Russia invades Ukraine

Since last week's invasion, there has been a global cultural and sporting backlash against Russia. But do these bans matter to Russians who are now considering their own future as Western air spaces close down, their currency slumps and curbs intensify on free press?

Its athletes were banned from the Beijing Winter Paralympics the day before the games got under way and Russia's footballers won't be playing Poland this month. Musicians from around the world are calling off planned events in Russia.

"It's hard to imagine how long it will take Russia to be considered a part of the world cultural landscape again," Lena, a young woman who works in Moscow, told the BBC.

Lena asked for her identity to be protected - the names of some other interviewees in this article have been changed too.

It's impossible to support the illusion of normality while the human tragedy unfolds in Ukraine," Lena said.

"Certainly, moaning about isolation and economic disasters is nothing compared to what the poor people of Ukraine are experiencing every day now, and we all feel absolutely shattered that helping them is treason here."

It's dangerous to speak out in Russia - thousands of protesters against the war have been detained, while the country's leadership has pressed on with the assault.

'Everything will be different'

Russia's leaders have so far defied the unprecedented wave of sanctions aimed at devastating its economy if it doesn't change course.

Cutting sporting and cultural ties means further pain, and revives bitter memories of decades of Cold War division.

In sport the country has been almost universally ostracised. Its absence from the Beijing Winter Games will be painfully apparent after a last-ditch U-turn by officials.

Russia's athletes have also been banned from this year's world championships and its figure skaters, an event in which the country excels, have been barred from all competitions.

The International Judo Federation made a point of suspending Russia's leader Vladimir Putin, a keen judoka, as its honorary president.

Four years after hosting the World Cup, Russian football clubs and national teams have been suspended from all international competitions. Spartak Moscow, one of Russia's leading clubs, has been thrown out of the Europa League.

Ultimately, though, the people the BBC spoke to said these now felt almost like a distraction.
Andrey (name changed), who has a club season ticket, says "it doesn't matter" in the bigger picture.

"Football, like everything else, is going to be different now. It will be part of our new life which we can't even imagine," he says.

"And the main thing is that no-one asked us if we want this new life. What will it be like? It's all very frightening. Of course, it's nothing compared to what people are feeling in Ukraine."

He says "humdrum problems" like boycotts "are the least of our concerns".

"The whole structure of life is changing now, from TV shows to telephones and cars. I don't see the point in trying to guess how it's going to change."

In recent years Russians have become used to seeing Western performers in their country, a huge shift from Soviet times when travel to and from the country was difficult.

But many foreign performers have now put on hold or cancelled gigs, festivals and shows in Russia to express horror at what's happening.

Anyone wanting to catch the Russian leg of tours by Eric Clapton, Iggy Pop or Louis Tomlinson faces being disappointed.

They've joined a growing list of stars - the Killers, Imagine Dragons, Green Day, Franz Ferdinand are some of the others - who've cancelled shows in Russia or put them on hold in protest at the war.
Lena says many Russian acts don't want to entertain "in these horrible times" either. The day after the invasion, singer Valery Meladze, comedian Danila Poperechny and a host of other celebrities appealed in a video for it to end.

Over the past week, Russia's entertainment world has been turned upside down.

Moscow's Bol festival, where Nick Cave was among those due to headline in June, is one event that won't be taking place.
"I organised conferences and showcase festivals with musicians from all over the world and we discovered loads of new bands. During the pandemic we tried to stay cheerful," the festival's co-founder Stepan Kazaryan posted on Facebook.

"Now I have a one-way ticket and nothing else. Nothing but shame for what certain people with the same passport as me have done to our closest neighbours. We'll never, ever be able to redeem ourselves."

Cinema fans and those using online streaming services are also affected amid the backlash over the invasion. Global film and TV giants like Disney, Warner Bros, Sony and Paramount have paused or cancelled planned releases in Russia.

Russia has not even opened their stock market, clearly they didn’t anticipate the epic sanctions West has launched against them, whatever be it, West is still economically superior for now.

Russian oligarchs who amassed wealth and kept Putin all powerful are going to be seriously angry, irrespective opportunities for other countries, unfortunate for average Russian and Ukrainians.

Thr western world has demonstrated to any potential challengers how quickly they can be set back 50 years without them having to drop a bomb.

Even if Putin takes Ukraine and suppresses the perceived NATO threat, the Russian people will be wondering what the point of it all was.

In the long term Russia will gain much much more. The waters around Crimea have gas reserves of over 1 trillion cubic meters. Currently Europe is paying $1billion dollars a day to Russia for energy.

Russia still has this ace card, turn of the energy to Europe, the economic collapse of the west and the collapse of the dollar will be set into motion. Europeans dont understand this, otherwise wouldnt be cheerleading any conflict against Russia.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticised NATO for failing to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine.

In a strongly worded, emotional speech, the president told the alliance: "Starting from today everyone who dies will die because of you as well, because of your weakness, because of your disunity."

Mr Zelenskyy also claimed that the absence of a no-fly zone has effectively "given the green light for the bombardment of Ukrainian cities and villages".

NATO has been facing fresh calls to enforce a no-fly zone after Russian troops launched a "dangerous" attack on Europe's largest nuclear power plant - but leaders ruled out the introduction of such measures at a summit on Friday.

The alliance's secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, fears it would elevate the risk of a wider war in Europe as NATO planes would have to shoot down Russian aircraft.

