so if you're tempted, make sure you don't put all your eggs in one basket."

City of London Police said it has passed details of the reports to the US authorities.

Bankman-Fried denies criminal charges linked to the collapse of FTX and is due to face trial in the US in October.

A seven-year-old girl and three women have been taken to hospital after a shooting outside a funeral near Euston station in central London.

The Metropolitan Police said three women - aged 48, 54, and 41 - were taken to hospital after the incident on Phoenix Road.

Witnesses have described how a suspected drive-by shooting which left a seven-year-old girl fighting for her life in hospital sent people running and screaming near a memorial service for a young woman who died from cancer.

There were scenes of panic outside St Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Euston, central London, on Saturday afternoon as gunfire rang out, leaving several people seriously injured.

Two girls, one aged seven and another aged 12, and four women, aged 54, 48, 41, and 21, were taken to hospital following the incident at around 1.30pm.

It happened just as a requiem mass for 20-year-old Sara Sanchez and her mother Fresia Calderon, who died within a month of one another in November, took place inside the church in Phoenix Road.

An online fundraiser to support Ms Sanchez's battle with leukaemia raised more than £31,000.

Met Police reviewing over 1,600 cases of alleged sexual offences and domestic abuse involving its staff
The cases are being scrutinised after a serving Metropolitan Police officer turned out to be one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders.

The Metropolitan Police is reviewing more than 1,600 cases of alleged sexual offences or domestic violence involving its own officers and staff.

It comes a serving officer turned out to be one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders.

PC David Carrick - who was known to his colleagues as "B*****d Dave" - admitted dozens of rapes and sexual offences following attacks on 12 women.

He admitted 49 charges - including 24 rape counts - for crimes committed over an 18-year period.

The Met Police has now said a total of 1,633 cases involving 1,071 officers and staff are set to be reviewed.

The force said that accusations ranging from arguments to the most serious sexual crimes from the last 10 years are being checked to make sure that the appropriate decisions were made.

Serial Rapist Was London Cop, Admits To 24 Counts Of Rape

A British police officer who admitted being a serial rapist was formally sacked on Tuesday, as the government called on forces across the country to root out the criminal and corrupt in their ranks.

David Carrick's guilty plea to 24 counts of rape against 12 women and a string of other sex offences over two decades has caused widespread shock, undermining public faith in the police.

It has also piled pressure on his force, the Metropolitan Police in London, that is already reeling from the kidnap, rape and murder of a young women by another of its officers two years ago.

A day after Carrick's admission, Met Assistant Commissioner Louisa Rolfe said his case was "sickening and horrific" and had "far-reaching consequences" for policing.

"I truly hope to never see its like again," she told an internal disciplinary hearing.

Carrick, 48, had been suspended from his job in an armed unit protecting MPs and foreign diplomats since the allegations came to light in late 2021.

Police misconduct hearings are typically held after the conclusion of criminal proceedings against an officer.

But Carrick's was fast-tracked after his guilty pleas and, unusually, opened to the media given the unprecedented nature of his crimes.

Lawyer Hywel Jenkins, representing Met Police Commissioner Mark Rowley, called Carrick's crimes "heinous, targeted and deliberate".

They have had a "catastrophic" impact on his victims and their families, while also undermining confidence in the police service, he added.

"The public of Greater London expect police officers to uphold the law and protect women from violence," said Ms Rolfe.

"PC (police constable) Carrick did the opposite."

Carrick, a former soldier who did not attend the hearing and had no legal representation, was sacked for gross misconduct.

He will be sentenced in court over two days from February 6.

Public trust

Public trust in the Met had already suffered from the conviction of Wayne Couzens, who served in the same unit as Carrick, for killing Sarah Everard as she walked home in south London in March 2021.

Couzens, who is serving a whole-life sentence, falsely claimed she had broken coronavirus lockdown rules to snatch her off the streets.

But in both cases, police vetting procedures that could have identified their offending earlier were found wanting.

No action was taken either against Couzens over allegations in 2015 that he exposed himself or Carrick, who had a string of claims against him.

Two official reports into the Met and other forces in England and Wales concluded background checks were lax and there was a culture of impunity.

Since starting as Britain's most senior police officer last September, Rowley has pledged to "go after the racists and misogynists who are undermining us".

That has led to a wave of disciplinary action against officers, and in some cases criminal proceedings for misconduct in a public office.

More than 1,600 claims of sex offences and domestic violence against just over 1,000 Met Police officers and staff are currently under review.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman, whose brief includes policing, called Carrick's crimes "a dark day for policing and the Metropolitan Police".

