What's new

Saad Ali : An attacking middle-order batsman

Does anyone have video on Saad he's got really good numbers but I have never seen him play

After 30 List A matches Saad Ali:

Averages 64 at a SR of 85. Hit another fifty in his last match in the regional one day tournament.

And yet Asad Shafiq is selected in ODIs and not Saad Ali  Inzi is not good

I Have seen him bat. Looks genuinely good batsman and not just stats wonder like Fakhar Zaman and co.

When will have these attacking players in the team?? Do we have anyone in the board who's serious about our cricket? In the past atleast we had captains who took the initiative to hunt for talent and build strong team now our captains have become yes men for the cricket board with zero interest in grooming talent.

Well it looks like Saad Ali is on the selectors radar - called up to the LOI training camp for the WI tour.

a good decision by Inzi; he should make the squad on merit; lets see if Inzi has the guts to do that

With Haris, Umar and Rizwan struggling, Umar Amin still recovering from an injury, Shafiq showing he can't play ODIs for his life, Sharjeel banned, and Sami Aslam showing that he's made for Tests, I really won't mind if Saad Ali gets an opportunity in the ODI squad.

Hope he gets a call.

Whoever called him attacking needs an EEG atleast :-)

Yes slight resemblance with Alaister Cook but he is not fit for limited overs cricket. Might make Test team in future provided he has 2 high scoring FC seasons.

Had to look him up to see how he is doing now and his first class career has stalled. Any ideas why? 40 games in 4-5 years doesn't seem right and his batting average is 41 which is middling really.

The list A numbers look good though but how is he striking the ball? Is he hitting long boundaries? Sixes? Or accumulating the runs ? He scored a 66 recently, how many balls was that off?

Just as he had started to look very good after all the hard work he gives it away :-(

I think he should remain in Pak A list A and Four day squad but his strongest format will be four day. He will be competing with Haris, Amin, Saud, Usman etc so it will be tough. He is quite consistent which is his strong point.

Brother Fawad Alam would be a better option for test matches which is a format made for him.

Usman, Haris and Amin also look better players than Saad who has looked extremely limited.

I think fawad deserves it the most and he will average 50 to 55 in Tests in UAE, BD, SL & Zim but he is definitely most limited.

Because Saad hasn't scored much in this tourney hence he was playing within himself as it was final and he wanted to make a statement. He has started to hit couple of good boundaries and he got out. Still I think he won't make it as a successful Odi player but definitely he will be in picture for Test Cricket provided he has a good FC season.

I agree with asfandyar and another guy that Saad has some resemblance with Alaister Cook.

I hoped that He and Agha score a fifty in final but they got out at wrong time.

Usman & Amin have consistency issues but both are good. For me if Haris clears fitness test He should replace Younis or Misbah in the Test playing eleven.

Was the perfect time to deliver. Pitches tailor-made for big scores, yet Saad gave it all away. Sigh. Unfortunately has moved below Umar Amin in the reckoning.

I didn't saw him play.. but the guy seems good. As he made 23 off 33 without boundaries

Could have elevated himself closer to national selection but a disappointing tournament means he's gone down the pecking order.

Scored 175 for UBL against Lahore Whites in round 2 of QeA.

Scored 67 vs FATA in round 3 of QeA.

Impressive start to the season so far. He is currently the third highest scorer in the tournament. What makes this particularly notable is that he has only batted in three innings. Everyone else in the top 10 run scorers has had 5/6 innings.

Scored a 99-ball 93 in round 4 vs Rawalpindi.

Shame he missed out on the century, but he is certainly making the most of every opportunity in this year's QeA.

4 innings so far, and he has scored 2 50s and 1 century.

Moves to within 10 runs of becoming leader run scorer in QeA this year, having scored an unbeaten 37* in the 2nd innings v Pindi.

The only person ahead of him is Amin who has played 2 more innings.

Poor mans Asad Shafiq. He's technically slightly stronger but his mental game is worse than Asad's, and that's saying a lot.

Still warrants selection in both ODIs and tests. Asad is an anomaly, let us not get carried away with conjectures.

If you watched him in the Pakistan Cup you'd see exactly why.