In other developments:

• Large explosions were reported in Chernihiv in the early hours of this morning as Russia pressed on with its assault on the Ukrainian city
• Mr Zelenskyy is due to talk to US senators on a video conference call later today
• The US embassy in Ukraine has described Russia's assault on Europe's biggest nuclear power plant as a "war crime"
• Russia has blocked Facebook and Twitter, and Washington says it is "deeply concerned" the move aims to stop Russian citizens getting information
• The latest UN figures for those displaced abroad from Ukraine stand at over 1.2 million people

Russian controlled areas and the sites of Ukraine's four nuclear power plants.
NATO summit was 'weak and lost', Zelenskyy says

In a video message released on Friday night, Mr Zelenskyy suggested that the lack of a no-fly zone shows not all NATO members "consider the fight for the freedom of Europe its main priority".

Describing Friday's summit as "weak" and "lost", he added: "For nine days we've seen a harsh war. Our cities are being destroyed, our people and children, residential areas, churches, schools are being shot. Everything that provides normal people's life is being shot."

Mr Stoltenberg says NATO is increasing support for Ukraine, but warned stepping in directly could make the situation even worse.

He said: "We have a responsibility... to prevent this war from escalating beyond Ukraine because that would be even more dangerous, more devastating and would cause even more human suffering."

Boris Johnson has also suggested that a no-fly zone isn't a viable option, with the prime minister warning: "The UK would be engaged in shooting down Russian planes... that's not something we can do."

The RAF's former commander of operations has criticised Western leaders for opposing a no-fly zone.

Former Air Marshal Greg Bagwell said he completely recognised "all the risks" such action brings, but said taking the option off the table "just makes the job of the bad guy easier".

He told the PA news agency that NATO doesn't necessarily have to be the organisation that enforces a no-fly zone.

Air Marshal Bagwell said: "I was disappointed to see that everybody immediately turned this into NATO versus Russia.

"Most no-fly zones I'm aware of, and I've flown on, have been under UN Security Council mandates or resolutions."

He added: "The reason why I think it has got to be UN is I think it needs that universal mandate... this is not a binary fight between [Vladimir Putin] and NATO. This is him versus the world."

The former RAF commander also said that the terms of a no-fly zone should be outlined publicly and made "crystal clear" - including that any Russian aircraft, flying in Ukrainian airspace, would be considered hostile and shot down.

This would allow humanitarian aid to be safely flown into Ukraine.

Demonstrations condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine have taken place in cities across the continent - Paris, Prague, Lyon and Frankfurt among them.

Mr Zelenskyy addressed the protesters in a video, where he asked crowds not to be silent about what was happening in his country.

Speaking via a translator, he said: "Don't turn a blind eye on this. Come out and support Ukraine as much as you can. If we fall, you will fall.

"And if we win, and I'm sure we'll win, this will be the victory of the whole democratic world, this will be the victory of our freedom, this will be the victory of light over darkness, of freedom over slavery.

"And if we win, we will become as blossoming as Europe. And Europe will be flourishing more than ever.

"All of you are Ukrainians today, thank you for this."

I don't think that the western world or Russia has an appetite for further escalation.

Russia has gas so doesn't want to antagonise its biggest customer.

The west needs the gas but will start to accelerate very quickly towards other energy sources.

We are entering a cold war era where only the most essential business transactions will take place.

What has happened so far today?

Today marks the tenth day of warfare in Ukraine.

Fighting continued overnight in key settlements, with British intelligence saying this morning it is "highly likely" four Ukrainian cities are surrounded by Russian troops.

If you're just joining us this lunchtime, here's the latest:

Ukraine says Russian soldiers are not observing an agreed temporary ceasefire in two Ukrainian cities;
This was established earlier today to allow civilians in Mariupol and Volnovakha in southern Ukraine to flee;
Mariupol city council said in the last few hours that shelling has continued in the port city, which is understood to be encircled by Moscow;
British intelligence says Russia is "highly likely" to have surrounded three other cities: Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Sumy;
The UN Refugee Agency says the number of Ukrainians who have fled to neighbouring countries is likely to reach 1.5 million shortly;
Ukrainians are protesting the Russian occupation of Kherson in southern Ukraine. The city was seized by Moscow earlier this week;
The Foreign Office has urged British nationals to consider leaving Russia "by remaining commercial routes".

Potentially it could happen but it will not be during our lifetimes.

The world will continue to look west for the foreseeable future.

If China leads the way into the next era, we could be looking at a number of emerging mixed economies which have some basis in capital investment and entrepreneurship, but with limits applied by significant state control to theoretically achieve economic equality in the longer term, a system pioneered by Deng Xiaoping and continued by President XI otherwise known as “socialism with Chinese characteristics”.

I don't think China will promote their philosophy in other countries. They will just suck the life out of them and ensure China is first.

The fall of Kyiv is imminent. We ( west + nato) have royally screwed the Ukranians here.

We MUST enforce a no fly zone or agree to halt nato expansion.

This current situation is just resulting in the death of innocents.

NATO may be united but they have shown the world they are toothless militarily against Russia. If this is the case then why would anyone want to spend 2% of GDP on defence just to join a defence force that is only good for bombing Muslim shepherds.

In the event of a NATO no fly zone, there is genuine concern about a nuclear war breaking out. In this case there would be no winners. Everyone would lose.

Then we must bring Russia to the negotiation table and come to an agreement with Putin. He must also be looking for a way out of this.

Otherwise we are just singing the death certificates of innocent Ukranian civilians. We pushed them into this mess and have done nothing tangible to ease their plight.

