Russia invades Ukraine

ha ha ha ha ha in Syria the S300 couldn't detect the F-35. It was useless. The S400 & s500 hav 1 fatal flaw... they struggle to see anything under 38,000 ft.

They are not designed to take out IBM's

The S-300 is old and would be more suitable to the 3rd and 4th generation combat jets the Americans have.

The Americans wouldn't risk putting up their jets against the Russian SAMs, not saying one would win over the other, I'm saying it's not worth the risk. In the same way the Russians are not using much of their air force against Ukraine either because of the SAMs and shoulder anti-air.

Bones on the battlefield the usa destroyed the taliban , iraqi and later al queda and isis in Iraq and Syria toe to toe.

What your on about is an insurgency which is totally different that's not an army vs army that's small groups of individuals carrying out ied attacks suicide bomb attacks , gun attacks assassinations kidnappings etc .

So stop your nonsense the usa rolled into iraq on the highway and they were unstoppable because they had aircover the Iraqis would never engage in open battle because an apache or a10 would appear .

The Taliban, Iraqi and Al Qaedo forces had Ak47s and hand guns. Very each to look invincible against forces who are not comparable to you.

The Russians are fighting against the 2nd largest army in europe, that has NATO trained units amongst the and who are armed to the teeth with some very powerful ground and air systems.
mazkhan, do you think the Americans would have been able to roll into Afghanistan and Iraq if those armies had even a fraction of the military systems that Ukraine does? How about you stop your nonsense about this military super power who behaves more like the school yard bully.

Putin says Belarus's integration with Russia 'speeding up' due to pressure from West
Vladimir Putin has said political pressure from the West was accelerating Belarus's integration with Russia.

Another country to add to the 'empire' then... can't wait for the sham referendum

The UK's debt payment is less than 5% of its GDP. Its absolutely nowhere near insolvent.

If i call my bank today and ask for a loan... and they see that i only shell out 5% of my salary on other debts.... i'll get a loan. No question.

the UK economoy is worth 3 trillion pounds and its debt stands at 2.3b.

with nearly 70% of that to the bank of England.... who are owned by the UK gov. They are in debt to themselves mainly.

The uk going bust is a fantasy to you... not a reality

As I said, you have no idea.

The UK Government debt is £2 TRILLION, not 2.3 Billion.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/gove...tdebtanddeficitforeurostatmaast/september2021

The 70% owned is through deficit, which in turn means selling Gilts on the market.

You have a lot to learn.

UK is broke.

:)

The Uk isn't broke. Again thats a fantasy.

China has a debt of 7trillion. Are they broke?

There is one fascinating common feature of the ineptly ill-targeted Russian missile strikes this week on the shopping mall and on apartment blocks in Odessa.

Both sets of air-launched long-distance missiles used the 1962-vintage Kh-22 anti-ship missile.

To attack land targets!

We now have proof that Russia has exhausted its supply of relatively modern fairly precise cruise missiles and is now reduced to bolting sixty-year-old anti-ship missiles onto aircraft and firing them randomly in the vague direction of the Ukrainians.

This means that Russia’s conventional forces have now sunk to their lowest level of capability since 1941.

Russia has wasted its least outdated weaponry on a foolish war, and now would be incapable of fighting any sort of conventional war against Western forces.

China has a much lower debt to GDP ratio, it has a manufacturing base which UK can only dream of (but hey you still get to buy cheap goods), and more importantly, China buys worldwide bonds, resources, and makes global investments. As a result its income is higher than its debt obligations - so no China is not broke despite their level of debt.

UK is broke : Government income is less than debt obligations; which is why the UK goes out to the bond market with a begging bowl and is reluctant to raise interest rates. China, Russia have the luxury of raising rates without going bankrupt.

And in case you are wondering, Russia has the lowest Debt to GDP ratio in the Western hemisphere, is selling natural resources by the bucket load, and is cash positive. And no, Russia did not default on its debt obligation, it has the money, but the Western financial institutions refused to accept USD because Russia is out of SWIFT.

Economic, Political, and Military power has well and truly swung towards the East.

Learn to accept these facts instead of making excuses for a country that is in demise, since the end of WW2.

:)

The Arab Slave Trade overlapped the Atlantic Passage in terms of duration at both ends, and took more slaves too.

Descendants of American slaves became City Mayors, Senators, Congressmen and Supreme Court judges, if not POTUS. Obama is son of a black Kenyan.

