Russia invades Ukraine

https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-un-report-dire-situation-fighting/28912171.html

This is from 2017. There are other reports too. In the last 4 years it has worsned. Most civilians killed from 2014 until recently were from Eastern Ukraine, killed by Ukranian Nazi forces.

So after all the searching you found something from 2017. And no where does it say which civilians died. How do you know it wasnt the Russians do the killing. Russia isn't averse to killing its own citizens. Stalin killed nearly 20m including 5mn Ukrainians.

There are recent reports too. Do you do your the homework for kid at school or do you ask them to do their own research? Trying searching for recent reports but it seems you want to bury your head in the sand. So you prove to me Ukranians havent killed any civllians since 2014 or how many you believe have been killed?

That's a link to a Wikipedia. It's meaningless. Neo Nazis have always existed in Ukraine but they have also existed in Russia. Remember the fear of Monkey chanting before the 2018 WC. You need to up your game. You are getting owned by the School librarian

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_National_Unity

lol Wiki is just a reference , see their references.

These Neo Nazis are the Ukrainian National Guard. Or do you deny this?

Why should i do the searching, you made the allegation and came up with some from 2017 that had no specifics. My kids dont make an allegation and then dont reference it, they get a fail for that. Its not upto the teacher find references for them.

Eastern Europe is full of Neo Nazis and Ukraine isnt the only ones. Neo Nazis arent half as much problem as actually Nazis that invade other countries. Ukraine didnt invade Russia, Russia invaded.

Do you understand what the national guard is?

Once we establish or help you understand this , I can then help you realise how many have died as a result of these Nazis attacking Russian speakers in the Eastern part of Ukraine.

I do but do you know who is doing the invading?

IT doesnt seem you have any clue on this subject at all apart from Evil Russia , Evil Putin.

Again, just answer what is the NATIONAL GUARD?

Putin is evil, and his killing of innocent people through a horrific invasion needs to condemned. They did this in Afg, they done in Hungry, they did to Georgia. Not a single inch of Russian territory has been attacked since the 2nd WW. So your whole argument is based on some RT propaganda on their national guard. It would be funny, if it wasnt so sad.

Youre are boring me now, cant answer a simple question.

Ill explain.

The NATIONAL GUARD are specialist units directly under the control of the GOVERNMENT. The National Guard of Ukraine are NEO-NAZIS.

These same people who you are crying over wouldnt think twice about killing you and your family.

Please have the last word.... Putin is Evil.

Talking about the Far right and fascists, guess what i found. Giving money to Anti Muslim Far right candidates in France, 10mn to Le Pen as loan. I am not here to defend Any racists and nor do i care for the Ukrainian racists. I care deeply that innocent people will die and this creates more conflicts.

So Russia is invading because Ukraine has some fascists. I have heard it all.

What has Uganda got to do with this? You were comparing Russia with Italy. 15% vs 135% GDP/Debt ratio.

If you were my teacher then I would want a refund.

GDP/debt is a primary measurement of economic health. Uganda has one of the lowest GDP to Debt ratios (around 4%). USA's debt to ratio is around 107%.

There, I just copied and pasted some of your statements but changed countries/figures where appropriate. Doesn't it seem silly for me to say Uganda are economically healthier than USA?

Would you not agree with Bewal Express that perhaps continually repeating the GDP to debt ratios of Italy and Russia might not completely accurately compare the economies of both countries, in the same way me doing the same for Uganda and USA does not accurately compare the economies of these 2 countries?

It is a fairly simple point he was making, it feels to a reader of the thread that you are willingly not understanding it.

You did post on page 7: "
I am no expert but the issue is one of ego ..." lol :)) I mean come on bro, you really believe that this war is because of "ego" :yk

Jokes aside, there are reports of Nazi elements in Ukraine armed forces etc. Probably in Russian one as well. Who knows?

The way the Afghanistan defeat and now this war is being reported should be eye-opening for people with critical thinking. Let's start reading from page 1 of this very thread and slowly connect the dots.

This war is being fought today because weapon manufacturers (North Americans) need it.

