Russia invades Ukraine

No-fly zone: What it means and why the West won't act

A no-fly zone over Ukraine would mean that military forces - specifically Nato forces - would engage directly with any Russian planes spotted in those skies and shoot at them if necessary.

Nato forces engaging with Russian aircraft or equipment risks a rapid escalation.

No fly Zone is WW3.

Hilary Clinton was desperate for a no fly zone in Syria , it was her main goal if elected. Thankfully Trump won, threw the idea in the bin because no matter what he is , he's not satanic.

US President Joe Biden has told Congress that Vladimir Putin badly misjudged how the West would hit back once he invaded Ukraine.

In a primetime speech, Mr Biden vowed "an unwavering resolve that freedom will always triumph over tyranny".

Democrats and Republicans reacted to Mr Biden's appeal to show support for Ukraine by rising in unison to applaud.

His State of the Union address came as pandemic-weary Americans grapple with galloping inflation.

In an hour-long address to lawmakers on Tuesday night, the Democratic president said: "Putin's war was premeditated and unprovoked. He rejected repeated efforts at diplomacy.

"He thought the West and Nato wouldn't respond. And he thought he could divide us here at home."

Mr Biden - whose chaotic withdrawal last year from Afghanistan damaged his popularity among Americans - added: "Putin was wrong. We were ready."

He announced that the US would ban Russian aircraft from American airspace, following similar bans by Canadian and European authorities.

The US and it allies have launched a barrage of sanctions against Russia's economy and financial system and Mr Putin himself. In his speech Mr Biden deviated from his prepared remarks by vowing further economic retaliation, warning Mr Putin: "He has no idea what's coming."

The US president also welcomed Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova, who received a standing ovation as she sat in US First Lady Jill Biden's VIP box.

Reuters reports at least 21 people have been killed and 112 wounded in shelling in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv

China rattled by calls for Japan to host US nuclear weapons.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...by-calls-for-japan-to-host-us-nuclear-weapons

Oh dear.

This is yet more blatant warmongering by the Zionist-Anglosphere.

Even a country like Pakistan has missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons half way around the world.

USA, China and Russia can literally nuke everywhere in the world with almost pinpoint accuracy.

No need for anyone else to "host" more nukes. Mutual assured destruction is already guaranteed  Aukus of all people should know that.

Nukes over SRBM/Hypersonic missiles is a much bigger threat with no mitigation measures.

1. Get rid of current government
2. Replace with puppets temporarily until new government elected
3. Bomb all US funded chemical and biological facilities
4. Get Crimea and Doneskt officially completing the southern corridor

#3. I think Russia will want a permanent sort of control over all these Soviet era facilities capable of holding nuclear arsenal.

When (very soon Insha'Allah) this war ends, Russia will sign an agreement accordingly.

Ukraine is over 70% ethnic Ukrainians and around 17% ethnic Russians. The Ukrainians seems very patriotic and anti Putin. I don't see how a puppet regime will work.

Whatever you say about Nato. It's the best security insurance out there. If Ukraine was part of Nato Putin would never attack.

Thats not how it works. I've lived in Ukraine especially in Eastern region for years. Older generation still have loyalty towards broken soviet union. The resistance wouldn't be as high as in the case of other countries. Due to invasion there will be some protest but it will die down over the course of time.

It will be futile comparison between Russia and Ukraine to other countries. The relationship between Ukraine and Russia is very different.

I personally think Putin has failed in a sense

He should have went for a smaller scale invasion with no threat to take Kiev to bring the Ukranians to the negotiation table.

There have been pressure internally on zelensky to make a deal with Putin.

Now he has pushed the Ukranians too far and isolated himself from the rest of the world.

Scarily his only real option is to flatten Ukraine and then arrange some talks with Nato to be accepted back into the world systems.

Or Ukraine is split in two which likely wont happen.

He cant pull back now and ploughing forward means come up against a population that doesn't want to bend.

Perhaps he can leverage gas in exchange for being readmitted to the international fold.

It could be another Afghanistan for them with no way out.

Putin's main objective is to make sure that Ukraine does not get nukes. The bombings and occupation of the facilities will make sure the success or failure of this invasion.

Also, a hungry man with nothing to lose fights. Afghans are / were hungry with nothing to lose. Ukrainians are not in a similar state.

Russia has learned a lot from Soviet failure in Afghanistan. This time around they won't make the same mistake. They'll complete the objective and get out.

Western media (BBC and other Zionist owned pro liars) are a joke.

