Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy became the first Pakistani filmmaker to earn an Oscar nomination with her film Saving face, which was nominated in the “Documentary, short film” category as the Oscar nominations were released on Tuesday.

Obaid, who has directed several documentary films, won an Emmy award in 2010 for her documentary Pakistan: Children of the Taliban.

Saving face, which the Karachi-based filmmaker has co-directed with Daniel Junge, depicts the life of a British Pakistani plastic surgeon who donates his time to heal acid victims in Pakistan.

The film is set to be released in March this year, while the Oscars will be held on February 26.

^ Please God No.

Pakistani Cinema getting a boost = Yes :akhtar

A Falsely constructed label; that tries to hilariously attempt to compete with Hollywood and Bollywood and in the process destroy the rich cinematic heritage of Pakistan by consistently neglecting Cinemas and good film making by having rotund ladies dance like they have 5000 volts through their system whilst Shaan is forced to hold his dandaa, wear a fake moustache and yell every dialogue like he was having a hernia/and or giving birth; known as Lollywood.

=

No. :moyo.

Good on her for spending years getting funding and making it; Though however merited her nomination is, I can't help but be cynical as to why the Oscars chose it....

Big slap on the face to religious Mullahs and other bigots

They're probably trying to come up with another conspiracy to say she's maligning Pakistan by going without a male relative to an awards ceremony wearing a sleeveless gown and her face and head uncovered :moyo

Congratulations.

Anyone knows where to watch that documentary?

Dr Mohammad Jawad who returned to Pakistan to help the acid victims .

Well Done Sharmeen and KHAIRMUBARAK PAKISTAN!!!:pakflag2

the other foreign director was also very considerate..giving the limelight to the "Pakistani"

a bit more words from Sharmeen would have been awesome though....but anyhow she spoke very fluently :14:

the Iranians won some too
to me the whole thing seemed too politically motivated

Education, freedom of thought, tolerance, intelligence to accept the opinions of others as being equally valid as your own, are the basic principles of a progressive society. And yet despite failing on all these accounts, Pakistan has been able to achieve this. Great effort!

COngratssssssssssssssssssssss........proud to be a part of such talented nation, PAKISTAN ZINDABAD

Congrats!

Finally a good news at international stage for pakistan. Hopefully others will follow her example and make pakistan proud in future.

a slap in the face of the mullahs who want to lock away women for fear of their own inadequacies and intellectual failings.

Can someone post a link to her speech. I'm sure she used this platform to speak against the drones attacks which have killed over 100 children by the US who have gave her this award.

What does the The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who give out Oscars, have to do with CIA drone attacks in Pakistan?

At the 2010 US Open tennis champs, the Pakistani Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi. Won an award (a runners up medal) and had to give a short speach. Should he have spoken about drones too just because he was on US soil?

Wake up pal. Hollywood is propaganda tool. Do you seriously think any Pakistan woman filmmaker would have won an oscar if she made an equally impressive film about drone attacks?

Any true Pakistani who loves human life and is against death and destruction of their people would have used this opportunity to highlight the issue.

It wouldn't be a first. This is the greatest oscar speech of all time. A great human being unlike this Pakistani mug.

In her speech, Redgrave said, "My dear colleagues, I thank you very much for this tribute to my work. I think that Jane Fonda and I have done the best work of our lives, and I think this is in part due to our director, Fred Zinnemann."

"And I also think it's in part because we believed and we believe in what we were expressing--two out of millions who gave their lives and were prepared to sacrifice everything in the fight against fascist and racist Nazi Germany," Redgrave continued.

She later added, "And I salute you, and I pay tribute to you, and I think you should be very proud that in the last few weeks you've stood firm, and you have refused to be intimidated by the threats of a small bunch of Zionist hoodlums whose behavior is an insult to the stature of Jews all over the world and their great and heroic record of struggle against fascism and oppression."

"And I salute that record and I salute all of you for having stood firm and dealt a final blow against that period when Nixon and McCarthy launched a worldwide witch-hunt against those who tried to express in their lives and their work the truth that they believe in," she said. "I salute you and I thank you and I pledge to you that I will continue to fight against anti-Semitism and fascism."

Vanessa Redgrave has more courage than most Pakistani's filmakers.

Great for her, finally some Pakistanis making headlines for the right reasons.

Acid attacks have to be one of the most cowardly acts, especially against Women. Its good this is being highlighted.

Acid attacks have been highlighted for a very long time, she isn't the first person to do so and won't be the last.

The issue for me is, she is being used. She will get an oscar for highlighting Muslim women being abused by Muslim men, why? It's obvious, the continuation of propaganda against Muslims as being backward and uncivillised.

Does anyone seriously believe she would have even got an invite if a similar quality film was made regarding drone attacks which have murdered children asleep in their beds? Hollywood has a long and strong history of using films and awards to further terrorist imperialism, nothing new here.

Congratulations!!!! I heard she has done many documentaries.,,and the documentary on how taliban hire children was a very brave attempt..would like to see it.

She has done similar documentaries before on jehadi kids trained by taliban. And if showing the true face of these animals who burn woman faces is propaganda against muslims then so be it.

No shhhh sherlock, that's why the Americans gave her the award.

She made films about an enemy which is kicking their backsides left ,right and centre.

What she will do is raise awareness and money for organizations that try to help these unfortunate women throughout South Asia. It may also result in harsher punishment and less acceptance of the men who are responsible. This does not make her a "mug" or somebody who is being used by the West. The fact of the matter is that acid attacks are on the rise. And anything that may help in countering this is a positive.