It’s sad and strange to me that you somehow feel outside or above Britishness. But the Muslims of HM Armed Forces, plus other races and religions will fight to protect you, if we are invaded. We Britons who value our Britishness safeguard the sidelines you stand on.

Like I said we can argue about slavery in another topic as I'm in no way supporting either forms of the trade..just highlighting the fact everyone was involved..with regards to descendants true..and in the Muslim world the slaves themselves became rulers..but I digress..

I do feel outside Britishness now..it was not always like that but over time it has become that way. Through racism discrimination and being treated differently just because I am a Asian Muslim male. If anybody invade this land we will all defend it. I may not feel British anymore but this is still home and I will defend it like all the Muslims who live here..but invading other country's and claiming it as defence is nonsense. Claiming superiority both moral and racial is unacceptable.

And now with this govt in charge I no longer feel British. Keir starmer is no better. In time it will be time to leave..and I will do so with a heavy heart and a broken one..after giving years to this country as a public servant.. we are now second class citizens..we always were. We were just fed a lie that we could be equal..we never were.

I have a feeling Putin will declare victory when attending the G20 summit in Nov.

Hopefully the athletes Biden and Boris dont get a heart attack.

Eurozone inflation hits 8.6%.

You ain't seen nothing yet.

Western sanctions are working on Russia! Hmmm. Reminds me of the Superman 2 ending, where the radiation is outside of Superman's capsule resulting in his adversaries losing all powers.

:)))

G-meetings are a thing of the past now.

As Putin said, 900M population in the West, 4.2 Billion in the East. All about the BRICS meetings now.

Iraqi army had a highly trained army and some very good equipment and air defence systems in gulf war go and see how usa nato dealt with those systems and then got the Iraqis out of kuwait.

Same with Israel vs Syria and Egypt

Russian airforce can't even dominate ukranian airspace because they lack precision munitions and if they fly to low they get knocked out by medium range Sam's or manpads.

UK Could Cut Gas Links To Europe If Severe Shortages Occur

"The UK is considering cutting off gas supply via two interconnectors to mainland Europe under an emergency plan that would be triggered in case of severe gas shortages in Britain, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

Under the UK’s emergency plan to cope with gas shortages, National Grid could stop sending gas via the two-way pipelines to Europe, one to Belgium and another one to the Netherlands. During the summer, the UK typically sends gas to Europe via the pipelines, while it imports gas via those same pipelines during the winter.

The idea of shutting off supply to Europe would be one of the early stages in a four-stage emergency plan to cope with potential severe gas shortages in the coming months, FT reports."

There is gonna be big chaos across Europe during winter going into 2023

People will need to brace themselves I would never of thought of it during my lifetime but we are entering an era very reminiscent of the 1930s 1940s economic collapse energy living crisis and the leaders to cover it up by war just like ww2.

There's already talks of rationing electricity gas and fuel in the future , only a matter of time when bojo tells us to grow our own turnips and spuds like Churchill.

Agree.

Putin is only attending knowing he can stare them in the face to inform they have not only lost but their days of controlling the world is done.

BRICS total GDP $27 trillion, between 4.2 billion people.

US + UK + Australia + Canada + EU total GDP $65 trillion between 0.9 billion people.

The BRICS are a bunch of ill-governed countries. Four are ruled by despots and in the fifth one half the population poos outdoors.

You may not feel British.

But compared with if you lived in Russia, you have freedom of speech, earn six times as much money and are protected by the Race Relations Act.

Compared with another BRICS nation you have freedom of religion, your mosque hasn’t been demolished and your fellow Muslims are not being re-educated.

Compared with Pakistan, you will live two decades longer, earn twelve times as much money, have lifetime free healthcare, freedom of religion and your female relatives enjoy both more freedom and more opportunities.

Like you, I lament the rise of petty nationalism around the world - including in the UK - which is making you uncomfortable. I hate it.

Yet you seem to align yourself with countries which would treat you much worse than the one you are fortunate enough to live in.

In case you missed it the purpose of BRICS is economic growth and shifting away from USD.

You can stick to pooing indoors in debt ridden West.

The Russian government has added grain, sunflower oil and extracted meal to the list of exports that must be paid for in Rubles.

Looks like high probability of famine will spread in Europe!

I wouldn't be surprised if EU leaders will soon lift sanctions just to stay alive!

Good to see you seem to enjoy Starvation and Famine being used as a weapon.