"For anyone to have gone through such torment is harrowing but for it to happen at the hands of someone they entrusted to keep people safe is almost beyond comprehension," she told MPs.

How criminality can be stamped out of police forces was the subject of a government-commissioned review, she said.

Ms Braverman met Ms Rowley on Monday and said she was "encouraged" by the action taken by the Met so far to root out corrupt officers not fit to serve, to restore public trust.

But she said it was vital for the Met and other forces to redouble their efforts. "This may mean more shocking cases come to light in the short term," she added.

Head of Epsom College found dead at school alongside husband and daughter
Emma Pattison and family found at prestigious Surrey independent school early on Sunday morning

The headteacher of a prestigious private school in Surrey has been found dead alongside her husband and daughter.

Emma Pattison, the head of Epsom College, was found at the school along with her husband, George, 39, and seven-year-old Lettie on Sunday morning.

The 45-year-old had only joined the school this academic year in September. She had previously been head at Croydon High school for six years. Epsom College was awarded “Independent School of the Year” in October 2022.

An investigation is under way, but Surrey police said that they believed it was an isolated incident and that there is no third-party involvement. They were called to the £42,000-a-year school at 1am on Sunday.

Dr Alastair Wells, chair of the board of governors at Epsom College, said, “On behalf of everyone at Epsom College, I want to convey our utter shock and disbelief at this tragic news.

“Our immediate thoughts and condolences are with Emma’s family, friends and loved ones, and to the many pupils and colleagues whose lives she enriched throughout her distinguished career.

“Emma was a wonderful teacher, but most of all she was a delightful person. In time we will commemorate Emma and her family, in the appropriate way, and in line with the wishes of her family.

“But for now, we ask that we are all given the time, space and respect we need to come to terms with this tragic loss.”

An email to parents from Dr Wells said that counsellors would be available to staff and students for support.

London Cop To Serve Life Sentence For 71 Sexual Offences

A UK judge on Tuesday sentenced a former policeman to life in jail, with a minimum term of 30 years, for dozens of rapes and sexual assaults in the latest case to shame London's Metropolitan Police force.

Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb handed David Carrick 36 life sentences for a "monstrous" string of 71 sexual offences against 12 women.

She said Carrick, whose crimes included 48 rapes, represented a "grave danger to women" which would "last indefinitely".

Carrick, 48, a long-serving officer, will serve three decades behind bars before he can be considered for parole.

The case comes as the Met has vowed to end a culture of misogyny and lax vetting highlighted by the rape and murder of a young woman who was snatched off the street by a serving police officer in March 2021.

Anger and distrust towards the police has mounted since the murder of Londoner Sarah Everard during the pandemic by Wayne Couzens who has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in jail.

Carrick and Couzens served in the same armed unit protecting MPs and foreign diplomats.

Cheema-Grubb said Carrick had "brazenly raped and sexually assaulted" his victims, believing himself to be "untouchable" due to his position which afforded him "exceptional powers to coerce and control".

Only a sentence of life imprisonment could reflect "the gravity" of his crimes, she added.

Since the crimes of Carrick and Couzens were uncovered, a string of other cases involving police officers have also come to light.

Earlier, prosecutor Tom Little told the court how Carrick used his status as a police officer to initially reassure women and begin relationships, before subjecting them to "a catalogue of violent and brutal sexual offences".

He told the court on Monday that Carrick "frequently relied on his charm to beguile and mislead the victims... and would then use his power and control, in part because of what he did for a living, to stop them leaving or consider reporting him".

Carrick often humiliated the women, including locking them naked in a small cupboard, urinating on them and whipping them.

In statements read out by the prosecutor in court, his victims said they felt "trapped" by him and "don't trust the police any more".

The police had records of multiple complaints and allegations involving Carrick's behaviour but he never faced a disciplinary hearing.

'Must do better'

Carrick was sacked from the police only last month after pleading guilty in court.

Interior Minister Suella Braverman said Monday that it was "clear that policing must do better".

Ms Braverman said she had asked police forces to strengthen vetting, adding that "standards need to rise so that cases like these... become a thing of the past".

The Met, Britain's biggest force, has apologised for failing to act on the prior allegations levelled against Carrick.

The force's Assistant Commissioner Barbara Gray said ahead of the sentencing that "we failed to identify a man in the ranks... who carried out the most awful offences".

"He should not have been a police officer," she added.

The force admitted last month that on average two to three officers faced criminal charges in court every week.