I didn't watch most of the PC due to time commitments but I heard he struggled. But how do you know it wasn't just a bad run of form? Even if it wasn't can we really rule him out of the longer format based on a poor one day tournament?

He has been a consistent performer, especially in the longer format, and he has definitely worked on his S/R (compare his S/R in last year's QeA with this year's and there is a massive improvement). We all know how difficult the pitches are, and yet he is the second highest run scorer having scored in pretty much every game he has played. He has also played fewer innings than everyone else in the top 10 run scorers, which tells you that once he is set he scores big.

I'm not saying he is the next Bradman but I don't think we should write him off so quickly, especially for the longer format.

Wow! 140 off just 127 balls from Saad Ali against Pakistan TV! He's still not out so he could be looking for a quick 200-300 and he could very well find himself in the next Pakistan test squad. That's a good SR for List A standards let alone FC

He has been very good this season specially given the nature of wickets that are being produced in the ongoing tournament. I hope he finds himself as part of Pak team in the near future.

Double Century Achieved:108: - Need a to continue doing like this the entire season and hopefully we can groom someone for the future.

Too many performing well in domestic cricket. A good problem to have for the selectors.

Only 2 performing with bat to be honest - both are lefti, rest are just a flash in the pan, either too new or too old - over all stats are not that good. Can't say about pacers - everyone looks unplayable, but Raja Hasan has been out standing - stats doesn't tell anything, because most of his matches produced 1000+ runs or 300+ 1st innings; but he is bowling long, long spells, and getting wickets at tight economy.

Looked ordinary in the Pakistan Cup as Ellipsism said but would like to see more of him before making a judgment

Lets see him play. Some guys look poor in domestic cricket but become beasts at the higher level.

He was playing on pretty true pitches. He just looked very limited and lacked timing even after spending time out there. I can look past the lack of runs if there's ability but he didn't show anything to impress.

Lets see, but he seems to be on fire this season and with an incredible strike rate.

I sincerely believe that he can replace Sami Aslam, Shan Masood, Asaad Shafiq, Babar Azam. So many open spots in Tests. So many opportunities for this Young lad. Inshallah he will get a debut in the very next Test Pakistan plays.

232 off 255 with 37 fours.

I have been mentioning his excellent form even before this 200. To be honest, given PTV's weak bowling attack, I am less impressed at this 200 than I am his other innings in this year's QeA. However, I am happy that knock has meant others are finally giving him the attention he deserves.

His ability to dig in on tough pitches and scores runs is impressive, as is his consistency. Round 6 has been his only real failure and even then looking at the scorecard it looks like the pitch was a batsman's graveyard.

Putting runs aside, last year his strike rate in the QeA was 48.39. This year, despite the pitches, it is 77. That's a huge improvement.

Mr Consistent strikes again.

Scored 44 (58) in round 7 vs Habib Bank. Team total was 178 so good effort from him.

He is currently 25* in the second innings. Hoping for a big score tomorrow.

Watched him play during the pakistan cup. Very good against spin, but can't play pace.

His poor performance in the Pakistan Cup is why I don't think he should be included in the LOI squad.

However, the fact remains in the QeA he has stood tall and delivered on pitches where seamers are running riot. For that reason, I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and I think he is a good option for the longer format.

Let's see how he does before writing him off.

SSA should be a better LO player. At one time, he had stats like 80/100 for first 12-15 innings, but his last PAK Cup was poor and they didn't pick him for PSL. Strike rotation might be a problem for No. 5/6 spot (I haven't seen enough); but his high % of boundary suggests, he can bat up in the order.

If a guy can score at 95/75 stats in PAK domestic FCs these days, it's really, really, really difficult to believe that the guy can't do better than Ahmed, Azhar, MoHa, Sarfraz, Imam in LO format.

Not a big fan of him from what i have seen tbh but he deserves a go in test at no 6 (can play fast) just because of his legendary stats this season where almost no other batsman crossed an avg of 50. I don't think it will be right to call him a bad player just because he didnt click in the 1 match i saw.

I mentioned in his talent spotter thread that I want to hear why he thinks he struggled in the One Day Cup and given his much improved performance in the QeA, what changes, if any, he had made to his game.

