SAFF Championship 2018 - September 4-15

This is boring, no real drama or emotions on show. Both sides are taking it just like any other match.

Think he was talking about India qualifying for the WC. They have qualified for the next Asia Cup in 2019 though. That tournament will give a better idea about Indias standing among decent Asian teams.

SAFF offers no challenge for India.
 
India ends Pakistan's fairy-tale run at SAFF Championship

India defeated Pakistan 3-1 in the semi-final of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The defeat ended Pakistan's fairy-tale run in the tournament, where the Men in Green — taking part at an international event after three years — exceeded everyone's expectations.

Even in defeat, the Pakistan players gave a good account of their game, holding a far higher-ranked Indian side to a goalless first half before all hell broke loose in the second.

Their resistance ended in the 49th minute when India's Ashique Kuruniyan delivered a low ball that was poked home by striker Manvir Singh.

Singh got his second of the night in the 69th minute before Sumeet Passi added a third seven minutes from time.

Things went from bad to worse for the national team when defender Mohsin Ali was sent off, reducing the side to 10 men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Pakistan found a late consolation but by that time India had effectively sealed the win and booked their berth in the final opposite Maldives.

Exactly India has qualified for Asian cup and will be their 4th appearance previously qualifying in 2011 with that being said the national team has come a long way they youth team looks solid India even hosted a u17 Fifa World Cup. Have developed a football culture within the country. They just need to be a top 6 side In Asia in the next five years which is more than possible as mentioned I can see them qualifying for a Fifa World Cup in ten years because also the number of teams will increase as well

Agree with you. Cant see them qualifying for 2022 WC but 2026 WC is surely in their hands.

Not going to happen in 2026. Did an analysis a couple of months back on this on another thread.

In summary, from 2026 onwards, Asia gets 8 places.

So, in order for India to even challenge for a WC spot, India needs to be consistently in top 10.

Right now India is 14th in the rankings. But in actuality, its more like 18th because we have been played some weaker teams lately.

For 2026 WC, the qualifiers start in 2023. For 2030, in 2027.

So, the question is whether India can become a top 10 team in 5 years. No.
In 9 years. Possibly.
But I would expect them to be in top 10 by 2031 (for the 2034 WC).
Thats because we need a couple of generations of players before the overall quality improves. Kids who are starting to not just watch ISL on TV, but also who have started playing at a young age of 5-6, will be the ones taking us to a WC.
 
Honestly i expect India to qualify for 2030 football wc.

They have come a long way from what i saw of them last time in mid 2000s.
 
3-1 loss to India hurts but it was expected. I'm glad the Shaheens held India to a goal-less first half, but the same problem of lack of fitness emerged and they let in three goals. This suggests to me that technically the team is not so bad, and the coaches tactics were really good as well. They lost due to lack of fitness which is something that can be improved rapidly with proper focus. Good signs for the future.


With the recent task force by IK to recommend improvement in sports, I hope football is given its due importance as well. We need a league on the model of ISL. Let it run for five-six years and then see the team's performance. There is so much footballing talent in places like Lyari, Makran etc.

exactly what i think will happen for them as well, they should qualify for that world cup, hoping around that time period realistically speaking if Pakistan takes huge step forward on improvement of the game for both national team, and grass root level, and have professional proper league structure, than we as a team can feature in Asia cup tournament at least.

They have good youth teams coming up. And I saw their recent results, they have beaten likes of Kenya twice who have beaten Ghana recently, they have beaten Kyrgyzstan recently who are above them in rankings. I agree with you that they might not be #96 exactly but I think they should be at least 110 in rankings. And their youth teams are beating Argentina. So you have good future. 2026 might be a good chance. Not certain but a very good chance

Asian competition has gone very competitive now. Its very hard to even qualify for Asian cups

Under the Asian Federation these are current subdivisions

West Asia Football Federation
South Asia Football Federation
East Asia Football Federation
South East Asia Football Federation

However, the number of teams are fixed for the Primary Asian federations and not the subdivisions.

So why should it be easy for India?

Keep dreaming. India has literally no chance to make even to the knock outs of even AFC forget qualifying for world cup. We have hard time qualifying for AFC even.

I didnt understand how places for the world cup are allocated thats why I was curious..

Few years back we where struggling to beat SC countries , now we beat them comfortably even with our U23 team ( infact this is not even or best U23 team as some well known names are missing and U19 team is in Europe)

I dont think its unimaginable for us get ahead likes of UAE and Lebanon in a few years . Our age group teams used to struggle against these teams 10 years back , lately we have been trashing them and competing with top tier teams . We have never had this kind of talent and in 5 years time the current lot will be replaced by a much superior bunch in every sense . Watch some matches of our U16/U19s against likes of Jpn , IRQ or even Fra/Arg , its not as embarrassing as it used to be !

True. I have watched some matches and the U19/16s age group looks by far the most impressive. They keep up with some top sides and that's encouraging.
 
Congratz to Maldives beat India 2-1 congratz to maldives for winning, and also congratz to india their u23 meet all the way to the finals, clearly their team ( youth and senior ) is the strongest in south asia, hopefully next saff cup which will take place in Pakistan, the tournament will be more competitive as well

Yeah, I checked recently your U19 team beat Argentina. Thats amazing. They have great talent coming up
