Russia invades Ukraine

Newspaper in UK showing Ukrainian armed forces with the headline ‘Freedom Fighters’.

Fight against Russia and you’re a Freedom fighter, fight against the West and you’re a Terrorist.

Cannot believe we have Western/NATO sympathisers here given what the West/NATO have done in the past AND how we have condemned and ridiculed the West/NATO on these very forums.

Propaganda and fear is strong this time.

Putin may not be perfect but surely a poster of your normal quality input has to realise there's more to this than we know. NATO and its allies are deceptive when it doesnt suit their rhetoric.

I don't like violence and don't like the instigators on violence and Putin is responsible for this war. I am always with the peace makers and the ones that protect the innocent. I don't see Russia under threat from anyone.

Couldn't agree more with this.

Support for Ukraine at Wembley is cringeworthy. It was not long ago Ukraine supporters were criticised for their racist chants; all is forgotten in love and war I guess.

Who will ever take racism seriously in the UK when we have such double standards.

Vladimir Putin has ordered that Russia's nuclear deterrent forces are put on high alert.

The president said aggressive statements by NATO leaders and economic sanctions against Moscow were behind the decision.

Speaking on state television on Sunday, he said: "As you can see, not only do Western countries take unfriendly measures against our country in the economic dimension - illegitimate sanctions that everyone knows about.

"But also the highest-ranking officials of leading NATO countries are allowing themselves to make aggressive statements in relation to our country.

"For this reason I order the minister of defence and the chief of general staff to put deterrent forces on special combat duty."

Sky News Moscow correspondent Diana Magnay described the decision as an "incredibly dramatic, escalatory move", which will "really, really worry people".

"This is the first time that we've ever had a situation, in Putin's reign at least, where he has put his nuclear forces ready essentially for combat duty, on high alert," she said.

The move will heighten fears across the West that Russian forces could use nuclear weapons in the conflict with Ukraine.

Now for all you simpletons, do not believe we live in a democratic West, the companies take orders from the powers to be, there is no such thing as free markets; no different to Russia/China.

The West have sealed their fate by proving their stance is nothing but hypocritical. All doubt has been removed.

What happened to sport not being involved in politics?

It has always been the case that sport and politics are intrinsically linked entities and they cannot possibly be separated.

In terms of geography yes.

In terms of influence no.

Western influence has been on decline. Sleepy Joe made sure of it along with Boris and a rupttured EU. Russia wasn't scared of NATO, China isn't scared of the West, and the West is subservient to ME commodities.

Now with Russian banks out of SWIFT, the USD is toast.

UPDATE

The EU is taking the unprecedented step of sending arms to Ukraine following Russia's invasion.

It is also closing its airspace to Russian aircraft and banning Russian state media outlets.

The EU has warned that Europe is facing a major humanitarian crisis, and the number of people internally displaced by Russia’s invasion could be higher than seven million.

"We are witnessing what could become the largest humanitarian crisis on our European continent in many, many years," Janez Lenarcic, commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management, told a news conference.

"Currently, the expected number of displaced Ukrainians is over seven million people,” he said, citing UN estimates.

He said around 18 million Ukrainians are expected to be affected by the conflict in humanitarian terms, and about four million to flee the country.

"Even though these are very rough estimates, the figures are huge, and we have to prepare for this kind of emergency, which is of historical proportions," he added.

As we reported earlier, the UN’s refugee agency says the number of people fleeing Ukraine has now reached 368,000, with many in Poland, Romania, Hungary, Moldova and Slovakia.

Kyiv totally surrounded, mayor says, blocking escape routes

Kyiv’s mayor has been speaking to the Associated Press and says the city is now "encircled" by Russian forces.

Vitali Klitschko was asked whether there were plans to evacuate civilians should Russian troops seize the capital.

“We can’t do that, because all ways are blocked,” he said. “Right now we are encircled.”

Air raids have been sounding in the city as residents face another night under the threat of air strikes.

Turkey has said it will apply the terms of an international agreement that could see it block access to the Black Sea for the Russian Navy.

Under the 1936 Montreux Convention, Turkey has control over the two straits that connect the Black Sea, which sits on Ukraine’s southern coast, to the Mediterranean.

The convention guarantees the free passage of vessels belonging to Black Sea countries - like Russia - in peacetime, but allows Turkey to close the straits to all foreign warships in a time of war or if Turkey itself is threatened.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said earlier: “We have decided that the situation in Ukraine has turned into a war. We will be transparently applying the provisions of Montreaux.”

