What's new

Shan Masood - Why is he selected again?

125 in 1 innings
181 in the other 11 innings

Two years since debut, still at point zero.

Thats what happens when you select average club players to represent national team.

Hopefully we don't have to endure him anymore in Pakistan team, not even as a water boy :fiqbal

What I don't like him is that he has zero durability, has no stomach for a fight like Azhar for example.

Bowl him a few wicket-taking deliveries and he is guaranteed to get knocked over, has no ability to tough it out.

Despite having great fitness he is not a clean fielder.

He has missed two easy run outs of Shehzad & Fakhar today which is a Succide in these weather conditions.

Poor stuff :-/

Yeah, saw that - pathetic fielding. No effort and intent shown as well.

The BIGGEST mystery.

I wouldn't be shocked even at the selection of Imran Farhat.

But why is this hopeless case of not even club batsman playing Test matches for the prestigious Pakistan cricket team?

What does he have that other much better bats don't?

This problem will remain till the PCB realizes there is no better option in Pak than Azhar Ali.

One of worst technics in history of the game! god knows why he keeps getting selected

We have got far better option than him.

Knifes are out after one innings. Give him at least the first 2 tests and then reassess.

I am a Qazi fan and wanted him to be selected ahead of Sami and Shan but

Give Shan (fitness) at least 4 innings before taking your knives out.

I tried to give him benefit of doubt but after waching him closely today he is rubbish, this must be neptoism at highest order.

No movement, flat pitch, no Jimmy and still he has no clue whatsoever. Allright the actual dismissal delivery was very good, but prior to that he edged many, were late on the ball and is clear lbw-candidate.

Two poor openers we have here!

Shan Masood is a sitting duck and has very poor technique. This is a big concern as both him and Hafeez do not strike any fear in the oppositions mind and are there for taking.

You can never expect a batsman to do well at International level, whose FC average is below 35, lol.

Did this guy play for Pakistan A? I mean did he score alot of runs there since he is playing for senior team?

If he hasn't then it's unfair to ask Babar Azam play for A team and then get promoted for senior teams. Rules should be equal and if anything Babar is more ready than Masood.

Babar is not an opener in FC, Fawad Alam had opened in Sri Lanka, he would have been a good option, but we should support Shan now.

Um what? have you started following Pak cricket on this tour only?

He has been woeful since the time I've seen him. And he's been WOEFUL in UAE as well! On the easiest of pitches.

It's not just that, he doesn't have any potential as well, because he don't have the technique.

He'll fail at even club level with such pathetic technique.

So you've missed his debut 50 and excellent pressure hundred against SL.

Yeah and u must have missed all the pathetic inns in between where hes been exposed once bowlers have had a proper look at him.

Among all the openers including Shehzad, Shan has the best technique & temperament. He was part of PAK U16, U19 teams for almost 5 years, long before his uncle became Secretary. I am a Bangladeshi, but know from 2008 that the kid Shan Masood has a very good forward defense, very good measurement of his off stump & he doesn't throw his starts. Shan Masood is classic example of how young players are treated in PAK. Hafeez proved his class time & again against SAF, even ZIM, so Shan debuted against SAF, made a "Opener perfect" 75 on debut. Indeed failed in next 2 of 3 innings (his 21 at DSC was second highest out of 99, & a proper knock), but selectors retained Manzoor for SRL & now Hafeez Shahab is back as all-rounder.

Masood is extremely unlucky in 3 ways -
1. he is close relative of an influential person, which 'll always raise question mark on his inclusion. However, I am surprised to know that in PAK position of Finance Secretary is so powerful that his nephew can get into National side. I mean, there are at least 3 dozens of federal ministers, 273 federal MP, at least half a dozens of 4 star General, Cabinet Secretary, 5 dozens of full secretary, 5 state governors, 5 High Court Chief justice, Director General of Police .....I mean don't these guys have any son, brother, nephew playing cricket? If F. Secretary can make his nephew play Test cricket, in order of hierarchy, these guys are either parallel or higher & I have left out the opposition party, state government, commercial CIPs, PCB office bearers & former cricket greats.