I said this two days ago. All the rah rah news reporting on heroic resistance of the Ukranians is fine for British consumption, but no one from the west will dare to get involved directly, so once the devastation and bodies pile up, it will be only us doing the rah rahs safely behind our television screens, the Ukranians themselves will get mown down like cattle.

If there was a stupid decision to go to war then this it. 1000s innocent dead, Russia to become a pariah for decades and The Russian economy is likely contract by 10% this year and more in the coming years. Half of The much vaunted reserves have become untouchable and Russia has United a previously fractious Europe after Brexit.

I just hope that comedian zelensky doesn't do a runner , and put his money where his mouth is and dies on his sword

He could have easily averted this disaster by agreeing ukraines neutrality and foregoing any eu nato aspirations and stopping the conflict in Donbass and persecution of russian speakers.

All the arrogance shown by Zelensky is causing more damage to his Nation. It's obviously he is being used as a Puppet to invite more destruction to the people and country he is leading.

Do you think that would have been enough. I am not so sure. In his speech on Feb 25th Putin said that Ukraine doesn't have the right of existence and essentially its part of Russia.

Do you want the people of Ukraine to surrender

Which is why the world needs an alternate system and i suspect this will be the beginning.

You will be thanking your gods for that ability to sanction and isolate an aggressor when the Chinese juggernauts steamrolls towards New Delhi and all your machismo and bravado will have evacuated explosively from the rear end. If the ongoing events involved india and china, I assure you, we would not have been able to put up half the resistance the Ukrainians are putting up since thy aligned themselves with democratic institutions.

I don't think China will promote their philosophy in other countries. They will just suck the life out of them and ensure China is first.
That’s an accurate assessment. The Chinese powers are not interested in some sort of hegemonic power. They are in it for enriching their own state and there are strong nativist, tribalism to their approach. Which is why they don’t actually offer grants or direct investments or even loans that are unsecured. They understand that to own a country, it’s much easier done by owning its debt than by military might. They do that in Africa, they do that with Sri Lanka, with Pakistan, with South America and soon enough, with Eastern Europe.

All the arrogance shown by Zelensky is causing more damage to his Nation. It's obviously he is being used as a Puppet to invite more destruction to the people and country he is leading.

He is just a puppet, former actor who is doing the bidding of Nato, not the Ukrainian people.

Hopefully Russia will now be firmer to end this conflict quickly.

It's true. Comedian president had 8 years to declare neutrality, now he is begging NATO to help him out, while the circus town have fled and he's gone into hiding.

Let it be a lesson to this clown, NATO/West cannot be trusted.

He should start telling jokes, maybe NATO will laugh at him in pity.

Already told his biggest joke in his life, when he suggested Ukraine will defeat Russia.

Other jokes include -

Our people will fight - Thousands of men run out of Ukraine.

Putin is scared of me - I dont bite - Putin stops attacks to laugh for an hour.

The comedian is tasting defeat. He thought NATO will back his plight to preserve the ‘blonde hair blue eye’ Ukrainians, but little did he know, the jokes on him.

Nobody cared about Ukrainians in then last 70 odd years, why should we now? Ahhh yes, because the Zionist influenced MSM say so.

To think we have freedom of thought in the West when the MSM dictate the views of the sheeple/masses.

Is your world view shaped by Jews vs Muslim, or are you reading some articles from Sputnik? How might someone with more than a functioning brain cell argue that a democratically elected leader, who rose to power following a bloody and extremely destructive civil unrest and whose election was quickly followed by an invasion and occupation of his country, is somehow a puppet?

Like where does your rationality and credulity stop and just native tribalism take over? Or are you just misinformed? You add nothing to this discussion and trivialize death of civilians. I am astonished the moderators permit you to spew nonsense unchecked. How old are you? I have seen you around here for a while so I am guessing 20 something, and if so how can you possibly be this pigeonholed in your world view? Do you not get out much?

Why does it so happen that this democratically elected president follows exactly how the west would have dreamt? Zelensky is as much as western puppet as the previous one was for Russia. No one is a saint here. In my opinion, the west/nato is a bigger evil here. Forcing/instigating this conflict between Ukraine & Russia and watching from the sidelines.

I am done engaging with you dumb comments on this thread. Believe whatever you want.

The last couple of days the Russians have looked like a bunch of amateurs. I don’t know how many of these claims are true but they have lost 5 planes and 4 helicopters and numerous vehicles.

Mind you all I have access to is western media since they have shut down RT.

What is the reporting like BBC around the world.

The West did not force this.

The Ukranian people, especially in the west, over the last decade have shown a clear interest in joining the EU. They believe their economy will be strengthened by aligning with the EU than with Russia.

Every sovereign country has the right to choose with whom does it align. The people voted for him, because his policy was to align with the EU. Joining the NATO was not even being considered by NATO themselves. It was mostly an economic alignment with the EU as the main step.

Now, people here having wet dreams about Russia destroying the EU need to come to reality. Just by some sanctions, EU are destroying the Russian economy. The Russian people will start seeing the results of this soon.

Now, people here are gloating that Russia can stop the supply of gas to the EU. As of now, Oil and Gas is the biggest and main export of Russia, which is somewhat keeping its economy floating. If Russia decides to stop supplying oil and gas to EU, its economy will be in ruin within a few months ad will not be able to wage the war. At least, in the current scenario, things will be bad, but the decline is much slower than compared with no oil and gas.

And as for what EU will do without Russian Oil and Gas. Firstly, US and Norway will increase the production to support their allies. Of course, the prices will be much higher, which increase the financial burden and the inflation will get higher. But, the EU will manage. It will affect the economy, but not as bad as Russia.