Turkey, which is a Nato ally but is also dependent on Russia for energy and tourism, had previously called Russia’s attack unacceptable but stopped short of calling the situation a war.

lol, tu tay ohna de pichey i peh gaya ehn.

Throughout human history, there is always a mention of a nation or a castled city (for example ancient Constantinople) who randomly select a clown or equivalent as their leader, this so called leader eventually gets them sacked and plundered and abandons the ship in rat-esque manner.

This Zionist-appointed Zelenskyy is the equivalent of that clown in our era. I mean zoom out the map and you can see it.

The clown is literally fueling a World war with blood of innocent Ukrainians.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has said she supports individuals from the UK who might want to go to Ukraine to join an international force to fight.

She told the BBC it was up to people to make their own decisions, but argued it was a battle "for democracy".

She said Ukrainians were fighting for freedom, "not just for Ukraine but for the whole of Europe".
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged foreign nationals "to join the defence of security in Europe".

Earlier on Sunday, he said Ukraine was setting up an "international" legion of volunteers for foreigners wishing to join the Ukrainian army in its fight against Russian forces.
"This is not just Russia's invasion of Ukraine, this is the beginning of a war against Europe. Against European unity," Mr Zelensky was quoted as saying on his official website.
"Everyone who wants to join the defence of security in Europe and the world may come and stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukrainians against the invaders of the 21st Century."
The UK government has stressed that British troops will not be sent to fight on the ground. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said Ukraine would instead be supported to "fight every street with every piece of equipment we can get to them".

Ukrainian forces say they have repelled an attack on the country's second city Kharkiv after fierce clashes with Russian forces.

Regional governor Oleh Sinegubov said the city was now rid of Russian troops after street-to-street fighting overnight.

Ukraine's ambassador to the UK Vadym Prystaiko said an "overwhelming" number of foreign nationals were "demanding to be allowed to fight" for Ukraine - as the Russian invasion reaches its fourth day. Ukraine has said it will arm all volunteers.

People who are settled in the UK will be able to bring their Ukrainian immediate family members to join them, the prime minister has announced.

Boris Johnson said the UK would not "turn our backs in Ukraine's hour of need".

Speaking to a Ukrainian cathedral congregation, he said he had never seen "so clear a distinction between good and evil" as the conflict in Ukraine.

He later announced a further £40m of humanitarian aid for the country.

The government has been facing growing calls to waive visa rules for Ukrainians seeking sanctuary in the UK amid the ongoing Russian invasion.

Before the latest announcement, only those Ukrainians who were deemed to be "dependants" of those already in the UK were being guaranteed entry.

And European Union member states have supported plans to take in all Ukrainian refugees for up to three years, with no need for them to apply for asylum.

Downing Street said the change in UK policy would "benefit many thousands of people who at this moment are making desperate choices about their future".

Speaking to the media, Mr Johnson said: "We want to be as generous as we possibly can, and certainly we want people who have relatives in Ukraine to be able to bring them over as fast as possible.

"We want to make sure that we have routes for people fleeing disaster, war, persecution in Ukraine to come here."

That statement came separately from his visit to the Cathedral of the Holy Family in London where he spoke a Ukrainian congregation, telling them the UK would do "everything it can to help economically, politically, diplomatically, militarily".

He said the people of Ukraine were facing "the darkest times in modern memory" and described Russia's invasion as a "barbaric and unprovoked attack".

Mr Johnson told the congregation of the Catholic cathedral that Ukrainians were neighbours with the UK, through shared ideals, as well as literally - with hundreds of thousands having come to live and work in Britain over the decades.

"I'm going to stress that there is no hostility in my heart towards the Russian people, none whatever - quite the reverse," he said.

Pakistan on Sunday called for de-escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine but stopped short of either condemning the Russian invasion or showing explicit support to Kyiv in a calculated move to maintain a delicate balance.

For the first time since the start of Russian invasion, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi held a telephonic conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart to discuss the situation.

It was also the first high-level contact between Pakistan and Ukraine since Prime Minister Imran Khan's visit to Moscow that had raised many eyebrows on the timing of his trip.

Pakistan, however, brushed aside the criticism and insisted that the visit had enhanced its diplomatic space and had nothing to do with the Ukraine crisis.

A statement issued by the foreign office said Qureshi held a telephonic conversation with the foreign minister of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba.