The Met has responded to Carrick's case by setting up an investigative team to target staff suspected of domestic abuse or sexual offences.

It is reviewing all current officers and staff who have faced such allegations that did not result in charges or misconduct hearings.

Met police found to be institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic
Author of landmark report says Met can ‘no longer presume that it has the permission of the people of London to police them’

The Metropolitan police is broken and rotten, suffering collapsing public trust and is guilty of institutional racism, misogyny and homophobia, an official report has said.

The report by Louise Casey, commissioned by the Met after one of its officers abducted Sarah Everard, taking her from from a London street in March 2021, before raping and murdering her, is one of the most damning of a major British institution .

The 363-page report details disturbing stories of sexual assaults, usually covered up or downplayed, with 12% of women in the Met saying they had been harassed or attacked at work, and one-third experiencing sexism.

Lady Casey said that the lifeblood of British policing was haemorrhaging and her report warned that “public consent is broken” with just 50% of the public expressing confidence, even before revelations about the force’s worst recent scandals.

She pinned the primary blame on its past leadership and said: “Public respect has fallen to a low point. Londoners who do not have confidence in the Met outnumber those who do, and these measures have been lower amongst black Londoners for years.

“The Met has yet to free itself of institutional racism. Public consent is broken. The Met has become unanchored from the Peelian principle of policing by consent set out when it was established.”

The report found a bullying culture, frontline officers demoralised and feeling let down by their leaders, and discrimination “baked into the system”.

A few moments ago, Thomas Cashman was handed a minimum of 42 years in prison over the murder of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel.

The judge sentenced him on five counts:

Count one: For the murder of Olivia - the sentence will be life imprisonment. The minimum term will be 42 years

Count two: The attempted murder of Joseph Nee, the intended target of the attack. The sentence is life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years

Count three: For wounding Olivia's mother Cheryl Korbel, the sentence is 10 years imprisonment

Count four and five: The firearms offences - the sentence is 18 years imprisonment.

All sentences are to be served concurrently, which means the shortest period Cashman can serve before he can be considered for early release is 42 years, less the 182 days he served on remand.

Agree bro, ive advised my family to keep in a safe in a bank. They will only be at more risk as Gold is set to rise and rise high.

There was an incident near me, where a English girl was used to speak in an Asian accent, asking for help. When the door opened, some men entered in a violent fashion and looked for Gold.

Security is also important, a good CCTV camera, secure doors etc. I personally would get a guard dog but for some reasons Asians are a little scared of keeping dogs here in the UK.

Date and time set for UK's first nationwide test of emergency alert system
The test will coincide with the London Marathon and several Premier League games, but officials said any potential intrusion will be worth it to make sure you recognise what real future alerts would look like.

A nationwide test of the UK's emergency alert service will take place at 3pm on Sunday 23 April.

It will see messages pop up on mobile phones across the country, along with a sound and vibration that will stop automatically after 10 seconds.

People will just need to tap "OK" or swipe away the notification like any other, with no further action required.

It's the first nationwide trial of the service, following pilots in East Suffolk and Reading.

The government said it would be used in "life-threatening emergencies", including extreme weather events like the wildfires and flooding seen last year.

Similar services are already being used in countries like the US, Canada, and Japan.

Minister Oliver Dowden said the alert could one day "be the sound that saves your life".

A man has been arrested after a car crashed into the gates outside Downing Street, Met police said.

The force said he had been arrested by armed officers on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving.

There were no reports of any injuries and inquiries are ongoing, the police said.

Whitehall - the main road running past Downing Street - has been closed by police.

The incident happened at 16:20 BST, police said.

The silver hatchback car was visible outside the black iron gates at the entrance to the street where the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his family live.

Abusinessman who ran a ponzi-style investment scam from a City of London office worth in excess of £70m was found guilty today following a seven week trial.

Operating between 2013 and 2015, Anthony Constantinou ran Capital World Markets, which promised returns of five per cent a month to investors, who were asked to stump up between £50,000 and £100,000, City of London police said.

But the money was not being invested in foreign exchange and the returns were instead being paid back to them from their own and others’ invested capital, police said.

The investigation also found “extravagant spending” of clients’ funds, the police said, including £3m spent by Constantinou, 41, on events, including his wedding and a CWM launch party.

He was found guilty by a jury on seven counts of fraud by false representation, fraudulent trading and money laundering at Southwark Crown Court.

Constantinou, however, did not attend the later stages of his trial and an international arrest warrant has been issued to locate him.

Constantinou is due to be sentenced in absentia on June 9.