Not sure if Putin might have overplayed his hand a bit with this one. He’s a very smart, cunning and strong leader and has been the most influential person in the world for quite a few years now alongside President Xi and Donald Trump, but past performance is no guarantee of future performance & I don’t think Putin expected things to play out quite like this. Just my personal view and I could turn out to be wrong. Time will tell.

Well it is a Pyrrhic victory and I'd hard-pressed to even call it a victory.

If the objective is to get Ukraine in a position where they never get nukes then is it worth the price of making Russia an international pariah and brought to its knees?

Vlad has massively overplayed his hand and went in too fast too soon.

Despite the massive failure of the western military in the form of NATO, this war has unified the west and they have brought Russia to its knees economically and culturally.

Young Russians will wake up dreaming of a western lifestyle yet are now seeing themselves cut out from the world, their future is in tatters ( potentially) and they are excluded from progress ( or the illusion of progress) that comes from being a member of the international community.

Even if Russia as you put it complete the job and get out - what's next?

Putin will be king of a crumbling castle and the western world will charge on.

Agree with the Pyrrhic partially but not entirely.

Look at this map:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Ukrainian_War#/media/File:2022_Russian_invasion_of_Ukraine.svg

Freezing tempratures and logisitical problems and they are making huge headway all around North, East and South. Ukraine is a huge country and this invasion is a week in now. The Russians are surrounding key cities and they still haven't deployed their heavy military equipment.

As a few military men have said, it might not be a resounding victory but its not far from a failure.

Ukraine's president reveals he has spoken to Boris Johnson

Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has tweeted to say he has "coordinated actions" with Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

He added his thanks for the assistance being given to Ukraine.

It comes after the country's foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, says he spoke to UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

They discussed "coordinated new sanctions on Russia for its barbaric aggression against Ukraine, as well as steps to close any loopholes and leave Russia no chance to bypass current and future sanctions," he said.

Ukraine claims 5,840 Russian troops killed

Officials in Ukraine have released an updated estimate of the number of Russian troops killed during the seven-day conflict.

Between 24 February and 2 March, Ukraine claims a total of 5,840 Russians were killed at war. Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the number was close to 6,000.

Other Russian losses noted by the Ukrainians include:

30 aircraft
31 helicopters
211 tanks
862 armoured patrol vehicles
82 artillery systems
9 anti-aircraft warfare systems
60 fuel tanks

Do you honestly believe that Russia would be surrounding Kyiv, Kharkiv and most of the Eastern and South borders inside a week if they had suffered that much? The numbers Ukraine are giving are way over exagerated. I read somewhere online that American Defense department extimated that by day 6 Russia had suffered between 400 and 500 deaths. If the figure for deaths is exagerated then the rest is probably too.

Putin is banking on dividing the world opinion. West and US allies versus the rest who have nothing to do with this conflict.

There cannot be a UNSC sanction.

If a large number of countries who are friendly to Russia and China and there a large number of them refuse to heed the Sanctions of US and allies and find alternate routes of having financial dealings with Russia, then US sanctions fall flat.

If russia capture Ukraine, they will control 30 per cent bof worlds food grain production.

The key Ukrainian port city of Mariupol was "near to a humanitarian catastrophe" on Wednesday after more than 15 hours of continuous bombardment by Russian forces, the city's deputy mayor told the BBC.

"The Russian army is working through all their weapons here - artillery, multiple rocket launch systems, airplanes, tactical rockets. They are trying to destroy the city," Serhiy Orlov said.

Mr Orlov said Russian forces were several kilometres from the city on all sides and had launched strikes on key infrastructure, cutting water and power supplies to parts of the city.

One densely populated residential district on the city's left bank had been "nearly totally destroyed", he said.

"We cannot count the number of victims there, but we believe at least hundreds of people are dead. We cannot go in to retrieve the bodies. My father lives there, I cannot reach him, I don't know if he is alive or dead."

Russian forces had targeted strikes against pump stations and electrical transformers, Mr Orlov said, and there were food shortages in parts of the city - raising fears of an approaching humanitarian crisis.

Mariupol is a key strategic target for Russia because seizing it would allow Russian-backed separatist forces in eastern Ukraine to join forces with troops in Crimea, the southern peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.

Ukraine's army has resisted Russian forces so far in key parts of the country but the increased aerial bombardment of cities has raised fears Russia is shifting tactics.

"The Ukrainian army is very brave and they will continue to defend the city but the style of the Russian army is like pirates - they do not fight with their army, they just destroy entire districts," Mr Orlov said.

