Sarfaraz announced this during pre-match press conference.

Once again we'll see the brilliance of Shehzad at the top...

No doubt he'll score a decent knock off a gazillion deliveries and will cement his place.

Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan captain, has urged his team to maintain a ruthless approach and the winning momentum in the second day-night One-Day International against Sri Lanka at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Monday (October 16).

Pakistan went 1-0 up in the five-match series with a clinical 83-run win in the first game in Dubai on Friday. Led by Babar Azam (103) and Shoaib Malik (81), the batsmen did their job by posting 292 for 6 in their 50 overs before Hasan Ali and Rumman Raees shared six wickets to keep Sri Lanka down to 209 for 8.

That result gave Pakistan a five-match winning streak, while Sri Lanka slumped to their eighth consecutive loss.

Sarfraz hoped his team would live up to expectations after the Champions Trophy triumph in June. “We did well in the first ODI,” said Sarfraz on Sunday. “We played well and the team gave an all-round performance, so the expectations are high for the second game as well. We have prepared well. It’s another important match and we will take it one match at a time.”

With seemingly all bases covered, it was no surprise that Sarfraz announced an unchanged XI for Monday’s game. But he called on his batsmen to be more proactive in the first ten overs.

“We missed a few things and would like to improve on that,” said Sarfraz. “We didn’t take very many singles in the first ten overs, so we have to address that.

Teams:

Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (capt, wk), Ahmed Shehzad, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Hafeez, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, Rumman Raees, Junaid Khan.

Sri Lanka (from): Upul Tharanga (capt), Dinesh Chandimal, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Mendis, Milinda Siriwardana, Chamara Kapugedera, Thisara Perera, Seekuge Prasanna, Nuwan Pradeep, Suranga Lakmal, Dushmantha Chameera, Vishwa Fernando, Akila Dananjaya, Jeffrey Vandersay.

“It’s important to build the team towards the 2019 World Cup,” he added. “We are giving consistent chances to youngsters, and that will be the key towards that event.”

Nic Pothas, the Sri Lanka coach, urged his batsmen to stand up and be counted. “Obviously they ended up getting too many runs on that wicket,” he said of the first ODI. “From a batting point of view, the currency of your batting is runs. If you don’t keep making them, the shop is going to close down at some point.

“We have to ask the batters to take some responsibility. The top six batters managed 96 between them. One batter got 53 and you are not going to get too many (if that’s the case).”

Sri Lanka have now failed to post a 250-plus total in their last seven matches, and Pothas admitted that the team was low on confidence.

“Confidence is a big thing. When you lose two of the legends of your game, it is a massive thing but on the flip side, Pakistan have got very experienced players,” he pointed out. “They have won the Champions Trophy and they are flying high. We have to find answers, and find them quick.”

Sri Lanka might tinker with their bowling, bringing in Vishwa Fernando, the left-arm quick, for Lahiru Gamage.

Think they want to win the series then make changes.

A change at the top won't destabilise the side for goodness sake. I can't believe they're so reluctant to change things.

We can just hope that Shehzad has another shocker tomorrow and is finally dropped for good.

But he seems to be the team management's favourite and I expect him to continue playing despite zero performance.

It is that garbage mentality of "don't change winning combination"

This is why our fate is doomed. Now Shehzad will probably get a snail-paced 50, or worse, a 100(!) and cement his place in the side.

Why are people amazed? It's how Pakistan always has gone with business. Even during Misbah's time we hardly changed a winning team and many passengers got gazillion of chances.

Inzi and Mickey have made it clear that they will not drop any player after a few poor innings. So bear it for the time being.

Sad for Haris, but that's how things work there these days. We saw it with Shan Masood as well.

Im convinced it's the way to go, no player should feel afraid about getting dropped. I'm only dissApointed for Fahim Ashraf. I really want to see this guy get a fair run

His time will come somewhere next year. We haven't even seen yet what he is fully capable of with the bat.

Why are we confirming our playing XI so the opposition can make plans? Why can't you announce the team at the toss.....

Doesn't really matter in this case. I am sure Lanka expected the same team as well. Plus Sarfraz probably showing he has faith in his team.

Some of the plans for the opposition are pretty simple. Dont let Pakistan bat first. Dont allow Shahzad any room up to (not that it matters if he is allowed room). Possibly select a couple of right handers for the middle order so it weakens the off-spinner tactic against them.

Yea I was surprised when Lanka decided to bowl first. I know Indians and Lankans (esp. with Matthews) love chasing a total, but Pakistan is so pathetic batting under pressure that the opposition captain has no other choice then to bat first.

Also the fact that the Lankans saw how Pak collapsed under pressure in the tests. It was a strange choice.

Not surprising actually, I almost knew it. Probably they won't change the order either.

I don't want Shehzad to fail, I want him to do well so when can finally put to bed our opening conundrums.

We, as fans, want an aggressive partner for Fakhar [or whomever bats at the top]. If he can be that batsmen that fair enough, but will he be able to change the way he's been batting the last few years in this series...I doubt it.

Shehzad is not the answer. He has been playing for Pakistan for almost a decade now. Time to move on. He does not have the ability to rotate strike. At least he could bash Bangladesh a few years ago. Now even that is beyond him.

Get Babar to open and give him the role Amla does for SA. Push Haris to 3, Safi to 4, Prof at 5 and Malik 6.

Not happening. Mickey wants the best guy at 3.

I have been Shehzad,s supporter , to some extend in the past but for team.s sake now I want him to be dropped , for ever and put on ECL.
Like many on the forum , I'm also worried he might score some runs tomorrow just to prolong the torture .
At some point you want a player in the team to fail, for team's sake , it was the same reason I wanted Misbah to fail in West Indies, after his disaster run of failure down under.

Agreed with every word.

Would be a simple change and play to the strengths of our batsmen.

Shezzy is the new Umar Akmal of pakistan. "Talented" couldn't capitalize on his talent

i like this strategy of announcing the playing 11 a day before

I'm sure it helps calms the nerve of a few players in the final 24 hours

I feel this could be last chance saloon for Ahmed Shehzad.

Another failure and he's in trouble.

What gets me is that surely the team plan should be to get of to a decent start and babar lays anchor and everybody bats around him. (On the basis he can avg 55 at 90sr-in case people ask "why him")
If shezzy tries to do that then it makes babar a bit redundant and stagnates the innings especially if fakhar falls early.
If babar falls early then hafeez n malik are capable of anchoring.
So all in all why do the think tank persist with shehzad

I think this is Shehzad's last chance. If he fails this time, he's going to be out of team for a long time.

And quite justified!! The man has had a fair share of games to his name and is still an under performer. It just makes me cringe whenever i see his name in the playing XI