It said Foreign Minister Qureshi shared Pakistan’s perspective in detail, reiterating serious concern at the situation, underscoring the importance of de-escalation, and stressing the indispensability of diplomacy.

FM Qureshi noted that PM Imran during his recent visit to Moscow regretted the latest situation between Russia and Ukraine and said that Pakistan had hoped diplomacy could avert a military conflict.

He stressed that conflict was not in anyone’s interest, and that the developing countries were always hit the hardest economically, in case of conflict. The foreign minister underlined Pakistan’s belief that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

Qureshi also took up the important matter of evacuation of Pakistani community and students in Ukraine and their safe return to Pakistan. He appreciated the role played by the Ukrainian authorities in the evacuation process and asked for continued facilitation and smooth border crossing at the earliest possible.

The two foreign ministers agreed to remain in contact.

While Pakistan’s relationship with Russia has been on the upward trajectory, it also has deep defence ties with Ukraine.

Ukraine has supplied battle tanks to Pakistan and other equipment. It was because of this reason that Pakistan regularly sends retired military officers as ambassador to Kyiv.

Therefore, it is a challenge for Pakistan to walk a tightrope as it is also under pressure from the West to take a clear stance against Russia.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Qureshi has also received a telephone call from Lord Tariq Ahmad, Minister for South Asia, North Africa, the United Nations and the Commonwealth at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

The two sides exchanged views on Pakistan-UK relations and regional and international issues of mutual interest, according to an official statement.

The foreign minister reiterated the importance Pakistan attaches to its good relations and close cooperation with the UK and other European partners. He hoped that the next round of Strategic Dialogue with the UK will take place in near future.

On the developments in Ukraine, Qureshi reiterated concerns at the heightened tensions and military escalation.

On Pakistan-UK ties, the two sides reiterated their resolve to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.

Lord Ahmad thanked the foreign minister for the detailed exchange and expressed hope that UK and Pakistan will keep on working together on issues of common interest.

China has urged calm after Russian President Vladimir Putin put his nuclear deterrent on high alert.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said all sides should remain calm and avoid further escalation.

He also reiterated China's view that all countries' legitimate security concerns should be taken seriously, signalling China's support for Russia.

Dozens killed, hundreds wounded in rocket strikes on Kharkiv, Ukraine says

Dozens of people have been killed in Russian rocket strikes on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, Ukraine's interior ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko has said.

"Kharkiv has just been massively fired upon by grads (rockets)," he wrote on Facebook.

"Dozens of dead and hundreds of wounded."

Sky News defence and security editor Deborah Haynes, in Ukraine, says: "There has been a horrific bombardment of Ukraine's second city.

"We have got these reports coming through from the minister of interior of dozens killed, hundreds wounded in this barrage of rockets.

"The images that are appearing, we have yet to verify them, but the images do give a sense that something very horrific has happened in that city on day five of the conflict."

Reuters are also saying that shelling has intensified in the city of Donetsk.

Sky News has located these videos to northeastern Kharkiv. A military expert has told Sky News that this appears to be the classic pattern for a cluster munition.

4 days ago everything was normal, people going to malls, and than 1 day later they are in bunkers.

Another interesting and sad thing was that on the ukraine side of the border everyone is in bunkers or metro staying basements. In the Russian side of the border life is normal.....

How bad is the Ukrainian army

How bad is the Ukrainian army

I don't think its a case of the Ukrainian army being bad, there's not many armies that can take on the Russians which has one of the biggest armed forces in the world.

In fact, they're putting up a fierce résistance with whatever limited resources they have. A decade ago, it would have been unthinkable for Ukraine to think that Russia would attack it as they have deep social and cultural ties from the their past history.

In the Russian side of the border, aside from the financial where they're all running to the cash machines, you'd expect a more normal situation. Because they are the invading force and Ukraine can't mount a counter offensive against it.

Earlier, Ukraine's parliament appeared to say talks with Russian officials on the Belarusian border had ended.

But they have since clarified officials were simply on a break and a third round of negotiations are starting again shortly.

Absolutely sickening that Africans and other non-whites are being barred from crossing the Ukrainian borders.

I loath and stand against racism which is prevalent in every country including England.

Russia is not NATO. They dont want to kill any civilians.

Have you noticed there arent many videos of battles?

If Russia wanted it could have destoryed all of Ukraine, moved in with a new house. There is no fierce resistance, they are hiding while forcing civlians to take up arms and make Molotov cocktails. The puppet government of Ukraine want civilians to be killed so they can take the moral high ground.