"We believe in our Ukrainian army, but we are in a terrible situation."

A historic rare moment on this forum as well when Joshila Kingkhan Rana and Technician are on same page .

Apparently, both Pakistan and India have had the same stand in the latest UN meeting.

We are living in a rare meme timeline :yk

Ukrainians will have ample time to ponder as they are living the refugee life in upcoming times:

Should they have permitted the appointment of a Zionist clown as their "leader"?

Should they have trusted the Zionist-Anglosphere / AUKUS / NATO 's empty promises?

India and Pakistan both abstained from voting at the UN General Assembly where 140 countries out of 190 voted demanding Moscow immediately withdraw from Ukraine.

Superficially it may appear strange but both countries have voted in keeping with their national interests. India has obviously been a long standing ally of Russia and Pakistan has recently moved closer to Russia.

What is ironic is India's current stance on Russia -among other things- can be perceived as returning the favor for the many times Russia has vetoed any resolutions against India concerning Kashmir - which of course is detrimental to Pakistan's interests.

So why did Pakistan abstain from voting? -

Without going into too much detail - Pakistan is going to import gas and wheat from Russia after Imran Khan's recent visit to Russia.

When it comes to foreign policy decisions it is salutary to remember that countries are governed by their own national interests over principles.

Absolutely good news, storyboard for a future Bollywood production instead of the usual anti-Pak guff?

How a bunch of Pak and Indian students banded together to make their escape from the rampaging Russians to the western borders.

Common sense should prevail and both sides have to compromise or we are all toast. Putin looks ill and when a man has nothing to lose, he becomes dangerous.

Putin wants control of the shale gas reserves in the east and west of ukraine and a control over the natural gas reserves off ukraine's black sea coast. there is no compromise for him, he needs to control those resources to maintain russian monopoly over the natural gas trade in europe, and to not pay the royalties for the pipeline through ukraine.

his end objective is to subjugate ukraine and make it a russian satellite. he has done this before, in 2014 and in 2008 with georgia.

under the current modi adminstration, just about every institution in india has turned to shyte. but this should not distract from high praise for their pakistani counterparts.

Well it's true the ukranian people have been used by the west and the zionists including their Jewish comedian leader who is probably not even in kiev but is making propaganda videos for all his bravado let's see if he goes down last man standing when russians do capture kiev he probably isn't even there and shifted long time ago, the propaganda by the west has been disgusting along with the censorship and banning of an alternative voice its constant 24/7 brainwashing propaganda

the west will never help ukraine properly or even give them long term refuge they will live in East Europe since it comes under the first safe destination where the apply for refuge they have simply spilled their blood for nothing and being egged on to resist in a futile manner molotov cocktails etc.

will only lead to more destruction , the Russian troops have remarkably been very restrained eventhough they have been massacred in convoys , normally russians when it comes to war are brutal as we have seen when they have invaded muslim countries.

That just forces people like me to go online and find alternative access. The news the BBC and CNN are giving is pure propaganda too. You would Ukraine are winning the war judging by all the stories that they are showing. The reality on the ground is way different.

So much for freedom of speech. Now you will only hear one sided propaganda.

Thank god for social media. Atleast you can get raw bits and pieces of info from the actual people on the ground.

From 'Akhand Bharat' With Love: Hindu Sena Backs 'Akhand Russia' Attack On Ukraine

HinduSena2.jpg

Right-wing fringe group Hindu Sena seems to have picked the side it is going to support in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Hindu Sena activists put posters on a statue of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin in New Delhi’s Mandi House, supporting the country’s invasion of Ukraine and an “Akhand Russia”.

“Indian Hindus are with Putin and Russia in establishing the Soviet Union. Jai ho Akhand Russia. Jai Bharat,” the poster read.

According to Vishnu Gupta, the National President of Hindu Sena, Russia is an old ally of India that has stood by the country during difficult times in the past and it is time that New Delhi stands with them, during the invasion of Ukraine.

"We stand by Russia"
"We want to send a message that we stand by Russia, which has always stood by our side on the international stage. Even the US had not done this. This is a war that the US has forced Russia to undertake. We want the world to know that the Hindus of India stand with Russia and are even ready to fight the war along with them," Gupta told Indiatimes.

He also accused Ukraine of blackmailing India during the ongoing crisis by holding Indian students hostage, to make the country vote in their favour in the UNSC.

Gupta said that he has written to PM Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladamir Putin urging them to put their differences aside for the time being and come together along with China to counter the western powers.

