Despite having great fitness he is not a clean fielder.
He has missed two easy run outs of Shehzad & Fakhar today which is a Succide in these weather conditions.
Poor stuff :-/
The BIGGEST mystery.
I wouldn't be shocked even at the selection of Imran Farhat.
But why is this hopeless case of not even club batsman playing Test matches for the prestigious Pakistan cricket team?
What does he have that other much better bats don't?
Two poor openers we have here!
You can never expect a batsman to do well at International level, whose FC average is below 35, lol.
Did this guy play for Pakistan A? I mean did he score alot of runs there since he is playing for senior team?
If he hasn't then it's unfair to ask Babar Azam play for A team and then get promoted for senior teams. Rules should be equal and if anything Babar is more ready than Masood.
Knifes are out after one innings. Give him at least the first 2 tests and then reassess.
So you've missed his debut 50 and excellent pressure hundred against SL.Um what? have you started following Pak cricket on this tour only?
He has been woeful since the time I've seen him. And he's been WOEFUL in UAE as well! On the easiest of pitches.
It's not just that, he doesn't have any potential as well, because he don't have the technique.
He'll fail at even club level with such pathetic technique.
So you've missed his debut 50 and excellent pressure hundred against SL.
Among all the openers including Shehzad, Shan has the best technique & temperament. He was part of PAK U16, U19 teams for almost 5 years, long before his uncle became Secretary. I am a Bangladeshi, but know from 2008 that the kid Shan Masood has a very good forward defense, very good measurement of his off stump & he doesn't throw his starts. Shan Masood is classic example of how young players are treated in PAK. Hafeez proved his class time & again against SAF, even ZIM, so Shan debuted against SAF, made a "Opener perfect" 75 on debut. Indeed failed in next 2 of 3 innings (his 21 at DSC was second highest out of 99, & a proper knock), but selectors retained Manzoor for SRL & now Hafeez Shahab is back as all-rounder.
Masood is extremely unlucky in 3 ways -
1. he is close relative of an influential person, which 'll always raise question mark on his inclusion. However, I am surprised to know that in PAK position of Finance Secretary is so powerful that his nephew can get into National side. I mean, there are at least 3 dozens of federal ministers, 273 federal MP, at least half a dozens of 4 star General, Cabinet Secretary, 5 dozens of full secretary, 5 state governors, 5 High Court Chief justice, Director General of Police .....I mean don't these guys have any son, brother, nephew playing cricket? If F. Secretary can make his nephew play Test cricket, in order of hierarchy, these guys are either parallel or higher & I have left out the opposition party, state government, commercial CIPs, PCB office bearers & former cricket greats.
2. He was debuted against SAF & then got dropped - after that PAK is bashing SRL, AUS & Kiwi bowlers in UAE - had there been just a couple of Tests in between, even in WI or NZ, Shan probably would have been required to be called back, without the memo of his uncle. Not many PAK openers are capable of shoulder arming all 6 balls of Steyn.
3. In sub-continent we are very much fond of cult movie culture - the Dilip Kumars, the Amitabhs, the Mithuns - all those deprived, poor, orphan road rockers. Here heroes are born in poverty, learns from survival & fights against nepotism, double standards. If a player comes from rich, influential family, if he has a graduation from a UK University, if he has an influential relative - he simply can't be talented, though his technique, his fitness & performance might defy, but formula doesn't lie.

Talented he is definitely, only problem is that some of the talent leaked due to this gap between bat and pad.
MMHS can be wrong too.Forward defence? Blast from the past. MMHS

Still, Shehzad is not a solution and is as bad as Shaan.
This is what happens when the team is not selected on merit.

No need for passive aggression. I was just pointing out that how poor a batsman shan is. That innings was out of the blue. You are making the same mistake like many here - that's why I said you need to spend few more months in PP. Don't push things too much, that it becomes costly later. I can waste some time & find clips that shows Dravid was castled on his front foot defence & that was not against a squire turner on 5th day wicket.
It's not that there are Boycotts & Gavaskars waiting in PAK's reserves. His game is based on temperament - wait for the 2nd innings - like you, many showed me such clips, then took a break after Sri Lanka Series.
Problem is that even if we select the team on merit, there is no opener in Pakistan who is capable of scoring runs consistently in England. Hafeez is the best Test opener in Pakistan at the moment which says a lot.
But yes, Masood is a good, hardworking guy but he is just not talented enough for this level.

Oh comeon, one bad performance and the knives are out on him again..
Tell me, how many openers are there waiting? Ahmed can't be discussed here as he has other issues, which is not for his cricket. Besides, PAK need someone lefti in that line-up.
Azhar gone & 6 months down the line I can make a clip of this dismissal to mock him.
he averages less than 35 in domestic FC, what else is anyone expecting?
hafeez averages more than him in FC and thats including the start of his career when he wasnt playing a specialist batter. i dont understand why anyone would imagine that he is anything ore than a nepotistic pick. why would anyone think that he would do significantly better than his FC record in international cricket?
Beccause he speaks good English obviously
Here is a what I see happening. They will give Shan another test. He will fail after which they will drop him. Then desperate to do something they will throw Sami under the bus by playing him in the last two tests under seaming conditions.
This is Pakistan cricket for you.
Both hafeez and masood need to go
The masood guy is pure nepotism , 35 average in domestic cricket , guy is worse than farhat and his father in law Ilyas , least farhat was a beast in domestic and had some good shots and at times looked a million dollars
And people wanted Hafeez to sit out and not him.
Club level player. Umar Amin is better.
You are one of those who supported his selection too
Actually Umar Amin or Saud Shakeel or Fakhar zaman should be tried as an opener in all formats atleast in ODI and tests, as they badly need a left hand opener to have left-right combo.. Hope inzi think about this...
Fail with youngsters who are willing to learn. Don't need rubbish like Shehzad, Akmal and Maqsood around the team.i don't get the love for Hafeez. He is 37years old. Consistently seeing him avg 30runs, what does that do for future Pakistan team. My personal opinion is fail with youngsters rather then put up with sub-par veterans whose ceiling is 30runs per match.
This hopeless batsman was interviewed by Nasser Hussain, they just showed it during the innings break.
His dad's was dream to see him play at Lord's.![]()
Good start. Let's see if he can kick on

Clueless as ever
Plz promote Ali to open and bring genuine talented players like Shahzad to open
With babar and Umar akmal coming into the middle order 2 spots available when misbah retires and azhar Ali does what he has to do already open the batting
What kind of attitude is that? If a player scores runs against England in England you don't drop them because you don't like them.)
)
Are you for real?
I mean, even if he had scored somehow, those runs means nothing - only bad for Pakistan's "future".
He would've gotten another free ride and doomed us on the next tour.
He should be kicked out regardless of how many runs he scores. He's a zero prospect.
