West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the fourth day’s play in the Jamaica Test against Pakistan on Monday.

Gabriel was found to have violated Article 2.2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other Person (including a spectator) in the course of play during an International Match”.

In addition to the fine, three demerit points have been added to Gabriel’s disciplinary records.

The incident happened at the end of the 103rd over of Pakistan’s innings when Gabriel, while collecting his cap from umpire Richard Illingworth, made deliberate physical contact with non-striker Sarfraz Ahmed who was standing in his crease.

Gabriel admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Bruce Oxenford and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite.

NOTES

· Pursuant to Article 7.6 of the Code, if Gabriel reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they will be converted into suspension points and the fast bowler will be banned.

· Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player.

· All level 2 breaches carry an imposition of a fine between 50 per cent and 100 per cent of the applicable match fee and/or up to two suspension points, and three or four demerit points.

Dont agree with the fine. It was nothing serious. Such things happen all the time. Adds flavour to the game especially when things are getting boring :misbah:

video?
50 % seems quite harsh specially in test..
and considering he have to bowl again .
they shouldve fined him after the match maybe?

Sarfraz hit him for a couple boundaries and he got upset and reacted that way later. Good to see Sarfraz kept his cool.
Well deserved fine.

Cricket is called gentleman's game for a reason, deliberate physical contact is not allowed, it is not football or basketball

It was no big deal, I like to see a bit of drama and aggression on the field; not like he punched someone. Am totally against the red and yellow card system which is being proposed.

I didn't see this, but who would want deliberate physical contact with Shannon Gabriel ?! Guy's a tank.

Did Kaptaan in waiting react or take it like a pansy?

He got really worked up and gave Gabriel a few words which were strategically aimed to throw Gabriel off his game and the master plan worked because Gabriel would lose his radar while Misbah scored some crucial runs. I expected Sarfraz to have reacted like that tbh but he remained as cool as cucumber, wasn't good ploy because the batsman would deal with him.

I know but i think it wasnt really anything serious. A 10% fine should have done the job. Its a test match and a 50% fine is quite big.

Pffft Size is irrelevant, Sarfraz is the Mike Tyson of cricket; he'd have dealt with him.
