A contingent of the Russian Army arrived in Pakistan early Monday morning to participate in joint training exercise ‘Druzhba-III’.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), this will be the third joint military drill between Islamabad and Moscow under the bilateral training cooperation agreement.

Relations between Pakistan and Russia have seen unprecedented growth in the last few years after the two sides realised that the current geo-strategic situation required greater bilateral interaction.

Last week, the Russian military announced that the joint war games codenamed Druzhba – Slavic word for friendship – would be conducted at a training range in the town of Pabbi.

Vadim Astafyev, head of the press service of the Southern Military District, had said that more than 70 mountain troops from Karachay-Cherkessia would take part in the drills. “The servicemen from the two countries’ armed forces will perform tasks at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level,” he said.

DRUZBA 2017: Pakistan, Russia hold anti-terror exercise

Russia and Pakistan have been holding the “Friendship” drills since 2016. In October 2016, they held their first-ever joint military exercise in Pakistan. In 2017, over 200 servicemen took part in the drills, hosted by Russia at Minralney Vody in the North Caucasus at an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level.

The joint exercises are seen as another step in growing military-to-military cooperation, indicating a steady growth in the relationship between the two countries, whose ties had been marred by Cold War rivalry for decades.

Pakistan now considers Russia as a key regional player in the new scheme of things in order to offset the negative fallout of Trump’s new roadmap. Both Pakistan and Russia appear to be on the same page on Afghanistan as they have been calling for a political solution to the long-running conflict. There have been greater exchanges between the two former Cold-War rivals in recent years.

Changing world for sure. Old enemies are becoming friends.

This is just Russia's response to India holding joint military exercises with the US.

But the India Russia alliance remains strong, as evidenced by the recent Indian decision to ignore US sanctions law and spend $5 billion to purchase the Triumf missile system.

Its nice to know India is fine with this and will carry on spending billions on weapons instead of feeding it's poor , weapons which make no difference in real terms.

It is not by choice that India spends this money. India lives in a dangerous neighborhood. To the north is the world's largest dictatorship. The the west is Pakistan, whose Army controls a country that is close to bankruptcy yet has the world's fastest growing nuclear arsenal.

Even if India feels its neccesasy, it wont make much of a difference in real terms.

This is such a poor argument.

Why do you feel buying more and more weapons will make a difference?

I am sure India has a separate budget for Army and other areas. So everytime they spend on army or something else one cannot just yell you have this many poor people - feed them first bla bla bla.

There will always be poor people. That does not mean you stop investning in all other areas.

India was ruled for 200 years by British and throughout history been invaded several times, so one can understand they want a strong army to protect themselves.

India is a nuisance to China. India is no where near to cause any issue to China.

Pakistan and India aren’t going in all out war.

Hysteria and fear mongering politics created by right wing radicalized extremist nationalists Hindu to stay relevant. They will spend money on weaponary than human development.

There are no friends or enemies in politics.. It’s all about mutual benefits.

In fact I doubt even Indian and Pakistani leaders care about the actual issues between two countries. Peace and conflict are the tools for them to get elected and they would use whatever swerves their purpose at any given time. It’s sad people are so stupid not to even realize this by now.

Nonetheless Pak and Russia are more friends as compared to the old days. Of course it's all about interests. Things could be different again in ten years time. No friendship is permanent as you say but this is a slap on the face again of those who said we've been isolated.