It was the point I was trying to make to my brother but he wasn't prepared to listen. There are many metrics to measure economic health and Debt/GDP ratio is one of them but there are others that give a far more accurate picture. Russia hasn't used its resources anything like it should have done, it's economy is heavily reliant on Fossil fuels and Putin is to blame. Its not as if Russia doesn't have clever people.

Vladimir Putin has appealed directly to Ukrainian troops and told them "it will be easier for us to agree if you take power in your own hands".

During the address, the Russian president said it was "easier to negotiate with you" than the "gang of Nazis that has captured Kyiv" - an apparent reference to Ukraine's leadership in the capital.

"I once again appeal to the military personnel of the armed forces of Ukraine: do not allow neo-Nazis and (Ukrainian radical nationalists) to use your children, wives and elders as human shields," he said at a televised meeting with Russia's security council.

"Take power into your own hands, it will be easier for us to reach agreement."

The quotes were seen by some in Western capitals that the Russian president's goal is to install a puppet government in Ukraine.

On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was Russia's "number one target".

Putin claims Ukrainian military is using civilians as shields

Mr Putin went on to say Russian servicemen in Ukraine were acting "bravely, professionally and heroically".

He claimed most Ukrainian military units were reluctant to engage the Russian forces.

Those units offering resistance are mostly volunteer battalions made up of right-wing Ukrainian nationalists, he claimed, providing no evidence for his claims.

Echoing an earlier Russian military statement, he accused Ukrainian forces of deploying heavy weapons in urban areas in several big cities, including Kyiv and Kharkiv, to use civilians as shields.

Kremlin says Putin has agreed to organise negotiations

It comes as the Kremlin said Mr Putin had called Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to organise sending a delegation to the Belarusian capital Minsk for talks after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered to discuss Ukraine's neutrality.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Mr Putin was ready to send the delegation in response to Mr Zelenskyy's offer, which indicated he would be willing to negotiate dropping his country's bid to join NATO as Russia has demanded.

Mr Putin has claimed the refusal to discuss keeping Ukraine out of NATO prompted him to order military action to "demilitarise" it.

A tense exchange with Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson

During an at-times tense exchange, Sky News diplomatic editor Dominic Waghorn asked Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova how it could be acceptable for Mr Zelenskyy to surrender before he even begins negotiations.

Ms Zakharova replied: "It is true such work can start anytime, the only question is whether the other side - under the influence of the West - will start trying to weasel out of lie, or you yourselves, the representatives of the Kyiv regime, would start contradicting and debunking each other."

Mr Waghorn pushed her further on the question, asking: "Can you explain how you're describing this as the end of the war when it could be the beginning of the biggest military offensive we have seen in Europe since World War Two?"

She said: "Well no, I'm not going to fantasise this. This has nothing to do with the situation at hand. We are pursuing a stage by stage approach. The operation is ongoing, it has stated objectives, (the) Ministry of Defence is making its comments.

"We have recently seen the statement by Zolodymyr Zelneskyy and we have responded to it. We are not going to fantasise again, there was a request, we responded to a request, end of story."

I am no expert and nor is anyone else. As I said earlier Ukraine may well have fascists in their midst and so will Russia. To me the most important thing is that War kills innocent people and Russia is the Aggressor on this occasion.
I take the point that Ukraine isn't as innocent as claimed but we have enough problems in the World without this nonsense. There is an old African saying that when 2 elephants fight, its the grass that gets trampled. The poor are reeling from Corona and we have this nonsense from Russia. I repeat Russia isn't under threat from anyone, its too powerful

Fossil fuels? Oil is not a fossil fuel. It does not come from dinosaur bones.

Russia has used its resources wisely. It is the largest supplier of oil and gas in the EU, it has the largest deposits of Palladium (hydrogen purifier). Russia is now suppliying commodities to the East outside ofbthe SWIFT system, and Russia remains one of the top economies in Europe. It's a land full of natural resources.

This is why economic sanctions will not hurt Russia, in the same way sanctions in 2014 barley scratched Russia after it annexed Crimea.

Russia bans UK airlines over its airspace adding 90 mins to journeys towards the East.

More fuel costs, higher ticket prices for UK airlines!

Here are some (what I believe to be totally undeniable and proven) facts:

This war has been going for more than 7 years.

