Anyone arguing whether Geo doesn't deserve a ban after today needs their head examined.

What? How have the opposition managed to mess this up? Didn't they have a majority??

Surely this is the end for them. Poor Bilawal, poor Maryam, poor Diesel.

So only 53 needed to send him packing. At the start of session 64 stood up and said they would vote him out but only 50 did so. Who are the 14 sneaky ones. :))

They had at least 64 votes but in the end 14 of their senators ended up voting against the party decision...

Second blow for PMLN in Senate within a year...

Sadiq Sanjrani survives no-confidence vote in shock victory; opposition falls 3 short

In a shock victory for the government and its allied parties, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani on Thursday survived a motion of no-confidence pushed by the opposition.

Mere hours before the final result, the resolution to move a no-confidence vote against Sanjrani had been passed comfortably by opposition senators, with 64 voting in its favour.

Needing only 53 of the 64 senators' votes to send Sanjrani packing, the opposition instead fell three short when the results of the secret ballot were announced.

The final vote count was 50 votes in favour of the motion, five votes rejected, and 45 cast against.

Having falling short of a simple majority of the house, the motion was dismissed.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan promptly hailed the result as "the victory of Pakistan's narrative".

Shock result

This is the first time the upper house of parliament has tabled no-confidence motions against its chairman and deputy chairman. The motion against Sanjrani was submitted by opposition members last month. A similar motion was submitted by the government senators against Senate Deputy Chairman Mandviwala in a ***-for-tat move.

The opposition has a total of 67 members. PML-N's Chaudhry Tanvir, who has reportedly fallen ill, was not in attendance. Out of the remaining 66 senators, two belong to the Jamaat-i-Islami, which decided to abstain from the proceedings.

The government and it's allies constituted the remaining 36 members, all of whom were present today.

Senator Javed Abbasi was appointed the polling agent on behalf of the opposition, while Senator Nauman Wazir was appointed on behalf of the government.

At the beginning of the session, Barrister Saif directed senators who were in favour of the no-confidence resolution against Sanjrani tabled by the opposition to stand. About 64 senators had stood up in support.

Opposition Leader in the Senate Raja Zafarul Haq had then moved the resolution but said that the opposition will not make any speeches even though the rules allow a debate.

PTI Senator Shibli Faraz had also waived his right to make a speech, saying that the government wishes for the motion to be put directly to the vote.

Following these announcements, Barrister Saif read out the rules for voting on the resolution. He said that the doors of the hall will remain closed as long as voting is underway.

The results of the final count of the vote, conducted through a secret ballot, dealt a major blow to the opposition's claims of having enough support.

Can you explain why this vote was a big deal

Opposition wanted to show their power and build a narrative that govt is getting weak. They were also testing the waters with this move before launching a country wide campaign against the govt I guess they got the answer now...

I have never in history of Pakistan seen an opposition humiliated as this opposition has.Still remember imran lhan words "Mai in ko rulayoon Ga!!"

I think there is a law that a no confidence can only happen once in 6 months or so? Otherwise we will see it happening every month.

Haha this is hilarious. Mein in ko rulaonga.

PPP and PMLn have cheated on each other many many times. PMLn has cheated on PPP more in recent times. No way AAZ was going to join hands with PMLn, specially at a time when he is negotiating with Govt to come out of jail.

so its ok to give money but wrong to take it?

wasn't corruption bad from both sides?? no?

Jehangir tareen should help out his son and pay there psl dues rather than bribing voters.

You are overlooking other factors.First of all, AAZ is in negotiations with Govt for sum of money he has to return back in order to come out of jail. Secondly, Why would AAZ trust PMLn when he has been victim of PMLn betrayals repeatedly.

Imran proposed to change secret ballot to avoid situations like this a couple of years ago but PMLN and PPP refused it because it was in their favor at that time... #JustAFact

Who has taken or given bribes. If it was really about money Pmln and PPP thieves have more money than Pakistan government currently selling the seat to them would have been more profitable than selling it to Pti goverment.

In cricketing parlance this is losing after enforcing the follow-on.

I heard another meeting was called by opposition after the defeat and again 64 senators appeared? Wth man :))

whats interesting is 5 votes were rejected. i wonder why

whats interesting is 5 votes were rejected. i wonder why

I think because they were double stamped.

Only way that would happen is if some opposition voters wanted their ballots to be rejected.

Looks like pmln got some moles in their ranks :lara

whats interesting is 5 votes were rejected. i wonder why

It regularly happens in these NA/PA and Senate elections some members play safe and stamp both candidates to stay neutral.

So both Senators of JI boycotted this election. Siraj lala loves playing on both side of the wicket :))

whats interesting is 5 votes were rejected. i wonder why

So that conspiracy mongers can spend time discussing it rather than ask for accountability from the young Romanovs

Looks like some votes were bought and some disqualified.

The whole affair looks fishy otherwise there was no way the opposition could lose despite being in majority.

There were reports of a number of pmln members who were unhappy with their party, meeting pti leadership.

Pmln may very well have a few members looking to jump ship.

Possible a few from other parties as well.

Inshallah the corruption bachao alliance will remain defeated

This is called beating them at their own game :))

I remember when Imran Khan asked for open voting in Senate, he was mocked and insulted for being ignorant and Zardari was called smartest brain who managed to win senate seats from KPK despite having only 3-4 MPAs.

How do you like the smartness now??

Having said all that, i think these senate elections are disgraceful. Secret ballot should never be allowed to elect senators or chairman. I think PTI government must introduce changes and opposition must support it to change this disgraceful practice once for all.

So establishment wasn't at play when PPP got more thn their share of senate seats from KP and Sindh and it was called smart politics by Zardari and when PPP is on receiving end now it's establishment ki saazish all of a sudden? :))