And what I find the funniest, is that the people who are blindly supporting Putin, and having wet dreams of Russian cutting European Oil and Gas, are the ones based out of the UK. The UK will be the worst affected of all the countries in Europe. Its simply because Norway will focus and divert its supplies from the UK to the EU. That's because as part of EEA, Norway is much closer to the EU than to the UK. UK, which is already suffering from energy price inflation, will have another huge increase. These people voicing their support for Putin will suffer the most.

People really need to start understanding economics and political relation, rather than seeing everything through Jew vs Muslim point of view.

A second attempt to evacuate civilians from Mariupol has failed, with both sides once again blaming each other for breaking the ceasefire.

After the first failed evacuation yesterday, Maxim, a 27-year-old IT developer who is caring for his grandparents in their sixth-floor apartment, told the BBC the day began with hope and ended in desperation:

"As fast as I could, I packed four bags for me and my grandparents with warm clothes and food and all of our remaining water and I packed them into my car.

"Right when I was ready to drive, the shelling started again. I heard explosions near to us. I carried everything back upstairs as fast as I could to the apartment. From there, I could see smoke rising from the city and smoke rising from the highway to Zaporizhzhia, where people were supposed to escape.

"Many people came into the city centre because they heard there was a ceasefire and buses to take them out and to flee the shelling there. Then they could not get back to their shelters when it started again.

"So we have taken many people into the apartment. They are from the left side of the city, they say it is destroyed. All the houses are burning and no one can put out the fires. There are many dead bodies lying in the streets and no one can carry them

"We have run out of bottled water and we are down to the water that I filled in the bath before the taps went off. The gas is the only thing still working, we can use it to boil the bath water to drink.

"Today the police opened the stores and told people to take everything because the people here have no food and drink. Our neighbours manged to take some candy, some fish and some fizzy drinks.

"The ceasefire was a lie, one side never planned to stop firing. If they say there is [another ceasefire] we will have to try go but we don’t know if it will be real. Maybe now we are better to hide."

The newbies in this world are reliant on MSM opinions and will never learn to think for themselves.

Russia has always been the 'enemy' since post World War 2 according to the West.

What these liberals fail to mention is Putin was trying to negotiate with NATO for over decades, but alas the West/NATO refused and the only desis supporting NATO/West are the ones who didn't get their VISAs.

Which is precisely why I think the sanctions are a mistake. My gas bill this year is going to double, and it's a lot of money to start with. I don't see why I should be paying for Ukraine's war with Russia. It's not our problem. You should be paying it, wherever you are as you support the sanctions.

Macron tells Putin he must ensure Ukraine's nuclear sites are protected

French President Emmanual Macron urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to ensure the protection and security of Ukraine's nuclear sites.

An official from Mr Macron's office said the French president urged Mr Putin to end Russia's military operations in Ukraine during a phone call today that lasted nearly two hours.

Mr Putin told Mr Macron he agreed to talks between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ukraine and Russia.

Mr Macron has stayed in regular contact with Mr Putin, who earlier told Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan his campaign was going to plan and would not stop until Kyiv stopped fighting.

Earlier this week, Russia attacked Europe's largest nuclear power plant in the southeastern city of Enerhodar, prompting the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, to warn at an emergency UN Security Council meeting that the assault reflected a "dangerous new escalation" and could easily have led to disaster.

China has warned the US against any moves that "add fuel to the flames" in Ukraine as Russia continued its attack for the 11th day.

The country's foreign minister Wang Yi has urged negotiations to resolve the immediate crisis and called on the West to take account of Moscow's concerns about NATO expansion.

But in response, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the world is watching to see which nations stand up for the principles of freedom and sovereignty in the face of Kremlin aggression.

The exchange came in a phone call between the pair on Saturday.

China has broken with the US, Europe and other nations that have imposed sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

Beijing says while the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations should be respected, sanctions create new issues and disrupt the process of political settlement.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss ongoing efforts to impose economic costs on Russia and to speed-up US military, humanitarian and economic assistance to Ukraine.

The White House said the pair also discussed talks between Russia and Ukraine during the more than 30-minute call early on Sunday in Ukraine, but provided no additional details.

Mr Zelenskyy said on Twitter the two presidents discussed security, financial support for Ukraine and the continuation of sanctions against Russia.

Earlier, he thanked SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk for giving Ukraine access to his company's satellite-internet system, Starlink.

"I'm grateful to him for supporting Ukraine with words and deeds," Mr Zelensky said in a tweet.

"Next week we will receive another batch of Starlink systems for destroyed cities."

He joked that they discussed possible space projects, which he would talk about "after the war".

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko on Saturday showed off a shipment of the Starlink systems that had arrived in the capital city.

He said Starlink would help secure the work of critical infrastructure and the defence of the city.

But several large Ukrainian cities remained without internet or phone connection after being shelled by Russian troops.

One also needs to look at the economic cost on Europe which is hitting the public and industry .
Rising energy prices due to this war

Italy, which uses gas to generate 40% of its electricity and imports more than 90% of its gas, mostly from Russia, has looked to Algeria and Azerbaijan for alternative supplies.

German politicians have talked about cancelling plans to shut down nuclear power plants and ramping up electricity production from coal-powered generators.

Heavy industries across Europe have already adopted short-time working or, in several cases, weekly shutdowns to cope with rising prices. Car-company bosses are among many who believe they would never be able to pass on the cost of higher energy to consumers and so have made the choice to restrict production until prices fall.
Britain has successfully reduced the supply of gas from Russian gas fields to below 5%, but the privatisation of UK supplies in the North Sea ties consumers to the going rate on international energy markets, leaving the UK as exposed as any other country to rising prices.