Thousands of Russians (and Ukrainians) have died in conflicted areas.

UK/USA/Zionists were continuously arming Ukraine.

This is not about being innocent or not. This war is literally to make sure that Ukraine doesn't get 'Murican nukes the way Cuba did back in 60s.

Of course, war kills innocent people. When Putin's puppet run the show there was some sort of equilibrium and bear slept.

Now UK/USA/Zionists have literally kicked the hornet's nest and expect Germany and France to get bruised by Russia :)) Kudos to German army leadership for telling warmongers to take a hike!

The real nonsense didn't come from Russia, it came from warmongers who benefit from this conflict: the Zionist-anglosphere.

NATO allies to provide more weapons to Ukraine, Stoltenberg says

BRUSSELS, Feb 25 (Reuters) - NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday the alliance was deploying parts of its combat-ready response force and would continue to send weapons to Ukraine, including air defences, while saying that Russia was trying to topple the Ukrainian government.

"We see rhetoric, the messages, which is strongly indicating that the aim is to remove the democratically elected government in Kyiv," he told a news conference following a virtual meeting of NATO leaders.

Some of the 30 NATO allies announced the type of weapons that they would supply Ukraine, including air defences, he said, without giving details. "Allies are very committed to continue to provide support," he said.

Stoltenberg said NATO was deploying elements of its rapid response force, which is made up of land, air, maritime and special operations forces, on allied territory.

"We are now deploying the NATO response force for the first time in the context of collective defence," he said.

Separately, Germany announced it would be deploying a company of troops to Slovakia where the soldiers will build part of a new NATO battlegroup to be established.

"We are working on quickly sending a company to Slovakia," German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht told German public TV ZDF after talks with her Slovak counterpart.

A company usually comprises some 150-200 troops.

Germany will also send a Patriot missile defence battery to NATO's eastern flank, together with some 300 troops to operate it. It was not immediately clear where exactly the system would go.

Russia vetoes U.N. Security action on Ukraine, China abstains

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Russia vetoed a draft U.N. Security Council resolution on Friday that would have deplored Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, while China abstained from the vote - a move western countries view as a win for showing Russia's international isolation.

The United Arab Emirates and India also abstained from the vote on the U.S.-drafted text. The remaining 11 council members voted in favor. The draft resolution is now expected to be taken up by the 193-member U.N. General Assembly.

GBP takes a beating today on the new Boris wants Russia to be blocked from SWIFT.

Meanwhile petrol price hit new highs in UK at £1.50/litre.

Energy bills to soar at £3000/year

Oil giants on FTSE help the index recover from Thursday's steep loses, inc BP which has a 20% stake in Russian oil company Rosneft.

Germany and Italy not in favour of blocking Russia from SWIFT in fear they cannot pay for Gas/Oil thus Russia could turn off the taps which will plunge most of Europe into darkness.

Inflation set to hit double digits in UK in coming months due to high Oil/Energy prices.

The list goes on but one thing is for sure, Putin's move is so calculated that he has Europe by the crown jewels.

All because NATO refused to compromise.

Shelling was heard in central Kyiv on Saturday morning, a Reuters correspondent reported, following reports of gunfire in the same area and an attack on a military base in the Ukrainian capital.

Fighting is underway in the cities of Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odessa, an adviser to the Ukrainian president's office has said.

It comes as people in Kyiv have been told to seek shelter due to street fighting in the capital.

US President Joe Biden has signed an order to provide up to $600m (£448 million) in "immediate military assistance" to Ukraine, according to the White House.

A second Russian Ilyushin Il-76 military transport plane was shot down near Bila Tserkva, 50 miles (85 kilometers) south of Kyiv, according to two American officials with direct knowledge of conditions on the ground in Ukraine.

On Friday, Ukraine's military said it had shot down a Russian military transport plane with paratroopers on board.

According to a statement from the military’s General Staff, the first Il-76 heavy transport plane was shot down near Vasylkiv, a city 25 miles south of Kyiv.

The Russian military has not commented on either incident so far, and the reports could not be immediately verified.

Transport planes can carry up to 125 paratroopers.

Poland will boycott their World Cup play-off against Russia because of the invasion of Ukraine, with captain Robert Lewandowski saying "we can't pretend that nothing is happening".