2. He was debuted against SAF & then got dropped - after that PAK is bashing SRL, AUS & Kiwi bowlers in UAE - had there been just a couple of Tests in between, even in WI or NZ, Shan probably would have been required to be called back, without the memo of his uncle. Not many PAK openers are capable of shoulder arming all 6 balls of Steyn.

3. In sub-continent we are very much fond of cult movie culture - the Dilip Kumars, the Amitabhs, the Mithuns - all those deprived, poor, orphan road rockers. Here heroes are born in poverty, learns from survival & fights against nepotism, double standards. If a player comes from rich, influential family, if he has a graduation from a UK University, if he has an influential relative - he simply can't be talented, though his technique, his fitness & performance might defy, but formula doesn't lie.

Good forward defence? Haha. In hindsight this analysis falls into pieces really badly.

Talented he is definitely, only problem is that some of the talent leaked due to this gap between bat and pad.

Forward defence? Blast from the past. MMHS

You are making the same mistake like many here - that's why I said you need to spend few more months in PP. Don't push things too much, that it becomes costly later. I can waste some time & find clips that shows Dravid was castled on his front foot defence & that was not against a squire turner on 5th day wicket.

It's not that there are Boycotts & Gavaskars waiting in PAK's reserves. His game is based on temperament - wait for the 2nd innings - like you, many showed me such clips, then took a break after Sri Lanka Series.

MMHS can be wrong too.

Still, Shehzad is not a solution and is as bad as Shaan.

Tell me, how many openers are there waiting? Ahmed can't be discussed here as he has other issues, which is not for his cricket. Besides, PAK need someone lefti in that line-up.

Azhar gone & 6 months down the line I can make a clip of this dismissal to mock him.

This is what happens when the team is not selected on merit.

Problem is that even if we select the team on merit, there is no opener in Pakistan who is capable of scoring runs consistently in England. Hafeez is the best Test opener in Pakistan at the moment which says a lot.

But yes, Masood is a good, hardworking guy but he is just not talented enough for this level.

Honestly I'd rather have Amin because at least he looks good whilst he is out there

Watching Shan makes me regret not taking cricket more seriously when I was young

It's nothing personal, but he is more out of dept then Imran Farhat. Both though had something in common and we all know what that is

No need for passive aggression. I was just pointing out that how poor a batsman shan is. That innings was out of the blue.

Read somewhere there's a dude Naumuddin something who is a pretty good opener but is 30+ age? Should have selected him this Masood guy looked pretty poor to me first time in seeing him.. Unless he hanged his game dramatically from innings he doesn't look international material especially in English conditions..

Here is a what I see happening. They will give Shan another test. He will fail after which they will drop him. Then desperate to do something they will throw Sami under the bus by playing him in the last two tests under seaming conditions.

This is Pakistan cricket for you.

Oh comeon, one bad performance and the knives are out on him again..

The knives are out already. The poor guy will now suffer the wrath of entire Pakistani fans. At least wait for the second innings guys.

On topic, I saw this guy live and I've said this before that he looked like getting out every ball. I thought grant flower would have worked on him by now. Knowing how hardworking he is I expected him to have improved his game and technique. Looked awful today tbh.

He has basic footwork and head issues which needs to be addressed ASAP. Really disappointed with our management that they haven't this out yet.

A bad innings from him today but I'll reserve my judgement after the first Test since he has got another chance to redeem himself.

It's not about who is better and waiting in line.

He has no ability or potential which you believe he has - your opinion and you're entitled to it.

Almost every other waiting in the ranks is better - Fakhar, Sami, Amin, Naeem you name it. Heck, even Farhat and Yasir Hameed would be better at this stage than this joker.

It's not about picking out a single shot or video - his entire career so far has been like this. His scores actually have been flukes.

he averages less than 35 in domestic FC, what else is anyone expecting?

hafeez averages more than him in FC and thats including the start of his career when he wasnt playing a specialist batter. i dont understand why anyone would imagine that he is anything ore than a nepotistic pick. why would anyone think that he would do significantly better than his FC record in international cricket?