Ukrainians dying for Nato, they need to wake up to being used by American and its lapdogs.

Also Ukraine's leader is a Zionist, he has majority of the sympathisers who are openly causing mischief on the border of Russia.

Even before Russia enters Kiev, Ukarians are lead by a professional comedian, and their nazism is on full flow!

Yet the western world have basically turned a blind eye on the treatment of minorities in Ukraine who are being prevented to leave .

Russia-annexed Crimea finally got access to fresh water after eight years when the invading Russian military bombed down a dam built by Ukraine that blocked flow from the Dneiper river, writes Sanjib Kr Baruah. ETV Bharat had reported on January 24 how water will become the root cause for a full-blown war.

https://www.etvbharat.com/english/n...am-constructed-by-ukraine/na20220228120415641

Great job by Russia. Crimea was being punished with no water, causing drought.

This was one of the key objectives, taking out the dam now water is flowing to Crimea.

You wont see this on the BBC.

Yep, I find it appalling how minorities in Ukraine are being treated in Ukraine yet that's swept under the carpet. As soon as Ukraine's puppet leader mentions " blond hair and blue eyed people are being killed" the western world shows true hypocrisy. BLM is nothing more than a political point gaining system, and majority are proper uncle Tom's.

I wouldnt be surprised if a lot of ethnic students and other minorities are not being used as human shields.

Naah dude, change your social media flag wavering to Ukraine, and you are in with the White Christian West.

Their excude? President of Ukraine cannot be a racist/nazi, then again we all know how Zionists were incognito with the Nazis - Haavara agreement! .

Lol, I do live in western Europe but it doesnt mean to say I have lost my morals, and my Asian background. War/killings should never be a option and dialogue the only way forward. But what happened in Iraq Afganistan, Syria, I feel hypocrisy is rife in the so called western democracies.

Shell says it will end all joint ventures with Russian gas company Gazprom

The joint ventures are worth around $3bn.

Shell also said it would end its involvement in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which was set to run between Russia and Germany - but that Germany last week said it would shelve plans for.

"Our decision to exit is one we take with conviction," said Shell's chief executive, Ben van Beurdenvan Beurden.

"We cannot – and we will not – stand by. Our immediate focus is the safety of our people in Ukraine and supporting our people in Russia. In discussion with governments around the world, we will also work through the detailed business implications, including the importance of secure energy supplies to Europe and other markets, in compliance with relevant sanctions."

In response, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said he had spoken to Shell's chief executive earlier and the company had made the "right call".

Ukraine-Russia negotiations have reached ‘certain decisions’

https://www.rt.com/russia/550883-ukraine-russia-talks-decisions/

Some good news coming through. Hoping Ukranians who are more sensible than their puppet PM, reach a deal soon to end the conflict.

Has anyone noticed the west are not mentioning any peace talks or arent pushing for any?

West is only pushing for Ukraine to fight, fight and fight more.

Ukraine have set up a foriegn legan army, asking for people around the world to come and fight with them.

The UK government said its ok for Brits to go and fight. But they forgot to mention this is against British law, they will be arrested and sent to jail on return..if they come back alive.

EU Russia and Ukraine seem like losers in the sequence of events, clearer picture to appear after a week, if Ukraine still stands.

Not sure that he is really. I always thought that he was, but he might have made a mistake this time.
No chance. Him and his cabinet have already worked out every move the European Union, NATO and US will take.

Ukrain will have no choice but to succumb to Russia’s demands, and the world will not do anything to get its hands dirty because they $imply cannot afford to do $o

The quicker this conflict ends and lives are saved the better

The last thing nato and the west should want is blue eyed and blonde, prosperous civilised white europeans dying and becoming refugees

Russia has more than doubled its interest rate to 20% in a bid to halt a slump in the value of its currency.

The Bank of Russia raised the rate from 9.5% after the rouble sank 30% after new Western sanctions. The currency then eased back to stand 20% down.

The collapse in value erodes the currency's buying power and could wipe out the savings of ordinary Russians.

Amid pictures at the weekend of queues at cash machines, Russia said it had the resources to ride out sanctions.

Ahead of an emergency meeting between President Vladimir Putin and his economic advisers on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "These are heavy sanctions, they're problematic, but Russia has the necessary potential to compensate the damage from these sanctions." He said Russia would respond with its own sanctions.