"Akhand Russia"
He also draws parallels between Akhand Bharat and Akhand Russia and said that he hoped to see them reestablished soon.

"Before the British divided our country Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan were all part of Akhand Bharat. Similarly, Akhand Russia (Soviet Union) was broken up by the US. All these countries including Ukraine were once part of the USSR and they cannot be separated for a long. We dream of reestablishing the Akhand Bharat like it was in the days of Emperor Ashoka, thousands of years ago. Similarly, we support Russia's right to form USSR once again.

Gupta and his men who are diehard admirers of former US President Donald Trump used to host his birthday party in Delhi every year, with lavish celebrations.

They however do not share the same admiration for the current US President. In fact, Gupta was very clear who is to be blamed for the current crisis in Ukraine - it is Joe Biden.

"If Trump was the US President now, this war would not have happened in the first place. Like Trump said recently, this is not a war that Russia started, but was caused by Joe Biden," he said.

Neutral Finland, Sweden warm to idea of Nato membership in wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine

Through the Cold War and the decades since, nothing could persuade Finns and Swedes that they would be better off joining Nato — until now.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has profoundly changed Europe’s security outlook, including for Nordic neutrals Finland and Sweden, where support for joining Nato has surged to record levels.

A poll commissioned by Finnish broadcaster YLE this week showed that, for the first time, more than 50 per cent of Finns support joining the Western military alliance. In neighbouring Sweden, a similar poll showed those in favour of Nato membership outnumber those against it.

“The unthinkable might start to become thinkable,” tweeted former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, a proponent of Nato membership.

Neither country is going to join the alliance overnight. Support for Nato membership rises and falls, and there’s no clear majority for joining in their parliaments.

But the signs of change since Russia began its invasion last week are unmistakable.

The attack on Ukraine prompted both Finland and Sweden to break with their policy of not providing arms to countries at war by sending assault rifles and anti-tank weapons to Kyiv. For Sweden, it’s the first time offering military aid since 1939, when it assisted Finland against the Soviet Union.

Apparently sensing a shift among its Nordic neighbours, the Russian Foreign Ministry last week voiced concern about what it described as efforts by the United States and some of its allies to “drag” Finland and Sweden into Nato and warned that Moscow would be forced to take retaliatory measures if they joined the alliance.

The governments of Sweden and Finland retorted that they won’t let Moscow dictate their security policy.

“I want to be extremely clear: It is Sweden that itself and independently decides on our security policy line,” Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said.

Finland has a conflict-ridden history with Russia, with which it shares a 1,340-kilometre border. Finns have taken part in dozens of wars against their eastern neighbour, for centuries as part of the Swedish Kingdom, and as an independent nation during the world wars, including two fought with the Soviet Union from 1939-40 and 1941-44.

In the postwar period, however, Finland pursued pragmatic political and economic ties with Moscow, remaining militarily nonaligned and a neutral buffer between East and West.

Sweden has avoided military alliances for more than 200 years, choosing a path of peace after centuries of warfare with its neighbours.

Both countries put an end to traditional neutrality by joining the European Union in 1995 and deepening cooperation with Nato. However, a majority of people in both countries remained firmly against full membership in the alliance — until Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

The YLE poll showed 53pc were in favour of Finland joining Nato, with only 28pc against. The poll had an error margin of 2.5 percentage points and included 1,382 respondents interviewed from February 23 to 25. Russia’s invasion began on Feb 24.

“It’s a very significant shift,” said senior researcher Matti Pesu from the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. “We’ve had a situation in the past 25-30 years where Finns’ opinions on Nato have been very stable. It seems to now to have changed completely.”

While noting that it’s not possible to draw conclusions from a single poll, Pesu said no similar shift in public opinion occurred after Russia’s 2008 war with Georgia and the 2014 annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, “so this is an exception”.

In Sweden, a late February poll commissioned by the Swedish public broadcaster SVT found 41pc of Swedes supported Nato membership and 35pc opposed it, marking the first time that those in favour exceeded those against.

The Nordic duo, important partners for Nato in the Baltic Sea area where Russia has substantially increased its military manoeuvres in the past decade, has strongly stressed that it is up to them alone to decide whether to join the military alliance.

In his New Year’s speech, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto pointedly said that “Finland’s room to manoeuvre and freedom of choice also include the possibility of military alignment and of applying for Nato membership, should we ourselves so decide.”

Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg noted last week that for Helsinki and Stockholm “this is a question of self-determination and the sovereign right to choose your own path and then potentially in the future, also to apply for Nato.”

