Just because you got knocked out last night, why are you so embarrassed to play the final game for your country? Why make such a fuss to be captain and then rest yourself for a dead rubber?

Why not send out Kohli as captain who never abandoned his side through thick and thin?

Lol@ Kohli didn’t abandon his side , I would rather blame his team selection than him abandoning this game.

Not really a matter of abandoning. India has 6 captains for their 6 teams, they have the luxury to rotate. Surprised to see KL instead of Pandya at the toss

Even remember Eion Morgan dropping himself to give the other players a chance... Non issue this...

He didn't look like someone who was in his natural state of mind vs Pak and Srl. Captaincy pressure has gotten better of him till now. A rest in a dead rubber if helps him is fine I guess.

he is giving his team an excuse, if they lose. hey me, Hardik and Yuzi didn't play.. so obviously this is our C grade team

Pressure on Rohit, pressure on Virat. BCCI shouldn't have changed captaincy, distracted both players from the more important thing...batting

Absolutely. Replacing 33 year old captain with a 35 year old when team was doing well under Kohli was one of the very few poor decisions made by BCCI in last few years. Lack of ICC trophies put extra pressure on them I believe.

Wasn’t that decided/announced ages before?

Does Rohit have a family commitment or emergency to attend?

It was.
I gave you an example, where team needed their captain as you were comparing Kohli and Rohit.
But this is not an excuse, Rohit shouldn't have bailed himself out the match.

He could have stayed on (at least for the Boxing day test match) especially seeing the enormity of the situation we were facing after 36 all out.

However, all said and done, its good he himself went away. At least we won that series against all odds.

Had he been there, we would have been surely whitewashed 0-4 such is his attitude of I, me, myself!

Its an inconsequential match. They should play their bench if possible. The intensity from Afghanistan is also missing.

Have been thoroughly dissappointed with Rohits captaincy this tournament. People kept mentioning that his captaincy was the closest thing resembling Dhonis captaincy. I didn't see it. Dhoni was always calm, collected under pressure even in 2 runs needed off 1 ball situations.

Rohit is only better than Kohli the Captain.

It is a good point by OP. You have lost the tournament so while you can rest a couple of players, you should be man enough to play the final game too and make your presence felt as you reach the end of the tournament. You shouldn't be simply like ," Oh, the tournament is done so what is my point of playing".

That is not correct in my opinion.

Rohit Sharma in his current current state should never have been India’s captain. Right now he is an overweight unfit player. How could Kohli be replaced with such an overweight?

Rohit performs well with bat . Tactically he is better than dhoni . He has formed a formidable batting unit of this indian team - all matches india played bating first , crosse 175 for sure . This is a huge change batting first

He will next fine tune the bowling . He puts faith in certain players with plan in mind . Avesh khan is an example and so is bhuvi and Arshdeep .
Next few games he would have finalised the bowling attack he wants . Note how he has brought ashwin into the picture again as a bowler who can bat and specific for certain teams .

Rohit the captain builds a team . That’s how he won ipl . Wait till he gets a settled bowling line up - my guess is
Bumrah , Shami , chahar , bhuvi , Arshdeep , pandya ,
Axar , chahal , bishnoi and ashwin/ hooda with rahul Rohit Kohli sky karthick / pant jadeja / hooda as final team combo .

Naseem Shah can and will end his career eventually. He’s lucky Amir retired. Rohit’s heart is not in it anymore.

Rohit is only good enough to captain an IPL team. And btw, even in that he is past his sell by date - MI has been languishing last couple of seasons in the IPL. He has been struggling for a while now, but his woes have been swept under the carpet due to the focus on Kohli.

The Kohli-Rohit-BCCI tussle has taken a toll on both these players - they should never have been pitted against each other. To top it all, Sharma getting Test captaincy when he has never even proved his credentials in Tests is a complete joke!

It was a completely inconsequential match. Why not use it to test out World Cup prospects instead of being selfish and hammering Afghan bowlers? You need to understand that not everyone considers this Afghan attack the second coming of Warne and Murali. Some teams just hammer them and expose them for the one-dimensional side that they are.

The Indian cricket team is currently going through an intense scrutiny after their loss to England by 10 wickets in the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup. India failed to defend a 168-run total in that match against eventual champions England on Thursday. The loss extended their wait for an ICC title by a year. India last won an ICC title in 2013 when it lifted the Champions Trophy under then skipper MS Dhoni. Under skipper Rohit Sharma, there was enough hope of a different result this time around. It was not to be.

Rohit Sharma's personal form was also not great in the tournament. Barring a half-century against Netherlands, he failed to strike big against Pakistan (4), South Africa (15), Bangladesh (2), Zimbabwe (15) and England (27).

Former India player Atul Wassan felt that it was time for a non-playing captain in T20Is.