At the weekend, Russia's central bank issued an appeal for calm amid fears that new financial sanctions could spark a run on its banks. It said it had the "the necessary resources and tools to maintain financial stability."

Videos on social media on Sunday appeared to show long queues forming at cash machines and money exchanges in Moscow, with people worried that their bank cards may stop working or that limits will be placed on the amount of cash they can withdraw.

Chris Weafer, chief executive at consultancy firm Micro-Advisory and based in Moscow, said on Monday he was seeing some queues in food stores.

"You are beginning to see a little bit of queuing in some grocery stores, particularly people buying some goods that they think might come into short supply due to trade restrictions or maybe will be subject to big price increases because of the rouble devaluation.

"This set of sanctions is hitting ordinary Russians to an extent that previous sanctions have not and people are now becoming aware of that.

"People are a lot more fearful. There is already talk about some companies having to either go on reduced working hours, or even suspend production because they're not able to access maybe key parts from the West due to sanctions or due to trade limitations, so there's a great deal of concern on the street."

Moscow resident Anastasia told Reuters that she expected her economic situation to get worse. "It's inevitable in these circumstances," she added. Whilst another Moscow resident Sergey said he was already seeing an impact. "Prices are rising, of course, savings are shrinking and stocks are falling."

The UK, along with the US and EU, have already cut off Russia's banks from financial markets in the West, prohibiting dealings with the central bank, state-owned investment funds and the finance ministry.

I tuned into Republic TV after a long time and been watching since this crisis began. It's been good informative back and forths between the Ukranian, Russian and US guests. Some comedy moments in there too with Arnab going after the Chinese pundits.

Fair enough, but if your suggesting NATO and its allies as peacemakers then this couldn't be further from the truth.

NATO killed 1000s of Iraqis and Afghans but that doesn't give Putin a free pass to kill more innocent people. Violence is wrong and I am against the perpetrators of Violence.

Nato is sending hundreds of extra troops to eastern Europe to guard against a possible attack on its territory from Russia.

Germany has joined other Nato member states such as Britain and is sending weapons to help Ukraine fight the Russian invasion. The EU says it will provide hundreds of millions of pounds to help arm Ukraine.
Russia has put its nuclear forces on "special alert" to counter what it calls Nato's aggression.

What is Nato?

Nato - the North Atlantic Treaty Organization - is a military alliance formed in 1949 by 12 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK and France.
Members agree to come to one another's aid in the event of an armed attack against any one member state.

Its aim was originally to counter the threat of post-war Russian expansion in Europe.
In 1955 Soviet Russia responded to Nato by creating its own military alliance of eastern European communist countries, called the Warsaw Pact.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, a number of former Warsaw Pact countries switched sides and became Nato members. The alliance now has 30 members.

Why is Nato not planning to intervene in Ukraine?
Ukraine is not a member of Nato, so the alliance is not obliged to come to its defence.
However, it is a "partner" country, meaning there is an understanding it will join at some point in the future.

Some Nato nations have been sending weapons to Ukraine to help its defend itself against Russia.
The US sent weapons $200m (£149m) to Ukraine, including Javelin anti-tank missiles and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, and allowed other Nato countries to supply Ukraine with US-made weapons. It says it will now send an extra $350m (£261m) in weapons including Javelin anti-tank missiles, anti-aircraft systems and body armour.

Britain has sent 2,000 short-range anti-tank missiles and says it will send more weapons in the future.
Germany is sending 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger missiles. It has also dropped some restrictions on other countries sending German-made weapons to Ukraine.

The Netherlands is sending 200 anti-aircraft missiles. Belgium is sending 2,000 machine guns and fuel. Sweden is sending 5,000 anti-tank weapons, helmets, body armour and rations.

Poland has started sending ammunition, while Estonia and Latvia have begun to send fuel, anti-tank weapons and medical supplies. The Czech Republic has said it will send guns and ammunition. Slovakia has said it will send ammunition and fuel.

The EU has said it will be spending up to 450m euros (£376m) to fund the supply of weapons to Ukraine. It's the first time in its history the EU has helped provide arms for a warzone.

One of Russia's demands before the invasion was that Ukraine should never be allowed to join - something the alliance refused to agree to.

Russia fears Nato has been encroaching on its territory by taking on new members in eastern Europe and that admitting Ukraine would bring Nato forces into its backyard.

Nato says it is a purely defensive alliance. Its secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a "brutal act of war".