There are no set criteria for joining Nato, but aspiring candidates must meet certain political and other considerations. Many observers believe Finland and Sweden would qualify for fast-track entry into Nato without lengthy negotiations and membership could be a reality within months.

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said this week that her Social Democratic Party would discuss possible Nato membership with other parties but didn’t set a time frame. She said everyone agrees that the events of the past weeks have been a game-changer.

“Together we see that the security situation has changed remarkably since Russia attacked Ukraine. It is a fact that we have to acknowledge,” Marin said.

Ukraine invasion: President Zelenskyy says nearly 9,000 Russian soldiers have died - as Kherson mayor says city has fallen

Ukraine's president has claimed nearly 9,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the invasion of his country began a week ago.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy told invading forces to "go home" and warned: "Wherever they go, they will be destroyed."

In a video early on Thursday, he said: "They will not have calm here, they will not have food, they will not have one quiet moment.

"The occupiers will receive only one thing from Ukrainians: resistance. Fierce resistance. Such resistance that they will forever remember that we don't give up what is ours, that they will remember what a patriotic war is."

It comes as Russian troops reached the centre of Kherson amid conflicting claims over whether Moscow had captured its first major city.

Its mayor said invading forces were in control and that no Ukrainian troops were present, but the UK said the situation in the city of 280,000 was "unclear".

Meanwhile, a 40-mile-long convoy of Russian vehicles heading towards the capital Kyiv is said to have virtually ground to a halt.

It remains about 18 miles (30 km) from the centre of the city after being delayed by "staunch Ukrainian resistance, mechanical breakdown and congestion", according to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Invaders are 'confused children' not 'warriors'

Russian troops continue to face stiff resistance across Ukraine and have yet to overthrow the government in Kyiv, where the feared major assault has not yet begun.

In his video message, President Zelenskyy praised the fortitude of his fellow Ukrainians.

"We are a people who broke the enemy's plans in a week," he said.

"These plans had taken years to write - they are mean, with hatred for our country, for our people."

The president said Russian soldiers were "not warriors of a superpower" but "confused children who have been used".

"Ukraine doesn't want to be covered by the dead bodies of soldiers," he added.

"Go home. With your whole army. Tell your officers that you want to live, that you don't want to die but to live.

"We need to stop the war and restore peace as soon as possible."

Elsewhere in Ukraine, attacks have been continuing on the second-largest city of Kharkiv and Chernihiv in the north but the UK's MoD said they remain in government hands.

The port city of Mariupol is surrounded by Russian forces after coming under heavy shelling in recent days but is also still under Ukrainian control, officials said on Thursday.

Mayor Vadym Boychenko said the barrage means "we cannot even take the wounded from the streets, from houses and apartments", while water and electricity are reported to be out in the city.

Pro-Moscow rebels have threatened to launch targeted strikes there unless government forces surrender.

In Kyiv, the central rail station was rocked by an explosion on Wednesday evening as thousands of civilians were trying to flee.

It was caused by the wreckage of a shot-down Russian cruise missile hitting a heating pipe, according to Ukraine's interior ministry. There were no reports of casualties.

Several loud explosions were also reported in Kyiv in the early hours, though the target of the blasts remains unclear

A major assault on the city of three million was believed to be imminent but appears to have been delayed after the nearby Russian convoy stalled.

Food and fuel shortages, as well as Ukrainian resistance, has plagued the huge line of military vehicles, according to a US defence official, echoing the UK assessment.

British diplomatic efforts continue later with Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in Lithuania to meet foreign ministers from that country, as well as from Estonia and Latvia.

Ms Truss will also meet UK military personnel from the Army Air Corps and the RAF's 18 Squadron, who are deployed in the country.

If 9000 troops have died where are all the bodies

Why isn't the un providing a humanitarian International task force to collect all these bodies and prisoners and hand them over.

There's no way the local morgue could accommodate such amount of human bodies remains so where are they rotting on streets mass graves ?

The propaganda is similar to that used in Afghanistan first by the Ghani govt and then by the Panjshir rebels, all smoke and mirrors

Vladimir Putin wants to seize all of Ukraine and "worse is to come" during the conflict, the French president has warned.

Emmanuel Macron held talks with Mr Putin over the phone this afternoon in a bid to ease tensions between Russia and the West.

The pair spoke for 90 minutes, with Mr Putin telling Mr Macron the war in Ukraine is "going according to plan", a French official said.

According to French officials, Mr Macron told the Russian leader that he was making a "major mistake" in Ukraine, adding: "You are lying to yourself".

