IPL restart to be affected again

The resumption of IPL 2025 could take a hit with heavy rain forecast in Bengaluru when Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) here on May 17.

According to Accuweather, thunderstorms, sometimes heavy, are forecast for Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) website also predicted one or two spells of rain or thundershowers in the evening.

The weather played a part in the timing of the training sessions for both RCB and KKR on match eve. RCB held their practice session from 2pm to 5pm, a decision which team director Mo Bobat said was taken keeping in mind the patchy weather forecast for the evening. KKR started their training from 5pm but were done by 6.30pm.

It has been a pretty damp week in Bengaluru, with almost all parts of the city receiving adequate rainfall. It started raining around 9.30pm on Friday evening, well after the practice sessions for both teams were done, and the rain did not relent for at least the next four hours. That was the case on Thursday night as well.

If rain does force an abandonment, it will mean curtains for KKR's playoffs chances. On 11 points, with two games to go, if points are shared, KKR can only make it to a maximum 14, which will not be enough for a playoffs spot. They've already had one game washed out earlier in the season, against Punjab Kings.

RCB will still firmly stand a chance to reach the playoffs and a top two finish even with a washed out game. There was already a rain-shortened match in Bengaluru last month when the RCB-Punjab Kings (PBKS) game was reduced to 14 overs a side.

Bobat said that while the weather did influence their preparation, there's not much anyone can do if it rains on match day. It is also worth noting that the M Chinnaswamy Stadium boasts a state-of-the-art drainage system, which allows the match to resume minutes after it stops raining completely.

"When you get to game day, you can't control it," Bobat said on match eve. "So, actually you want your players to feel as clear and relaxed as possible. You trust them to make decisions in the moment, regardless of what happens.

"We don't overthink any of those things really. If the game's rain affected, it's rain affected. It's not something any of us control. So, we don't really think too much about that, but it might influence our preparation."

The rescheduling might affect more than just the odd game. Bengaluru has one more game to host, on May 23 (RCB vs Sunrisers Hyderabad), while Mumbai, which has seen unseasonal rainfall already, is scheduled to host the Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Delhi Capitals (DC) game on May 21.

The forecast four days out from the game, though, is of clear weather, even though there is rain forecast for the day before. Kolkata, originally named as the host of the qualifier 2 and final, usually sees the monsoons begin in the first week of June, and the June 3 final, if it is held at the city's Eden Gardens, could be affected.

HEAVY RAIN AT CHINNASWAMY STADIUM CURRENTLY !!

Match is likely to be washout. Damn

:kp

RR has been a very unlucky team this season. They have lost many matches in the final overs, despite playing well. They deserved to qualify, but luck just wasn’t on their side. One major issue is the absence of a quality Indian pacer.

I watched the last RR vs RCB match at the stadium. There was an RR fan sitting next to me, angrily scolding the management for letting go of Buttler . Honestly, it’s foolish to release both Buttler and Boult while retaining Hetmayer..lol. They even left Chahal.

GT, RCB and PBKS book their places in IPL 2025 playoffs.

Just one playoff spot available, with DC, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in contention for it.

i just "saw" Rohit Vs Kohli in the final of IPL... yeah it was a short nap while working at home... but still i saw it...lol

No idea if it was a dream or... a glimpse of the future :dw

Are these three also the top 3 of new India Test lineup?
I think sai more or less brought him up a spot in top 3/4.kl will also be there in top 4 apart from jaiswal rest 3 will settle anywhere in top 4.i hope sai comes good in eng .we need him at 3 in odis. Him and jaiswal success will put more pressure and responsibility for kohli, rohit in odis .

Dunno about Sai in red ball or domestic records...he any good in Ranji Trophy/Duleep etc?
He was tagged by aswin to achieve greatness. Sai started playing cricket seriously at 18 and he simply reached to indian seniors team level in 4 years.he played for Surrey past 2 or 3 years and scored centuries from 1 to 7 at all places in test matches. He is quite good technically against both spin and pace.

IPL 2025: Digvesh Rathi SUSPENDED After Ugly Send-Off To Abhishek Sharma

Yet again, Digvesh Singh Rathi is in the news, and not for the first time, for all the wrong reasons. The BCCI has fined the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct, with a 50% fine, on May 20 (Tuesday), and will be suspended for their next clash against Gujarat Titans, on May 22 (Thursday).

The incident occurred during LSG's loss against SRH, where the mystery spinner was seen verbally sending off Abhishek Sharma before doing his 'notebook celebration', which sparked a tiff between the two. Eventually, the umpires also were involved as they had to separate the duo, in a nasty incident.

It was Rathi’s third Level 1 offence, and the mystery spinner has already accumulated two demerit points after his three demerit points that he accumulated earlier this IPL season. With five demerit points, the spinner will now be suspended for LSG’s clash against GT in Ahmedabad.

“As he now has Five Demerit Points this season - which result in a one-game suspension - Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG’s next game - against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025 in Ahmedabad,” IPL’s press release said.

SRH’s Abhishek Sharma, too, has been fined 25% of his match fees for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct. Since it was Sharma’s first such instance, he has been given one demerit point.

Jonny Bairstow is set to replace Will Jacks at Mumbai Indians for the IPL play-offs as Jacks returns to England for the ODI series against West Indies. The IPL's rescheduling due to political tensions caused a clash with England’s fixtures.

