I did not reply because I was away for a week.
I am not debating that Misbah was a better ODI captain than Sarfraz or that Pakistan could have fluked the Champions Trophy under Misbah as well.
However, Pakistan’s 2019 World Cup was no better or worse than the 2015 World Cup. The only difference is that the 2019 World Cup format was more forgiving and gave weaker teams more opportunities to spring surprise results.
In the 2015 World Cup, Pakistan was grouped with the following teams: India, South Africa, West Indies, Ireland, UAE and Zimbabwe.
Pakistan beat South Africa, Ireland, UAE and Zimbabwe.
Pakistan lost to India and West Indies.
You swap Misbah’s team with Sarfraz’s 2019 side, and which result will change?
We always get flogged by India in World Cups, we have been getting hammered by West Indies in tournaments for years including in 2019 where the opening match destroyed our net run rate.
We beat South Africa in both World Cups, but the 2015 South African side was far stronger than the 2015 one.
Sarfraz’s 2019 would also stand a 0% chance of 2015 Australia in Australia, so Pakistan would have been eliminated in the QF anyway.
If Misbah’s Pakistan was playing in the 2019 format, i.e. a match against every team than it could also have produced a couple of more upsets.
Pakistan’s 2019 World Cup was a poor campaign. In spite of having the best possible preparation among all teams by playing 5 ODIs vs England in England right before the World Cup, they responded with a typical Pakistan style mediocre performance in the World Cup opener against West Indies.
The 105 all out with West Indies chasing the total in 14 overs completely nuked our NRR and we had one foot out of the door since that moment.
The win vs England was undoubtedly a brilliant result, but we also got thrashed by India and bottled it against Australia. We also bottled it against Afghanistan and needed umpiring blunders to get over the line. Afghanistan should have won that match because Imad was plumb LBW when he was on 0.
As far as beating New Zealand on a slow pitch is concerned, it was a good result but let’s not overhype that win because New Zealand ended up losing the World Cup final by an inch. New Zealand were not a great team in that tournament. Their journey to the final was circumstantial and they had some luck going their way.
England, India and Australia, irrespective of the order, where the three best teams in that World Cup and two of the three deserved to play in the final.
It was going to be that way until South Africa spoiled the party with the dead-rubber win over Australia in the last group game, which changed the equation from England vs India and Australia vs New Zealand semifinals to England vs Australia and New Zealand vs India.
Also in the semifinal vs India, they were heading for a defeat before they got a lucky break with the rain that killed India’s momentum and allowed New Zealand seamers to exploit the early morning moisture the other day.
If it did not rain the previous day and New Zealand were to bowl in the afternoon, there is a 90% chance that India would have won the match. It was a slow pitch and without the early morning moisture, New Zealand seamers would have struggled like they did against Pakistan. It would have been a similar run chase.
As far as beating Sri Lanka is concerned, I agree that Pakistan would be favorites, but let’s not pretend that Pakistan was 100% favorites.
If Pakistan and Sri Lanka could beat England, Pakistan could survive against Afghanistan due to umpiring howlers and Afghanistan could push India to the last over, Sri Lanka could have also beaten Pakistan.
Moreover, let’s not forget that that the India vs New Zealand group match was washed out as well, and New Zealand would have had a good chance in that game because it was at Trent Bridge on a fresh pitch, and not on the cattle grazing field of Edgbaston on which Pakistan beat New Zealand.
Based on the completed games, Pakistan were not unluckily and did not deserve to quality for the SF. Pakistan had the second worst NRR among all teams which was embarrassing and summed up the mediocrity of Pakistan cricket.
Compared to Pakistan, New Zealand did deserve to quality for the semifinals (but not beyond that) because they managed their NRR better and were one of the four teams with a positive NRR.