The official at the French Elysee presidential palace said Mr Putin told Mr Macron the invasion will continue "until the end" unless negotiations meet his terms.

These, Mr Putin said, must centre on the "neutralisation and disarmament of Ukraine" - with the president saying he would attain the goal by military means, if not by political and diplomatic means.

A source described the tone of the phone call as "pessimistic" and "not-so-friendly".

Putin 'punishing his own country'

Mr Putin continues to maintain Russia is seeking to demilitarise and "denazify" Ukraine - to which Mr Macron reportedly replied that "Ukraine was not the Nazi regime and that his vision of Ukraine was not confronting reality".

He warned Mr Putin his actions would "punish his own country".

Following the call, Mr Macron believes "worse is to come" in the unfolding humanitarian crisis and that Mr Putin wants to seize the entire country, according to an aide.

One million refugees have fled the country - and some mothers are leaving their children at the border, UNHCR says
Key developments:

• Ukraine says nearly 9,000 Russian soldiers have been killed - as first major city 'falls' to invaders
• One million people have now fled Ukraine
• Paralympic bosses ban Russian and Belarusian athletes
• Five children among those detained in Moscow for laying flowers at Ukraine embassy
• Oligarchs have megayachts seized by France and Germany

Despite evidence of civilian casualties, Mr Putin also called the accusations that his military had attacked residential areas part of an "anti-Russian disinformation campaign" and insisted the army only used weapons to destroy military infrastructure.

Ukraine has said 2,000 civilians have died since the start of the invasion last week.

'Ukraine will not surrender'

Mr Macron expressed his concern for citizens and the need for a humanitarian corridor and conditions. Mr Putin acknowledged but gave no details on what he was willing to do.

Following the call, Mr Macron called Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and relayed that Russia was determined to pursue a military operation to the very end.

Hahahahhaha. So 9000 Russians have died, more than the reported "blond hair blued eyed" Ukrainians, and the Ukrainian comedian leader claims Russia is commiting genocide in Ukraine.

Pass me the clown shoes.

Russia will not be able to absorb this loss for atleast 10 years, Russia united West which was disintegrating as a group under Trump’s leadership!

The sanctions have been much more stricter than expected, ripples across Scandinavian countries that were never giving into NATO and now majority are favoring it.

China did well not to invade Taiwan right now.

China and India are having the toughest time with this diplomatically although China will get much cheaper gas now lol.

Either both were clueless or ridiculously underestimated Putin.

The EU has agreed to grant temporary residence to Ukrainians fleeing the war, for up to three years.

EU ministers gave the plans the green light at a meeting in Brussels today.

The bloc's triggered a mechanism - that’s never been used before - to allow Ukrainian nationals and their families the right to work, education and welfare.

The EU says that those who held long-term residence or refugee status in Ukraine would also be covered - either by the directive or national rules. And that temporary workers or students, who aren't eligible, would be helped to get home.

Earlier reports from Hungary suggested the government there did not support the plans.

However the Commission described today's decision as "unanimous", after some modifications.

Ukraine and Russia have agreed to temporary, local ceasefires to allow the evacuation of civilians as well as aid deliveries via safe corridors.

Russian and Ukrainian negotiators have however made limited progress elsewhere in their discussions, only agreeing on the need for humanitarian corridors for civilians.

A senior Ukrainian official said that the talks had not led to the results Kyiv was hoping for.

They came as Russian President Vladimir Putin defended the invasion of Ukraine, saying it was "going to plan".

But a humanitarian crisis has been growing in Ukrainian cities under intense Russian bombardment.

Mr Putin also spoke by phone for 90 minutes to French President Emmanuel Macron.

An aide to Mr Macron told reporters the French president expected that the worst was still to come, after Mr Putin told him Russia would continue its campaign in Ukraine until it had fulfilled its goals.

Mr Macron told his Russian counterpart the invasion was a serious mistake, and that his views did not correspond with reality.

At talks from an undisclosed location, the second such round during this week, Russian and Ukrainian delegates agreed to possible temporary ceasefires.

But the truces would only be in places where humanitarian corridors were being set up and for the duration of civilian evacuations, Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak said.

"To our great regret, we did not get the results we were counting on," he added.

good luck getting any upgrades on those sukhois or pretty much any of the battle tech bought from the russians.

lesson for future indian administrations: align yourselves with democratic powers of the west, or be prepared to be royally embarrassed when you next do sabre rattling against your neighbors.

this is fantastic news. and coming at the heels of the massive refugee influx from africa and asian countries, this is a good step towards demonstrating to united states and the rest of the world that western europe can rehabilitate itself from its imperial and colonial past.