Mumbai Indians also brought in Richard Gleeson and Charith Asalanka to replace departing South African players. Bairstow’s move means he will miss Yorkshire’s upcoming County Championship and Vitality Blast matches, but the club supports his IPL opportunity.

RCB-SRH moved to Lucknow; IPL playoffs in Mullanpur and Ahmedabad

The IPL has relocated Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) final home fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), on May 23, from Bengaluru to Lucknow due to adverse weather conditions in South India. As a result, RCB will now play their last two matches - against SRH and their final fixture against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 27 - at the Ekana Stadium.

SRH, who were scheduled to fly to Bengaluru on Tuesday evening, have been advised to stay put in Lucknow, where they had played against LSG on May 19. The late change has been necessitated due to a yellow alert issued by the meteorological department in Bengaluru that has predicted "heavy to very heavy rainfall" in the city until Thursday.

RCB's previous home game, against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last Friday, was abandoned without a ball bowled after incessant rainfall lashed the city. Since then, RCB have stayed indoors owing to rains and thunderstorms that have ravaged all of Bengaluru and led to several parts of the city being waterlogged.

The BCCI has finalised New Chandigarh and Ahmedabad as the two venues for the four playoff games of IPL 2025, as the schedule was revised after a brief suspension earlier this month.

ESPNcricinfo has learnt that Mullanpur will host qualifier 1 on May 29 and the eliminator the next day, whereas Ahmedabad will host qualifier 2 and the final on June 1 and June 3, respectively. As per the original schedule, Hyderabad and Kolkata were slotted to host those four games at the end of this month. The change in venues was decided by the IPL Governing Council "keeping in mind the weather conditions and other parameters."

Punjab Kings (PBKS), RCB and GT have confirmed their place in the playoffs, while Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) will fight it out for the fourth spot.

Anyhow vested interest have been successful in disturbing the flow of IPL and the intensity... Not sure if they planned intentionally this way to target IPL as conspiracy theories are famous in PP (though only when anything non-Indian is the victim)

Rain has also played a supporting act with the tournament dragged into mansoon season. (RCB, Bangalore Venue, Crowd support is always a crucial factor especially if RCB is in the playoff race as in this season! MI, RCB & CSK are blockbuster teams) Venues, Dates being changed and viewers are in confusion...

Brewis is batting well this year with Chennai , CSK can make him captain next season. he will be a good choice .

Suryavanshi is something else.

India has so many dashing openers to choose from.

Vaibhav
Jaiswal
Prabhsimran
Abhishek
Priyansh

This is embarrassment of riches.

Chennai is such a boring team. Still relying on oldies to bail them out. The youngsters are mediocre.

Rajasthan Royals is a very strong team. Surprised they didn't qualify for playoffs

One of the most important match (virtual knockout) but zero discussion here! DC are knocked out of IPL 2025, Mumbai (the dangerous team) making it to playoffs.

Some insignificant matches coming up but only interest is which teams finish at Top-2 (which is important). Thankfully we have this playoff-format, if it was simple 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3 Semis, it would have been hard to tolerate these 7 matches coming up (with knockouts already decided).

Having said that, the stoppage has definitely affected the flow and interest...

Pakistanis have boycotted IPL so its ok.

I didn't enjoy some of the Delhi players and staff laughing off the defeat and being knocked out from playoffs qualification yesterday. They should be ashamed the way they crashed mid season despite topping the table after 5 matches.

Gujrat look like the team to beat.
Mumbai are showing championship pedigree
Punjab has the best batting depth and firepower by far
RCB seem destined this season

The playoffs this year will feel personal.

"Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Bologna, Newcastle... the year of breaking curses. Don’t be surprised if RCB lifts their first IPL trophy too—2025 is the year of destiny!"

Seifert named as Bethell's temporary replacement at RCB

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have signed New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert as a temporary replacement for England’s Jacob Bethell, who is leaving due to national duties. Seifert, currently playing for Karachi Kings in the PSL, will join RCB depending on how far his team progresses, with the earliest availability from May 24. If the Kings reach the PSL final on May 25, Seifert could link up with RCB by May 26, just ahead of their final league match against Lucknow Super Giants. Seifert has scored 226 runs as an opener in the ongoing PSL at a strike rate of 145.80, and he brings prior IPL experience from brief stints with Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Good wakeup call for RCB going into playoffs... Even if they lose both their last league matches they must feel well equipped for knockouts! Last year they went with a high (intensely fought match against CSK) and then got drubbed in 1st playoff...

RCB have lost their way... Too many injuries and breakage to flow (Postponement/Rain). Also I think it was too early to give captaincy to Rajat Patidar, he should have established as a player for 1-2 years. Captaincy is affecting his concentration in batting... Somebody like Krunal Pandya would have been a better choice...

Mumbai is once again looking good to lift the trophy! They just have it in them to perform and peak at the right time...

Mumbai
Punjab
GT
Bangalore

My favourites ranking for this year’s IPL trophy right now.

Except Mumbai I don't trust any other team to win chasing totals in knockouts... So teams should bat first if they win the toss, unless there is confirmed rain forecast! RCB did wrong the last night batting second...