"You are seeing two levels of cricket. You can't blame the captaincy, there is the team management too. Not one decision was taken by Rohit Sharma. Sirf Rohit Sharma ko khud kaha chupna hai field mein, woh unhone khud socha hoga (Where to hide on the field, Rohit Sharma would have taken that decision on his own). It's time that a non-playing captain does the job in T20s, just like in tennis. I think MS Dhoni should be made the non-playing captain of the Indian team," Atul Wassan, who played four Tests and nine ODIs, said on ABP Live.

Talking about the semi-final game, Hardik Pandya's 33-ball 63 guided India to 168-6, but the total proved inadequate for an inspired opening pair, as England entered the final. England captain Buttler smashed Bhuvneshwar Kumar for three boundaries in the opening over of their chase and his side never looked back.

He kept up the batting onslaught and Hales soon joined the big-hitting party as England raced to 63-0 in six overs. Hales reached his 50 off 28 balls and was severe on Axar Patel, who leaked 28 runs in his three overs as the match was torn away from India in a flurry of sixes and fours.

Hales raised the team's 100 with another six off Pandya and Buttler soon changed gears to catch up with his partner. The skipper reached his fifty with a six and a four off Pandya to douse any hopes of India attempting to end their world title drought since their 2013 Champions Trophy triumph.

India's designated skipper across all formats, Rohit Sharma, hasn't played a single T20I game since the conclusion of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Seeing the Indian team struggling in the T20Is against West Indies, questions over the absence of players like Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, etc. from the shortest format have intensified. Breaking silence over his T20I absence, Rohit admitted that it is 'not possible' for some players to play all formats, especially keeping this year's ODI World Cup in mind

"At the moment I think it was made clear in the past that it's a 50-over World Cup year for us. And for some of the guys, it's not possible to play all formats. If you look at the schedule, there were back-to-back matches, so we decided on just looking at some players' workload that we wanted to make sure that they get enough break time and manage them. I definitely fall in that (category) as well,"

'Workload management' has been an important point of discussion in the Indian cricketing spectrum for a while now. With the fitness of key players like Rohit, Kohli, Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, etc. being key to the team's ODI World Cup plans, the selectors have been keeping the seniors away from the T20I squads."

I agree with Rohit. Who cares about a pointless T20 bilateral series against WI anyway. ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup and Test cricket is where your gun players need to be available.

BCCI confirms Rohit Sharma will lead India for the Test, during India tour of South Africa in 2023-24.

I think Rohit Sharma will complete this ICC World Test Championship as captain, and he should remain the captain of white-ball cricket until the end of the ICC T20I World Cup 2024.

"What's The Need To...": BCCI Secretary Jay Shah On Rohit Sharma's Return As T20 Captain

Rohit Sharma hasn't played a T20I match since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England.

While Hardik Pandya has been a regular T20 skipper in the Indian cricket team since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final exit, BCCI secretary Jay Shah didn't want to make any comments on the much-discussed comeback of Rohit Sharma in the shortest format ahead of T20 World Cup in June-July in the Americas. Though there have been reports that Rohit will be leading the Indian team in next year's T20 World Cup, Shah said there's ample time to take a call on that matter.

"What is the need to have clarity right now? It (T20 World Cup) is starting in June. We have the IPL before that and also the series against Afghanistan," said Jay Shah on Saturday.

Shah also informed that the new NCA, constructed at BCCI's own property (currently its functional at Chinnaswamy Stadium) in Bengaluru will be functional by mid-August of 2024.

"We will launch the new National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and the new academies in Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir at the same time in mid-August. The work on Jammu and Kashmir academy has started," Shah said.

People, who come to watch Test cricket, would ideally like to see the match end on fourth or fifth day and that is one of the reason that 'Pink Ball' matches that can finish well inside three days will need a lot more public interest.

India have played two 'Pink Ball' Tests so far -- one against Bangladesh at Kolkata in 2019 and next against England at Ahmedabad in 2021. The first ended on first session of day 3 and second one in two days.

"We will have to increase the amount of interest in the public for the pink-ball Test. If you recall the Test ended in 2-3 days. Everyone wants to watch a Test match lasting 4-5 days.

"Once they get more used to it we will do more pink-ball Tests. Last time it was done in Australia, no one has done it since then. We were in talks with England, but we will do it gradually," Shah added.

Shah, during his tenure, brought about a parity in match fees of men and women national cricketers but he also understands that equal earnings will only be possible if there are more number of games.

But for that to happen, it has to be prerogative of all boards not just India, England and Australia.

"The number of matches also make a difference (that the men and the women's teams play). And for that, every cricket body has to reciprocate, me talking about this alone will not make a difference.

"The amount of cricket we — (cricket boards of England, Australia and BCCI) are playing — the others will also have to play. That is only when we will be able to increase the number of matches."