“This has been a long-running and complex investigation. Anthony Constantinou is a career criminal who is out to make as much money for himself as possible, with no regard for anyone else,” Detective Inspector Nichola Meghji, from the City of London Police, said.

“Throughout this lengthy investigation, Constantinou has continued to try to deceive officers and deny any wrongdoing. In a further move to deny any involvement in this case, he decided to stop attending his trial,” Meghji added.

Nottingham attack suspect named locally as graduate from same university as London victim

The suspect accused of killing three people, including two students, during a rampage earlier this week in Nottingham has been named locally. The 31-year-old attacker is believed to be Valdo Amissão Mendes Calocane, who graduated from the University of Nottingham back in 2022.

A video emerged from the scene of the attack shows a man being detained by police on the street next to a white van, The Mirror reported. Witnesses described how the man was 'tasered by police' before being arrested.

University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar, both 19, were stabbed to death around 4am on Ilkeston Road - just a few minutes from their university halls. Ian Coates, a primary school caretaker in his 60s, was also found dead with knife wounds near Mapperley Park, Nottingham, sometime after 5am.

an had his van stolen and was fatally attacked just under two miles away from where the students were found. His van was then driven into three people waiting at a bus stop on Milton Street in Nottingham’s city centre at around 5.30am on Tuesday.

One of those hit by the van remains in a critical condition in hospital, while the other two suffered only minor injuries. The suspect was then arrested on Maples Street soon after the incident.

A child is in a serious condition and three adults have been injured after being shot near a restaurant in east London.

Police were called to Kingsland High Street, in Dalston in Hackney, at about 21:20 BST on Wednesday, after reports of gunshots.

Officers, including firearms specialists, and the London ambulance service attended the scene, the Metropolitan Police said.

The four victims were found with gunshot injuries and were taken to hospital in east London, the Met added.

The force said the child remained in a serious condition and that it was awaiting further details of the other victims' conditions.

No arrests have been made and an investigation into circumstances around the incident has begun.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Ward said Londoners would "be shocked" by the incident.

"Our thoughts go to all those affected," he added.

"Fast moving inquiries are under way and we will update as soon as we can. If anyone has any information, please contact us."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said it had treated the three adults and the child at the scene before taking them to a major trauma centre.

Passer-by Ayo Adesina told the BBC: "I arrived maybe about four, five, six minutes after it happened.

"People were just silent, like someone was trying to help... people just seemed stunned and trying to work out what was happening."

He said Kingsland High Street was a popular area and it was "very reckless for someone to have done".

Another resident, Dave Evans, who heard gunshots while walking his dog, said that it was "part of living in Hackney".

"If I had arrived five minutes earlier, who knows what would have happened, it's not good for the community."

Caroline Woodley, mayor of Hackney, said: “This was a shocking attack, and my thoughts are with those affected and their families.

“I understand the deep concern that will be felt across Dalston, and we will be here to support the community as more details emerge.

“We are now closely supporting the police’s investigation. This incident took place in a busy part of our borough and I would urge anyone with any information to come forward.”

Woman dies after triple shooting in London as police launch murder probe

A murder investigation has been launched after a woman was killed and a man was left in a critical condition following a triple shooting in north-west London.

Describing the incident as a “heinous act of violence”, the Metropolitan Police said officers were called at around 9.15pm on Saturday night to Gifford Road in Brent.

A woman, believed to be in her 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two men, both in their 30s were also injured. One is in hospital in a critical condition while the second man’s injuries are non-life threatening.

A man, who lives near the scene of the fatal shooting, described the incident as “pandemonium”.

The local resident, who did not wish to be named, said he was inside the River of Life Elim Pentecostal Church on Gifford Road, which is behind the police cordon, on Saturday night.

“I was inside the church and someone came in and said there had been a shooting,” he said. “I looked outside and it was pandemonium.”

Another resident, who lives on Creukhorne Road, said they heard five gun shots in a row on Saturday night.

Superintendent Tony Josephs, from the North West Command Unit, which covers Brent, said: “This is a truly shocking incident and I understand the concern this will cause the local community and those across London.

“I want to reassure people that a team of experienced detectives are already working at pace to piece together the events of last night and identify whoever was responsible for this heinous act of violence.

“If you were in or around Gifford Close at the time of the shooting, or have any information about who was responsible, please get in contact with us. A family has been left devastated and we need to work together to provide them with answers.”

No arrests have been made and inquiries continue.

Seven officers were at the scene on Sunday morning and road closures remained in place, with the junction of Gifford Road and Creukhorne Road cordoned off by police.