Beccause he speaks good English obviously

That's fine if they give him a decent run. The solution is not to coddle players, but to push for more rational selection policy.

Both hafeez and masood need to go

The masood guy is pure nepotism , 35 average in domestic cricket , guy is worse than farhat and his father in law Ilyas , least farhat was a beast in domestic and had some good shots and at times looked a million dollars

Umar Akal and Shahzad should be in the team for a no marks like hafeez and masood

Azhar Ali has no choice but to start opening for Pakistan , it's a no brainer for me

i believe that is what rahat ali averaged with the ball in LA cricket when he was selected for the ODI team

This was expected though...

He has poor domestic stats and his international stats are poor as well playing in UAE. Not to mention, Anderson made a joke out of him when England toured UAE. He is simply just not good enough.

I would've preferred Ahmed over Masood here, but only so that his fans can stop harping about him, overrating him..
The selectors did Ahmed Shehzad a favor here, it gives him time to build his image up again..
He's being doing that for quite a while.. going to UK high commission, Edhi center, visiting Amjad Sabri's family.. He'll be back pretty soon.. He's learnt his PR stunts from his mentor himself... AKA Shahid Afridi

I watched the highlights couple of hours back just for refresher's sake and felt horrible when they showed Shan's average on the screen.

Let's give him another innings this test.

Aside from his questionable technique, maybe he was nervous as well. Bad combination.

I'd wait before sharpening claws.

Just shows how pathetic our domestic set up is when players like shan masood and khurram manzoor have played for pakistan, neither of them know what end of the cricket bat to hold.

He has played a couple of good innings so far but has missed out in the rest. Needs to score in the second innings otherwise sami aslam must play in the 2nd test.

Actually Umar Amin or Saud Shakeel or Fakhar zaman should be tried as an opener in all formats atleast in ODI and tests, as they badly need a left hand opener to have left-right combo.. Hope inzi think about this...

Fakhar has to prove himself in the A tour first , so far he has failed to impress in the A tour. The one day leg will decide what he is made of.

i don't get the love for Hafeez. He is 37years old. Consistently seeing him avg 30runs, what does that do for future Pakistan team. My personal opinion is fail with youngsters rather then put up with sub-par veterans whose ceiling is 30runs per match.

Fail with youngsters who are willing to learn. Don't need rubbish like Shehzad, Akmal and Maqsood around the team.

This hopeless batsman was interviewed by Nasser Hussain, they just showed it during the innings break.

His dad's was dream to see him play at Lord's. :srini

If he could play as well as he speaks English .....

Please Shan atleast see off the new ball and then you would have done your job.

Clueless as ever

Plz promote Ali to open and bring genuine talented players like Shahzad to open

With babar and Umar akmal coming into the middle order 2 spots available when misbah retires and azhar Ali does what he has to do already open the batting

He doesn't seem to be the kind of player who sees the ball early and adjust his shot which is so necessary when you are playing at this level.

Good start. Let's see if he can kick on

:))) :)))

Are you for real?

I mean, even if he had scored somehow, those runs means nothing - only bad for Pakistan's "future".

He would've gotten another free ride and doomed us on the next tour.

He should be kicked out regardless of how many runs he scores. He's a zero prospect.

What good start? He was just lucky to survive some close shouts etc. Reminds me of Imran Farhat, poor batsman.

Just doesnt look like hes going to ever score anything substantial inns and always looks like he will get out any minute.

Really should be Azhar Ali opening with someone else batting in the middle order. I did look at Masood being a good option for a while after his century in UAE but just has not done anything since.

What kind of attitude is that? If a player scores runs against England in England you don't drop them because you don't like them.

So far he's got two starts and hasn't kicked on. He should be given the next test and if he doesn't score, should be dropped. That would also enable his replacement to be given the tour match we play in between the 2nd and 3rd tests.
