A senior member of the Indian cricket team has come under the scanner for violating BCCI's "family clause" rules during the World Cup, where the team made a semifinal exit. The player in question had specifically requested for his wife to stay with him for more than the permissible period of 15 days but it was shot down by the Committee of Administrators (CoA), which had laid down the rules. Now, it has come to light that the player's wife stayed with him for the entire seven-week duration of the tournament without seeking permission from either the captain or the coach for her extended stay.

As per documents in possession of PTI, the CoA in its meeting on May 3 discussed the issue but eventually shot down the request. The Item 6 sub clause G of the minutes of the CoA meeting read: Request from a player 1. The COA discussed that one of the players from the Men's Senior Team had made a request for permission for his wife to accompany him to the World Cup tour earlier than is otherwise permissible. 2. The CoA was informed that the matter is being discussed with the concerned player and that it may not be advisable to grant the request. 3. After some discussion, the CoA decided that it will not accede to the above request from the concerned player. As per minutes of CoA meeting on May 21 (Sec 1 (B) (1) ), the Family Clause stated: "The issue of whether the authority to approve any visits from visitors outside the 'visitor period' should vest with the team captain and coach or with the BCCI management was discussed.

It was noted that the BCCI management has traditionally decided these matters. It was also noted that the BCCI constitution requires cricketing and non-cricketing matters are to be kept separate. A BCCI source privy to the development confirmed to PTI, on conditions of anonymity, that such a violation indeed happened.

"Yes, the same player in question, who was categorically denied permission during May 3 meeting, violated the 15-day rule during the World Cup. The question that arises here is whether the player in question had sought permission about the extra duration of stay of his wife from the competent authorities -- in this case the coach and the captain. The answer is a 'No'," the official said.

The matter is yet to be reported to the Committee of Administrators (CoA) and questions have been raised as to why administrative manager Sunil Subramaniam did not veto the arrangement since it was his domain. "What was Sunil Subramaniam doing? His job is not to monitor team's training sessions.

The coach, captain and other support staff are there to oversee the arrangement. Hopefully, the CoA will take cognisance of the matter and seek a report from the manager," another senior BCCI official said. Subramaniam couldn't be reached for a comment.

Never quite understood this rule, in a long 7 week tournament surely it's better for players to have family with them to help ease the mental pressure. Players are humans after all and do have emotions.

Think this is Rohit Sharma who had his wife and baby daughter accompanying him. Not sure what the fuss is about. The COA should go. These articles serve no purpose and only malign/stress the players

Ghanta scanner.

Truth is that the CoA will not act againist any senior player. The CoA is at odds with virtually everyone in the Bcci and also some former ATG players.

The only way they are ruling is by keeping the present senior players happy.

The sooner these COA jokers are thrown out the better it is.

Will it happen post BCCI elections? Or some bill being passed?

Edulji is scary.

Bcci elections are in october though the SC needs to confirm it.

After that, the CoA,will present the report that elected body has taken over. After thst it is expected that CoA,will be disbanded.

Lolll if it's Rohit, then BCCI should learn the lesson that to get best performance out of your players, make them stay with the wives and family!

Team India captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri have been asked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Committee of Administrators (CoA) to decide on the travel schedules of wives and girlfriends (WAGs) of the players. While the idea had annoyed former Chief Justice RM Lodha, a senior official in the BCCI has reportedly expressed displeasure, saying "such a situation hasn't arisen in the history of the BCCI". Speaking to IANS, a senior board official said that if the stories on the rift in the team weren't bad enough, to now see stories over someone's family travelling and their schedule shows the current state of affairs in the board and how it needs immediate addressing.

"When things are mismanaged and authority and administration give way to ****** decision-making -- a quest for popular opinion and personal favours -- the result can be disastrous.

"Fighting over travel of WAGs? Such a situation hasn't arisen in the history of the BCCI where now there appears to be a general state of discord and even the families of players are seen as fair game for criticism via different agents as has been reported.

"Bizarre reports are emerging about interference from certain family members of players which hasn't gone down well with other players, about someone's family spending more time than was permitted etc.

"In this background, it has also emerged that despite the conflict of interest rules in place, decisions on travel of families will now depend on the captain and coach themselves and everyone has heard Justice Lodha's views on this now," the official said.

"Earlier, during the IPL finals you had the wife of a very senior BCCI executive tell another senior IPL executive how he should conduct himself and this led to the BCCI executive receiving an earful from the IPL executive.

"There is general discord and breakdown and egos seem to be running the show with chips on every shoulder that you can see these days," the official said.

"This has resulted in a serious loss of efficacy in the BCCI and this seriously needs to be corrected and it must be carried out in accordance with the rules governing the running of cricket rather than by general ad-hocism."

Another official said that this blame-game must stop. As for the board all players are equal and should be respected along with their families.

"As far as the BCCI is concerned, every family member of every player is worthy of respect and all are equal and they all know that about us. Stories targeting the families cannot be fair game. Problems arise when decisions seem arbitrary, there would be no problem if there was no perception of arbitrary decision making.

"This has to stop. Rules have to be same for all and there has to be consistency in implementation," the official pointed out.

A board functionary, referring to the decision taken by the CoA in handing the responsibility of WAGs' travel on the coach and captain, said: "The minutes of the meeting say that cricketing and non-cricketing matters should be kept separate. But from when did someone's family travelling become a cricketing decision that the captain or coach will decide on that? Will the selection committee also get involved in their selection?"

Interestingly, the decision was not unanimous and one member of the three-member CoA had refused to agree but was ruled over as the other two gave the go-ahead.