It won't be the EU who suffers starvation

Putin is not using famine as a weapon, all he has demanded is buyers pay in Rubles.

Time to accept Western sanctions have backfired, and stop pretending you were not looking forward to Russia being starved of all things necessary with Western sanctions.

Admit it, West got played.

No, the west sanctioned Russia in the hope of crippling them immediately and almost permanently. The Russians put in place counter measures and these counter measures are in fact giving huge problems to the west.

If the west doesn't want Russia dictating terms for the food and fuel, maybe they should end their sanctions.

Again thats not true. Biden was very clear that sanctions would take months and would not help Ukraine in the short term. It was and still is a long game.

Also by defaulting on their debt, which was due to sanctions it means they now have a big issue with credit rating. When Russia needs to start rebuilding its infrastructure it will need to borrow to do it...

chances are they won't be able to. They also cant buy the parts needed for advanced weapons, and their buddies in Beijing havent come to the party on that.

And as we've now started to see, they are running out of new stuff.

And maybe Russia should stop invading another country for Imeprial reasons... that would be the correct thing to do. Right?

Glad to read you will defend our land. That’s one thing we have in common.

Regarding your last paragraph- Johnson is contemptible and UK sliding towards fascism. British democracy is fragile and it just took one individual without conscience or sense of duty to expose that.

But he is out at the next GE.

I don’t vote Labour any more, but Starmer is a fundamentally good man who has given his adult life to public service. The decent people of this country can turn things around.

The claims on MSM back in March were that these sanctions were the equivalent of an economic nuclear bomb. I will dig up some articles if you like?

I really think you should read some independent and reliable journalists on this matter. I have yet to find a single saying that the west are winning either militarily or economically. All of them are saying that Russia are winning and winning big in most ways.

Russia like the west are not using their new equipment in large numbers because they want to get rid of their older equipment first. The Russians are using older tanks the Americans are sending older drones etc.

As for the relationship between Russia and China, did you see the recent BRICS meeting and SPIEF? In the G7 meeting the leaders looked unprofessional and clueless. Whereas the BRICS and SPIEF meetings showed a professional team with well thought out plans. An example of G7 stupid is trying to put a price cap on fossil fuels, which was rebuffed almost immediately.

When Russia were pounding their way through Severodonssk the clowns in western MSM kept telling us that they should retreat/withdraw to Lysychansk which is elevated and easier to defend. Well Lysychansk is collapsing faster than Severodonestk.

I have no doubt Ukrainians have fled the city in huge numbers leaving behind large weapons and vehicles. That makes the Russian advance so much quicker in this area.

The reports are that Ukraine have and are amassing a huge army around the next line of defence but the Russians are also preparing and it will be perhaps the biggest battle of the war. Ukraine still don't have enough artillery or munitions so will be interesting to see what their strategy will be.

No more Scottish and Welsh money should be given to Ukraine for weapons, say Nicola Sturgeon’s ministers

Nicola Sturgeon’s ministers have said no more of Scotland’s money should be given to Ukraine for weapons after being pressured by the Treasury to hand over £65 million.

Kate Forbes, the Scottish finance secretary, said she had agreed to provide the funding “on this occasion” but made it clear that “this must not be seen as any kind of precedent”.

Her comments were echoed by Rebecca Evans, her Welsh counterpart, who said she had been forced to give £30 million earmarked for “devolved areas like health and education”.

2 more Brits caught in Ukraine and charged with mercenary activities.

Got to hand it to them, will not house Ukrainian refugees, but will put their families in hardship way for the sake of NATO and their fascist propaganda.

Tsk tsk.

I wonder how long this ridiculous bank rolling by bojo and biden will continue when you have people starving in the UK in rent arrears and in debt because they can't pay their leccie and gas bills

Some reliable military men are saying if Ukraine play this smart, they could build a defensive line that would be impossible for Russia to breach quickly and without mobilisation. The line would be around Dnipro to Zaporozhia. If the Ukrainians are not smart they could lose these cities too. Some might argue that they will lose these cities regardless. I don't think 200k is enough soldiers for Russia to take so many cities.

Atm the saving grace for the russians have been their chechen and Mongolian type mercs

You are utterly clueless on what is happening out there. The heavy lifting in this war is being done by the LPR and the DNR. They are the ones pushing through in the fronts.

The Chechens only make up 10-11k of the total 200k forces. The reason why you and others think the Chechens are doing so much is because they have phones and press with them.