Polish football association president Cezary Kulesza has said the team "does not intend" to play the game.

Russia are due to host Poland in Moscow on 24 March, while Ukraine travel to Scotland on the same day.

"The right decision," tweeted Lewandowski.

Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski, 33, who is his country's all-time highest goalscorer, added: "I can't imagine playing a match with the Russian national team in a situation when armed aggression in Ukraine continues. Russian footballers and fans are not responsible for this, but we can't pretend that nothing is happening."

Sweden are also in the play-offs where, they will meet the Czech Republic. The winner of that tie could meet Russia for a place at the World Cup finals, which get under way in Qatar in November.

On Thursday, Fifa said it would monitor the situation after Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic said in a joint statement that play-off matches should not be played in Russia.

"No more words, time to act." tweeted Kulesza on Saturday.

"Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine, the Polish national team does not intend to play the play-off match against Russia.

"This is the only right decision. We are in talks with the Sweden and Czech Republic to present a common position to Fifa."

Other members of the Poland squad, including Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich and Southampton defender Jan Bednarek, posted messages on social media which outlined their position.

"It is not an easy decision but there are more important things than football," read the collective statement.

The Poland players also highlighted the case of team-mate Tomasz Kedziora, who plays for Ukrainian club Dynamo Kyiv and is still in the Ukrainian capital.

From SKY:

Everything is at stake': Ukraine forces capture 'hundreds' of Russians near Kyiv, MP says

Ukrainian forces have captured or killed "hundreds" of Russians near Kyiv, according to Sviatoslav Yurash, an MP who has taken up arms.

The MP spoke to Sky News before heading south to continue to the defence of Kyiv and said that Russian forces were about 3-4km (1.8-2.5 miles) from his location.

He said there were "people captured in the immediate range and vicinity".

"We don’t have a choice (to fight) the fact that Russia wants to annihilate the biggest state in Europe. He (Putin) wants to destroy it. Putin has said it time and time again, where he has tried to denounce the very idea of Ukraine," Mr Yurash said.

"Now he has launched a full invasion. I’m in Kyiv which is under siege at the moment from the north and the east. They're trying to cut us off in west and south as well.

The resistance has been strong, much stronger than what Russia might have expected. Doesnt look like things are going according to their plans as of now.

The resistance has been strong, much stronger than what Russia might have expected. Doesnt look like things are going according to their plans as of now.

It's been about 2-3 days. Russia too are going to be scoping out how many of their resources they're actually going to need to overpower the resistance. Ukraine stand no chance in head to head fighting.

I've been surprised how crap the russians have been .

They have suffered massive casualties , aircraft downed troops surrendering , troops lost and confused , ran out of fuel and food and surrendering to ukranian civilians.

They have to many young conscripts who are no up to war plus russia has been using muslim soldiers pushing them to get killed same way Mongols used muslim turks back in history.

Russians are asking chechens to fight they have even asked kazakhstan who has flatly refused to send their troops

When you invade you have to do what usa did massive indiscriminate bombing which kills thousands , russia hasn't done this because it doesn't want to kill its own slavic ukranian white people , if it was brown people like in Syria afghanistan they killed indiscrimentky scorch earth policy they were using chemical weapons as well and their wagner mercenaries were even killing syrian troops and forcing them at gunpoint to attack the sunni rebels.

The whole russian operation has been a shambles , its all over the place , the generals have messed up like the pakistani Charlie generals who were habitual drinkers and kept screwing up against India, looks like these russians generals are on vodka.

Ukranianians are fighting a guerilla warfare doing ambushes

This is gonna become another chechenya for the russians only ukraine is a massive country and will drain the Russian coffers and military big time, if it wasn't for their formidable nuclear and missile arsenal , usa nato would have smashed them long time ago and would have gone in.

When you invade you have to do what usa did massive indiscriminate bombing which kills thousands

That's how Russia should have done this? Genocide? You think what the USA did was ok or justifiable?

Some real goof ups by Russia so far in these first few days. They can always escalate though but the longer things go on the greater the costs would be. Lives are being wasted on the frontlines right now

Reddit, Twitter

So like me you can't be sure what is real and what isn't.