Most gas in Europe is carried by pipelines. There could be a switch to liquefied natural gas (LNG), but there is not the storage capacity. Japan and China are among many nations that want huge amounts of LNG, which means the extra supply isn’t there.

This war could cripple the German industry when competing with China or far east in being competitive .

Do not fall for the propaganda and ignorance. UK is least dependent on Russian energy; we get hit by Rothschild Macron and his border antics more than Putin. This is a cold hard fact.

Sanctioning of Russian gas will cause energy prices to rise further

It will lead to competition and scrambling for other sources this will have a ripple effect on countries across the world.

And since the fossil fuel industry also gives us fertilisers plastics textiles and even used in steel production costs will rise on everything

Unbelievable that people believe, without question or critical thought, Western governments give two hoots about Ukraine, or that their propaganda arms, corporate media, is independent, objective and transparent.

The US engineered a coup in 2014, installed a puppet regime - which proceeded to ban the Russian language, spoken by millions. When the Donbass protested, its citizens were declared 'terrorists' and a vicious bombing campaign ensued, leaving 14000 dead, thousands injured and displaced. If Russia wanted to engage in military action it would have done so years ago.

NATO's eastward expansion broke historic agreements, the Minsk Agreements were never implemented and Zelensky's talk of developing nuclear weapons - Ukraine already flooded with Western arms - probably triggered Russia's military operation. The last thing Russia would want is a US-controlled, hostile nuclear-armed neighbour sitting right on its borders, with its cities and citizens under constant threat - any more than the US would want to see Mexico controlled by Russia.

After Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen - and so on - people ought to have developed a degree of scepticism or even distrust about Western narratives and agendas. It is unfortunate that many cannot see Ukraine has been weaponized against Russia - former brothers driven apart by outside entities intent upon divide and conquer.

whilst the West and its vassals engage in manufactured hysterics about Ukraine, Western-supported and armed Saudi Arabia continues to bombard impoverished Yemen, hundreds of thousands have been slaughtered, maimed, displaced, millions at risk of starvation. All of it taking place without any outrage or outcry from Western governments or propagandizing corporate media. Selective compassion and outrage are fake - we are brainwashed into caring for some human lives but not others, because that serves the interests of warmongering classes and powerful elites.

Shell has defended its decision to purchase Russian crude oil despite the invasion and bombardment of Ukraine.

The oil giant said in a statement that the decision to purchase the fuel at a discounted price was "difficult".

It confirmed that it had bought a cargo of Russian crude oil on Friday but it had "no alternative".

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba hit out at the energy company, asking on Twitter: "Doesn't Russian oil smell Ukrainian blood for you?"

Although the purchase does not violate any sanctions introduced by Western countries, Mr Kuleba called on businesses to continue to apply pressure to Russia.

A spokesperson for Shell said, however, that the company is trying to maintain supplies of fuels and in this case it had no alternative crude supplies which would reach Europe in time.

In a statement, the firm said it remains "appalled by the war in Ukraine" and that it has stopped most activities involving Russian oil, but added that the situation with supplies is "highly complex".

Russian oil currently makes up about 8% of work supply.

One of Shell's refineries, which produces diesel and petrol and other products, is also among the biggest in Europe.

"To be clear, without an uninterrupted supply of crude oil to refineries, the energy industry cannot assure continued provision of essential products to people across Europe over the weeks ahead," the spokesperson said.

"Cargoes from alternative sources would not have arrived in time to avoid disruptions to market supply.

"We didn't take this decision lightly and we understand the strength of feeling around it."

The firm also said that it will try to choose alternatives to Russian oil "wherever possible", and that profits from Russian oil will go to a dedicated fund aimed at helping people in Ukraine.

It comes shortly after the company announced that it would end all of its joint ventures with the Russian energy company Gazprom following the invasion.

That will involve the company selling its 27.5% stake in a major liquefied natural gas plant and a 50% stake in two oilfield projects in Siberia.

It will also end its involvement in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Russia and Germany. The 1,200km pipeline under the Baltic Sea had already been put on hold by German ministers.

In a statement issued on Monday, Shell said that it expected the move, which will also apply to any "related entities" to Gazprom, would be worth about $3bn (£2.2bn). The associated costs will be marked on its balance sheet later this year.

Shell followed on from the likes of BP, which had already announced that it would offload its stake in the Russian state-owned oil giant Rosneft - a potential hit of $25bn.

BP said earlier this week it was too soon to say how or to whom its stake in Rosneft would be sold.

Norwegian oil and gas producer Equinor has also announced its exit from Russia, saying the conflict made its current position "untenable".

Am a little disappointed by some who think that killing innocents by Russians in Ukraine somehow is fine given what has happened elsewhere.

What a idiotic rant lol.

I would suggest you play the ball not the man.

I challenge you to a debate without emotions and tears.

The current PM was installed by the west after a coup because the demoractically elected PM choose peace and trade with Russia instead of bowing down to EU and Nato. This caused a war from 2014 where thousands were killed by Ukranian Nazis.

Let see how you respond to this first before going further.

Please highlight the part of the post where the poster has suggested this?

Its reasonable to call out the hypocrisy as this shows the false narrative. Nato bombed so many nations but people somehow think they are angels now.

But the problem is, people either do not know about NATO's appalling record of war crimes across the ME, Yugoslavia - it bombed Serbia for 78 consecutive days - and beyond, have forgotten or simply do not care.

