The Russian ambassador to Ankara has been killed in a gun attack at an art gallery in the Turkish capital, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

Reports said Andrei Karlov was attending the opening of an exhibit at a contemporary arts centre when he was attacked. Karlov was several minutes into a speech at the exhibit when a man shouted “Allahu Akbar” and fired at least eight shots, according to an AP photographer who was present.

The attacker also smashed some of the photographs, AP reported. A source told RIA Karlov had died at the scene.

Turkey’s NTV reported that the gunman had been killed by police.

Turkish officials said the assassin entered the building claiming he was a police officer. Other bystanders alleged he shouted “Aleppo” when he shot Karlov, but the claims could not be immediately confirmed.

The attacker was said to have first shot Karlov in the back, before ordering people to leave the room. He then reportedly shot a second time as he lay on the floor. Turkish special forces have surrounded the gallery, believing the attacker to still be inside.

The Russian foreign ministry said it was in contact with Ankara over the events, RIA Novosti reported. President Vladimir Putin called an urgent meeting with foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and the heads of the security services.

The ambassador had been part of discussions between Turkey that led to an evacuation of east Aleppo getting underway late last week. He had also been a central conduit to the Turkish government’s rapproachment with Moscow in April.

The incident comes a day before the Turkish foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, is due in Moscow for talks with Russian and Iranian counterparts.

Russia and Turkey have recently gone some way to mending ties, following a long freeze in relations after Turkey shot down a Russian fighter plane in November 2015.

Fatih Öke, the press attache of Turkey’s embassy in Washington DC, wrote on Twitter: “The bullet to Ambassador Karlov is not only aims him. It aims also Turkish Russian relation. We are praying for his good health and peace.”

Karlov is a career diplomat who had previously served as ambassador to North Korea.

Russian ambassador to Turkey shot dead in Ankara, Moscow terms it 'terrorist act'

A gunman crying “Aleppo” and “revenge” shot and killed Russia's ambassador to Turkey while he was visiting an art exhibition in Ankara on Monday, witnesses and media reports said.

“Today in Ankara as a result of an attack the Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov received wounds that he died from,” ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova said in televised comments, adding “we qualify what happened as a terrorist act”.

Three other people were wounded in the attack, NTV and CNN-Turk television stations said.

Television footage showed a man in a dark suit and tie waving a gun and gesturing in the air.

Key updates

  • Moscow terms it as a "terrorist act"
  • Three other people wounded
  • Attack happened at the Cagdas Sanatlar Merkezi in Ankara
  • Gunman was standing behind the ambassador

The state-run Anadolu news agency said the gunman had been “neutralised” in a police operation, without giving further details.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had been informed.

The incident came after days of protests in Turkey over Russia's role in Syria, although Moscow and Ankara are now working closely together to evacuate citizens from the battered city of Aleppo.

Pictures published by the Hurriyet daily showed at least two men in suits lying flat on the ground as another man brandished a gun.

'People fleeing'

The attack happened at the Cagdas Sanatlar Merkezi, a major art exhibition hall in the Cankaya district of Ankara where most foreign embassies are located including Russia's mission.

“It happened during the opening of an exhibition,” Hurriyet correspondent Hasim Kilic, who was at the exhibition, told AFP.

“When the ambassador was delivering a speech, a tall man wearing a suit, fired into the air first and then took aim at the ambassador,” said Kilic.

“He said something about Aleppo and 'revenge'. He ordered the civilians to leave the room. When people were fleeing, he fired again,” he added.

The Russian foreign ministry spokesman added that medics were trying to treat the envoy at the scene but that shooting continued, retracting an earlier report that he was taken to hospital.

Protesters in Turkey have held Moscow responsible for human rights violations in Aleppo.

The attacker remained inside the building after and television as clashes were continued.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu was at the scene to supervise a police operation, Turkish television said.

The attacker was “neutralised” in the operation, Anadolou said.

US condemns attack on Russian ambassador to Turkey

The United States condemns the gun attack on the Russian ambassador to Turkey earlier on Monday, the US State Department said.