For example I see tons and tone of videos of Russian vehicles destroyed captured soldiers etc. But Russia have taken over about 10% of the country including 3 big cities and there hasn't been any destruction on the Ukranian side?

I don't believe any of it anywhere. All lies.

Estonia joins airspace ban on Russian airlines

More countries are banning Russian airlines from their airspace - the latest to announce such a move is the Baltic nation of Estonia, which borders Russia.

Fellow Baltic states Lithuania and Latvia are also preparing to take the step simultaneously, a statement by Lithuanian Transport Minister Marius Skuodis said.

Poland, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic have also imposed bans.

On Thursday, the UK banned Russia's national airline Aeroflot from landing in Britain.

Writing on Twitter, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas called on all other EU countries to follow suit.

"There is no place for planes of the aggressor state in democratic skies," she said.

Ukraine is massive landwise

Looks like russia has bitten off more than it can chew.

One big blunder they have done is not achieve air superiority

Ukraine is still flying drones and fighter jets and scoring kills against russian aircraft.

Also they have lots of manpads which are deadly for low flying aircraft

And nato has given them lots of atgms which they are using successfully in ambushes on convoys , guerilla style attacks.

Because russia is not using shock and awe with massive bombing there are many high rises in cities and they are perfect areas built up areas for ambushes and snipers.

When usa invaded countries it first did shock and awe and achieved air superiority.

Then when they went in if they met resistance they called in massive airstrikes and didn't care who they killed .

Looks like russia went in an attempt thinking ukranians will welcome them with flowers I'm surprised I thought ukranians would scarper like the Afghans but they have stayed put and given dogged resistance.

The man tightly clutching a rifle at one roadblock could easily have been in his early 60s.

We saw other men, in jeans and trainers, taking up position: the luxury of camouflage protection not possible in this moment of crisis.

Makeshift roadblocks had been assembled.

As we ventured out into the streets of Kyiv on Friday, we encountered these men and others who had answered the call to defend their nation.

We found a tractor and a delivery truck parked at strategic angles to block the path of any incoming attacker.

In other cities, steelworkers are reported to have welded new obstructions into place: forging their own defences.

And workers in a sewing factory who normally stitch uniforms have been making sandbags.

Across the country, patriotic Ukrainians are weaving their own narrative and hoping their collective effort will count for something in the face of Moscow's military might.

The urgency of all this tells you many fear it is a question of when - not if - they'll be face-to-face with the advancing Russian forces.

Today, in the heart of the capital, the streets are mostly deserted. There are few people to enjoy the church bells.

One man who may have well heard the soothing chimes in this darkest hour is Ukraine's president.

In the midst of what feels like an existential battle, Volodymyr Zelensky has been carrying out a personal mission of his own: touring the landmarks of this great city recording defiant video messages to the Ukrainian people, vowing to stay and fight.

Across this vast country, families have been sending their own hastily made films to their loved ones, reassuring them they are safe.

But there are no impressive architectural backdrops as in the president's videos. Instead you see the new subterranean existence many are being forced to endure: makeshift beds, piles of possessions, frightened pets.

Car parks, basements, metro stations are all now home for so many.

Daily life has been upended as they wait anxiously for the arrival of their would-be Russian occupiers.

However, it was new life that gave hope in one makeshift underground basement: a baby, delivered overnight, entering a world which has changed beyond recognition in barely 36 hours.

Tens of thousands of Ukrainians are pouring towards neighbouring countries to flee the Russian invasion.

In the three days since the invasion began, more than 115,000 have crossed into Poland alone - some travelling for more than two days, others joining queues 15km (10 miles) long at border points.

Those fleeing are mostly women and children, as all Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 are being told to stay and fight - in some cases separated from their families.

Protests and demonstrations in support of Ukraine have been held around the UK as Russia continues its invasion.

Thousands have joined various rallies, including outside the Russian embassy and Downing Street in London, and in Manchester and Edinburgh.

Eggs were thrown at the embassy and messages written in chalk were scrawled over the outer walls.