According to Western governments and their corporate media propagandists, Russia does not have the right to protect its citizens, cities or borders - it does not have the right to raise concerns when neo-Nazis are emboldened, empowered, funded and armed to attack Russian-speaking regions and peoples.

Russia has not carpet bombed Ukraine, which it could do if it wanted - which is what the US and its vassals did and do (US currently bombing Syria, drone bombing Somalia, Saudi bombing Yemen, Israel bombing Syria) - but is taking out nuclear facilities that could be used to develop nuclear weapons, airports to prevent delivery of armaments and attempting to destroy neo-Nazi strong-holds. The Western narrative is that Russia is 'killing innocents' - and presenting manufactured evidence, doctored images to 'prove' their assertions. We all know how trustworthy US claims of Iraq's WMDs were, how it lied about Ghaddafi and Assad massacring their own citizens to justify regime change operations.

This is what the conflict is about:

1) NATO's eastward expansion, breaking historic agreements
2) US-engineered coup of 2014
3) Banning Russian language
4) Bombardment of Donbass, 14000 killed, thousands maimed, displaced
5) Ukraine flooded with arms
6) Neo-Nazis empowered
7) Zelensky's talk of nuclear weapons. And-
8) Is it okay for Russia to control Mexico?

At this moment, USA weapon industry and USA gas companies are lobbying very hard to make sure that peace talks end with no positive outcome.

Even before war they made sure to supply useless weapons to sole purpose of interrupt talks. Their Zionist-media sold it all to the public.

AUKUS needs to control the gas and weapon supply to the EU. The whole propaganda is like your annoying manager telling you to make phone calls and push sales.

USA indiscriminately bombed mosques, schools and hospitals in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen - and so on. There was no outrage at all regarding killing innocents. It is naïve to think that any government / military cares about human rights.

Even during last days in Afghanistan USA killed children to the satisfaction of their Satanic Zionists! From a strategic, military or even PR point of view... what else was the point of that useless drone bombing after SEEING children in that house?!

<b>Don't fight in Ukraine - military boss tells Britons</b>

Britons should not head to Ukraine to fight and should instead help however they can from the UK, the head of the armed forces has said.

Speaking to the BBC, Adm Sir Tony Radakin rejected Ukraine's call for a no-fly zone saying it would not help tactically and might escalate fighting.

He urged the West to have confidence that they were doing the "right thing".

The invasion was not going well, Russia was becoming less powerful and it cannot continue, he said.

On Britons wanting to join the fight, Adm Radakin said that the "sound of gunfire" was not "something you want to rush to", and urged people to support Ukraine in sensible ways from the UK.

Asked whether Foreign Secretary Liz Truss had been right to say she would support any Briton who wanted to fight, he said: "We can all understand that sentiment, and that sentiment needs to be channelled into support for Ukraine."

Very well summarised.

Nato are using Ukraine to further their interests. One reason which is not in the open is they want Russia to turn off the gas tap, so USA can sell liquified natural gas to Europe at much higher rate.

I like many other were surprised that the West decided take action against the Serbs as not much economic value was at stake.

I was actually in favour of this action as the Serbs were hell bent on massacring the Muslims of Kosovo and the West's intervention prevented it.

We can now see the Serbs marching in favour of the Russian invasion. Russia has legitimate security concerns but going in bombing all and sunder including civilians is not the answer.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/...oming-Thats-wont-join-carnival-hypocrisy.html

A very interesting article and in the current climate brave article regarding what he alleges false narratives been spun against Russia. The article by Peter Hitchens, brother of the vile Christopher Hitchens who was a major propagandist for the justification of the murder of Muslims in Iraq.

Peter Hitchens unlike his brother is no supporter of murder and war. He has written in detail about Russia/Ukraine since 2014 and offers a point of view that is contrary to the majority of journalists who are in fact just war mongers.

I completely share the position of his in the last two paragraphs and I know Cpt Rishwat has expressed similar views on this thread too.

And then there's the other thing that sticks in my gullet. The countries of the West have egged Ukraine on into a confrontation with Russia which has predictably ended in Putin's barbaric invasion.

But while we stand and cheer at a safe distance, the Ukrainians are the ones who get shelled, bombed, besieged and driven from their homes. Is this honourable? Does sentimental praise for their bravery make up for it?

Muslims were weaponized against Serbs the way they were weaponized against Assad of Syria, the way they are being weaponized against China - with Western claims of Uighur 'genocide' and 'concentration camps,' the US is the source of this disinformation campaign, designed to destabilize a nation that is in the ascendancy.

Kosovo was a tiny enclave, incapable of surviving as an independent nation - it depends absolutely upon the US/Europe and cannot function without them. Look at the former map of the Indian sub-Continent - from one massive, prosperous country, with diverse peoples and languages - and then examine it after British colonization, fragmented into 3, then 4 states: India, East, West Pakistan, Kashmir, then Pakistan further fragmented with Bangladesh coming into being. This is the method applied across Asia, Africa, the ME and Europe.

The West weaponizes communities and countries to fight proxy wars on its behalf, in its divide and conquer agendas.

Sorry, I forgot to add links to articles - that document and detail Ukraine war crimes against Russian-speaking Ukrainians, and another about the US support for Ukraine's far-right extremists, or neo-Nazis. There are other pieces if you are interested.

I did not check your second link but the ‘foundation for the study of democracy’ is a Russian misinformation organization which is an extension of the Russian mission to the United Nations.

While that does not discount that atrocities may have been committed, but using Russian misinformation as a source of truth is just lazy.