What presence does Nato have in Eastern Europe?

Nato already has troops stretching from the Baltic republics in the north to Romania in the south.
They were stationed there in 2014 after Russia's annexation of Crimea and are designed to act as a "tripwire" in case of a Russian attack.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has heightened concerns among members in eastern Europe.
Nato is now deploying elements of its 40,000-strong Response Force to Eastern European countries bordering Russia and Ukraine.

It has 100 fighter jets on high alert and has 120 ships, including three carrier groups, patrolling the seas from the far north to the eastern Mediterranean.

"We will defend every ally and every inch of Nato territory," said Mr Stoltenberg.

President Putin of Russia has put the country's nuclear forces onto "special alert" because of "aggressive statements" by the West.

The announcement does not mean Russia intends to use the weapons.
The US immediately condemned his decision calling it an "unacceptable escalation".

The US has committed to sending more troops to Europe, but President Biden said they will not be fighting in Ukraine itself.

The extra troops will join the four multinational battlegroups Nato has in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, and its multinational brigade in Romania.

How did Nato step up defences before the conflict?

In the months leading up to the conflict, the US sent nearly 3,000 extra troops to Poland and Romania to reinforce Nato's eastern borders, and put another 8,500 combat-ready troops on alert.

The UK sent 350 more troops to Poland and doubled its strength in Estonia with an extra 900 troops.

It sent more RAF jets to southern Europe and two Royal Navy warships to patrol the eastern Mediterranean alongside other Nato warships.

It ordered 1,000 troops to be in a state of readiness to provide support in the event of a humanitarian crisis caused by a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Denmark, Spain, France and the Netherlands, also sent fighter jets and warships to eastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean.

It seems the puppet PM and Nato does not want peace in Ukraine. The talks have broken down.

Russia is now obliterating the fascist army of Ukraine.

Nato want a long drawn out war to cripple the Russians but they know this.

Two wrongs doesn't make a right though does it ? Surely we should apply the same standards to every nation.

Russia are seemingly going further than regime change - they're actually splitting off Donestk and Luhansk away from Ukraine by recognising them as independent.

Redrawing borders by force sets a dangerous precedent. How would we feel if another country invaded Balochistan and recognised it as independent because of our actions in the the province ?

Pakistan made nukes for this very reason. We learned the lesson from East Bengal, and decided never again.

Unfortunately, Ukraine does not have any, so they should have thought of that before antagonizing Russia. Or they should have kept their nukes, instead of relying on a piece of paper.

Their borders have already been redrawn they will never get Crimea back. Most likely Donbass region is gone. And its possible they might lose all land east of the dnieper river.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Monday held a telephonic conversation with his Polish counterpart Zbigniew Rau and discussed bilateral ties as well as the evacuation of stranded Pakistanis from war-hit Ukraine.

The two sides exchanged views on Pakistan-Poland relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

FM Qureshi “highly appreciated” the Polish side for receiving Pakistani students and the community being evacuated from Ukraine.

He added that Pakistan looked forward to continued assistance from the Polish government during this difficult period.

The Polish foreign minister assured of Poland’s full support and facilitation in the evacuation process. So far, 606 Pakistani including students have been safely evacuated to Poland from Ukraine.

Recalling his earlier phone conversation with the Polish foreign minister last September, Qureshi said that Pakistan had close ties with Poland and remained committed to further enhance them across all areas of mutual benefit.

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, FM Qureshi expressed Pakistan’s serious concern and underscored Pakistan’s belief that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

The foreign minister noted that Prime Minister Imran Khan in his recent visit to Moscow had regretted the situation and had hoped that diplomacy could avert a military conflict.

The prime minister had further stated that conflict was not in anyone’s interest and that the developing countries were always hit the hardest economically.

Qureshi reiterated Pakistan’s strong emphasis on de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy. The two ministers agreed to remain in close contact.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan embassy in Ukraine said on Monday that a night-time curfew was imposed in various cities of Ukraine for the last three days; however, the embassy was taking steps to repatriate the stranded Pakistani community members, including students.

The embassy said that the total number of Pakistanis in Ukraine was 7,000–4,000 ordinary citizens and 3,000 students. It added that a large number of Pakistanis had already left Ukraine on the instructions of the embassy, while steps were being taken to repatriate the remaining Pakistanis and the students.

In this regard, the embassy has already set up various focal points for the return of the citizens. It added that the embassy was providing accommodation and transportation facilities to the Pakistani students in Ternopil.