The EU, US and their allies have agreed to cut off a number of Russian banks from the main international payment system, Swift.
"This is intended to cut off these institutions from international financial flows, which will massively restrict their global operations," a German government spokesman said.
Russia is heavily reliant on the Swift system for its oil and gas exports.
But the move could also harm Western businesses doing business with Russia.
Swift, or the "Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication", is a secure messaging system that makes fast, cross-border payments possible, enabling international trade.
Based in Belgium, it facilitates transactions between more than 11,000 banks and financial institutions across the globe.
It plays a pivotal role in supporting the global economy, but it has no authority to make sanction decisions.
The banks set to be affected are "all those already sanctioned by the international community, as well as other institutions, if necessary", the German spokesman said.
Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said the allies would stop Russia from "using its war chest," by paralysing the assets of its central bank. They also agreed to freezing its transactions and prevent the central bank from liquidating its assets.
She added there would be a crackdown on so-called "golden passports" that "let wealthy Russians connected to the Russian government become citizens of our countries and gain access to our financial systems".
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Britain had taken "decisive action", tweeting: "We will keep working together to ensure Putin pays the price for his aggression."
The measures were agreed by the US, UK, Europe and Canada.
It is the latest round of sanctions to hit Russia since it launched an invasion of Ukraine this week.
Removing banks from Swift is deemed to be a severe curb because almost all banks use the system.
Russian banks frequently use Swift to facilitate oil and gas export transactions, a key part of the country's economy.
The country's transactions account for 1.5% of all of Swift's global transactions.

Wladimir and Vitali Klitshko have taken up arms against the Russian forces. This is getting out of control now

It is to be noted how no one has mentioned the religion of the Russians or Ukrainians. Had it been Muslim's they would be screaming how Muslim's are again killing each other. Both Russians and Ukrainians are orthodox Christians where as NATO is mostly made of Catholic and Protestant countries. Not a word has been said criticizing Christianity as a whole by the media even though their Bible is full of violence.

Looks like russia went in an half arsed attempt thinking ukranians will welcome them with flowers I'm surprised I thought ukranians would scarper like the namak haram Afghans but they have stayed put and given dogged resistance.
Good analysis. The only explanation is that Putin does care avoiding civilian collateral damage - either to avoid further bad rep or conscientously.

He can still achieve full air superiority if he is willing to sacrifice more Ukranian lives. His problem is not air dominance. He just does not have enough boots on ground to control/subjugate the population after the military victory.

Russian missiles have hit an oil terminal and a gas pipeline overnight, as Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine continues.

The oil terminal was set alight in Vasylkiv, southwest of the capital Kyiv, according to the town's mayor Natalia
Balasinovich.

In a video posted online, she said: "The enemy wants to destroy everything around."

Photos and video on social media showed large flames in the night sky and residents were told to be alert for toxic fumes.

There are now reports of fighting in the streets of Kharkiv. Russian troops had broken into the city in the past hour, local officials say.

Social media footage appears to show some Russian units in the city. There are also pictures appearing to show at least two Russian "Tiger" vehicles on fire in the city.

The BBC has not yet verified these pictures.

Kharkiv officials this morning have warned locals to stay in shelters and off the streets.

When Iraq, Syria or Afghanistan get bombed and their children get massacred by Western-warmonger-Zionists then it is bombs of ©Freedom and Democracy™ . Everyone collectively shuts the heck up. There is no Instagram emotional posts, no news segments, nothing, nada, Zilch.

Even now as I write this message someone from Yemen is getting a taste of ©Freedom and Democracy™.

Totally agree. The hypocrisy from the west is mind boggling, I have zero respect for NATO and its allies.

A new Harvard Center for American Political Studies (CAPS)-Harris Poll survey (conducted between Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 with 2,026 registered voters) released exclusively to The Hill on Friday found that 62% of those polled believed Putin would not be moving against Ukraine if Trump had been president.

A city in Ukraine's south has been taken over by Russia, Ukrainian media is reporting.

Russian troops now occupy Nova Kakhovka, or New Kakhovka. It's a small city but one strategically located on the Dnieper River which directly supplies the Crimean peninsula with water channels.

Its mayor Volodymyr Kovalenko has reportedly said that Russian troops have seized the city's executive committee and removed all Ukrainian flags from buildings.