I suggest once again, you read what people like Jacob Dreizin have to say about this conflict to understand what is really going on.

Two interesting developments today.

The Russians seem to be admitting that the explosions across the Russian border city of Belgorod came from their own misfiring anti-aircraft defences.

Meanwhile the daily British briefing confirmed what I have been saying for a week or two now: Russia is reduced to using 60 year old anti-ship missiles against city targets because it has run out of modern cruise missiles.

Let me guess they're also running out of tanks and armored vehicles and so are having to dig deep into their warehouses for old equipment right?

The British Daily briefing, I'm guessing you mean the from from the British Ministry of Defence, should be placed into the fake news category. It is a fact proven by video and photo evidence that just a few days ago the Russians launched Kalibr missiles on targets in Kyiv. Maybe they felt they didn't need to use the more expensive precision missiles on the less protected cities?

Frankly if anyone wants to get the true situation you're better off reading random idiots on social media than listening to the MSM.

No offence, but anybody who uses the expression “MSM” self-identifies as an extremist who refuses to recognise objective news from credible news sources and instead cherry-picks propaganda from their own side.

So rather like Trump supporters getting their “news” from Fox News and Facebook.

The very fact that you use the expression MSM essentially discredits all your arguments. It means that you actually do obtain your “information” from propaganda and “random idiots on social media”!

The best guess is that Russia probably had around 500 functional Kalibr cruise missiles before the invasion of which around 15-20 remain.

They used to be able to manufacture around 100 per year (including for export) but both Algeria and Vietnam have been told that no more submarine-launched ones can be produced and India has been told that no more ship-launched ones can be made.

Which fits with the narrative that Russia was always reliant on imported components which it can no longer obtain.

So at the moment it is clear that Russia has fewer Russian-made Kalibr cruise missiles
left than Algeria or Vietnam have.

Which fits - there is every reason to think that having squandered their best personnel and equipment, Russia’s remaining conventional forces now are inferior to those of countries like Algeria or Vietnam.

Russia takes full control of Donbass.

Not quite. Luhansk yes - Donestk and therefore Donbas will need a few more weeks. The Ukranians are sending in fodder to shore up the next defensive line, which will be annihalated but of course will take time.

Russia takes full control of Donbass.

No it hasn't its just taken over one of the divisions that make up the donbas called luhansk

It still needs to liberate a large area of donetsk cities such as kramotarsk slavoyanks

And then to protect the donbas make a buffer zone and cut of kharkiv izyum from ukranians.

And to really bring ukraine on its knees annex the whole coastal area cities like mykolaiv and odessa and recapture snake Island.

Long way to go yet

The Chechens are mostly involved in the city clean-up operation after most of Ukraine forces have been demolished, it is their expertise and also they are very good at social media game.

MSM has long since lost any credibility or the notion of being "objective". I will take this opportunity to remind you that on March 24 the BBC ran with an story on their web front page along the lines of "Russia set to run out of missiles and heavy artillery munitions within days".

This is the same MSM who continue to paint ever small Ukranian counter offensive at a company level as a major victory but each Russian BTG level victory as not important strategically. There is a reason why people are moving away from MSM, when the lies continue to stack up, people don't bother.

You carry on listening to BBC and CNN.

Lol.. mate you are full on Russian propaganda.. atleast try to have some middleground.

It is embarrassing to see your posts here, at least follow some local Russian/Ukrainian Telegram channels to see what is happening. Even France Govt propaganda channel France24 and Sky News UK were embarrassed when they were called liars by locals and also supported the Russians there. The Ukraine Govt has been killing these folks in tens of thousands since 2014.

Lol.. mate you are full on Russian propaganda.. atleast try to have some middleground.

I'm sure there are some who were neutral and others who were with Ukraine, but the vast majority of the population in Donbas were and are still definitely pro-Russian. That's what happens when you start shelling civilians for 8 years.

India wouldn’t mess with its economy , case in point Nupur Sharma after backlash.

My point goes both ways btw, if Pakistan did the same we'd face the same result.

Both nations are too populated, and their populations awash with guns for them to be occupied

Correction,
80% of the ethnically-Russian inhabitants of Donbas moved to safer parts of Ukraine when the pro-Russian terrorists, and more recently the Russian Army, started to reduce their towns and villages to rubble.

The only people who stayed and are welcoming the Russian terrorists as they arrive are the rump of roughly 20% of Donbas citizens who prefer Russia.