Lol India doesn't need to do Sukhoi upgrades. TEJAS is maturing well and they have the option for more Rafales which is better than any fighter jet in the Russia or any Asian region...

India will keep buying what it needs from Russia. No sanction is going to stop that.

If some guy in Washington or london or Brussels is thinking that India will compromise its security for some sanctions they have miscalculated.

Yeah, we're both in geopolitical trouble going forward.

Not sure if increasing our tilt to the Western camp is feasible.

What happened in Ukraine overnight?

Dawn is breaking on the ninth day of warfare in Ukraine.

Fighting has continued to intensify in key cities, while more than a million people have fled to neighbouring countries in the fastest exodus of refugees this century.

If you're just joining us this morning, here's what happened overnight:

A fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, has been extinguished. The facility was struck by "continuous enemy shelling" in the early hours;

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of "nuclear terror", and earlier warned an explosion at the plant could spark the "evacuation of Europe";

Shelling cut off power and water supplies in a key city on the Black Sea coast, Mariupol. Officials in the besieged city say: "We are being destroyed";

Ukraine says it has reached "joint understanding" with Russia on evacuating civilians - with possible temporary ceasefire - during peace talks;

One million Ukrainian refugees have fled to neighbouring countries since the start of the war with Russia. The UN says this number is likely to reach four million;

Russia says it has "full control" of the southern port city Kherson - the first major area to fall since the invasion began. Ukraine has contested this claim.

India will keep buying what it needs from Russia. No sanction is going to stop that.

If some guy in Washington or london or Brussels is thinking that India will compromise its security for some sanctions they have miscalculated.

This is only possible if Russia agrees to accept payments in Rupee/Rubble. Even then, doing so will irk the west enough to ***** us in many other places under CAATSA. Just take the sample of s-400 acquisition. Took forever and a Chinese invasion to settle that deal with a lot of backdoor diplomacy.

So what's the solution? Say tata to Russia and head firmly in the devious USA camp?

S 400 was ordered and paid for. It got delivered on time. Nothing to do with chinese incursion.

There are other currencies that can be used, Chinese remnibi, Dinars etc. Many countries have not put sanctions on Russia.

France/Israel/USA/indigenize.
New acquisitions from Russia have to be rationalized.
Spares/maintenance of current equipment need to be sourced locally through offsets.

CAATSA wont be placed on the Indians, especially now because Americans have been very hesitant to take on Russia because of their nuclear arsenal.

Americans are treaty bound to defend Taiwan if there was an aggression like what Putin is doing to Ukraine, under that circumstance the Americans will need all the support they can get and India is their most important ally to counter China. Indian's are free from any worries on CAATSA, all that will be there are threats but no actions from the Americans on India.

However the real issue would be; if Americans do go to a war with China over Taiwan, Indians wont be able to stay neutral, they most likely will be forced to be involved in the conflict with the Americans...

What about CAATSA? Get sanctioned and lose business with USA/west?

CAATSA is American law. Are we supposed to govern ourselves as per American laws? We are not a US colony. Whats the difference between US and Russia?

Saudis also bought S 400. Sanction them as well?

Both want to coerce other countries into toeing their line, except that Russia doesn't give sermons on democracy and freedom and sovereignty.

Countries are not going to keep their security in suspension for US laws.

Ukraine invasion: Europe's biggest nuclear power plant under attack from Russian troops

Europe's biggest nuclear power plant has been shelled by Russian forces in Ukraine - with a fire breaking out.

The attack on the southeastern city of Energodar and its Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant unfolded as the invasion entered its second week.

Local politicians initially said that firefighters were unable to get close to the scene because they were being shot at - but a team of 40 people and 10 units have now extinguished the blaze which was at a training building.

Ukrainian officials have said there is a "real threat of nuclear danger", with foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba warning: "If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl."

The International Atomic Energy Agency has said that the fire has not affected essential equipment or caused radiation levels to change.

US officials have also stressed that reactors at Zaporizhzhia power station are protected by robust containment measures, and are now being safely shut down.

A video on the plant's YouTube channel appears to show large explosions at the power station.

• Russian forces continue to claim control of the southern port city of Kherson
• Mariupol, the main port on the Sea of Azov, remains surrounded by Russian forces and under heavy bombardment

You underestimate the long term thinking of the west and it's major powers. The drive against Russia began long before Trump even came to power, there were rumours released about him being backed by Russian media trolls prior to his win if you look at the timeline.