Analysts have noted that Russia's advance from the south have been the most successful so far, with Russian forces threatening Kherson, Mykolaiv and Melitopol.

Russian troops have entered Ukraine's second-largest city Kharkiv, say local officials.

Earlier, we heard Ukraine's President Zelensky urge fighters from overseas to join a newly-formed "foreign legion" (see 07:15 GMT and 07:59 posts)

And this morning, UK Foriegn Secretary Liz Truss said if British people chose individually to head to Ukraine to join the fight, she would support them "absolutely if that is what they want to do".

Previously the UK has prosecuted people who travelled to the Middle East to fight for or against IS.

BBC

The hypocrisy is sickening!

What a waste of space of a human. She previously condemned the peaceful Rallies in London regarding the Palestinian situation!

Ukraine has taken Russia to the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Day 4 of the invasion. The development comes even as Russian forces hit Ukrainian cities with artillery and cruise missiles. Their troops have entered Ukraine's second largest city, Kharkiv, head of the regional administration said.

Western allies have agreed to remove selected Russian banks from the SWIFT global financial messaging system.

In a joint statement, leaders of Europe, UK, US, and Canada, said the move was in response to Vladimir Putin's decision to invade Ukraine late last week.

I keep expecting this Russian army to sweep all before them to massage Putins ego but so far they have shown themselves to be even more useless than the conscripts they sent to Afg in 1979. No doubt they will prevail with their overwhelming superiority in weapons but Just like the Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan, what comes after is going to be real interesting issue.

All over twitter now. Ukraine has agreed to talks with Russia in Gomel, Belarus. Medinsky will lead the talks from the Russian side.

You're probably making the mistake that I did which was to believe what wester media and Ukraine are telling us.

The truth is Putin doesn't want to flatten Ukraine, that serves no long term benefit to him when you think about rebuilding with his selected puppet in charge.

If he wanted to, he could press the red button and start bombing everything left and right leaving Ukraine in rubble - that is what America does.

Or he fears War Crimes if he targets civilians .

I'm not sure what to believe and still waiting for confirmation. But it seems as if Russia have forced Ukraine into negotiations.

Apparently multiple tweets online saying Ukrainian representatives already on their way to Gomel, Belarus. This tells me Putin has Ukraine in a bad situation.

Exactly.

Putin wants to ensure that the infrastructure in Ukraine is protected as much as possible including the gas/oil pipe lines.

He has sent the weaker of his war machines; his more powerful weapons and military are right behind.

There are also reports that comedian turned president of Ukraine, Zelenskyy, has fled Kiev. Well at least he was a professional comedian unlike dear Boris.

What a waste of space of a human. She previously condemned the peaceful Rallies in London regarding the Palestinian situation!

I feel religion is playing an undertone cause here. When Muslims were targeted for Genocide in Bosnia, not a word from the UK.

Still anyone who stands in solidarity with Nazi infected Ukraine should go and fight against Putin.

Yeah I'm sure he fears war crimes trials in the US, that's why he's invaded Ukraine.
I suppose he won't but as we have seen when the West gets its teeth into you, then travel for him and his family to most countries becomes impossible. The other thing is the optics, he said he was a liberator who then can't be seen to be killing 1000s indiscriminately.

Only the West & Aus seem to be leading international condemnation. Anything from Isreal? South America? Africa? ME? SC? I must have missed it.

Outside of the Western/NATO block, Putin's stock is rising simply because he's standing up to the real bullies, NATO/West.

We live in the west, that's why we see everything through western lens. Putin, like China is a power in the east. I'm sure if they thought they could become more prosperous by continuing to serve western interests they would do so. I wonder what happened to Huawei?

Or he fears War Crimes if he targets civilians .

Putin may not be perfect but surely a poster of your normal quality input has to realise there's more to this than we know. NATO and its allies are deceptive when it doesnt suit their rhetoric.

Putin puts Russia's strategic nuclear force on 'special alert'

Man, this dude is not joking around. O_o

WTH! This is scary.

Not really, this sort of stuff was the norm in the early 80s when actor turned President would goad USSR.

Saying this, where are the NATO apologists now? You wanted a war, a chance to destroy Russia - here it is - on your doorstep, and not in some weak country in the ME.
