Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz brought 1,500 people, a golden escalator and his own carpets on his historic, four-day state visit to Russia, a person familiar with the matter said.

The 81-year-old leader of the Gulf kingdom exited his plane late on Wednesday and stepped out onto the special escalator he travels with. But something went wrong: It malfunctioned halfway down, and he had to walk the rest of the way. A cavalcade of cars sped the monarch to the centre of the city, flanked by Russian police escorts.

During the first visit to Russia by a Saudi monarch, the two countries have already struck a deal on weapons sales and discussed ways to continue to cooperate on stabilising the oil market. And as they have done in other cities, the Saudis made themselves at home in Moscow.

A Saudi plane is travelling daily between Riyadh and Moscow to transport supplies, said the person, who said that 800 kilogrammes (1,764 pounds) of food has been brought in. Members of the royal entourage also replaced some of the hotel staff with their own personnel, who know exactly how they like their coffee made, the person said. King Salman, who’s staying at the Four Seasons, also came with his own furniture.

The Saudi government booked two entire luxury hotels for the visit: the Ritz Carlton and the Four Seasons. The latter had to ask some guests to cancel their reservations to make room—and even moved out people who live in the hotel permanently, people familiar with the matter said.

A doorman dressed in red livery at the Four Seasons said the entire hotel was booked through 8 October and wasn’t open to the public.

Representatives from the Ritz and Four Seasons declined to comment. The Royal Court in Riyadh didn’t respond to a request for comment on size of the delegation.

All due to grace of God that He has blessed His Excellency with such riches and bounties.

Very old man - has a huge responsibility to lead the Kingdom and doing a good job. Obviously the jealousy of some has no bounds.

Feel sorry for those maintaining the escalator.

"Off with their heads!"

What a graceful entrance by the majesty. Next I want to see him with a Russian fur hat.

Jealous of how old he is? Or jealous he can't use the stairs anymore? :65:

Do you not see that there is a lack of humility in those actions?

Not sure there is anything there to be jealous about.

I feel that Saudis are criticized for having money more than the average rich person.

Yes they have issues but so do others.

The problem is not having money. Its the crass display of money. And the issue is not with the Saudis, but their royals.

And pointing out that crass display of money is not jealousy or hypocrisy. There are enough extremely rich people in the world who have used their money for betterment rather than just showing it off. And everyone has a right to criticise that crass display of money.

Obviously, like the Saudi royals, there are others have the same problem. And they should be criticised too.

Damn that's rich, don't see why people criticise them it's their money they can blow it as they want, people of Saudi have the right to criticise them not Indians or Pakistanis

You can live your life with a bare minimum amount of money why do you buy a car a fancy house branded clothes etc? Why don't you give all money apart from bare minimum you need to the poor?

It's their money they can do whatever they want the only people who have the right to criticise them are the citizens of Saudi Arabia others don't have right to criticise them for the way they use their own money.. Sure they can give it to poor and all but that's their call not yours or anyone else's.

"I feel that Saudis are criticized for having money more than the average rich person."

No, they are criticised for the spread and funding of extremist ideology.

A good job?

Under his rule we’ve seen the war and humanitarian disaster in Yemen as well as the proxy wars in places like Syria and Libya.

Do you really think Salman has done a good job?

actually it is not god that has blessed this joker, it is the heavy hand of the united states, the most formidable nation in the history of this world, on the scale, in the favor of this regime.

and fossil fuels.

they are not criticized for having money, they are criticized for human rights violations, an authoritarian regime, a blind eye to the syrian crisis, and support for wahabist movements that are destabilizing the only islamic democracies in the world (outside of Turkey) - Pakistan, Indonesia and Bangladesh.

They are dictators and looting their own country and selling it down the drain. They claim to be protectors of our holy lands and yet live lives completely opposite to our Prophet and his faithful caliphs. They don’t live like them and they don’t lead like them. These are not elected officials or Amirs or Caliphs, this is a dictatorship and monarchy of filthy selfish totalitarian leaders who have live it up like it’s their god given right. They have drained the land of its natural resources and sold it to their American and European friends. They sponsor and incite hatred and violence in Muslim countries and turn a deaf ear to the plight of other fellow Muslims.

This news is a source for shame for them and also for those who revere the Saudi royal family as if they are heaven sent angels. They are nothing but despots and looters!

The true muslIm leaders and our great caliphs lived simple and humble lives. They shunned the wealth and lives of luxury and worked for the common man and the betterment of state. History books will tell you stories of their ways of living.

And look at this!

People don't respect the Saudi royals because they won the lottery before Powerball was a thing.

Plus the lottery winnings are used the promotion of extremist propaganda.

Can be seen first hand in Pakistan.

Also I do not respect living a life of luxury to the extent where you need to bring your own furniture for a hotel room. There is no humility in that.

Once you remove yourself from any kind of personal suffering or challenge and live purely in the dimension of luxury and disturbing wealth then you are sure to lose your humanity.