Which match are you referring to? The Pakistan A game?

His significant increase in his S/R in this years QeA suggests he is a real grafter who understands his game. On paper, he seems like a good prospect for tests.

Yep Pak A (or was it u-19) which was televised on ptv when he played around 10 list A matches and his average was up in the 80s. And glimpses of him playing with Ramiz Aziz in recent Pak cup. Both times didn't look fluent but may be he had off days.

I really want to see him more now.

Same, but footage is very limited at the moment.

your views on Saud?

Saud Shakeel?

Special talent, especially for tests. Makes batting look effortless. I mentioned in one of the other threads if he is properly invested in he will become a mainstay of the middle order. Strong off his legs and his cover drive is Sangakarra-esque.

He has struggled a little on the last couple of A tours, but is putting in some good performances in this year's QeA which shows he is repaying the faith that has been put in him. This should hopefully mean Inzi selects him for the next A tour.

He still needs to develop his game in the shorter format though.

What are your thoughts on him?

Yes Saud Shakeel. Well said :)
I think we dont need someone like him in odi right now. But for tests he certainly is the future.

Has excellent stats so far.

Itching to watch some videos on him. One for the future but too soon to say.

Any one here know what kind of technique this lad has?

Agreed. He always looks like he has a lot of time when he bats which is always a good sign.

Just imagine Saud and Haris batting together in tests. That would be a sight to behold.

If you watched him in the Pakistan Cup you'd see exactly why.

Yes I watched him in Pakistan cup where batted a little low down the order and looks hesitant to play shots as his team needs him in the crease but his strokes are good and looked he has a good technique..

I think he has improved his game and pushed himself forward. May be not the same player he was in pakistan cup..

That's not accurate. His team didn't need him to stay at the crease. The openers for his side were Farhan and Fakhar who were two of the leading run scorers and in most games they set up excellent platforms from which the rest of the batsmen could launch. Sadly, Saad couldn't capitalise because he is not that type of player.

Let him focus on the longer format for now.

The most successful team in Pool B of Quaid e Azam Trophy, United Bank Limited(led by Hammad Azam) is on the verge of 6th victory it has won 5 and lost 1 (the only match which their captain Hammad Azam could'nt play due to being on national duty for Pakistan team in Hong Kong sixes) in the 6 matches its played before the current match.

Saad Ali has scored 755 runs in 7* matches of Quaid e Azam Trophy, Average:94.4 SR:77

Hammad was only temporary captain. Shan Masood is captaining UBL.

Just checked, Hammad Azam has lead UBL 3 out of 6 and won all 3, Shan Masood is leading the side with the current match his 3rd as captain. Akbar ur Rehman lead for 1 match.
Nothing to speak on Shan Masood's individual performance.

Yes but he was a stand in captain.

COMPARISON BETWEEN SAMI ASLAM, SHAN MASOOD & BABAR AZAM IN TEST FORMAT :

1. Sami Aslam - Got chance in 13 Tests, played 25 Innings, NO Centuries, Scored 758 runs with the Average of 31.58, very low strike rate of 39.11, failed regularly in last 3 Test tours.

2. Shan Masood - Got chance in 12 Tests, played 24 innings, 1 Century (125), scored 565 runs with the Average of 23.54, very low strike rate of 40.29, failed regularly in last 3 Test tours.

3. Babar Azam - Brilliant ODI player, but FAILED in Test Format, Got chance in 11 Tests, played 22 innings, No Centuries, scored 475 runs with the Average of 23.75, very low strike rate of 44.18, failed regularly in last 3 Test tours.

All 3 has almost similar record in the TESTS. Still we want to select them again. Why ?.. On what merit they should be selected instead of SAAD ALI - the HIGHEST RUNS SCORER in QUAID E AZAM TROPHY 2017-18

If inzi ignores him for nz tour and next test tour he should give explanation.

he can be picked, has been good in list A and in Fc he scored with good pace but not a t20 player.

Did poorly in the most recent One Day Cup.

Will definitely be picked for the England tour, but there are other batsmen ahead of him for ODIs.