@KingKhanWC,

When it comes to Pakistan, there are millions of worthy topics to make documentary on - child beggars, illiteracy, corruption, gang activity, narcotics, environmental mismanagement, drone attacks, smuggling from neighboring countries, foreign interference, racism towards Pakistanis, etc. I Hear you.

However, for once understand that Ms. Chinoy's work is done in positive spirit to highlight the plight of women who are subjected to brutality. Majority of us here are lucky to belong to urban areas of Pakistan like Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Quetta, etc. where these acts would be extremely, extremely rare but if you notice, these attacks are frequent in our slums and in country-sides.

Pakistani law enforcement is long overdue and this would serve as a good reminder for Pakistani police to get their act together.

Just Yesterday on Geo News they were reporting that in Karachi a 5 year old girl playing outside her house was kidnapped from a slum, tortured, raped, kept hungry for 6 days, and then killed. Her tiny body was covered by a blanket and on top of a concrete slab in a morgue. Can you imagine the pain her family would have gone through? I am a grown man and almost felt like crying for the little girl - why if I would come across a child playing, I would smile and pray for her!!! How sick these animals how commit such acts against females!

And before somebody uses my post to say that this is why mullahs are jahil, blah blah blah. Politicians in Pakistan have made law and order worse in the country with animal like criminals running wild and free. Might as well bring in Taliban who would put these criminals to sword in open public if the present government can't do anything about them.

Good for her. However I don't understand what's there to be proud of? An ordinary person in Pakistan is not concerned with oscars which are political anyway. As mentioned by many people, will any Pakistani male or female get oscar if a good movie is made on the effects of drone attacks? Yes the problems are there and should be dealt with properly but getting oscar means jack.

Also it's a pitty that oscar award will be applauded by many in Pakistan but the real problem will be ignored as usual. Just goes to show the rediculous behavior of getting all excited about a useless award. I know I should not say this but I doubt Sharmeen really cares about the poor women who suffer in our country. Many filmmakers like her see the easy opportunity to get famous and make a film about a common issue (which is already well known to us) and viola some one from west is quick to hand over the award. The issue is then forgotten as usual.

If someone is sincere then make films of issues on all sides, show the world that you really care and want to highlight any issue no matter it is done in pakistan, by pakistanis or outside pakistan by outsiders.

If she was sincere about all the problems, she wouldn't need oscar to become known to us. I am sure hardly anyone of us even knew her before she got oscar. On the other hand a sincere and balance struggle to make films against any problem in Pakistan would already caught attention of an ordinary person.

Will Pakistan award its most prestigious film award to a documentary about brutalities committed in Bangladesh by the Pakistani mnilitary? No right. So get over it, we don't live in perfect world and if you have some seriously high and santly expectations from USA, then thats your problem.

And so is the issue drone attacks so why bother making a film about it?

Talk about yourself. Thanks to her Oscar nomination and win, the issue of acid attack is getting a serious attention in Pakistani media, the film will play an extremely important role in educating the urban Pakistanis about this issue so they can also play their part in eliminating this evil. Her role as a filmmaker is to bring attention to the casue which she successfully did. Now its the job of the government to take further action.

She didn't ask for an Oscar, she was awarded one!

^Agreed. Now it's up to the citizens(including myself), the politicians and the media to take note of what she is saying and try to seriously tackle this problem. Showing this documentary would be a good start.

No I don't have any expectations from USA and that's not what I emphasized on in my post.

And no Pakistan possibly won't award in a scenario you mentioned. Pakistan is good for awarding cronies in US government just to get more money in return.

And so is the issue drone attacks so why bother making a film about it?

True. Film or no film the issues are well known so the real thing is how the athourities tackle them. Getting oscar and dancing over it mean jack.

However it is hard to see any sincerety in those who are filming one particular issue while ignoring many others. A real sincere person will address all possible issues (known or unknown) repeatedly.

So a oscar was needed to highlight the issue to urban pakistanis? As if they are living in dark and not aware about these issues. Let me tell you this is Pakistan where a common man care little about the problems unless he is involved by chance. If Pakistani nation was so receptive to media highlighting of problems, they would have acted by now since every other day some thing is brought forward to their attention. The government itself has always been a big problem for Pakistanis but our people vote the same criminals again n again.

She didn't ask for an Oscar, she was awarded one!

Yeah i know who awarded her and possibly what motivated them to award but I care less about that it. That's what i mentioned earlier what's there to be proud of? People are reacting as if we have won a world cup.

I wonder why the following documentaries among many other other didn't get any award let
alone oscar.

Final solution

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Solution_(2003_film)

Finding Face

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1478368/

If getting oscar is the way to highlight the problem then all such documentaries should get one.

Anyway time will tell how much effect this oscar has on our law enforcement. I expect all those excited about the award organise a rally for acid attack victims, demanding tougher actions from government.

I guess you don't watch news, because the issues they cover in news shouldn be known to everyone, right? I guess Pakistanis should stop reporting about issues in their news becasue their well known and let just authorities tackle them on their own. Apparently we have frishtey's in governemtn who know about eveyrthing.

Einstein how else the issues become well known? by news reporting which reaches almost every home. Not by documentary shown in hollywood. Beside where did I say documentaries should not be made in general?

Same could be said about those NRP who talk constantly talk about drone attacks and their so called love and sympathy for Pakistanis.
.

The just say it! I don't oppose that.

Yes say that to your friends who think we needed the Oscar platform to highlight the issue of drone attacks.
.

Well I haven't read any such statement from my friends. Besides that's not my point anyway.

The Pakistani media we know today is still a very recent invention, give it a time, I have no doubt in my mind that media will a huge role in the next election.
.

Just for your ino, issues like acid attacks were reported frequently in newspaper long before current visual media, and newspaper were available even in smallest of village while most of TV channels and these documentaries are not avilable there.