In addition to my previous comment, here is an absolute gem of a paragraph from another presentation from the hallowed minds behind “the foundation for study of democracy”:

“ During our fact-checking mission in Syria, we found dozens of participants of the attacks staged by the White Helmets. These people told us in detail, how they had to participate in the stagings for few dollars to buy some food for their families. On the screen, you can see photos of only some of them.”

Yeah. The dude accused the white helmets of staging attacks. Yeah. This is the source you posted.

So tell me, are you misinformed, gullible or infantile? Or all of the above?

Russia says it will open humanitarian corridors to Ukrainian cities today

Russia's military will hold fire and open humanitarian corridors in several Ukrainian cities on Monday, the Defence Ministry said, after fighting halted weekend evacuation efforts and civilian casualties from Russia's invasion mounted.

The corridors were to be opened at 10am Moscow time (0700 GMT) from the capital Kyiv as well as the cities of Kharkiv, Mariupol and Sumy and are being set up at the personal request of French President Emmanuel Macron, the ministry said.

According to maps published by the RIA news agency, the corridor from Kyiv will lead to Russian ally Belarus, and civilians from Kharkiv will only have a corridor leading to Russia. Corridors from Mariupol and Sumy will lead both to other Ukrainian cities and to Russia.

Those who want to leave Kyiv will also be able to be airlifted to Russia, the ministry said, adding it would use drones to monitor the evacuation.

"Attempts by the Ukrainian side to deceive Russia and the whole civilised world ... are useless this time," the ministry said.

Russia's invasion has been condemned around the world, sent more than 1.5 million Ukrainians fleeing abroad, and triggered sweeping Western-led sanctions aimed at crippling the Russian economy.

Russia calls the campaign it launched on February 24 a "special military operation". It has repeatedly denied attacking civilian areas and says it has no plans to occupy Ukraine.

Oil prices soared to their highest levels since 2008 in Asian trade after the Biden administration said it was exploring banning imports of Russian oil. Russia provides seven per cent of global supply.

Japan, which counts Russia as its fifth-biggest supplier of crude oil, is also in discussion with the United States and European countries about possibly banning Russian oil imports, Kyodo News reported on Monday.

Europe relies on Russia for crude oil and natural gas but has become more open to the idea of banning Russian products, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters.

The general staff of Ukraine's armed forces said Russian forces were "beginning to accumulate resources for the storming of Kyiv", a city of 3m, after days of slow progress in their main advance south from Belarus.

About 200,000 people remained trapped in the besieged Black Sea port of Mariupol, most sleeping underground to escape more than six days of shelling by Russian forces that has cut off food, water, power and heating, according to the Ukrainian authorities.

About half of the 400,000 people in the city were due to be evacuated on Sunday but that effort was aborted for a second day when a ceasefire plan collapsed as the sides accused each other of failing to stop shooting and shelling.

Ukrainian authorities said on Monday the southern city of Mykolayiv was being shelled.

'Arc of autocracy'
The civilian death toll from hostilities across Ukraine since Russia launched the invasion was 364, including more than 20 children, the United Nations said on Sunday, adding that hundreds were wounded.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States had seen credible reports of deliberate attacks on civilians and it was documenting them to support a potential war crimes investigation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Russians who committed atrocities against civilians they would face punishment.

"For you, there will be no peaceful place on this earth, except for the grave," he said in a televised evening address.

As anti-war protests took place around the world, Ukraine renewed its appeal to the West to toughen sanctions and also requested more weapons, including Russian-made planes.

Blinken said the United States was considering how it could backfill aircraft for Poland if it decided to supply its warplanes to Ukraine.

Putin says he wants a "demilitarised", "denazified" and neutral Ukraine, and on Saturday likened Western sanctions "to a declaration of war".

New Zealand became the latest country on Monday to announce it will impose sanctions on Russia, including a plan to stop superyachts, ships and aircraft from entering its waters or airspace.

South Korea toughened its financial sanctions against Russia by banning transactions with Russia's central bank.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged China to act on its declarations of promoting world peace and join the effort to stop Russia's invasion of Ukraine, warning that the world was in danger of being reshaped by an "arc of autocracy".

"No country will have a bigger impact on concluding this terrible war in Ukraine than China," Morrison said in response to a question after a speech at the Lowy Institute think tank.

Western sanctions have pushed many companies to exit investments in Russia, while some Russian banks have been shut out of global financial payment systems, driving down the rouble and forcing Moscow to jack up interest rates.

On Sunday, more companies cut ties with Russia: American Express Co, Netflix Inc, accounting giants KPMG and PwC, and video sharing app TikTok.

But Chinese firms are staying put.

Russia's proposed humanitarian corridors 'unacceptable,' says Ukraine's deputy PM

Ukraine's deputy prime minister has condemned Russia's proposal for opening humanitarian corridors in the country as "unacceptable."

Russia had said it would be opening humanitarian corridors out of key cities at around 10 a.m. Moscow time (2 a.m. ET).

In a briefing in Kyiv Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said Ukrainian officials had received a letter from the Russian side offering to organize a ceasefire and open humanitarian corridors.

However, she noted that the humanitarian corridors offered appeared to only open pathways to Russia and Belarus.

"Our people won't go to Belarus and to Russia," she said.

"As You saw in the morning Russian Federation spread the news about their humanism," she said. "This is an unacceptable variant of the humanitarian corridors opening."

Vereshchuk said Ukraine had sent its "own vision of humanitarian corridors to Russia" in response.

Russia is finished

It's been an economic catastrophe

And worse of all their conventional forces have been badly beaten , what they are doing now is just destroying ukraine and turning it into Syria and Iraq. Its a complete disaster.