According to the embassy statement, for the past two days, it added, Kyiv had been under the curfew. “The situation is uncertain in Kyiv at present, but as soon as the situation improved, the stranded Pakistani students will be evacuated,” it added.

Where are battles ongoing in Ukraine?

The Institute for the Study of War has released its latest update on the Ukrainian-Russian war, as the conflict enters a sixth day.

War analysts say the Russians have slowed their assault as Moscow regroups following "poor planning and execution" based on miscalculations about the Ukrainians' ability to resist.

The ISW adds the next "major phase" of the Russian invasion will likely begin within the next 24 hours, and play out over the next three days.

But what is happening across Ukraine at the moment?

In Kyiv, Russian activity remains "limited" as troops outside the capital wait for reinforcements to arrive. Ukraine's defence of the city has been strong so far, but stronger attacks are likely to resume in the next 24 hours.

The ISW says the Ukrainian military "likely cannot prevent Russian forces from enveloping or encircling Kyiv" should Moscow send "enough combat power". However, it adds that Ukraine can likely make Russian efforts to seize the capital "extremely costly and possibly unsuccessful".

Elsewhere, in Kharkiv, Russian troops are now using tube and rocket artillery weapons as the ongoing assault intensifies. This has "dramatically increased" civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.

Analysts says the Ukrainian resistance remains "determined" around the country's second-largest city, "but it is unclear how long Ukrainian defenders can hold if Russia sustains or increases attacks".

In southern Ukraine, Russian advances remain slower than they had been in the early stages of the war. Analysts say this is "possibly due to Russian efforts to concentrate sufficient combat power to conduct decisive operations against Mariupol and, possibly, Zaporizhia".

Missile strike hits central Kharkiv as conflict continues in multiple Ukrainian cities

According to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, an air strike hit directly in front of a government building in Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv. Ukrainian officials also said on Tuesday that as many as 70 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the north-eastern city of Okhtyrka after a Russian artillery strike on a military base on Sunday. Meanwhile, a large convoy of Russian troops was seen near Kyiv and Russian forces have reportedly entered the southern city of Kherson.

40-mile Russian convoy threatens Kyiv; shelling intensifies

A 40-mile convoy of Russian tanks and other vehicles threatened Ukraine’s capital on Tuesday, the sixth day of the war. But even as Russia intensified shelling of the country’s second-largest city, the Kremlin has found itself increasingly isolated by tough economic sanctions that have sent its currency plummeting.

After a first, five-hour session of talks between Ukraine and Russia yielded no stop in the fighting, both sides agreed to another meeting in coming days. Ukraine’s embattled president, however, said he believed the stepped-up shelling was designed to force him into concessions.

“I believe Russia is trying to put pressure (on Ukraine) with this simple method,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late on Monday in a video address. He did not offer details of the talks that took place on Monday, but he said Kyiv was not prepared to make concessions “when one side is hitting another with rocket artillery”.

“For the enemy, Kyiv is the key target,” Zelenskyy said. “We did not let them break the defence of the capital, and they send saboteurs to us ... We will neutralise them all.”

Zelenskyy said Russia, which calls its actions in Ukraine a “special operation”, was targeting a thermal power plant providing electricity to Kyiv, a city of three million people.

Six days into the invasion, the Russian military’s movements have been stalled by fierce resistance on the ground and a surprising inability to dominate the airspace. Many Ukrainian civilians, meanwhile, spent another night huddled in shelters, basements or corridors.

“I sit and pray for these negotiations to end successfully, so that they reach an agreement to end the slaughter,” said Alexandra Mikhailova, weeping as she clutched her cat in a shelter in Mariupol. Around her, parents tried to console children and keep them warm.

Ukrainian officials also reported a Russian bombardment of Kharkiv, the country's second-largest city, had killed dozens of civilians. It was not possible to independently verify the casualty figures.

“Barbaric rocket attacks and MLRS (multiple launch rocket systems) of peaceful cities are evidence that they are no longer able to fight armed Ukrainians,” Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov said on Facebook.

The Kremlin has twice in as many days raised the specter of nuclear war and put on high alert an arsenal that includes intercontinental ballistic missiles and long-range bombers. Stepping up his rhetoric, President Vladimir Putin denounced the United States and its allies as an “empire of lies”.

Russian army reaches Kherson
The Russian army on Tuesday reached the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, near Moscow-controlled Crimea, and is setting up checkpoints on its outskirts, the city's mayor said.