The Russians are already making moves on Siversk. Not sure how they are doing so this quickly because after the capture and cleaning of Lysychansk I expected rest and rotation.

Perhaps the rumours of the massive Ukrainian army there was an exaggeration or maybe they have withdrawn to another more drfendable line.

Yeah, I subtract credibility points from any poster who uses “MSM”. There is an arrogance in such people. They aim low on the pyramid of debate, discrediting sources rather than countering points, applying complex equivalences, logical fallacies and setting up strawmen. I block them.

It was never massive. During the invasion of 2014 it was hardly there at all. It has been reinforced with lots of militia - men with civvie jobs and college students who picked up a Kalashnikov in the defence of their land.

Recent credible sources stated that Ukraine had amassed 20k soldiers around siversk, in the last 2 months. 20k under trained and under equipped men is still enough to keep the enemy busy for a while.

Russia has become India’s biggest supplier of phosphate fertilizers due to discounts amid Ukraine-related Western sanctions, The Indian Express reported on Thursday, citing industry sources.

Biden Says Americans To Suffer High Gasoline Prices For “As Long as it Takes”

Biden said in a Thursday press conference that Americans would suffer high gasoline prices for as long as it takes for Russia to be defeated.

New York Times’ Jim Tankersley asked the President on the final day of the NATO summit in Madrid how long American drivers would have to pay a premium for gasoline.

“The war has pushed prices up—they could go as high as $200 per barrel, some analysts think. How long is it fair to expect American drivers and drivers around the world to pay that premium for this war?” Tankersley asked.

“As long as it takes so Russia cannot, in fact, defeat Ukraine,” President Biden replied.

Entire industries in Germany could collapse due to Russian natural-gas supply cuts: union head

This is correct.

Chechens are experts in close urban combat. Some of their fighters are built like tanks, they can use heavy machine guns all day without tiring.

Its great to see MSM now accepting Russia is winning by taking land on a daily basis. By Oct/Nov Russia will have liberated all the land they need.

Biden might be happy but his citizens will not be happy with huge inflation and high fuel prices for too long. Reason why they will attack Trump and others , pretending to defend blacks, LGBT, women etc.

Trump should ensure high security, they will want him dead to ensure he doesnt win the next GE, which he will hands down easily.

UK Motorways Crippled By Fuel Price Protests

Organized via social media under the banner of "Fuel Price Stand Against Tax," rolling, slow-moving roadblocks of cars, trucks and tractors started their protests around 7am. According to The Guardian.

The price of petrol in the UK has surged to to a record 191.53 pence per liter, which equates to $8.78 a gallon.—the highest among the five largest European economies.

The protestors are bent on achieving a cut in fuel taxes. None of their quoted rhetoric connects the dots between the price at the pump and Western sanctions against Russia.

Cox told The Independent the effort is largely driven by small business owners:

“People are at the end of their tether. This is hard-working, decent people who are fed up to their back teeth with the high cost of pump prices"

Russia-Saudi relations as warm as 'Riyadh weather', Prince Abdulaziz says

Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman described the relations between Riyadh and Moscow “as warm as the weather in Riyadh”.

The Saudi minister met on Thursday with Russia’s deputy prime minister Alexander Novak at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Russia could continue cooperating within the OPEC+ agreement for oil production beyond 2022, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said, even after the current deal expires at the end of the year.

“Everything will depend on the market situation — whether it will require any quotas or it will be a charter-based cooperation,” he said. “It will be clear by year-end.”

Indian Payment giant NPCI moots SWIFT alternative

They are terming it as SWIFT alternative for Indians abroad but everyone knows why India and China are both forming their alternatives to western weapon of SWIFT.

"World Bank has tracked that Indian expatriates have remitted $87 billion last year which is by far, the largest cross-border inflow for any country. According to Ritesh Shukla, chief executive officer of NPCI International Payments Ltd., the remittance that costs an overhead of $13 on average to send $200 across border, is ready for disruption, said the report.

“We have displaced cash in India to a large extent and are now looking to repeat the success in cross-border corridors,” Bloomberg quoted Shukla as saying. “Overseas Indians can use our rails to remit money inwards straightway into their bank accounts, and for the markets where Indians travel frequently, we will build acceptance for our instruments.”

Effective implementation of UPI overseas would provide India a country based alternative to SWIFT which is a Belgium-based cross-border payment system operator.

SWIFT is toast.