Ambassador Andrei Karlov died of his gunshot wounds after he was attacked at an art gallery in the Turkish capital Ankara on Monday, the Russian RIA news agency reported.

“We condemn this act of violence, whatever its source,” said US State Department spokesman John Kirby in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

Turkey and Russia saw relations plunge to their worst levels since the Cold War last year when a Turkish jet shot down a Russian war plane over Syria.

They stand on opposite sides of the Syria conflict with Ankara backing rebels trying to topple Moscow ally President Bashar al-Assad.

But the rhetoric has warmed considerably since a a reconciliation deal was signed earlier this year and a Russian and Turkish-brokered deal has helped the evacuation of citizens from Aleppo in the last days.

The attack comes a day before Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran, Assad's other key ally, were to hold unprecedented tripartite talks on the Syria conflict in Moscow.

A Turkish official on Monday denied Ankara had forged any secret “bargain” with Moscow over the future of Syria, despite the improving cooperation that led to the deal for evacuations from Aleppo.

Turkey is soon becoming a basket case unfortunately.

RIP.

RIP to the ambassador but sorry to say this attack doesn't surprise me.

The Russians decided to get involved in Syria directly, not just that they have been complicit by committing war crimes as they have targeted every single hospital in Eastern Aleppo.

I think the Russians will bear the brunt of attacks from extremist groups in the coming years IMO.

Not a good gesture, after Russia forced Assad and Iran to let go terrorists from Aleppo unharmed today.

Now, Russia would not force Assad next time.

Russian ambassador got killed by a terrorist and you blaming Russia.
Not going to condemn terrorist?

This is why it's not a good idea to bomb a city full of people.

Russia have been heavy handed in Syria, in particular their targeting of hospitals and blowback had to be expected.

I understand the rage and fury, believe me if Aleppo was my city and I had to endure the constant aerial bombardment, the killing of family and friends, and the destruction of infrastructure - I wouldn't have much words to say in favour of Russia either.

But this is not right. Sadly, violence begets violence and the Syrian civil war claims another life.

The shooter was an off-duty Turkish police officer. He's been killed by Turkish special forces.

Well Turkey are blaming Gulen and Putin seems to agree...

Yeah but the problem is, Russians are ruthless and are not gonna keep quiet in such things. Another black September aftermath situation can happen. When a mafia lord kidnapped a businessman close to Putin and sent his family his ear as a threat for ransom, Putin's forces tracked the mafia chief's family, cut his brother's head off and sent that back. The businessman was then released.

Human rights consideration is not going to hold Russia back. If they can kill someone with polonium directly in UK, they will hunt any organization and their backers all over the world

Poor guy is just the latest victim of political grandstanding over Syria. No idea what is going on in Turkey but it's being dragged into a wider war and now seems even diplomats are fair game.

Who said the Russians care about human rights ?

Just check their record in Chechnya ! What they have done in Syria is exactly what they did there more than a decade ago there - flattening the whole area and turning it into a car park.

But did it bring them peace ?? No it didn't because when you kill indiscriminately you only create more hatred against you.

The Russians may have saved Assad from power but their actions have not been proportionate at all.

A lot of Turkish channels have been covering events unfolding in Aleppo and Russian bombardment of the city. As you can imagine media has a lot of influence on people. This guy got too emotional and decided to take it off on a diplomat. Erdogan is trying to link this guy with U.S. based Gulen fethullah. It's unlikely that this guy had links with Gulen because most linked with Gulen have been purged already. Russia must have earned a lot of new fans around the world during the last few months.

Not just Chechnya but millions in modern day Ukraine too. The tragedy in Ukraine is known is Holodomor. Back then Western and Russian rulers denied it ever happened. Russian rulers have been the worst after Hitler and it's sad nobody held them responsible. For this reason alone they do not deserve veto power in U.N.

this is obviously a typical move employed by the US to make sure Russia and Turkey's recent increase in cooperation comes to an end. Putin is well aware of this as you will hear in his speach, he does not blame Turkey at all but outside forces

And now some Jamaat-ul nutjob in Pakistan calls this assassin a "Shaheed"