“The Russian army is setting up checkpoints at the entrances of Kherson,” mayor Igor Kolykhayev said on Facebook. “Kherson has been and will stay Ukrainian,” he said.

Videos on local media in Kherson showed the Russian army entering the city.

“Today, I am responsible for the life of our city and provide protection in the way that our capabilities allow,” Kholykhayev said.

He asked people not to leave their homes outside curfew hours.

“The greatest value this city has is your lives. This is not a fight, this is a war,” he said.

Kherson has a population of around 280,000 and lies north of the Crimea peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014.

Russia claimed to have besieged the city on Sunday.

The Russian army also says it controls the port city of Berdyansk, which lies north-west of Crimea on the Azov Sea.

Fighting raged in other towns and cities. The strategic port city of Mariupol, on the Sea of Azov, is “hanging on”, said Zelenskyy adviser Oleksiy Arestovich. An oil depot was reported bombed in the eastern city of Sumy.

Russian artillery hit a military base in Okhtyrka, a city between Kharkiv and Kyiv, and more than 70 Ukrainian soldiers were killed, the head of the region wrote on Telegram. Dmytro Zhyvytskyy posted photographs of the charred shell of a four-story building and rescuers searching rubble.

In a later Facebook post, he said many Russian soldiers and some local residents also were killed during the fighting on Sunday. The report could not immediately be confirmed.

Ceasefire talks
Ceasefire talks between Russia and its southern neighbour held on Monday failed to reach a breakthrough and negotiators have not said when a new round would take place.

A top Putin aide and head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, said that during the first talks held between the sides since the invasion, the envoys “found certain points on which common positions could be foreseen”. He said they agreed to continue the discussions in the days ahead.

Meanwhile, an embattled Ukraine moved to solidify its ties to the West by applying to join the European Union — a largely symbolic move for now, but one that won’t sit well with Putin, who has long accused the United States of trying to pull Ukraine out of Moscow’s orbit.

Putin faces mounting international pressure for last week launching the biggest assault on a European state since World War Two, and the systemic impact of Western sanctions led to a near 30 per cent collapse in the rouble on Monday before central bank intervention rescued the currency from its lows.

Turkey shuts straits to warships
Nato ally Turkey delivered another blow to Moscow on Monday by warning warring countries not to send warships through its Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits that separate the Black Sea from the Mediterranean, effectively bottling up Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

Washington has ruled out sending troops to fight Russia or enforcing a no-fly zone as requested by Ukraine, fearing an escalation between the world's top two nuclear powers.

But, the United States and its allies have instead promised military aid to Kyiv.

Human rights groups and Ukraine's ambassador to the United States accused Russia of using cluster bombs and vacuum bombs. The United States said it had no confirmation of their use.

Public health experts say Ukraine is running low on critical medical supplies and fears of a wider public health crisis are growing as people flee their homes and health services and supplies are interrupted.

Russia says its actions are not designed to occupy territory but to destroy Ukraine's military capabilities and capture what it regards as dangerous nationalists.

The Zionist-warmongers are disappointed. This bloodshed is kinda minimal. These murderers want more innocent blood to spill.

Absolutely. Not once have NATO and its allies have resorted to promote peace but have supplied Ukraine with more ammunition to make matters even worse.

If you have a look at the convoys that Russia has outside Kharkiv and Kyiv you realise they actually haven't even used a fraction of the firepower that was available to them. I guess they were hoping for a quicker early surrender. They didn't get it, probably underestimated the western reaction slightly and the Ukraine defence. But all the signs are they want this finished tonight.

Lets face it, no one in the West gave a toss about Ukraine, that is until the media dicated so. The West is pushing the anti-Russian narrative, purely hypocritical in every literal sense of the word, and the lapdogs are lapping it up.

Heck the West doesn’t care about Ukraine - rejected from NATO application; rejected from EU application, yet now Ukraine’s applications are fast tracked.

I hope this war goes right down to the wire; time to arm those nukes and teach the West/NATO a lesson. Putin and his cabinet have wargamed every scenario, and anyone who thinks Russia cares about the Rubel doesn’t understand - a new currency is about to be born, and it will not be tied with the USD.

And for those who claim they are against violence and innocent loss of life, well this is a euphemism for we have no answer to the validity of Russia’s concerns - fact. Countless lives are lost every day around the world; end;ess violence around the world, but no, lets speak up when the media commands us to. Pathetic.