But you are right about supposedly neutral Scandinavian countries, their non-alignment has not withstood the test very long, they quickly fell in line with NATO. Countries like India and Pakistan might face a more difficult choice due to their closer proximity to Russia, but they will probably have to make one soon as well. China is already under US crosshairs, I don't think there is any way back for them unless they want to give up any dreams of becoming a superpower.

US senator Lindsey Graham calls for Putin's assassination

Senior US senator Lindsey Graham called for “somebody in Russia” to assassinate President Vladimir Putin after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in a televised interview on Thursday evening.

“How does this end? Somebody in Russia has to step up to the plate... and take this guy out,” the senator told conservative Fox News TV host Sean Hannity.

He repeated the call later in a series of tweets, saying “the only people who can fix this are the Russian people.”

“Is there a Brutus in Russia?” asked the senator, referring to one of Roman ruler Julius Caesar's assassins.

The former presidential candidate also wondered if “a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg” existed in the Russian military, alluding to the German officer whose bomb failed to kill Adolf Hitler in 1944.

“You would be doing your country — and the world — a great service,” he added.

The senator, who has served in Congress for over twenty years and has at times been a close ally to former president Donald Trump, had earlier in the day introduced a resolution condemning the Russian president and his military commanders for committing “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity”.

Ukraine says at least 350 civilians have been killed since Putin launched the invasion last week, and over 1 million have fled the country.

Moscow claims it does not target civilian areas, despite widespread evidence to the contrary.

Zelenskyy: Nuclear power plant strike could have had impact of 'six Chernobyls'

More from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who earlier gave a news briefing in the aftermath of Russian attacks on a nuclear power plant.

He said the Russian missile strike on the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant could have had the impact of "six Chernobyls".

Mr Zelenskyy added: "We survived the night that could have stopped the course of history - history of Ukraine, history of Europe."

The Ukrainian leader then described the act of bombing the nuclear power plant as "terror on an unheard-of level".

He said then said to the people of Russia: "How is this even possible? Didn't we fight the consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe together in 1986?"

Russia awaiting Ukrainian response to peace talks - Kremlin

The Kremlin has claimed it is waiting for a response from Ukraine following yesterday's second round of peace talks.

Moscow said it had told Ukraine "how we see the solution" to the ongoing war, adding that what happens next would depend on Ukraine.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov added that no documents had been agreed with Kyiv.

Talks took place in Belarus, which has been assisting the Kremlin's invasion of its neighbour, and were led by Russian President Vladimir Putin's adviser Vladimir Medinsky.

It was reported afterwards that Russia had agreed the need for "humanitarian corridors" in Ukraine for the evacuation of civilians and arrival of aid, but there is still no sign of a ceasefire.

More outright lies from the western media.

The nuclear power plant has been in Russian control for years. It was attacked by Ukranians who as a tactic to scare the world in order to get more help.

Only recently Biden mistook Ukrainians for Iranians at his State of the Union Speech.

Pathetic.

Sainsbury's, Aldi, Asda and Waitrose have all announced they will axe Russian products amid the war in Ukraine.

Sainsbury's will remove Russian Standard vodka and Karpayskiye black sunflower seeds from its shelves.

Waitrose, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership, will no longer sell Russian vodka either.

Asda's announcement will apply to about 100 products - mostly spirits, but also includes fish and some sweets.

The supermarkets follow moves from the likes of Morrisons and Co-op, which said on Thursday that they would withdraw Russian-made vodka from sale.

This mass boycott of everything even modestly related to Russian-ness seems to be getting a bit out of hand now.

Dockers in Kent have refused to unload two tankers of Russian gas, forcing them to go elsewhere, a union has said.

The Boris Vilkitsky and Fedor Litke have been diverted from the Isle of Grain, the largest terminal in Europe for importing liquefied natural gas.

Unison head of energy Matt Lay said staff were "determined to support the Ukrainian people and uphold the sanctions imposed against Russia".

However, there are concerns over a loophole in the current sanctions.

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced on Tuesday that the UK had become the first country to pass a law banning ships with "any Russian connection" from entering its ports.

Mr Lay said: "Sadly, this doesn't seem to be the case."

"The Department for Transport rules only appear to cover the ownership and operators of vessels, not the cargo."

Europe pays Russia $1billion a day(energy). Yet it boycotts cats and vodka lol.

If Russia turns off the gas tap to Europe. This would send the western economy into freefall. They will not need to boycott because they simply wont be able to afford anything.