The West do not control the rest of the world, or its finances.

Since WW2 all we have been taught is how Hitler was evil, in reality, the Western ideology of control and sanctions, which has resulted in more than 6M deaths, makes Hitler look like a foot note.

Hats off to Putin, he has single handedly changed the course of history. Duped NATO into a proxy war, when all the while, his aim was to convince the world to move away from SWIFT and USD dominance.

The himars system is badly screwing up the russian and their ammo dumps. That's what msm is claiming alongwith zelensky .

Even if russia does achieve its objectives the material losses and casualties are at a very high level.

Funny how you keep quoting the proven liars that are MSM.

Boris is defeated before Putin. I wonder which of the European leaders will be next to go, my pretty obvious choice is Scholz.

Putin saying this openly now.

""Only strong and sovereign governments can speak their minds in this newborn world order — either that or they're destined to remain colonies," of the US, said the Russian president, per NPR."

Its clear Putin knew the west would overreact , use sanctions which hurt Europe and enable Russia and others to start a new order in the world.

Russia and China cannot be win any outright war with Nato/USA and vice versa. Ruining their financial dominance and taking their economies on the brink of collapse is the plan it seems.

People in these regions are beginning to value their own natural and development resources, Purnima Anand claims

The West is finding it more difficult to compete with Asian and African countries as people in these regions are beginning to understand the value of their own natural resources, the president of the BRICS international forum, Purnima Anand, said in an interview with RT on Thursday.

-------

She's not wrong. BRIC economies have untapped potential and growth, and when the BRIC population realise they need not be subservient to the West and the USD, Western power as we know it will decline rapidly.

Former advisor to US Secretary of Defence Colonel Douglas Macgregor to Sky news Australia: If you continue to supply Ukraine with weapons, the country may disappear from the world map.

“This is already, in principle, a failed state, it can completely disappear from the map of the world,”

Saudis Unwilling To Upset Putin As Biden Begs For More Crude

"While the U.S. and its Western allies are sanctioning Moscow and banning oil imports from Russia, U.S. President Joe Biden is also turning to Saudi Arabia to ask it to pump more oil as Americans pay on average $5 a gallon for gasoline.

The Saudis prefer to keep close ties with Russia in oil policy as the OPEC+ pact and the control over a large portion of global oil supply has benefited both OPEC+ leaders—the Kingdom and Russia—over the past half a decade.

President Biden—desperate to see relief for American drivers ahead of the midterm elections—has made a U-turn on Saudi Arabia and is expected this month to visit the Kingdom, which he said on the campaign trail would be treated as a “pariah” state during his presidency."

EU to build new top-secret bunker

The European Union is spending €8 million ($8.1 million) to build a secure bunker in Brussels where leaders can meet in secrecy. The chamber will be insulated against electronic interference, and all gadgets will be banned from entering.
The chamber will be designed to host around 100 people comprising up to 34 leaders and associated staff. Due to be built by 2024, the bunker will be located somewhere within the European Council’s complex in the Belgian capital.

The meeting room will be offline, but will contain microphones wired to secure booths for interpreters. Both the room and these booths will be shrouded in a “NATO-certified insulation cage” to stop electromagnetic and radio waves from within being picked up outside, and anyone seeking to enter, even cleaners, will need a “SECRET EU” security clearance – the bloc’s second-highest level of classification.

According to the supposed EU memo, the facility will be swept “before and after the meetings to detect, locate and neutralize any eavesdropping device,” and anyone entering will be required to leave phones, laptops, smart watches, electronic key fobs and hearing aids in soundproof lockers outside.

This intense focus on security is aimed at shutting out “Russian or other eavesdroppers,” EUobserver wrote. However, it is unknown whether the EU is building the chamber in response to a specific security threat or out of a general sense of caution. Individually, EU members have accused Russia of espionage long before Moscow sent its troops into Ukraine, and the expulsion of diplomats over alleged spying is par for the course in international relations, with Belgium claiming to have booted out dozens of Russian spies earlier this year.

However, spying takes place between allies as often as adversaries, with the United States famously bugging a reported 122 world leaders circa 2014. Extensive surveillance was carried out by the US National Security Agency on high-level officials in both France and Germany, according to documents released by WikiLeaks.

Israel and China have also been accused of conducting surveillance operations in Brussels, and the EU has pressed Belgium for years to tighten up its espionage laws, which allow spying to go unpunished in many cases.