Their army performance has been beyond poor and I'm actually now beginning to believe their casualties are high there's to many videos of burnt out convoys , bodies lying everywhere, aircraft bring shot down captured pilot's and lodes of soldiers deserting it can't be propaganda anymore.

They are even losing high ranking commanders.
The aircraft and airforce is overrated lack of precision weapons, unable to take out ukranian defences and achieve air supremecy or give air support to troops that should have been objective one in achieving air supremacy like usa nato did before sending troops.
Even in an invasion and occupation usa nato always had air support ever ready alongwith artillery from secured firebases and surveillance from drones and balloons attached to the firebase.
russia has not even set up fortified bases for its troops In ukraine they keep running into mobs of ukranianians and running out food and fuel.

Putin will either be overthrown or assassinated it will be difficult to survive this, an astute person like him should have known full well these foreign interventions never end well .

You made the mistake of just following western media and social media which in the west is so one sided.

Economically it will hurt them, but given how geographically big they are and how many resources they have, they'll manage to find a way. If N Korea and Iran could, they will too. New alliances will be forged, trade will strengthen with other countries. Yes they will suffer but they'll eventually recover.

The Army performance has been appalling in the North but to the East and South they have been doing well. Ukraine is a very big country and Russia is attacking with 190k units over a vast geogrpahical area. Anyone who thought this would be a quick dash and go doesn't understand warfare.

It's war, many high ranking commanders are likely to be lost.

They have air superiority but not air supremacy, that was one huge mistake from them for sure. You can tell they have air supremacy because they have 400-500 sorties per day. You can't expect to make so many sorties and not lose some units. If Russia wanted they could have ended this war on day 1 by dropping half of their inventory on Ukraine, but that is not what they want.

Final point on this, you're seeing all the Ukranian propoganda but none of the Russian footage because the Russian forces don't have their phones with them. Except for those from the LPR/DPR and Chechnya regions.

Ask yourself this, if Russia have surrounded Kharkiv, have almost surrounded Kyiv and have taken a good portion of the south, how many losses would Ukraine have taken? Just because they aren't showing it, doesn't mean it's not happening.

Stop watching only western news outlets.

Ukraine suffers $10bn worth of damage to infrastructure

Ukraine has suffered $10bn (£7.62bn) worth of war damage to its infrastructure, the country has said.

Ukraine's infrastructure ministry said the latest estimate covers from the start of the Russian invasion of the country to Sunday.

It comes as the country's interior ministry said 4,000 people still need to be evacuated from the outskirts of Kyiv to a safe location.

"Russia is doing all it can to prevent humanitarian corridors," it added.

This morning, six humanitarian corridors opened in Ukraine, according to Russia's defence ministry.

This followed an agreed ceasefire to help civilians to evacuate safely from the cities of Kyiv, Mariupol, Kharkiv and Sumy.

Also check out the American gas sector. The board members, the politicians involved and who finances their political campaigns.

This war, like all of them in past 100 years of human history, have been extremely beneficial for a few dozen and their offsprings.

American Gas to Europe’s Rescue (lol, in other words, all the warmongering just to fill some pockets, vintage capitalism)

LNG export terminals are loading tankers with fuel destined for countries threatened by Putin’s energy extortion.
...

Demand for U.S. exports helped set a record 13.3 billion cubic feet of gas loading at the LNG export terminals. Demand is so great that regulators have let tankers fill up at the Calcasieu Pass plant in Louisiana, which is still under construction.

Also check out the American gas sector. The board members, the politicians involved and who finances their political campaigns.

This war, like all of them in past 100 years of human history, have been extremely beneficial for a few dozen and their offsprings.

That’s true but it will also fast track a lot of EVs beneficial for Tesla, it almost seems like few rich ones in America and China are benefiting.

There was a report that oil will go 200$/barrel I highly doubt that, but if it’s going to be anywhere close by that would be bonkers for India, Pakistan.

Despite all my disgust towards Tesla's overpriced boxes with tires, I don't blame them. They are playing a fair game

Tesla never participated in lobbying of Ukraine war. (According to public information available on internet).

Chinese always benefit, doesn't matter what happens lol. Perks of riding with a global economic leader.

Ukrainian mayor shot dead near Kyiv

The mayor of Hostomel has been shot and killed while out distributing aid, according to Ukrainian officials.

The town is close to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, and is home to the Hostomel airfield, a key strategic point at the centre of fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

The town council said Yuri Prylypko died while distributing bread and medicines to those in need.

He was killed along with two others, Ruslan Karpenkom and Ivan Zore.

A statement by the Hostomel council said he "died as a hero", adding it is impossible for a funeral to immediately be held due to the war.

It’s rightly being pointed out in India that Visa,Mastercard pullout in Russia should had made the world wary of them.

Glad India made alternatives to Visa,Mastercard, Gpay,Apple pay.

In my opinion Ukrain have the right to join EU and Russia has the right to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. If there was good intent, Zelensky would have beeb able to negotiate that. But a puppet that he is, he decided to play for NaTO, sacrificing his own people. Ukranians are being heraled as brave, in my opinion they are blind/brain washed to not see through this.

Palladium, and Oil, have hit new 13 highs.

Do not underestimate Russia’s access to natural resources.

Go research on how much oil USA import from Russia; yes you read this correctly.
900k barrels a day. A trivia amount actually when compared to daily consumption of 18m barrels.

Less than 5%. And that is easily absorbed.

A little discomfort today will set back the totalitarian state some 10 years.
